Starbucks opens the first Princi bakery location in the U.S. at its Starbucks Reserve Roastery in Seattle

  • Acclaimed artisan baker Rocco Princi brings the craft of bread baking, exceptional ingredients and the “Spirito di Milano” to customers for the first time in the United States
  • Freshly baked onsite, the artisanal Italian food experience joins the premium Starbucks Reserve® brand as the exclusive food pairing to its rare, small-lot coffees
  • The Seattle location is part of Starbucks investment in expanding Princi™ globally through its Starbucks Reserve® retail formats as well as standalone Princi boutique stores in 2018

Seattle, 2017-Nov-08 — /EPR Retail News/ — Starbucks Coffee Company (NASDAQ: SBUX) today (November 7, 2017)  announced the opening of the first Princi bakery and café location in the United States at its Starbucks Reserve Roastery in Seattle. The Roastery opened in December 2014 as an homage to coffee, a completely immersive and sensorial space that redefined customers’ expectations of a retail environment. Completing this new customer experience is the introduction of Princi, offering freshly baked Italian food crafted from Rocco Princi’s recipes, which has gained a devoted following in his six stores across Milan and in London’s Soho neighborhood.

Princi will become the exclusive food offering in all new Starbucks Reserve Roastery locations including Shanghai, opening in December 2017, Milan in late 2018, and New York, Tokyo and Chicago thereafter.

“Rocco Princi is an artisan who, at an early age, discovered a love of bread making and through determination as well as an obsession for finding the perfect ingredients, has created an Italian food experience that I think is unparalleled,” said Howard Schultz, executive chairman, Starbucks. “His passion for authentic food and respect for Milanese culture come through in everything he does, and I think our customers are going to fall in love with Princi.”

Born in Calabria, Italy, Rocco Princi began as a baker’s apprentice and opened his first store at the age of 21 in the Villa San Giovanni. With the motto, “hot bread all day,” demand quickly exceeded his expectations and Rocco moved to Milan, opening a shop in 1986. Designed with ovens as the centerpiece of his stores, Rocco Princi and his team bring the theatre of baking to life using simple, yet sacred artisanal techniques, and exceptional ingredients sourced specifically for each fresh food offering. Sourced without compromise and baked without shortcuts is what defines Princi food.

At the newest Princi location in Starbucks Reserve Roastery in Seattle, a team of bakers and chefs bring over 125 years of experience to Princi recipes. Much like Rocco’s European locations, the Seattle store is centered around ovens with food across every daypart baked fresh onsite. More than 100 menu items – from flaky cornetti to focaccia sandwiches filled with salame Milano and mozzarella di bufala or crostata fragola – will be available daily, using ingredients imported from Italy, 25 of which are specifically for Princi. The food will be displayed in abundance as a Commessa guides customers through the breadth of offerings.

“Today, I am realizing a dream that I have had since I was a young man, and I am grateful to Howard for his vision to bring Princi to the world,” said Rocco Princi, founder, Princi. “Having worked side by side with the team that Starbucks has assembled, I have seen firsthand their talent as well as the attention they have given to ensuring that the fresh, authentic, handcrafted ingredients that define the Princi experience are being honored. I am excited and humbled that the people of Seattle will now be able to experience our food.”

In 2016, Starbucks announced that it had joined a global investment team – which includes Milan-based Angel Capital Management and Pekepan Investments – to expand Princi bakeries into international markets. In addition to the Starbucks Reserve Roastery locations, Starbucks plans to open Princi standalone stores starting in 2018.

7‑Eleven launches test program called RENEW at 95 stores in Portland, Seattle and Madison, Wisconsin

IRVING, TEXAS, 2017-Sep-01 — /EPR Retail News/ — 7‑Eleven, Inc. is furthering its commitment to reduce its energy footprint by launching a test program called RENEWTM this month at 95 stores in Portland, Seattle and Madison, Wisconsin.

RENEW is a reduced emissions program 7‑Eleven®is launching in collaboration with GreenPrint, a company promoting sustainability through the retail gasoline, fleet and consumer product industries.

Customers will be able to reduce emissions by simply purchasing the same high-quality fuel they have always pumped at 7‑Eleven stores. GreenPrint will calculate tailpipe emissions from gasoline sales to determine the amount to invest in certified carbon reduction projects to help neutralize those emissions in the atmosphere. Depending on the type of fuel purchased, emissions can be offset by up to 30 percent.

“As the convenience retail leader, we’re uniquely positioned to promote sustainability by bringing innovative programs like RENEW to market,” said Joe DePinto, 7‑Eleven President and Chief Executive Officer. “This program, coupled with our 2025 corporate social responsibility targets, furthers our efforts to reduce our environmental footprint, and offers customers a way to make a positive impact on the environment and their local communities.”

For every gallon of gas purchased in the 7‑Eleven RENEW program, an investment will be made in reforestation, green-scape projects, wildlife protection and renewable energy projects designed to help reduce car emissions. The local, regional and global certified carbon reduction projects are designed to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. As part of the one-year test, 100,000 trees will be planted across the United States in cooperation with the Arbor Day Foundation.

“We are honored to run this test program with a brand like 7‑Eleven that has consistently demonstrated a willingness to be innovative,” said Pete Davis, founder and CEO of GreenPrint. “Their commitment to aggressively pursue sustainability initiatives to benefit the environment sets them apart from competitors. The RENEW program will continue that commitment while creating a unique connection with their customers.”

7‑Eleven announced in 2016 that it was working with Conservation International (CI) to set measurable corporate social responsibility (CSR) goals to reduce its environmental footprint. 7‑Eleven’s CSR mission has three focus areas – planet, products and people. The retailer also joined CI’s Business and Sustainability Council, a forum for corporate leaders taking positive environmental actions in their businesses, to explore mutually beneficial ways to further reduce its environmental impact. Pantheon™ Blend No. 1 is available exclusively at the Starbucks Reserve® Roastery and Tasting Room in Seattle for a limited time

SEATTLE, 2015-1-27 — /EPR Retail News/ — In May 2014 Howard Schultz, Starbucks chairman, president and ceo, came to the Starbucks coffee team with a special request.

He had an idea to celebrate the first Starbucks Reserve® Roastery and Tasting Room, a one-of-a-kind, immersive experience where customers could see the rare small-batch  line of Starbucks Reserve® coffees being roasted. The freshly roasted beans would be delivered to a bar where baristas would create handcrafted beverages using one of six different brewing methods.

“Howard was looking for a special coffee for our Roastery customers, just as a winemaker may have a unique blend that’s available only at the winery,” said Leslie Wolford, senior coffee specialist at Starbucks. “Up to this point, our Starbucks Reserve program featured single-origin coffees – all from one country or growing region, or sometimes even a single farm. He wanted us to break the mold and create our first-ever blend of Starbucks Reserve coffees for our Roastery customers.”

The Creation of Pantheon Blend
Wolford and a team of roasters and coffee experts went to work.

They looked at all the coffees in the Starbucks Reserve® portfolio and started with nine single-origin coffees. Next they roasted and brewed each of them and lined them up on the long tasting room table at Starbucks headquarters in Seattle. From there, the team did a wet blending exercise, spooning different combinations of the coffees – drawing out different flavor notes in each cup.

Each person on the five-member team created two coffees, writing down the recipe on a card that was placed down in front of each cup. The team collectively tasted each of the ten coffees and whittled them down to the top three blends, which were turned over to Starbucks roasters.

“Once we got the blends back from the roasters, we tasted three top recipes for five days and had lots of opinions,” Wolford said. “Then we tried each coffee as a pour-over, in a press, as a shot of espresso, and as a latte. One coffee rose to the top. We invited Howard in to sample, and Pantheon Blend was born.”

Ultimately, Pantheon™ Blend No. 1 was a combination of coffees from Guatemala, Colombia, and Java. Coincidentally those are all coffees on Starbucks original menu board at Pike Place Market store in 1971.

“The experience of this coffee comes in waves,” Wolford said. “We started with Guatemala as the anchor – it’s rich and complex. Next comes the Colombia, which has black currant notes with some sweetness that’s not too overpowering. Finally, the semi-washed Java brings in more of the body and savory notes in the coffee.”

This first blend of Starbucks Reserve coffees holds a special significance for Wolford, who has tasted coffees for Starbucks for more than 20 years.

“To me, this coffee speaks to our history and our future,” Wolford said. “Howard chose the name Pantheon, because it reflects its place among an illustrious group of extraordinary coffees. The best of the best.”

Pantheon™ Blend No. 1 is available exclusively at the Starbucks Reserve® Roastery and Tasting Room in Seattle for a limited time.
