Wegmans Food Market’s Medford store at Mystic Valley Parkway opens on Sunday, Nov. 5

MEDFORD, MA, 2017-Nov-02 — /EPR Retail News/ — Sunday can’t come soon enough for Wegmans’ Medford Store Manager Kevin Russell, the store’s 450 employees, and the eager residents who have called, emailed, and sent in social media comments since plans to bring Wegmans to Medford were announced in 2015.

“Wegmans coming to Medford, Ma?!,” wrote one resident in a tweet. “Don’t toy with my heart. Christmas might have come early this year!”

When the doors open, shoppers at the 120,000 sq. ft. store will be treated to everything they’ve come to love about Wegmans and then some, starting with the expansive produce department – a nod to the family-owned company’s humble beginnings as a produce pushcart in 1916. Customers will have a sense of visiting different shops as they move through the store, as one would in a European open-air market. What may be surprising to some is the consistent, low prices they’ll find and the choice of Family Pack sizes that can save 30% or more.

“Our Medford store also has two newer features that aren’t found in our other New England locations,” said Russell, a 31-year Wegmans employee. “The Burger Bar is a family-friendly in-store restaurant counter, serving burgers and sandwiches, salads, soup, sides, and beer and wine by the glass. The Pizza Shop here offers made-to-order pizzas baked in a custom rotating brick hearth oven, along with Sicilian-style pizza by the slice.”

Wegmans employees – those new to the company and seasoned veterans – have spent the last several months training and preparing for the opening. Why start so early? So they’re well prepared to provide incredible customer service right from the start.

“Customers want to learn where this food came from, how best to prepare it at home, and what else goes well with it,” said Medford Executive Chef Arlo Trainor. “The better we train our people, the better these conversations can be.”

Wegmans Food Market’s Medford store at 3850 Mystic Valley Parkway opens at 7 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 5. Customers who arrive early on opening day, and are near the front of the line, can join employees in the Wegmans cheer at 6:55 a.m. Sound good? Take note: Daylight Saving Time ends on Nov 5.

Wegmans Food Markets’ newest store in Medford donates 17,523 pounds of food to The Greater Boston Food Bank

BOSTON, MA, 2017-Oct-11 — /EPR Retail News/ — Wegmans Food Markets’ newest location in Medford will deliver a tractor-trailer filled with 17,523 pounds of non-perishable food to The Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB) on Thursday, October 12 at 10 a.m. The Greater Boston Food Bank will, in turn, distribute the items to food pantries, including those that serve the Medford area (The Community Cupboard Food Pantry of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Medford, the Saint Raphael Food Pantry, and the Friends of Francis Food Pantry), where Wegmans will open on Sunday, November 5.

A group of Wegmans employees and Medford-area food pantry representatives will be at GBFB when the donation arrives to help unload the truck, which includes nearly nine tons of items such as canned fruits, vegetables, soups, juices, cereals and other products.

“This donation demonstrates our commitment to reducing hunger and giving back to the communities where our customers and employees live and work. It’s our privilege to begin making a difference even before the store opens,” said Kevin Russell, Wegmans Medford store manager.

In 2016, Wegmans donated 14.5 million pounds of food to local food banks, food pantries, and meal programs across all of its market areas. The company also makes it easy for shoppers to support local hunger relief efforts by participating in annual food bank scanning programs at checkout. Since 1993, Wegmans has raised more than $33 million through these programs with 100% of the funds going directly to local agencies.

“Eleven percent of Medford residents struggle with food insecurity, and we thank Wegmans for partnering with The Greater Boston Food Bank to directly help those in need in area,” said Catherine D’Amato, president and CEO of The Greater Boston Food Bank. “Wegmans’ generous donation will provide the equivalent of 14,603 meals and reflects its exemplary commitment to hunger relief.”

The Wegmans Medford leadership team is as follows:

Store Manager Kevin Russell
Kevin Russell began his career as a produce clerk at Wegmans’ Corning, New York, store in 1986. Two years later, he was the store’s produce night manager. As opportunities opened up, he moved from one assignment to the next, mainly in stores in New York’s Southern Tier and Pennsylvania. He rose from night managerial positions to perishable manager, then assistant store manager. Russell became a store manager in 1999, just 13 years after joining Wegmans, and most recently managed the Burlington, Massachusetts location. He will oversee the store’s 450 employees and is currently building the team that will deliver the incredible customer service Wegmans is known for in Medford.

Executive Chef Arlo Trainor
Arlo Trainor got a delicious taste of his future when he took a summer job before college at Carmella’s Italian Kitchen in Brookfield, the town where he grew up. He opened his own restaurant, Arlo’s North End, in 2003 and sold the restaurant in 2010 to find a better work-life balance. Trainor interviewed with Wegmans and was hired in 2011 to work in prepared foods at the Northborough store. He was named sushi team leader in 2012, sous chef in 2013, store chef in 2015, and executive chef in 2016. The Medford store will be the first that Trainor has opened, giving him a key role in the hiring and training of some 120 culinary employees who will report to him.

Perishable Area Manager Ted Kamas
Ted Kamas began working at Wegmans in 1998 as a part-time cashier. He brings prior experience in a variety of positions as a management intern, management trainee, meat and seafood manager, employee representative, service area manager, and merchandising area manager. As perishable area manager in Medford, Kamas will oversee the produce, floral, bakery, seafood, meat, cheese, and deli departments, ensuring Wegmans’ high standards for the freshest ingredients are met and employees are prepared to share cooking techniques and food knowledge with Wegmans customers.

Merchandising Area Manager Alicia Elliott
Alicia Elliott became a Wegmans employee in 1980, working part-time as a cashier. She went on to work in other areas as a night manager, front end manager, photo and video manager, pharmacy manager, produce manager, and service area manager. She has also worked in Wegmans corporate accounting. In her current role as merchandising manager, she’ll supervise the grocery, dairy, frozen foods, health and wellness, bulk, wine, liquor, beer, and home and entertaining departments. Elliott will work collaboratively across the store to ensure that the thousands of products that Wegmans offers are well displayed and well stocked.

Service Area Manager Paula Culhane
Paula Culhane started her Wegmans career in 2006 as a part-time cashier before taking on roles in cheese and seafood, a store operations internship, as seafood department manager, and most recently, as front end manager. At the Medford store, she will lead the front end, service desk, maintenance, Helping Hands, and accounting office as the store’s service area manager. Culhane’s priority is to ensure that incredible customer service is delivered every day. She will also oversee local community giving, carrying out Wegmans’ commitment to make a difference in every community it serves.

Wegmans Food Markets opens third Massachusetts store located in Burlington on October 26

BURLINGTON, MA, 2014-10-22— /EPR Retail News/ — Wegmans Food Markets, known for its incredible customer service and restaurant-quality prepared foods, is on a mission to change food shopping in Burlington. And, at 135,000 square feet, they have the space to do just that. Store Manager Kevin Russell and his team of 600 employees have been working for months to get the store ready for customers when the third Massachusetts Wegmans opens in Burlington on Sunday, October 26 at 7 a.m.

“We can’t wait to meet our new customers,” says Store Manager Kevin Russell. “We’ve been training and preparing for months all with one goal in mind: to make each customer’s shopping experience easy and fun.”

There are dozens of reasons Wegmans new Burlington store – which includes a full Wine, Liquor and Beer Shop and Market Café – is different than any place you’ve ever shopped before.

Wegmans offers an unmatched produce selection, with hundreds of different conventional and organic fruits and vegetables on any given day. Be on the lookout for the Fresh Cut Fruit and Veggie station, where produce is cleaned, cut, and ready to take home. Another must-see is the Market Café with restaurant-quality prepared foods for takeout or dine-in. So, whether you’re craving an old-fashioned sub, Asian cuisine, fresh sushi or anything in-between, Wegmans has a variety of choices to please even the pickiest eater in the family. Indoor seating in the Market Café is on the mezzanine level, giving customers a chance to watch all the action below, plus there’s an outdoor patio with a fireplace for dining alfresco. In total, the store seats more than 300.

As shoppers enter and move through the store, they’ll have a sense of visiting different shops, as one would in a European open air market. Other departments include seafood, meat, deli, bakery, Nature’s Marketplace (with natural and organic foods), a Kosher section, cheese shop, Mediterranean bar and more. In addition to groceries, the store has a full pharmacy, floral shop, health and beauty section, and gifts/housewares.

Among the 60,000 plus products offered at the Burlington store, more than 3,000 are organic.

“Even if a customer has never before shopped at Wegmans, they seem to know our reputation for great selection, the best quality, and incredible customer service,” said Russell. “But, they are often pleasantly surprised by our consistent low prices. We also have Family Pack sizes throughout the store, which can mean a savings of 30% or more.”

In advance of the opening, customers are encouraged to sign up for a Wegmans Shoppers Club Card, which is free and offers extra savings and other benefits. Another great tool is the free Wegmans App, which allows shoppers to create and save a shopping list using the Wegmans product catalog, and then organizes the list by aisle. For more information on either, visit www.wegmans.com/burlington.

Marybeth Stewart, Wegmans Human Resources Manager for New England adds, “One of the advantages to the Massachusetts expansion is growth opportunities for our employees. A number of employees at the Burlington store started at our other locations and have now been promoted. Wegmans will expand to Westwood in 2015 as well as additional area locations. We encourage anyone interested in a position to visit www.wegmans.com/careers.”
