Seb James, Group Chief Executive, said:

“I am pleased to be reporting on another good year at Dixons Carphone. Despite a lively political backdrop, we have been able to continue to grow our business and maintain very high levels of customer satisfaction across the Group. We have continued to evolve our approach to multi-channel and we have gained an even better understanding of how the online and offline worlds work together to help customers make great choices on these important and life-enhancing technologies.

Our full year like-for-like sales of 4% over the year is pleasing across the Group; in the last quarter, sales in the UK & Ireland were – especially in phone – impacted by the later launch of the iconic (and excellent) Samsung S8 and by a late Easter. Given our performance despite this headwind, our view is that the UK consumer continues to be active in the market, but we anticipate no let-up in their – very rational – view that price and service are critical factors in deciding where to shop.

Finally, I would like to thank our 42,000 colleagues in eleven countries around the world for their tireless work this year.  Electrical and phone retail can be a complex and lively business, but our colleagues have done a great job of making it look easy.”

UK & Ireland

The UK & Ireland has had a good year with full year like-for-like revenues up 4% driven by a strong electricals performance. This has more than offset a tough year in phone, hampered by product issues, a limited supply in the market and some shift to SIM only. Total revenues grew by 2%. Q4 like-for-like revenues grew 2%, within this electricals grew strongly, whilst phone was impacted by the deferred release of Samsung S8 which was pushed back five weeks. During the year we have all but completed the transformation of our stores to the 3-in-1 format. We have also acquired and integrated Simplifydigital and doubled our market share of the broadband switch market, launched a brand new Carphone Warehouse web platform, whilst continuing to be competitive on price and maintaining very high levels of customer satisfaction.

Nordics

The Nordics delivered full year like-for-like revenues up 1% against a relatively tough backdrop. We have been focussed on managing both sales and margins whilst remaining price competitive and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction. Q4 like-for-like revenues grew 2% against a tough comparative. The new warehouse at Jönköping is now fully operational and we have completed the integration of the Fona business in Denmark.

Southern Europe

Southern Europe has had another very good year, delivering full year like-for-like revenues up 6%. With Greece a particularly strong performer, the business continues to gain market share and improve its service and delivery propositions and in Spain the SmartHouse initiative is providing good momentum against a tough overall market backdrop.

Dixons Carphone plc releases Christmas 2016/17 Trading and Management Update

London, 2017-Jan-24 — /EPR Retail News/ —

Trading update (10 weeks ended 7 January 2017)

Q3 2016/17 revenue Year-on-year
Sterling
Year-on-year
local currency
Like-for-like1
UK & Ireland 4% 3% 6%
Nordics 15% 1% (1)%
Southern Europe 24% 6% 5%
CWS 38% 34% n/a
Group 8% 3% 4%

1 Like-for-like revenues are calculated based on Headline store and internet sales using constant exchange rates. New stores are included where they have been open for a full financial year both at the beginning and end of the financial period. Revenues from franchise stores are excluded and closed stores are excluded for any period of closure during either period. Customer support agreement, insurance and wholesale revenues along with revenue from Connected World Services and other non-retail businesses are excluded from like-for-like calculations. Revenues from Carphone Warehouse stores-within-a-store are included in like-for-like

Note
In the UK & Ireland, like-for-like revenue improved by approximately 4% as a result of sales transferred from closed stores. This mainly affected UK&I electricals, where year-on-year sales for these products were +5% with like-for like revenue at +9%. We anticipate that this programme will be substantially complete by the end of the financial year.

Seb James, Group Chief Executive, said:

“I am pleased to be reporting another good Christmas period of growth – our fifth consecutive year. At a time of significant political uncertainty around the World, it was heartening to see that customers were choosing to enjoy the benefits that new technologies could bring to their lives during this holiday season. This year, as a result of our scale in all of our markets, we were able to offer prices that were truly ground-breaking during both our Black Friday week and our annual Boxing Day week sales – while maintaining margins – and we believe that we have outperformed the market during the period. As a result, and despite the fact that there is quite a bit of the year to go, we anticipate a meaningful uplift in year-on-year profitability this year over last and confirm our outlook in line with market consensus at £475m-£495m of headline profit before tax for the year ending 29 April 2017.

It was interesting to see the shape of peak trading this year: Black Friday was our biggest ever across the Group and in the UK we saw trading stretch further across the week as well. Customers across the Nordics have taken Black Friday truly to their hearts, although the Nordic market was a little quieter than normal across the period. The Nordic team took the decision to optimise margins which were up year-on-year as a consequence. In all markets it was a strong year online with significant growth, including white goods. Patchy availability of the larger, higher margin phones and tablets made these categories tougher this year but – on the other hand – offers up opportunities for next year where we do not expect the same issues. Large screen TV, in our view a bellweather for consumer sentiment, showed a solid performance over peak in all markets which we were glad to see. Finally, the KNOWHOW trial in Leeds is achieving fantastic NPS levels and we are also delighted to welcome a very experienced and senior CEO for this division, Feilim Mackle, with a remit to transform and grow our successful services proposition.

Generating a successful Christmas means starting planning in January, and the teams are already hard at work making sure that our next Christmas season will be even better. I would like to thank my remarkable, hard-working and resilient colleagues for the time and effort that they have put in over this holiday period to achieve these results. I am very proud to be a part of this great company, as we look forward to another year of innovation and growth.”

Dixons Carphone launches social media campaign #ThereForMe on Heads Together World Mental Health Day event

LONDON, 2016-Oct-12 — /EPR Retail News/ — Today (October 10, 2016), Dixons Carphone will team up with The Mix and the Heads Together campaign to celebrate inspirational people who have provided psychological and mental health support to someone in their time of need.

During a special Heads Together World Mental Health Day event at the London Eye and County Hall, Dixons Carphone will launch #ThereForMe, a social media campaign to highlight how everyone has tough times and thank those people who are there for us when we need them.

Dixons Carphone is a Founding Partner of Heads Together – a campaign spearheaded by The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry, which aims to end stigma around mental health and change the conversation from fear and shame, to confidence and support. The campaign wants everyone to feel comfortable with their everyday mental wellbeing and be able to support friends and families through difficult times. Heads Together is celebrating this support on World Mental Health Day and at the London Eye event the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry will meet people who have helped each other with their mental health, to find out about the support that can make all the difference.

Heads Together brings together eight UK charities which reflect the passions of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry, including Dixon Carphone’s charity partner of fifteen years, The Mix, who support over 2 million young people each year through digital and helpline services. It is hoped that the #ThereForMe campaign will also raise vital funds to support the essential work that The Mix does.

Anyone wanting to take part in #ThereForMe is encouraged to visit www.thereforme.org and follow the easy three step process. Alternatively, they can call into any Currys, PC World or Carphone Warehouse store and ask a store colleague for assistance.

Already taking part in #ThereForMe are GMTV star Andrew Castle and Dixons Carphone CEO Seb James.

Speaking of the importance of this campaign to Dixons Carphone, Group Chief Executive, Seb James, said: “Sadly we all experience tough times directly or indirectly at some point in our life, and although the catalyst may vary, the impact on our own mental health and those around us can be immense. As with everyone, mental wellbeing impacts my ability to be a good husband, father, son, friend and colleague, so I am delighted to be supporting Heads Together with our charity partner The Mix and raising awareness on World Mental Health Day.”

CEO of The Mix, Chris Martin, said: “Every day, The Mix works with young people struggling with their mental health through our digital, social and mobile services. We are enormously excited to be joining Dixons Carphone and the Heads Together campaign to launch the #ThereForMe campaign online and in Currys PC World and Carphone Warehouse stores across the country. This innovative use of social media is a huge step towards challenging stigma around talking about our mental health by celebrating the invaluable role that friends and family play in supporting our wellbeing when we struggle.”

Louise Jones, a member of the Heads Together London Marathon team for The Mix, said: “When I bashed my foot playing hockey in school, I knew I had to make it better but needed support to make that happen. When I hit rock bottom with my mental health, I knew I had to make it better but needed support to make that happen. Being in control of yourself, physically AND mentally, often can’t happen without support. And that’s ok. We need to acknowledge that, and appreciate it. I would not be here, right now, without the support of those closest to me, professionals, organisations like The Mix… and running! So thank you. For believing in my ability to get better, but giving me a push to get there.”

Across 1,000 Carphone Warehouse and Currys PC World stores in the UK and Ireland between 10th and 16th October, people can have their photo taken with a specially designed #ThereForMe photo frame. To find details of your local store or to simply upload a picture in the comfort of your own home, please visit: www.thereforme.org and help banish the negative stigma surrounding mental health. To make a donation to The Mix and help fund their vital advice service for young people across the UK, please visit: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/fund/ThereForMe.

Notes to editors:

My name is Milca, I’m 20 and from London. I want to say a big thank you to James and The Mix for supporting me during my time of crisis.

I have EUPD, emotionally unstable personality disorder. It means that I deal with long episodes of depression, anxiety and panic attacks. I have also self-harmed and made attempts to take my own life. My disorder has caused a devastating impact on my life – not only has it affected my studies, but it meant I often ended up in hospital.

A few years ago I was directed to The Mix by ChildLine. At the time I was experiencing problems with food and had worsening urges to self-harm, but after speaking to James and others in the Mix community, I learnt to look for healthy distractions, like eating properly and exercising, instead of engaging in more harmful behaviours. I then started using the discussion boards, and with James and The Mix’s encouragement, I found I was able to support others, using my own experience. I also was able to express how I was feeling – it felt good knowing that I had the platform to do that, like I was being heard.

I’m currently studying for a BSc in Bioscience and I hope to be a clinical scientist or perhaps work in dentistry. I’m still an active member of The Mix’s community and just like James, I’m helping to provide a safe space for young people to talk about what’s on their minds and share support.

“I learnt to look for healthy distractions, like eating properly and exercising, instead of engaging in more harmful behaviours.”

About #ThereForMe

Launching on World Mental Health Day, October 10th, #ThereForMe will encourage people to take one simple action: to go into any Dixons Carphone store (TBC) and have a photo taken in a photo frame holding up a sign with the name of a person who has supported them through a challenging time.

These photos will be shared on social media with the hashtag #ThereForMe and uploaded to our campaign microsite, which will also provide an option to make a donation to The Mix. For those that can’t visit a store there will also be the opportunity to upload your photo online and we will encouraging as many people to say thanks to someone that was #ThereForMe

About The Mix and Heads Together

Dixons Carphone’s charity partner, The Mix, is a confidential multi-channel help service, supporting the physical and mental wellbeing of young people under 25, whatever their issue, through the technology of their choice.

The remarkable work The Mix is doing to safeguard the mental well-being of our nation’s young people has gained the support of the ‘Heads Together’ campaign, spearheaded by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry. This campaign is working hard to change the conversation around mental health, from one of shame and prejudice, to one of greater acceptance and understanding.

As the 2017 Virgin Money London Marathon Charity of the Year, The Mix and the seven other charity partners working to end the stigma surrounding mental health have a huge platform upon which to raise both funds and awareness.

Seb James, Group Chief Executive, said: “We have had another very good quarter and I am happy to be reporting this level of performance today. We are delivering pleasing growth in all markets and continued high levels of customer satisfaction, and, thus far, continue to see no detectable impact of the Brexit vote on consumer behaviour in the UK.

We have an ambitious programme of development right across the Group this year, and this is being delivered on plan. In the UK & Ireland, our exciting new eCommerce platform for Carphone Warehouse is now live, and our 3-in-1 property programme is well on track. In addition, we are now able to deliver the whole Dixons Carphone small-product range to customers across 500 Carphone Warehouse stores, making us one of the biggest and most convenient click-and-collect organisations in the UK. In the Nordics, we will soon start serving customers from our new, enormous, and state-of-the-art small-product warehouse in Sweden. This has been delivered on time, and slightly better than budget.

In our Know how division, we continue to plan for our Leeds services pilot later this month and develop our brand and propositions. We are seeing real progress in our Connected World Services business as well, and have signed a new agreement with TalkTalk which sees us expanding our distribution activity significantly. The Sprint rollout continues, and we now have 31 stores across 5 regions. The implementation of honeyBee is also going well at Sprint, and we have a strong pipeline of potential new honeyBee clients.

Looking forward, we are optimistic about the future and about our ability to continue to outperform, without in any way being complacent. We live in a world with increasingly discerning customers and with more moving parts than ever and we will continue to succeed only by remaining nimble and determined. We are lucky to have such a strong cohort of people to make this happen, and I would like to finish by thanking them for their hard work so far this year.”

(1) Like-for-like revenues are calculated based on Headline store and internet sales using constant exchange rates. New stores are included where they have been open for a full financial year both at the beginning and end of the financial period.
