Walmart’s new e-commerce fulfillment center in Atlanta, Ga creates 400 full-time jobs in Fulton County

Center to provide 400 full-time jobs and faster online deliveries at lower costs

ATLANTA, Ga., 2015-10-3 — /EPR Retail News/ — Today, Walmart officials and local and state dignitaries attended a sneak preview event of Walmart’s new e-commerce fulfillment center in Atlanta, Ga. The new facility is dedicated to filling online orders and is the latest addition to the next-generation fulfillment network Walmart is building to support its rapidly growing e-commerce business.

The 1.2 million sq. ft. facility in Union City, just south of Atlanta, is the third large-scale e-commerce fulfillment center to open in the U.S. in as many months, and features state-of-the-art automation and warehousing systems. When fully operational, the facility will create nearly 400 full-time jobs in Fulton County. The new large scale centers, including the Atlanta facility, will join existing, smaller e-commerce fulfillment centers, store distribution centers, 4,500 Walmart stores and the company’s world-class transportation fleet to ship online orders fast and efficiently to customers around the country.

“We are excited about what this center provides for our Georgia customers and are grateful to Fulton County for welcoming us to do so,” said Neal Maguire, general manager of the Atlanta fulfillment center. “This center will not only provide jobs and economic development for the community, but it will allow us to fulfill the needs of our customers in a more convenient and efficient fashion.”

New Center, New Jobs for Fulton County

“Georgia’s economic environment, highly skilled workforce and innovative technology scene make Fulton County a qualified location for the new e-Commerce center,” commented Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal. “In choosing this location for a new facility, Walmart is creating jobs and demonstrating that Georgia is a promising home for the new frontier of technology in business.”

“This is wonderful news for South Fulton and I am grateful that Walmart decided to locate its newest e-commerce center — and the nearly 400 jobs it creates — at this location,” said U. S. Representative David Scott, from Georgia’s 13th congressional district. “Additionally, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation have been wonderful corporate citizens and the $300,000 in grants provided today to local organizations are prime examples of their commitment to this community.”

Giving Back to Georgia

The sneak preview event included presentations of $350,000 in grants from Walmart and the Walmart Foundation to four local community groups. The Americas Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia Inc., Senior Citizens Services of Metropolitan Atlanta Inc., CSRA Business League Inc. and Feeding the Valley Inc. each received contributions to assist with their goals of helping those in need. These contributions were made possible through the Walmart Foundation’s Georgia’s State Giving Program (SGP), which supports organizations that create opportunities so people can live better.

Additionally, Walmart continues to fight hunger both in Georgia and across the country. As part of Walmart’s and the Walmart Foundation’s $2 billion commitment to fight hunger through 2015, Walmart stores in Georgia donated approximately 26.4 million pounds of food in fiscal year 2015, or the equivalent of over 22 million meals. Additionally, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation gave more than $50.5 million in cash and in-kind contributions throughout the state of Georgia.

New Centers Provide Fast Deliveries at Lower Cost

This new facility is part of a network — Walmart distribution centers, existing e-commerce facilities, 4,500 Walmart stores and a world-class transportation fleet — that ships packages faster and more efficiently, while offering customers more choices for how they receive online orders.

“We’re rapidly enhancing our fulfillment capabilities to give customers more choices and fast shipping, while keeping our costs down so we can continue to lower our prices,” said Neil Ashe, chief executive officer of Walmart Global eCommerce. “Whether shipping to home or picking up at a store, our digital and physical fulfillment assets come together and let customers choose the most convenient way to receive their online orders.”

Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. acquires the outstanding shares in Yihaodian; taking full ownership of its fast-growing e-commerce business in China

SHANGHAI, CHINA,  2015-7-24 — /EPR Retail News/ — Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE: WMT) today announced it has acquired the outstanding shares in Yihaodian, taking full ownership of its fast-growing e-commerce business in China.  Wang Lu, president and CEO of Walmart Global eCommerce in Asia, will lead Yihaodian as part of his overall executive responsibilities.

With full ownership of Yihaodian, Walmart plans to invest in both accelerating e-commerce and creating a seamless experience for customers across online, mobile and stores.  Walmart, which previously held approximately 51 percent of Yihaodian, acquired the remaining shares from Ping An of China, a financial services group, and the co-founders, former Chairman Gang Yu and former CEO Junling Liu. The two co-founders announced earlier this month that they are leaving Yihaodian, and will continue to serve as Chairman Emeritus and Strategic Executive Advisor respectively to ensure a smooth transition and contribute to the future success of Yihaodian.  Walmart’s planned investments are included in the company’s previously announced e-commerce budget.

“Yihaodian has excelled as one of China’s top e-commerce businesses.  We’re excited about the team at Yihaodian and their strong local e-commerce experience,” said Neil Ashe, president and CEO of Walmart Global eCommerce.  “This local experience, combined with Walmart’s global sourcing and our strong local retail presence and supply chain will allow us to deliver low prices on the products customers need in new and exciting ways.  Our investment in Yihaodian is part of our long-term commitment to grow in China, and we look forward to continuing to play a positive role in the development of the e-commerce industry.

“We thank Gang and Junling for their entrepreneurship and innovation, and for creating a world-class foundation and team to lead Yihaodian going forward.”

Yihaodian will continue operating under its existing name and will maintain its focus on having strong local leadership with a clear understanding of the needs of online consumers in China.

Wang Lu brings extensive experience in the digital space in China, with a strong understanding of how consumers shop on the web and through mobile.  Prior to joining Walmart Global eCommerce, Wang Lu was responsible for managing CBS Interactive in China, including the IT group, Auto group, Women & Fashion group and Lifestyle group.  Previously, he served as Senior Vice President and head of China at CNET Networks, the interactive content company, where he led the development of market leading web properties including ZOL, X-Car and OnlyLady.  He earlier managed the China business for Ziff-Davis Media. Wang Lu has a master’s degree/Executive MBA from Peking University, and a bachelor’s degree from Beijing Union University.

Yihaodian and Ping An of China will maintain a commercial relationship that includes joint marketing efforts.

As the founding shareholder of Yihaodian, Ping An of China has made significant contributions to Yihaodian’s early development. Ping An of China said that after taking into account the Group’s overall Internet finance strategy, it has decided to transfer the entire stake it holds in Yihaodian to Walmart. Ping An will continue its partnership with Walmart and Yihaodian to seek cooperation opportunities for a strong alliance in various areas in the future.

Walmart debutes online shopping portal on Walmart.com for products from suppliers that are leading in sustainability

Unveils online Sustainability Leaders shop at Global Milestone Meeting

SAN BRUNO, Calif., 2015-2-24 — /EPR Retail News/ — Walmart announced today the debut of its Sustainability Leaders shop, an online shopping portal on Walmart.com that helps customers identify and purchase products from suppliers that are leading in sustainability.

The launch of the Sustainability Leaders shop builds on the company’s ambition to provide customers more information about the products they purchase at Walmart. The new portal helps to advance Walmart’s goal to offer customers a way to choose products they can afford, and that are produced in an environmentally and socially responsible way.

The Sustainability Leaders shop is the customer-facing iteration of Walmart’s Sustainability Index, launched in 2009 in collaboration with The Sustainability Consortium (TSC), an independent, third-party organization of academic-based scientists and more than 100 member organizations that creates tools and strategies to drive more sustainable consumer products. Over the last several years, Walmart and TSC have worked with suppliers, several leading non-profit organizations and TSC to build the Sustainability Index.

“The Sustainability Leaders shop on Walmart.com is the first step in helping our customers identify which brands and suppliers are leading the way in sustainability,” explained Neil Ashe, president and CEO of Walmart Global eCommerce. “Our customers can trust us to work with suppliers who have an ongoing commitment to both sustainability and affordability.”

Until now, the Sustainability Index, which gathers and analyzes information about a supplier’s approach to managing its social and environmental impact on the full lifecycle of its products, had only been a tool for Walmart and its suppliers. Now, as part of the Sustainability Leaders shop, important insights from the tool are available to anyone.

The Sustainability Leaders shop takes information from the Index and translates it into an easy-to-understand format for Walmart customers. Products displayed with a badge indicate that their manufacturer ranks as best in class among other suppliers in that product category, based on their responses to detailed category surveys developed by TSC.  The badge symbolizes that the manufacturer of that product is ranked highest among its peers within its category; or in categories where there are many leading manufacturers, products made by any manufacturer that scores over 80 percent, will also qualify for a badge. Although the badge isn’t specific to the individual product’s environmental or social impact, the manufacturer and category level approach is intended to help customers identify companies leading in sustainability.

“We’ve done the heavy lifting to empower our customers to put their money where their heart is,” said Kathleen McLaughlin, senior vice president of sustainability for Walmart. “The Sustainability Leaders shop gives customers the tools to make more informed choices, and it’s a great way for us to do good business.”

Depending on the product category, specific and pertinent factors are used to evaluate a company’s sustainability efforts.  The relevant social and environmental factors for a product are not always obvious, and the Index helps illuminate what matters most for each type of product. Customers can also better understand the issues that TSC has identified as the most important in evaluating sustainability in each product category through a series of fact sheets, also available through the Sustainability Leaders shop.

“TSC tools are used by hundreds of Walmart suppliers across sectors to drive sustainability in the supply chain, and now this information is being directed to Walmart consumers to help inform the choice of products they use every day,” stated Sheila Bonini, TSC CEO. “The Sustainability Consortium is also pleased to provide Walmart shoppers with important insights about what sustainability factors matter most for each product category through the library of fact sheets found in the Sustainability Leaders shop.”
