MinuteClinic announces no cost “Know Your Numbers” heart health screenings this February

Four days of screenings offered at no cost to support women’s heart health and the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women® movement

Woonsocket, RI, 2018-Feb-07 — /EPR Retail News/ — MinuteClinic, the retail medical clinic of CVS Health (NYSE:CVS), is offering no cost “Know Your Numbers” heart health screenings at its more than 1,100 locations nationwide every Wednesday in February.

Customers can visit MinuteClinic, a convenient and affordable community resource for health and wellness, on February 7, 14, 21, and 28 and receive a heart health preventive screening at no cost to them. During the screenings, patients will learn the five key personal health numbers that can help them determine their risk for heart disease – total cholesterol, HDL (good) cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar and body mass index.

According to a recent national poll, commissioned by CVS Health, women in the U.S. are increasingly aware of the dangers of heart disease and recognize it as the #1 killer of women, however few acknowledge their personal risk factors that contribute to heart disease.

“The more a woman knows about cardiovascular disease, the more likely she is to be able to beat it. In fact, we know that 80 percent of cardiac and stroke events are preventable through education and action. That’s why MinuteClinic is pleased to be able to offer these heart health screenings,” said Angela Patterson, DNP, FNP-BC, NEA-BC, and Chief Nurse Practitioner Officer at MinuteClinic. “During the screenings, patients will receive important information about their health and will be counseled on ways to reduce their risk for heart disease and stroke. Awareness is key when it comes to maintaining good heart health.”

The no cost heart health screenings are in recognition of CVS Health’s support of the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women® movement, a national campaign to raise awareness of heart disease and stroke in women and to empower women to take control of their health.

As part of its support for Go Red For Women, CVS Health has pledged to raise a minimum of $10 million through 2019 to support life-saving cardiovascular research and education. Bayer® Aspirin is the proud sponsor of the heart health screenings at MinuteClinic.

“These screenings are especially important this year following the recent launch of new blood pressure guidelines from the American Heart Association to improve blood pressure control and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease,” added Patterson. “Many patients who may not have needed intervention before may now be instructed to adopt lifestyle changes or even prescribed medication.”

MinuteClinic locations offer comprehensive health screenings year-round at times and locations that work for patients. Clinics are open seven days a week, including evenings, with no appointment needed. Patients can view wait times at all MinuteClinic locations and hold a place in line by visiting www.minuteclinic.com or through the CVS Pharmacy app. For a list of MinuteClinic locations, visit http://www.cvs.com/minuteclinic/clinic-locator. MinuteClinic adds new travel-related services and immunizations

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2016-Jul-09 — /EPR Retail News/ — To help patients prepare for a safe and healthy travel season this summer and beyond, MinuteClinic, the walk-in medical clinics inside select CVS Pharmacy and Target stores nationwide, has added several new travel-related services and immunizations.

“Whether attending the upcoming 2016 Summer Games in Brazil, performing humanitarian service in a developing country, preparing for a semester abroad, or simply enjoying a tropical beach vacation, international travelers should consider the health risks of the destination they are visiting and the preventive measures available to avoid harmful illness and disease,” said Angela Patterson, DNP, FNP-BC, NEA-BC,MinuteClinic’s Chief Nurse Practitioner. “Our new suite of travel-related health services assists families and individual travelers as they make plans for overseas trips.”

Patients can now see a MinuteClinic nurse practitioner or physician assistant for a pre-travel risk assessment in advance of their trip and receive an individualized plan for prevention and treatment specific to the country they are visiting. Educational information is provided on health risks, disease outbreaks, recommended vaccines and preventive measures, including the latest updates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In addition, MinuteClinic nurse practitioners can provide guidance on prescribed travel-specific medications, over-the-counter medications, first aid supplies, food and water guidance and even mosquito bite prevention, if applicable.

Patients can also choose to visit MinuteClinic for individual travel vaccinations and prescriptions for preventive medications. MinuteClinic’s robust suite of travel health related services include:

  • Typhoid Vaccination: About 22 million cases of typhoid worldwide are reported annually according to the CDC. Vaccinations, both oral and injected, now offered at MinuteClinic, reduce the risk of disease by 50 to 80 percent. Typhoid can cause lasting fevers, weakness, stomach pains, headaches and other symptoms and can lead to internal bleeding and death in rare instances. The vaccine is available to patients older than 24 months in most states.
  • Malaria Prevention: Medications to prevent malaria infection, a potentially fatal disease transmitted by mosquito bites, are now available at MinuteClinic. Practitioners will prescribe the most effective medication based on an assessment of the overseas destination, season of travel, duration and the patient’s access to medical care. Malaria occurs in many popular regions including Mexico and Central America, the Caribbean, Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe and the South Pacific.
  • Hepatitis A Vaccination: Travelers can reduce their risk of contracting hepatitis A, a liver disease spread by contaminated food and water, through a series of two vaccinations issued six months apart at all MinuteClinic locations. According to the CDC, Hepatitis A is among the most common vaccine-preventable infections acquired during travel. In the United States the most frequently identified risk factor for hepatitis A is international travel.
  • Motion Sickness Prevention: Nurse practitioners can provide customized treatment plans for patients, ages six and up, reporting a prior history of motion sickness. Treatment options include over-the-counter medication recommendations and prescriptions when appropriate. Motion sickness is most common among children, women and seniors.
  • Travelers’ Diarrhea Prevention and Treatment: MinuteClinic practitioners can provide medical advice on over-the-counter options to pack in the event of illness and can also provide treatment upon a patient’s return.

MinuteClinic is open seven days a week and with no appointment necessary. A new digital tool accessible via www.minuteclinic.com allows patients to view wait times at all MinuteClinic locations and hold a place in line from the convenience of their smartphone, computer or tablet.

Many travel-related services at MinuteClinic, including pre-travel risk assessments and typhoid vaccinations, cannot be billed to insurance. Other services such as hepatitis A vaccinations and travelers’ diarrhea treatment, may be covered based on the individual patient’s insurance plan.

MinuteClinic introduced new digital tool for patients to view wait times and hold a place in line

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2016-May-31 — /EPR Retail News/ — MinuteClinic, the retail medical clinic of CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) which operates more than 1,100 retail medical clinics in CVS Pharmacy and Target stores across the United States, has introduced a new digital tool that allows patients to view wait times at most locations and hold a place in line from the convenience of their smartphone, computer or tablet.

The new system is currently available to patients visiting MinuteClinic locations inside CVS Pharmacy stores and Longs Drugs in Hawaii. It will be expanded to Target-based clinics later this year. The service debuts at the same time as MinuteClinic expands its suite of health care services and surpasses 30 million patient visits.

“Since introducing the first store-based, walk-in clinics in 2000, MinuteClinic has consistently developed new ways to evolve its model to make health care services more convenient for today’s consumer,” said Andrew Sussman, M.D., President of CVS MinuteClinic and Executive Vice President and Associate Chief Medical Officer of CVS Health. “We know patients are demanding added convenience as they interact with the health care system. The option to hold a place in line gives patients more choices and flexibility and will allow for prompt care when arriving at our clinics. We think of it as the ‘cure for the common wait’.”

To use MinuteClinic’s new digital tool, patients start by viewing current wait times online at the clinic they’d like to visit. They then enter the reason for their visit and provide an email address or phone number in MinuteClinic’s secure system to receive a confirmation code and reminder messages via email or text. Patients are given an estimated time to arrive at the clinic. Once at the selected clinic, they sign in at the kiosk and enter their unique confirmation code. They are then ready to be seen as soon as the practitioner is available based on the order in which the confirmation was received.

While bringing more convenient care options to its growing patient base, MinuteClinic has also added a variety of new medical services that include treatment of sprains and strains, gout, joint pain, indigestion and heartburn, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

In addition, MinuteClinic is expanding women’s health and counseling services to include contraceptive care. Available to patients over 18 years of age (19 in some states), MinuteClinic practitioners can see women interested in starting birth control or changing their present method of contraception to develop a customized plan.

Increasing patient demand is the impetus for adding these new services, according to Sussman.

“We’ve worked closely with our collaborating physicians, health system affiliates, and our practitioner team to develop a consistent and thoughtful approach to expand and introduce new services that are within the scope of practice of our nurse practitioners and physician assistants,” said Sussman. “We employ evidence-based guidelines in our treatment plans. Having seen more than 30 million visits in 16 years, we hope to continue to bring innovations and convenience to the way health care is delivered today.”

Nurse practitioners and physician assistants at MinuteClinic specialize in family health care and can diagnose, treat and write prescriptions for common family illnesses such as strep throat; ear, eye, sinus, bladder and bronchial infections; nausea, vomiting and diarrhea; indigestion. Acne, rashes and skin conditions; sprains and strains; and minor wounds and abrasions are also treated. Common vaccinations are available at most locations, such as influenza, tetanus, pneumonia and Hepatitis A & B.

Prevention and wellness services include screening and monitoring for diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, tuberculosis (TB) testing, contraceptive care, motion sickness prevention and smoking cessation.

At the conclusion of each visit, patients receive educational material, a prescription (when clinically appropriate) and a visit summary. A copy of the diagnostic record can be sent electronically, or by fax or mail, to a primary care provider with patient permission.

MinuteClinic announces new initiative to expand access to health care services for Veterans in Northern California

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2016-May-25 — /EPR Retail News/ — MinuteClinic, the walk-in medical clinic of CVS Health (NYSE: CVS), announced today a new initiative with the Department of Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System to expand access to high quality and convenient health care services for Veterans in Northern California. Through this initiative, more than 60,000 Veterans who are enrolled in the VA Palo Alto HCS can now be referred to MinuteClinic for acute health services.

“We are pleased to announce this new initiative with the VA Palo Alto Health Care System,” said Andrew Sussman, M.D., Executive Vice President and Associate Chief Medical Officer, CVS Health and President, MinuteClinic. “Through this arrangement, MinuteClinic and the VA Palo Alto will join forces to provide Veterans in Northern California with additional options for high quality clinical services. We’re committed to providing top-notch care to the area’s Veterans and this relationship will allow us to do so in locations and at times that are convenient for the VA’s patients.”

VA Palo Alto HCS consists of three inpatient facilities located at Palo Alto, Menlo Park, and Livermore, plus seven outpatient clinics in San Jose, Fremont, Capitola,Monterey, Stockton, Modesto, and Sonora. Veterans who call the VA Palo Alto’sNurse Helpline (1-800-445-0057) can be referred to one of 14 area MinuteClinic locations for treatment of common illnesses. As an added convenience, Veterans who are written a prescription at a MinuteClinic visit will be able to fill it at CVS Pharmacy.

“This program reaffirms our commitment to access through innovation and flexible health care delivery,” said Dr. Stephen Ezeji-Okoye, Deputy Chief of Staff, VA Palo Alto Health Care System. “The diverse geography of our Veteran population requires us to think about access as providing the right care at the right place at the right time – as defined by the Veteran. We are particularly excited about working with MinuteClinic because they share our commitment to high quality care and our belief in meeting Veterans needs as efficiently and effectively as possible.”

MinuteClinic and the VA Palo Alto will utilize an interconnected electronic medical record (EMR) system, which will advance clinical care for the Veterans treated through the arrangement. After patient consent, participating MinuteClinic locations will electronically send patient visit summaries to the patient’s primary care physician at the VA. If more comprehensive care is needed, Veterans will be directed to follow up with their VA primary care provider for additional services as appropriate.

“By allowing our electronic health records to communicate and share important clinical information, we’ll have a more comprehensive view of the Veterans we collectively serve, which will enable important health care decision making and ensure continuity of care,” Sussman added.

Nurse practitioners at MinuteClinic specialize in family health care and can diagnose, treat and write prescriptions, as appropriate, for common family illnesses such as strep throat; ear, eye, sinus, bladder and bronchial infections; nausea, vomiting and diarrhea; and heartburn and indigestion. Minor wounds, abrasions, skin conditions, sprains and strains are treated, and common vaccinations such as influenza, tetanus, pneumonia and Hepatitis A and B are available at most locations.

Prevention and wellness services include screening and monitoring for diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, tuberculosis (TB) testing, contraceptive care, motion sickness prevention and smoking cessation. MinuteClinic is open seven days a week and no appointment is necessary.

MinuteClinic opens its first retail clinics in Maine inside CVS/pharmacy stores in Portland and South Portland

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2015-11-6 — /EPR Retail News/ — MinuteClinic, the largest and fastest growing provider of retail-based medical clinics in the United States, has opened its first retail clinics in Maine inside CVS/pharmacy stores in Portland and South Portland. State Senator Anne Haskell will join in a ribbon cutting today at the Portland clinic.

MinuteClinic now has more than 1,000 clinics in 33 states and the District of Columbia inside select CVS/pharmacy stores.  There are nearly 100 clinics in five New England states:  Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island.

Clinics are open seven days a week, including weekday evening hours. No appointment is necessary.  About 50 percent of MinuteClinic visits occur on evenings, weekends and holidays.

“As we have experienced elsewhere in New England and across the United States, MinuteClinic can support the primary care medical home by offering services at convenient locations near where patients live and work and at times when traditional options for care may not be available for Portland area residents,” said Andrew Sussman, M.D., president, MinuteClinic and executive vice president/associate chief medical officer, CVS Health. “We know there is a need for more accessible and affordable health care in Maine, and we believe the demand for MinuteClinic services will continue to grow due, in part, to the shortage of primary care physicians, the aging Baby Boomer population and the influx of newly insured patients through the Affordable Care Act.”

MinuteClinic nurse practitioners specialize in family health care and can diagnose, treat and write prescriptions for common family illnesses such as strep throat and ear, eye, sinus, bladder and bronchial infections. Minor wounds, abrasions, skin conditions and joint sprains are treated, and common vaccinations such as influenza, tetanus, pneumonia and Hepatitis A & B are available at most locations.

In addition, MinuteClinic administers a series of wellness services designed to help patients identify lifestyle changes needed to improve their current and future health, including screenings and monitoring for diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, and smoking cessation and weight loss management services.

Most health insurance is accepted at MinuteClinic. For patients paying cash or credit, treatment prices are posted at each clinic and on www.minuteclinic.com. The cost for most treatment starts at $79 – $99.

At the conclusion of each visit, patients receive educational material, a prescription (when clinically appropriate) and a visit summary. A copy of the diagnostic record can be sent electronically, or by fax or mail to a primary care provider with patient permission.

Approximately half of MinuteClinic patients nationwide do not have a personal physician, according to Sussman. Individuals who visit MinuteClinic without a primary care provider are given a list of physicians in the area who are accepting new patients.

MinuteClinic walk-in medical clinics in Maine operate from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday through Friday; 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

CVS/pharmacy survey: 37 percent of U.S. adults missed a life event because they were feeling ill with flu-like symptoms

Flu vaccinations now available every day at CVS/pharmacy® and MinuteClinic® nationwide, including evening and weekend hours, no appointment necessary

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2015-8-24— /EPR Retail News/ — A new survey from CVS/pharmacy released today found that nearly two in five U.S. adults (37 percent) have missed a life event because they were feeling ill with flu-like symptoms. The most commonly missed events include get-togethers with friends (17 percent), family gatherings (17 percent) and a work meeting or presentation (13 percent).

In the survey, conducted online by Harris Poll on behalf of CVS/pharmacy in July 2015 among over 2,000 U.S. adults ages 18+, nearly three-fifths (58 percent) of Americans indicate that they get a flu vaccine every year or plan to get one this year, with commonly cited reasons being:

  • They believe it is the best way to prevent getting the flu (65 percent);
  • To protect their family from the flu virus (38 percent);
  • And, because they don’t want to miss important life events by having the flu (26 percent).

All CVS/pharmacy and MinuteClinic locations nationwide are now offering flu vaccinations.[1] The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone who is at least 6 months old get a flu shot as soon as the vaccine is available.

“No one wants to get sick with the flu, and getting sick is even worse when it causes us to miss an important life event such as a vacation, wedding, holiday gathering or a child’s big sporting event or recital,” said Tom Davis, RPh, Vice President of Pharmacy Professional Practices at CVS/pharmacy. “The simple fact is that getting an annual flu shot is the best protection available against catching or spreading the flu.”

“It is recommended to get a flu shot as soon as the vaccine is available because it takes a couple of weeks for it to build immunity in order to provide you with the best protection before flu season peaks,” said Nancy Gagliano, Senior Vice President, CVS Health and Chief Medical Officer, CVS/minuteclinic. “You should also get vaccinated every year because influenza strains may change year to year and the vaccines are updated annually.”

Among Americans who have ever received a flu shot, 38 percent indicated that convenience plays a major role in their decision about where to get the vaccination. More than 7,800 CVS/pharmacy stores and nearly 1,000 MinuteClinic locations inside select CVS/pharmacy stores provide flu shots every day, including evenings and weekends, with no appointment needed.

In addition, customers will receive a 20 percent off CVS/pharmacy Shopping Pass when they get a flu shot at CVS/pharmacy or MinuteClinic.[2] The Shopping Pass can be used with the CVS/pharmacy ExtraCare Rewards card to save 20 percent off non-pharmacy purchases up to $100.[3]

Getting the flu shot at CVS/pharmacy or MinuteClinic is also very affordable. Thirty-six percent of Americans who have ever received a flu vaccine indicated that “where their insurance is accepted” is a determining factor for where they get the vaccine administered. The flu vaccine is a preventive service under the Affordable Care Act, fully covered and available at no cost through most insurance plans, including Medicare Part B. CVS/pharmacy and MinuteClinic can directly bill many national and regional health plans that cover all or part of the cost of a flu shot.

Additional findings from the survey include:

  • Two-thirds (67 percent) of employed Americans would go to work even if they were feeling ill with flu-like symptoms.
  • The life events Americans would be most upset about missing because they were feeling ill with flu-like symptoms include missing a vacation getaway (63 percent), family gathering (56 percent), wedding (54 percent), graduation (47 percent) and birthday party (43 percent).
  • 92 percent of Americans say they would take actions to protect themselves from catching the flu — including regularly washing hands as often as possible (77 percent), drinking more water (58 percent), taking vitamins (55 percent), eating more nutritious food (50 percent), wiping down surface areas with sanitizing wipes (46 percent) and regularly using hand sanitizer (45 percent).
  • Just over three fourths of seniors (76 percent), ages 65 and up, get the flu vaccine every year and/or plan on getting the flu shot this year.

The high dose vaccine is available at CVS/pharmacy and MinuteClinic locations for those ages 65 and older. It contains four times the antigens as the regular flu vaccine and is intended to create a stronger immune response for seniors, who are at greater risk of developing severe flu-related illnesses. The quadrivalent flu vaccine is also available and offers protection against an additional influenza B virus than the standard seasonal flu vaccine.

In addition to flu shots, CVS pharmacists and MinuteClinic nurse practitioners and physician assistants are available to provide a number of other vaccinations, including pneumonia and pertussis (whooping cough), among others. Visit www.cvs.com/getvaccinated or www.minuteclinic.com/services/vaccination for more information on the vaccines offered. Certain immunizations have age and location restrictions.

Please visit CVS.com/flu for more information and additional resources. Consumers can also visit www.CVS.com or use the CVS/pharmacy Mobile smartphone app to locate a nearby store.

Comprehensive training shall be provided to clinic staff to ensure their familiarity with the availability and proper use of any relevant equipment, aids and services.

Today’s announcement is the result of collaboration between MinuteClinic and patients with disabilities seeking care at MinuteClinic.

“Retail health clinics will have greater importance to the communities they serve as the shortage of primary care providers continues. MinuteClinic distinguishes itself from its competitors by its commitment to the inclusion of persons with disabilities,” said Andrés J. Gallegos, Esq., a disability rights advocate, who assisted CVS MinuteClinic in the development of its plan.
