Starbucks announces the arrival of Blonde Espresso in the United States

Starbucks announces the arrival of Blonde Espresso in the United States
  • Starbucks Blonde Espresso – a light roast that’s smooth and subtly sweet– is a permanent menu item complementing the boldness of Starbucks Signature Espresso Roast originally introduced more than 40 years ago
  • For the first time ever, Starbucks customers in the U.S. will be able to customize their espresso with every order in more than 8,000 locations

SEATTLE, 2018-Jan-10 — /EPR Retail News/ — Today (Jan. 9,2018 ), Starbucks Coffee Company (NASDAQ: SBUX) announced the arrival of Starbucks® Blonde Espresso, marking the first time the company has introduced a new core espresso option in the United States in more than 40 years. Customers across the U.S. will now be able to order any handcrafted espresso beverage with their choice of “Starbucks® Signature” or “Starbucks® Blonde” espresso, including Starbucks Caffe Latte, Cappuccino, Flat White, Macchiato and Americano beverages.

“Our partners are so passionate about their craft and now they get to help our customers discover and personalize the foundation of the beverage – an espresso that is either bold and rich or smooth and bright. We want every experience our customers have with us to be perfect for them” said Kris Engskov, president U.S. Retail for Starbucks.

Demand for espresso beverages is on the rise with the National Coffee Association reporting in 2017 that nearly 25 percent of past-day daily coffee drinkers choose espresso*. Starbucks has offered a second espresso option in select international markets since 2013, including the debut of Starbucks® Blonde Espresso in Canada last year to an overwhelmingly positive response from partners (employees) and customers. Building on that success, this is the first new addition to the company’s U.S. core espresso menu and, as a permanent addition will be available year-round. Starbucks® Blonde Espresso is also available in pods for the Verismo® System by Starbucks and, joins Starbucks portfolio of lighter roast offerings including Starbucks® Blonde Roast coffees, which were introduced as whole bean packaged coffee and brewed options in 2012.

Created by a team of master blenders and roasters, Starbucks® Blonde Espresso brings together beans from Latin America and East Africa, roasted to the peak of their flavor to showcase the coffee’s balanced, subtle sweetness.

“We set the standard for a dark, boldly roasted coffee and in this case, we broke a few of our own rules by taking a lighter approach to espresso which created a bright taste with sweet citrus notes and a smooth body,” said Andrew Linnemann, vice president of Global Coffee for Starbucks. “We are really proud of the roast and think customers are going to love experimenting with it”

All of Starbucks coffee, including Starbucks® Blonde Espresso, is sourced through its Coffee and Farmer Equity (C.A.F.E) Practices, the company’s comprehensive approach to sourcing that meets its social, economic, environmental and quality standards. Starbucks is also a founding member of the Sustainable Coffee Challenge, a growing coalition of more than 80 industry and conservation leaders led by Conservation International. The challenge is convening the sector to sustain the future supply of coffee while helping to ensure the prosperity and wellbeing of farmers and workers.

  • Martin Brok to become senior vice president and president Starbucks EMEA
  • Incumbent Kris Engskov promoted to global leadership role in Seattle as executive vice president; transition to occur summer 2016

LONDON, 2016-May-03 — /EPR Retail News/ — Starbucks Coffee Company (NASDAQ: SBUX) today announced the promotion of Kris Engskov to a global executive vice president role and the arrival of Martin Brok as new senior vice president and president in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA).

Engskov will be promoted to executive vice president, joining the Starbucks senior leadership team in Seattle and transitioning into a new role leading a key part of Starbucks global enterprise. More information will be available on this appointment later in the summer as the transition takes effect.

Having started with Starbucks in 2002, Engskov has worked in the region since 2011, first as managing director of Starbucks UK and Ireland and from 2013 as president of Starbucks EMEA. During his tenure, Engskov led a major restructuring of the EMEA business, including the development of a new licensed business model and the launch of the company’s first-ever franchising program. Over the past few years, the region has dramatically increased unit growth and profitability, driven by the signing of a number of new development agreements, including with Shell, REWE, and Casino, and through new licensing agreements to open several new geographies including Italy and South Africa.

Martin Brok, incoming senior vice president and president, Starbucks EMEA, joined the company in February 2016 as senior vice president, strategic partnerships. He previously served as vice president of Global Product and Merchandising Operations at Nike, where he was responsible for transforming the Global Product and Merchandising Operations and Analytics organization.

He also served as chief operating officer for Nike’s direct-to-consumer business and as general manager of Western Europe and Asia Pacific operations for the company. Before Nike, Brok was senior vice president Franchise Operations & Marketing for EMEA at Burger King and also served in several strategic operations leadership roles. Brok, who is Dutch, has significant experience in the EMEA region and in global roles, leading key organizations within some of the world’s best-known brands.

“I could not be more proud of the progress we have made in Europe, Middle East and Africa, in some of the most competitive coffee markets in the world,” said Kris Engskov, outgoing president, Starbucks EMEA. “With an entirely new business model now driving sustainable profitability, a healthy portfolio of stores, and new partnership agreements driving growth across 39 countries, our EMEA region is stronger than at any time in its history.  It has been a privilege to lead some of the best teams and the brightest people I have ever worked with. As I return to Seattle for a new professional challenge, I leave Starbucks EMEA in great hands with Martin, who will bring new energy, drive and leadership experience to the region.”

“It’s a huge honor to be given the opportunity to lead our EMEA business. I’ve been privileged to work for some of the best brands in the world throughout my career and I’m delighted to bring my experience to Starbucks in this region,” said Brok. “We’ll focus on further elevating the brand across retail, channel development and digital through innovation, creating new occasions and deepening our connection with existing customers and engaging new ones. Kris’s hard work over the last five years means we are a strong part of the global team and well prepared for our next wave of growth. I look forward to building on this work and to working side by side with some of the finest partners in the company.”

“I want to congratulate Kris on his promotion and to wish Martin every possible success in his new role. Kris has led the Europe, Middle East and Africa businesses into profitability over the last five years,” said Kevin Johnson, Starbucks chief operating officer. “He has always had a strong and ambitious vision for what needed to be achieved and has gone after delivering that vision every day, leading his team with determination, purpose and passion. Like Kris, Martin will be a great fit for the EMEA market as it develops and grows. He brings extensive experience of licensing and franchising and has a proven track record, having worked with some of the world’s biggest brands in senior positions. I look forward to watching the impact I know he will make on Starbucks in the region.”

Starbucks UK: Home Sweet Loan programme to help pay rental deposits for Starbucks partners (employees)

  • Home Sweet Loan programme, with support from Generation Rent and Shelter, will help pay rental deposits for Starbucks partners (employees)
  • Extends National Living Wage to all partners regardless of age

SEATTLE, 2015-9-25 — /EPR Retail News/ — Starbucks UK is announcing two new initiatives as part of its on-going commitment to help partners, particularly those aged under-25, tackle the cost of living.

The Home Sweet Loan programme, developed by Shelter as the Tenancy Deposit Loan Scheme, means that Starbucks will provide an interest-free loan to help partners pay rental deposits when they’re moving into a new home. The first-of-its-kind programme is being launched by a private company in the UK, following the example of government departments and the Co-operative.

Starbucks has also announced plans to extend the National Living Wage to all partners, including those aged under the age of 25. This commitment to the National Living Wage recommendations will increase its basic pay to £7.20 per hour in April 2016 for all employees, including apprentices and more than 4,500 members of staff who are under 25. Going beyond the Government’s recommendations, Starbucks will also pay a London Premium for partners working in the capital.

“We are really proud to be the first private company to implement Shelter’s innovative Tenancy Deposit Loan Scheme,” said Kris Engskov, president of Starbucks EMEA. “We know the cost of living is a key concern for many, with the average rental deposit in England now is £1,226.*  And with over half of our partners being under 25 years old, that rent affordability especially is an issue that affects them.  These initiatives are two of the ways we are able to support the great people that work with us.”

“There are now 11 million private renters in England, and as housing costs keep rising, more and more people are struggling to scrape together the deposit needed to rent a home,” said Campbell Robb, Shelter chief executive. “After successfully launching the programme with our own staff in 2013, it’s great to see that Starbucks is following suit and helping their staff to move into a home without worrying about how they’ll cover the cost. This will no doubt encourage other UK employers to follow their example and give renters the helping hand they need.”

“We applaud Starbucks for taking leadership on helping their employees raise a tenancy deposit and encourage other businesses to do the same,” said Betsy Dillner, director of Generation Rent. “It is increasingly difficult for workers in retail and other industries to access housing when rents are so high. But we can’t rely on the goodwill of employers alone; we hope to see much more action from the government to increase the supply of low-cost homes.”

The initiatives were announced in an update to Starbucks Partners which included the extension of theStarbucks Apprenticeship Programme as well as the retention of the Bean Stock employee share ownership programme.

* My Deposits (Q4, 2014) Tenants enjoy quarterly deposit drop

About Starbucks Home Sweet Loan Rental Deposit
The programme is available to Starbucks partners working in company-owned stores who have been with the business for over a year and would like to apply for a loan to help pay their rental deposit when moving into a home. Starbucks will loan a maximum amount of one month’s wages, paid within four weeks of application, to be repaid over twelve months.

About the National Living Wage
Starbucks is committed to supporting the National Living Wage recommendations by increasing the basic salary to £7.20 per hour. Barista pay will move to £7.20 per hour from April and supervisor pay will move to £8.72 per hour (The current base pay for a  Barista is £6.77 and Supervisor is £8.20). The average hourly rate will be £7.98 per hour. Starbucks will pay a premium to those partners working in London, where costs of living are much higher than in other parts of the country. With over 50% of Starbucks staff under the age of 25, the company is ensuring the increase in salary applies to all employees and will not use lower rates for younger partners or apprentices. Over 4,500 partners in company-owned stores will be impacted by the change. Starbucks is supportive of the government’s longer term ambition of getting £9 per hour.

We look forward to using our partnership to leverage Taste’s strong track record of creating jobs and developing great people,” said Engskov. “Starbucks sources a considerable amount of its global, high‐quality coffee from farms in sub‐Saharan Africa, in partnership with our network of farmer support and agronomy centers in Ethiopia, Rwanda and Tanzania.
