Poundland keeps things really simple with its 2017 Christmas TV ad

Willenhall, United Kingdom, 2017-Dec-01 — /EPR Retail News/ — Poundland will tonight unveil its 2017 Christmas TV ad that cost just £65,000 to make and a total of £415,000 once the airtime is bought, compared to the £7 million spent by John Lewis, which equates to a private jet or Birmingham’s most expensive house.

Without the need for animated bears, flying reindeers, CGI monsters or an imagination workshop, Poundland proudly heroes the British public and the £1 Christmas products that keep them returning back to Poundland stores.

The new advert sees two passionate Poundland fans traverse the high-streets of the nation asking shoppers to guess how much the discount retailer’s festive favourites are worth, only to be surprised by the £1 price tag.

Following these real-life revelations, the ad reveals Brits confessions that the festive gifts are such good quality they could pass as competitor ranges, that are double or even triple the price.

From screams of surprise at the Christmas Cushion that looks like it’s worth a tenner to the giggles of delight at the Offensive Mug shoppers would pay £5 for, the commercial demonstrates the discount retailer’s continued ability in championing the customer by bringing the best deals directly to them.

Marketing Controller Mark Pym said: “This is how Poundland do Christmas; real customers talking about real products on the high street with real reactions.

“We like to keep things really simple. We don’t need to spend millions to give savvy shoppers a break from reality, create extra merchandise or use mumbo jumbo language to explain our ads.”

This year’s TV campaign returns tonight with two 20-second and one 30-second slots with even more humour, product surprises and shopper’s surprised reactions at 7.15pm on ITV. Poundland fans can view the trailer, extended cuts and exclusive behind-the-scenes content on the Poundland Facebook page now.

About the Poundland 2017 Christmas commercial

Poundland’s Christmas 2017 commercial was directed by Ben Tongue who studied at Halifax University for the big budget of £415,000 – a mere 6% of the John Lewis budget, and with just as much entertainment. Just like the popular discount retailer, this year’s Christmas commercial from Poundland proves you don’t need to spend a lot for good quality.

Poundland announces £1 “Twin Peaks’ chocolate bar to go on sale across the UK on Monday 4 December

Poundland announces £1 “Twin Peaks’ chocolate bar to go on sale across the UK on Monday 4 December

  • Poundland To Launch £1 ‘Twin Peaks’ Chocolate Bar In December
  • The First 500,000 Original Bars to Hit Shelves Across the UK on December 4

Willenhall, United Kingdom, 2017-Nov-29 — /EPR Retail News/ — Poundland today (24 November 2017) confirmed its highly anticipated “Twin Peaks’ £1 chocolate bar will go on sale across the UK for the first time at 8.00 am on Monday 4 December.

The 180g bar that sent Britain barmy when it was first unveiled in June, had its launch unexpectedly delayed – but Poundland will finally launch Twin Peaks in brand new packaging in its 850 UK stores next month.

Customers will then be able to choose a bar for £1 that has 20 per cent more chocolate than Poundland’s best-selling Toblerone.

Created in Birmingham, the home of British chocolate, by specialist Walkers Chocolates, the Poundland original chocolate bar has a distinctive British flavour compared to Toblerone’s Swiss chocolate nougat.

Inspired by Shropshire’s Wrekin and Ercall hills, Twin Peaks will offer a taste sensation, receiving rave reviews in secret blind taste tests* with two in three customers preferring it to Toblerone.

Kraft (also the owners of Cadburys) complained about the shape of Twin Peaks.  In recent years Kraft has fought hard to keep Nestle from registering the KitKat shape, but this summer it argued that it had similar rights in the Toblerone shape. Poundland disagreed with this.

Following positive discussions, the first 500,000 bars, which will be on sale for £1 throughout December in their original shape, are set to be a collectors’ item. After this Poundland will revise the shape so it better represents the outline of the Wrekin and Ercall hills – the inspiration behind Twin Peaks as a British alternative to Toblerone and offering 30g more chocolate.

“In the last 12 months we believe our customers alone have missed out on 250 tonnes of chocolate after the size of their favourite item was chopped,” said Poundland trading controller Chris Burns.

“That’s why we began development on Twin Peaks in the first place”.

“Although it’s been a longer climb than we expected, we’re pleased customers will finally get to taste our Twin Peaks – 180g of delicious, British-made chocolate, for just £1”.

Editors’ Notes

* Taste Tests were conducted for the ITV programme ‘Trouble in Poundland’ using kitchen samples in the Wolverhampton Poundland store on 19 May 2017, with approximately two out of three people preferring the taste of Twin Peaks over Toblerone from a sample of around 100 customers .

The Wrekin is a hill in east Shropshire with a summit of 407 metres (1,335 feet). Standing alongside The Wrekin, the Ercall Hill’s highest point is 140 metres (460 feet). The two peaks are a well-recognised landmark in the Midlands and the Wrekin and Ercall form part of the Church Stretton Complex where different geological terrains meet.

Poundland to accept old pound coins until end of October

Retailer will accept old coins until end of October to help save Brits time and millions

Willenhall, United Kingdom, 2017-Oct-11 — /EPR Retail News/ — As the deadline looms for Brits to empty their pockets and homes of the much-loved round £1 coins, Poundland has today (9 OCT 2017) announced that it will be the first retailer in the country to accept the old coins after they are taken out of circulation on 15 October.

With the Royal Mint estimating there is £500m still in circulation, over 850 Poundland stores up and down the country will accept the old pound coins as part of its ‘Legal Tender Extender’ initiative until 31 October 2017 – more than two weeks beyond any other retailer.

Today’s announcement means Poundland shoppers with old coins stashed in piggy banks or down the side of the sofas will be quids in.

In fact, they will be able to conveniently shop and purchase 3,000-plus products at the high street retailer for an extra two-weeks rather than having to join the expected long queues in banks or post offices over coming weeks.

Poundland’s Managing Director, Barry Williams said: “We are the official home of the pound, so it’s a no brainer that we offer all Brits the opportunity to spend their hard earned round pounds for longer.

“Our Legal Tender Extender initiative means our customers have a little extra time to make the most of their money.

“We’re all about making our customers’ money go further, so providing an extra convenience for shoppers to lighten their pockets while doing the weekly shop rather than making a separate trip to the bank or post office will come as good news.”

All Poundland stores in the UK will accept the current round pound coin up until and including Tuesday 31 October 2017.

Poundland teams up with Birmingham chocolatier to launch own brand chocolate bar “Twin Peaks”

  • Sneak peek of new chocolate bar unveiled in Poundland documentary Trouble in Poundland airing Tuesday 20th June at 9pm on ITV
  • Chocolate bar will be rolled out across Poundland stores in UK
  • Twin Peaks puts all the spaces in the right places and goes head-to-head with continental versions with UK tasteEngland

England, 2017-Jun-21 — /EPR Retail News/ — Poundland today (19 JUN 2017) announced it had partnered with a Birmingham chocolatier to launch a new, own brand chocolate bar called “Twin Peaks”.

The double mountain bar, created in the home of British chocolate by specialist Walkers Chocolates, has a distinctive British flavour compared to more traditional milk nougat bars from Switzerland.

Inspired by the double hill on the top of the local Wrekin Hill in Shropshire, it will be available at Poundland’s famous £1 price point in all stores the first week of July.

Poundland believes Twin Peaks will offer a true taste sensation to competitors, and has already received rave reviews in secret blind taste tests where two in three customers preferred it to the branded alternative.

Development on Twin Peaks began earlier this year after the makers of Toblerone – Poundland’s top-selling item – created uproar by reducing the weight of the bar by 20g and changing the shape of its iconic brand.

Twin Peaks – at 180g – is 20 per cent heavier than its branded equivalent, and offers a double mountain in every packet.

Twin Peaks is manufactured in the West Midlands – for centuries the home of British chocolate-making and the home of Poundland since 1990. With millions set to hit Poundland’s stores over the coming weeks, Twin Peaks will help support UK chocolate manufacturing.

Poundland trading director Barry Williams said of Twin Peaks: “Poundland shoppers are savvy and the change in their favourite chocolate bar last Christmas didn’t go unnoticed. That’s why we’ve created a new £1 alternative for them – the size they wanted, with a British taste, and with all the spaces in the right places.”

A sneak peek of the Twin Peaks chocolate bar can be seen on the Poundland documentary Trouble in Poundland airing on Tuesday 20th June at 9 pm on ITV.
