King Kullen’s selection of healthy options to stay active and stick to a diet plan

Stay on top of healthy diet and exercise routines with King Kullen’s help.

Bethpage, NY, 2016-01-13 — /EPR Retail News/ — Follow through with the healthy New Year’s resolutions set in place, thanks to King Kullen’s selection of healthy options for all kinds of recipes and tips on how to stay active and stick to a diet plan.

Just because it’s called a diet, doesn’t mean the result will be hunger. For filling and tasty options that are also healthy, turn to seafood. Options such as albacore tuna, Alaskan salmon, Coho salmon and rainbow trout are just a few of the lean fish to choose from when picking a main course for a meal.

Skinless poultry and lean meats are also a good way to go. Rather than frying meat, bake or grill it and remove any skin, which is just fatty. Round or loin beef cuts tend to be leanest, as well as lamb or pork loin cuts. Pair one of these poultry or lean meats, or a seafood cut, with produce — dark, leafy greens have some of the highest nutritional value — and a perfect meal is ready! Tasty and healthy!

Sometimes though, the cravings are just too strong. So when it comes to these tough times, there are great substitutes for those easy-to-love comfort foods. Next time mashed potatoes are a great pairing for a meal, substitute it out for mashed cauliflower. For wraps, sandwiches and even burgers, greens like romaine lettuce or kale can be a carb replacement. Even veggies are a great substitute for pasta, like spaghetti squash, zucchini noodles and other spiral-cut veggies. Bake up some kale, sweet potato sticks or zucchini slices to replace fries or potato chips, and as a topper, switch out sour cream for Greek yogurt, which can also work great in dips! Another great topper replacement is switching out butter with avocado. This goes great on toast, bagels and more! Replace a glass of soda with seltzer and fresh fruit for flavor and as always, honey or Stevia are the perfect substitutes for sugar. Oftentimes, no one even notices the difference!

To keep meal prep simple, make a list of everything needed for recipes and prep, limiting it to just one trip to the grocery store. Pre-chop all veggies or fruits to save time and make them more snack-friendly. Stock up on plastic containers that are convenient for prepping one meal in and have at least one for each day of the week. Cooking everything at once and divvying up the portions saves time and work throughout the course of the week when it comes to preparing lunches and dinners. Other easy meal ideas come from the freezer. Make meals ahead of time in greater portions and save the leftovers for future meal prep:https://www.pinterest.com/pin/199917670936558372/. Try Buffalo chicken and broccoli with quinoa (https://www.pinterest.com/pin/199917670936558306/), spaghetti squash and turkey cheese bake (https://www.pinterest.com/pin/199917670936558341/) or choose form a plethora of slow cooker meals that will provide plenty of leftovers to freeze up for later.

If starting up a new exercise plan, make sure the perfect diet is paired up with it. Pack each day with fat-burning foods that can aid the weight-loss journey. The following foods are known to help burn fat and speed up metabolism:

  •     Almonds and other nuts
  •     Eggs
  •     Turkey and other lean meats
  •     Grapefruit
  •     Green tea
  •     Chili peppers
  •     Spinach and greens
  •     Whole grains (quinoa, brown rice, whole grain cereal)
  •     Beans
  •     Legumes
  •     Peanut butter
  •     Berries
  •     Low-fat/fat-free dairy products, yogurt and cheese

For a power punch of nutrients, try these superfoods, which contain high levels of essential nutrients and minerals while also having antioxidants that help shield bodies from cell damage and help to prevent disease.

  •     Dark, leafy greens
  •     Blueberries
  •     Beets
  •     Salmon
  •     Lentils
  •     Beans
  •     Acai
  •     Goji berries
  •     Cacao/cocoa powder
  •     Chia seeds
  •     Kefir
  •     Hemp seeds

To stay on top of that new or habitual fitness routine, use a stability ball in the comfort of home (https://www.pinterest.com/pin/199917670936557335/), try winter activities for constant fun and physical activity, such as ice skating, sledding, skiing or snowboarding, or pop a workout DVD into the TV at home. A great way to get motivated and stay motivated is by playing upbeat music as a pre-workout routine or provide personal incentives and rewards. Setting goals and having a workout buddy are the ultimate motivators!

King Kullen opened new supermarket in North Patchogue

  • King Kullen Opens North Patchogue Store
  • Former Waldbaum’s supermarket offers customers greater selection and expanded technology to enhance the shopping experience.

BETHPAGE, NY, 2015-12-9 — /EPR Retail News/ — King Kullen Grocery. Co., Inc. opened a new supermarket in North Patchogue on Friday, December 4, at the site of the former Waldbaum’s at 440 West Sunrise Highway, South Service Road.  Acquired by King Kullen this autumn after Waldbaum’s parent company, A&P, declared bankruptcy, the new King Kullen provides customers with greater selection throughout, including store-made prepared meals, an expanded fresh produce section, and a bakery whose original offerings include store-baked artisanal banquettes…available in traditional and multigrain varieties.

“From the moment we acquired the store we’ve been focused on how to make it better and give customers everything they want in a modern supermarket,” explains King Kullen Senior Vice President Joseph Brown.  “I’m happy to say that while shoppers will find many changes and improvements, they will still recognize most of the same employees they knew from Waldbaum’s.  A proud union company, King Kullen offered employment to these men and women and also hired additional workers from nearby stores that had closed due to A&P’s bankruptcy.  We’re committed to North Patchogue and the surrounding communities and are very excited to be here.”

North Patchogue Store Manager Joseph Notaro says one way the new King Kullen is addressing the needs of the surrounding community is by offering time-strapped shoppers a number of options, including specialty prepared meals that are ready to bring home and serve.

“We’re on the westbound South Service Road of Sunrise Highway,” he explains.  “Many people pass the store on the way back from work or before turning down Waverly Avenue towards Patchogue Village.  Now they can stop in and pick up great, healthy meal options prepared by our culinary team, with the selections changing daily.”

According to Notaro, the prepared items — which are available at the service counter or pre-packed and ready to bring home — include complete meals, such as London broil or roasted vegetable lasagna; nutritious salad options, ranging from grain-based harvest wheatberry to Thai coconut quinoa; and traditional hot and cold soups as well as more diverse choices, including shrimp and corn chowder or black bean with shredded pork.

Visitors to the new King Kullen will also discover a host of technological advances designed to facilitate ordering and enhance the shopping experience.  For example, the deli department boasts two digital screens and four kiosks where customers can place orders and continue shopping.  When the order is ready, they either receive a text message or are paged — whichever they prefer.  During peak times a deli employee will come out from behind the counter and take orders via a tablet.  Even the store’s full-service pharmacy department offers online prescription refills to save people time.

“The new store makes shopping easier and more enjoyable,” observes Brown.  “It’s what King Kullen is all about.  Since our founding 85 years ago, we’ve been locally owned and operated.  We’re still going strong because we listen to customers to determine how we can serve them better.  We know what they want in a supermarket and you see that reflected in the new store.”

The North Patchogue King Kullen is open 7:00 am to 11:00 pm Monday to Saturday; 7:00 am to 9 pm on Sundays.  More information is available by visiting www.kingkullen.com.

Headquartered in Bethpage, New York, King Kullen Grocery Company, Inc. is recognized by the Smithsonian Institution as America’s first supermarket.  Founded in 1930 by Michael J. Cullen, King Kullen operates 36 stores and five Wild by Nature markets across Long Island.

“To pay tribute to our father, James A. Cullen, and to support Little Flower’s foster care and adoption services, my brothers and I started the golf outing over three decades ago,” explained King Kullen Co-President Brian C. Cullen.  “Since then, King Kullen has raised well over $3 million for Little Flower.  We are extremely proud of this accomplishment that benefits so many children and families.  It is an honor to support Little Flower Children and Family Services in their important mission.”

Little Flower Executive Director Corinne Hammons observed, “Because of the leadership support of King Kullen and its close circle of family and friends, we have been able to care for children of all ages at our residences and place children in homes with caring parents.  The golf outing remains a great success that directly benefits the children of Little Flower.”

Members of the Cullen family are personally involved in Little Flower and have actively supported many programs, including the construction of eight cottages that provide a residential setting for more than 100 children and teenagers at Little Flower’s Wading River, New York, location.
