Shop Direct raised £440,000 for Claire House’s new site in Liverpool

Liverpool,UK, 2017-Nov-01 — /EPR Retail News/ — Shop Direct has raised £440,000 in just 12 months to digitally equip Claire House’s new site, which will support hundreds of seriously and terminally ill children in Liverpool and the wider North West.

In September 2016, the 4,700-strong team at Shop Direct voted for Claire House Children’s Hospice as its charitable partner of the year for 2016/17. The charity helps seriously ill children live life to the full by creating wonderful experiences and bringing a sense of normality to family life.

Since then, colleagues across the etail giant’s sites in Liverpool and Manchester have undertaken a variety of fundraising activities including a charity ball for over 1,000 people, mountain climbing, fun days, worldwide marathons, skydiving, cycling and a digital dog show.

Shop Direct has also worked with Claire House to form a new innovation board, which is helping the charity to define what a world class digital hospice is and deliver the plans, which will create a lasting legacy for the North West.

The corporate partnership, which is Claire House’s biggest to date, has helped the charity put in place futureproof digital infrastructure like cabling, Wi-Fi and server technology at its new site located in the West Derby area of Liverpool. In addition, Claire House is modernising paper-based systems so its teams can deliver a more personalised service while caring for children in their own homes, as well as at the site.

The team at Shop Direct is also helping to fund and design an interactive multi-media suite for use by the children and families who visit the centre. It will include cutting-edge technology and innovative sensory treatments.

Alex Baldock, group CEO at Shop Direct, said: “We’re passionate about the North West and helping our local communities, but even we were blown away by the huge, huge difference Claire House makes in the lives of children and their families. It’s a charity that’s close to a lot of our colleagues’ hearts, and we were all delighted to support them.

“Everyone at Shop Direct has got behind Claire House in some style; raising more than we’ve ever raised before in a charity partnership and smashing our original £400,000 target. Our colleagues’ ambition and commitment has been inspirational; from the person who is completing seven marathons to the colleague who got a Claire House tattoo.

“We’re delighted that the money we’ve raised will help to transform the charity’s new site, making a massive difference to children and their families’ for years to come. We can’t wait for the next stage of our partnership, which will see us work together on a cutting-edge multimedia suite.”

David Pastor, Chief Executive at Claire House, commented: “Not only has this been Claire House’s largest corporate partnership, it’s been one of our most successful, with both organisations working closely together on a common goal; to support the children and families we care for.

“We’re so grateful to everyone at Shop Direct who have got behind our cause so wholeheartedly and really helped us kick start our journey to reaching every family that needs us.”

Shop Direct hosted the 16th Agile Roundabout tech meetup at its newly opened London hub in Victoria

Liverpool,UK, 2017-Aug-11 — /EPR Retail News/ — 100 technologists came together at Shop Direct’s new London hub to hear the latest best practice and developments in microservices at the 16th Agile Roundabout tech meetup.

The event, which took place on 3 August and was sponsored by recruitment firm TRG, heard from Shop Direct’s Seb Carss, Just Eat’s Michal Franc and Kobalt Music’s Jeremy Ryan, and was the first event to be held at the office.

Attendees were told how microservices is helping Shop Direct be “more productive and deliver more value, more quickly” to its customers.

To illustrate the power and versatility of microservices, Carss, a principal systems engineer at the pureplay etailer, built a Ramen restaurant finding app during his presentation and invited attendees to use it at the end of the night.

Shop Direct’s newly opened 25,000 sq ft London hub in Victoria, which is planned with the company’s shift towards agile working practices at its centre, has capacity for 250 people and will host colleagues working across data science, IT, eCommerce, product and brand.

Shop Direct’s Simon Halkyard, who helped to organise the event, said: “It was great to host so many enthusiastic technologists at our new office for what was a really fun event. Microservices is increasingly being used by organisations big and small, and it was a hugely engaging topic on the night.

“We’re new here, so we want to throw ourselves into the London tech community. We definitely want this meetup to be the first of many here at Shop Direct.”

The next Agile Roundabout meetup is on IT transformation and will be at River Island’s Shoreditch offices. For more information, visit the Agile Roundabout meetup page.

Shop Direct hosts 200-strong UX event at Liverpool HQ

Liverpool,UK,, 2017-Jun-20 — /EPR Retail News/ — Industry collaboration, diversity and encouraging a wider breadth of early stage talent into user experience (UX) to support digital growth in the region were among the hot topics discussed at Shop Direct’s inaugural UX Cubed conference, which took place at its Liverpool HQ on 15 June.

The company, which has the biggest UX team in UK retail at 36 people, hosted the one-day event in its state of the art Cube conferencing facility in conjunction with Northern User Experience Liverpool and digital, marketing and design recruitment consultancy, Forward Role.

UX Cubed brought together the region’s UX teams, agencies, academics and students to hear insights from industry leaders from the BBC, MoneySupermarket, Rental Cars, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, ThoughtWorks, Liverpool Girl Geeks, User Zoom, Sigma, Content Square and What Users Do.

Sam Barton, head of UX at Shop Direct, commented on the event: “Our retail and technology director, Jon Rudoe, said in his opening address at UX Cubed that ‘things like this didn’t used to happen’, but we think it’s vital that they happen now, here in the North West.

“Through industry collaboration, we can start realising the big opportunities and solving the big challenges in UX and the wider North West digital sector.”

Highlights from the day included The BBC’s Ray Mosley talking about how UX professionals can be more influential; Liverpool Girl Geeks’ Chelsea Slater explaining how her organisation is giving girls from ‘generation Z’ unique opportunities to get into tech in the city; NUX and Sigma’s Chris Bush exploring inclusive usability in UX; MoneySupermarket’s Rich Clark highlighting how ‘sprints’ are helping his company to innovate at pace, and Iain Hennessey from Alder Hey showcasing how his team innovates to improve the children’s hospital and patient outcomes.

One of the main topics explored during the panel sessions was how to go about attracting more early stage talent into UX. Recent research from Shop Direct and Forward Role found that just one in four North West-based UX professionals planned for a career in the discipline and only 2% studied a UX-specific vocational course before starting their careers.

Sam Barton said: “There’s a lack of awareness around UX in the North West for would-be professionals and we want to change that.”

In the last six years, Shop Direct’s UX team has grown from six to 36 people. As well as running a successful internship programme, the team engages with universities to educate students about careers in UX.

Barton continued: “We see engaging with universities and students as crucial for our business, because the right awareness for the right people at the right time is vital in getting people into UX.

“Collaboration with other digital companies in the region is also critical if we’re to create the awareness, education and early stage opportunities to develop the talent for North West UX to continue being a success story.

“That’s why UX Cubed was important for us and why we’ll look to host similar events in future. Watch this space.”

Retail Week Awards 2017: Shop Direct wins OC&C pureplay etailer of the year three times in a row ; CEO Alex Baldock crowned Clarity retail leader of the year

Liverpool,UK, 2017-Mar-13 — /EPR Retail News/ — Shop Direct last night (9 March 2017) became the first company to win the OC&C pureplay etailer of the year three times in a row at the Retail Week Awards 2017, the industry’s equivalent of the Oscars.

CEO Alex Baldock was also crowned the Clarity retail leader of the year to cap a great night for the UK’s second largest pureplay, which counts Very.co.uk and Littlewoods.com amongst its digital department store brands.

The Retail Week Awards 2017, which attracted over 1,600 attendees from across the industry, were judged by a panel of sector heavyweights including leaders from Debenhams, IKEA and Karen Millen.

They praised the company for doing ‘pioneering things’ and entering the digital era ‘in style, going further than almost any business’ as it scooped the award for best pureplay.

The judges also celebrated Baldock for ‘the tough choices’ he has made during Shop Direct’s transformation as he picked up the award for retail leader.

Alex Baldock said: “To have the strong, innovative and successful business we’re building recognised by our peers is a massive compliment.

“And to win best pureplay etailer for the third time in a row shows we’re becoming the world class digital retailer we’re striving to be.

“I’m honoured to be recognised as leader of the year, but it’s the strength of our entire team that’s driven our success. This is our award.

“We’ve had another fantastic 12 months, but we’ve only scratched the surface of what’s possible.

“Over the next 12 months, AI will start to change the game for us, from personalisation through to credit; V by Very will become a £200m brand, and we’re making a big investment in building a digital workplace fit for the future.

“It all adds up to another year of growth and innovation – and we can’t wait for what’s next.”

  • We are also applying AI to our credit decisioning capabilities, meaning even faster, more personalised outcomes for our customers, and even better credit decisions and risk discipline for our business

Alex Baldock, CEO at Shop Direct, said:

“We helped millions of families afford the brands they wanted this Christmas. It’s what makes us special and gave us another record festive period.

“Shoppers chose convenience; being able to shop via smartphone was top of their Christmas lists. Most of the growth in retail is coming from online, and the growth in online is coming from mobile. We continue to put mobile first – and it paid off this Christmas.

“Our customers don’t want to feel like one of the crowd; they expect a unique experience. It’s what we gave them before, during and after they shopped this Christmas. Now, we’re using the power of AI to take personalisation to the next level.

“Personal shoppers shouldn’t be the preserve of just a few, or for just special occasions. Over the coming year, we intend to start democratising this service, like we have with famous brands through our credit offering.

“Etailers have already overtaken stores when it comes to convenience. Now AI-fuelled technology like chatbots and virtual reality has the potential to leave bricks and mortar behind in offering the best personal service. We believe it’s the next big shift in retail and financial services, and we plan to be at the vanguard.

“We know the market will be tough in 2017; we’ve still got a lot of work to do and we’re nowhere near the full potential of this business. But we’re confident that by continuing to invest in what makes us special, we’ll deliver another record year of sales and profit in 2017.”

Shop Direct to support the development of a new digital app for Alder Hey Children’s Hospital

Shop Direct to support the development of a new digital app for Alder Hey Children’s Hospital

Liverpool,UK, 2016-Oct-18 — /EPR Retail News/ — Colleagues at Shop Direct have raised £210,000 in just 12 months to support the development of a new digital app for Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.

In September 2015, the 4,700-strong team at Shop Direct voted for Alder Hey Children’s Charity as its charitable partner of the year for 2015/16. Since then, colleagues across the etail giant’s sites in Liverpool and Manchester have undertaken a variety of fundraising activities, from climbing mountains, singing, running, cycling, abseiling, playing ‘beat the goalie’ and completing their own version of The Biggest Loser, smashing their initial target of £200,000.

Members of Shop Direct’s multi-award winning ecommerce team have also been working with Alder Hey’s innovation team to develop the app – the first of its kind in the country – providing expert insight and advice on design, development and personalization. The shared vision of the Alder Hey and Shop Direct teams is to revolutionize the patient experience by harnessing the power of consumer technology to help patients be better informed, calmer, more entertained and, as a result, healthier.

ICE, a Wirral-based behaviour change organization, has now begun work to develop the app, which will include a digital map enabling patients to explore and familiarize themselves with the hospital and their ward before they visit the hospital. Users will be able to find out everything they need to know before their visit, from where to park to what to pack and what their rooms will look like. The app will also feature games, providing entertainment and much-needed distraction for patients to reduce anxiety while they wait. A rewards scheme will also be used to encourage healthy lifestyle choices.

Ultimately, Alder Hey’s aim for the digital hospital programme is to further develop the app and join all of this to a secure patient information system, which will hold key information about the patient, such as their likes, dislikes and specific needs. This will remove the need for families to repeatedly provide the same information at every visit and ensure that they receive a more personalised service. The app is expected to launch in 2017.

Alex Baldock, group CEO at Shop Direct, said: “Alder Hey is a charity that’s been close to our hearts at Shop Direct for a long time and I was delighted when our colleagues voted last year to support the development of the Digital Alder Hey app. We’re proud of our heritage in the North West and it was important to us to select a charity that has a significant impact in our local communities. Alder Hey does that and then some.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the effort everyone at Shop Direct has put in to raise £210,000 over the last 12 months. Our colleagues’ ambition, passion and commitment has surpassed even our own expectations. As a team, we’re pleased that we’ve also been able to provide digital skills and expertise to help Alder Hey develop the app and get the project off the ground. We look forward to continuing our strategic partnership with Alder Hey on this important project, which will make such a difference to so many children and families across the North West, and to seeing the final product next year.”

Iain Hennessey, consultant paediatric surgeon and clinical lead for innovation at Alder Hey, said: “Shop Direct has in common with Alder Hey a drive to innovate and do things differently, which has made them the perfect partner for us in developing our digital hospital vision. Together, we’ve been exploring how we can apply Shop Direct’s digital retail expertise to the hospital environment to create our own online ‘shop front’ for Alder Hey. We’ve also been overwhelmed by the engagement of the entire Shop Direct team in smashing their £200,000 target for our children’s charity, which will go such a long way to enable us to make the Digital Alder Hey app a reality.

“Thank you to everyone at Shop Direct from all of us at Alder Hey. We couldn’t have achieved what we have without your expert advice and fundraising. You are our heroes.”

Shop Direct reports strong underlying profit before tax growth in the 53 weeks to 30 June 2016

Liverpool,UK, 2016-Sep-07 — /EPR Retail News/ — Shop Direct, the UK’s second largest pure play digital retailer, generated strong underlying profit before tax (PBT)1 growth in the 53 weeks to 30 June 2016.

The group, which operates digital department stores Very.co.uk, Littlewoods.com, VeryExclusive.co.uk and LittlewoodsIreland.ie, grew underlying PBT by 43.6% to £150.4 m and sales by 4.3% to £1.86bn2. The period represented Shop Direct’s first full financial year as a pureplay digital retailer, having ceased catalog production in January 2015.

The strong underlying PBT increase was driven by 15.9% sales growth at the group’s largest and fastest growing online department store Very.co.uk3, which became a £1bn-plus brand for the first time; expansion in mobile transactions, which now make up 62% of online sales; and continued cost discipline across the business.

Another strong set of results; the fourth consecutive year of sales and profit growth

Underlying PBT growth of 43.6% to £150.4m (2015: £104.7m), with sales up 4.3% to £1.86bn (2015: £1.78bn)

  • Very.co.uk delivered sales growth of 15.9% to £1.12bn (2015: £967.8m)
  • A record-breaking festive period; sales increased 6% year-on-year for the seven weeks to 25 December 2015
  • Black Friday (27 November 2015) was the busiest trading day on record, with orders at Very.co.uk up 65% year-on-year

Mobile-first approach paid off, with 62% of online sales from mobile devices (2015: 56%)

  • Web traffic across the Shop Direct sites grew by 12% to reach 1.2m visits per day on average (2015: 1.1m visits per day), with daily traffic from smartphones increasing by 42% to more than 638k visits
  • Customer trend toward shopping on the move continued, with orders via smartphones increasing by 46% compared with 2015
  • The group added new features including push notifications and touch ID to its 4.5 star-rated MyVery app, which is nearing 1m downloads

The strategy – focusing on Shop Direct’s purpose, to make good things easily accessible to more people – is in full swing and working well

Selling more of customers’ favourite brands

  • 150 more famous names were added to Shop Direct’s roster of product brands in 2016, including the likes of Bose, Whistles, Samsonite and Yves Saint Laurent, taking the total to more than 1,300 across clothing, footwear, home, electrical, beauty, seasonal and luxury fashion
  • Brand optimisation continued, with customers of Isme.com, Woolworths.co.uk and KandCo.com migrated to give greater focus to Very.co.uk and Littlewoods.com

Big data and technology helped to create one of retail’s most cutting edge, personalized experiences for customers

  • Shop Direct continued to build its platform and proprietary technology across data, personalization, credit decisioning and pricing
  • Driven by machine learning, the group is now personalizing more customer touchpoints than ever – from customer emails and off-site advertising to homepage content, on-site sort orders, top navigation menus and product recommendations deeper within the shopping journey – and also begun trialling personalized service with the aim of building deeper relationships with customers
  • These developments helped Shop Direct to become the first company to win Retail Week’s pureplay etailer of the year award for two years in a row

Continued to invest in unique ways for customers to spread the cost

  • The group maintained its continued focus on customer quality, with bad debt in line with the prior year as a percentage of the overall debtor book
  • The group has initiated a £50m financial services personalisation programme in partnership with IBM, to create ground-breaking capabilities to give customers financial services products tailored to their specific needs

More to come as Shop Direct backs new own brand and artificial intelligence

Adding even more brands customers will love

  • The first full collection for Shop Direct’s new own label brand ‘V by Very’ launched to consumers on 5 September 2016; through the label – which incorporates high quality, design-led lines across womenswear, menswear and childrenswear – the group is targeting accelerated growth in the UK fashion market
  • VeryExclusive.co.uk, Shop Direct’s luxury fashion destination, is set to unveil a premium menswear offer in autumn/winter 2016, with brands including Barbour, Kenzo and Aquascutum signed up for launch

Investing further in big data and technology to even better understand and serve customers

  • The group is continuing to invest in and test new disruptive technology to further personalise the user experience for customers, including using data, predictive models and artificial intelligence (AI) to build a programmatic and automated customer management engine; this will enable Shop Direct to create an even more personalised customer journey, from more relevant and timely email, SMS, push notifications, social media and on-site communications, to real-time, relevant special offers for each customer
  • Shop Direct is also working with IBM Watson to explore AI-driven conversational user interfaces for its MyVery app; technology that will allow customers to talk to Very.co.uk as they would a friend on WhatsApp, and receive personalised messages to make their shopping experience even easier
  • The group has built a new senior team to strengthen and accelerate its data-fuelled approach to ecommerce, with Sasha Berson hired from Groupon to join the executive board as group strategy and customer director, Assi Gol brought in from McKinsey & Company as customer intelligence director and Gael Decoudu hired from Vistaprint as head of data science and digital analytics

Alex Baldock, CEO at Shop Direct, said:

“We’re happy to report a fourth consecutive year of sales and profit growth. We’ve stayed focused on our strategy of bringing great products within reach of more people, and it’s working well for us.

“2016 was our first full year as a pureplay etailer. Removing the shackles of the catalogue has been liberating, and has allowed us to invest in the areas that matter most to our customers – making their shopping experience easier and more personalised, particularly on mobile.

“This was the year our investments in technology really started to pay off. We’ve made big strides in m-commerce, big data and personalisation. But there’s a lot more to play for in these areas. In particular, we believe that artificial intelligence can change the game for us in data and personalisation. We’re deploying it already and are serious about going much further.

“We continue to gain market share profitably, and are on course for another record year of sales and profit. We’re confident that, if we stay true to our strategy and to what makes us special, we’ll continue to succeed.”

Shop Direct adopted the full IFRS accounting framework for the first time this period, having previously used the UK GAAP accounting standard; the group’s 2014/15 financial results have therefore been restated under IFRS for the purpose of comparison.

1 Underlying profit before tax calculated as profit before tax, exceptional costs, fair value adjustments and IAS 19 (Employee Benefits)/IFRIC 14 from continuing operations.

2 Shop Direct’s 2015/16 financial year was a 53 week-year. On a 52-week basis, the group’s 2015/16 sales were £1.83bn, an increase of 2.4% compared to the 2014/15 52-week financial year.

3 On a 52-week basis, Very.co.uk’s sales increased by 13.9% compared to the 2014/15 52-week financial year.

Liverpool,UK, 2016-Jul-27 — /EPR Retail News/ — Shop Direct, the UK’s second largest pureplay online retailer, has announced its third data-focused senior appointment in under a month, bringing in McKinsey & Company junior partner Assi Gol to lead its customer intelligence teams.

Assi, who will take up the position of customer intelligence director in September 2016, will be charged with even further strengthening and accelerating the development of Shop Direct’s data-fuelled approach to ecommerce.

He will oversee the data science and data strategy teams, whose aims are to uncover insights that will improve and further personalize the user experience across the company’s Very.co.uk,Littlewoods.com and VeryExclusive.co.uk retail brands – helping Shop Direct on its journey to become a world class digital retailer.

During eight years in his last role at global management consulting firm McKinsey & Company in Israel and London, Assi successfully used data to develop growth strategies and transform customer experiences for retailers and other consumer-facing global businesses.

He will report to the company’s incoming group strategy and customer director Sasha Berson, who will join the executive board from his role as Groupon’s EMEA chief marketing officer and vice president in September 2016. In late June 2016, the etailer also announced the appointment of Gael Decoudu as head of data science. Gael will report to Assi from September.

Alex Baldock, CEO at Shop Direct, said:
“Our rich customer data is the core of our business. It’s not just helping us create one of the world’s most personalised shopping experiences; it helps our people make better commercial decisions. Assi will help us take our data science and analytics to the next level, and give customers the unique experiences we know they love.”

Assi commented:
“Shop Direct has a clear and ambitious vision, and data and personalisation are central to that. The company is pushing the boundaries when it comes to offering the most relevant customer experiences – and I can’t wait to start playing my part in helping us become a world class digital retailer.”

Assi takes up the position previously held by Dene Jones, who left Shop Direct earlier this year.

Liverpool,UK, 2016-Jul-11 — /EPR Retail News/ — Shop Direct, the UK’s second largest pure play online retailer, has recruited Groupon’s EMEA chief marketing officer and vice president to the new executive board level role of group strategy and customer director.

Sasha Berson will join Shop Direct in September, with a remit to turbocharge the company’s progress on its journey to become a world class digital retailer by releasing the full potential of its wealth of customer data.

Berson has more than 20 years’ professional experience, including senior leadership positions in data-driven marketing and strategy. During his time at Groupon, he established regional marketing strategies across more than 20 territories. Prior to that, he was at eBay, where he ran online and mobile marketing for eBay Europe and led marketing activities in the company’s expansion into Russia, China and Latin America. Earlier in his career, he worked at Bain & Company and Credit Suisse, and holds an MBA from Harvard.

Commenting on Berson’s appointment, CEO of Shop Direct, Alex Baldock, said:

“As the UK’s second largest pureplay online retailer, we hold a deep and rich set of data on our customers’ browsing and buying habits. When combined with the financial services data that comes from being one of the country’s biggest non-bank consumer lenders, we’re in a unique position to build the world’s most personalised shopping experience.

“Sasha’s arrival marks the next step forward for us in terms of understanding the power of our data and how we invest in it to drive commercial advantage and deliver an outstanding customer experience. It’s an important hire for us and I look forward to working with him.”

Sasha Berson said:

“I am delighted to be joining Shop Direct at such an exciting time in its development. The group is leading the industry in delivering an ever more personalised shopping experience to customers, and is well on its way to achieving its ambition of becoming a world class digital retailer. I’m looking forward to being part of its next chapter.”

As well as having a specific focus on the customer agenda, Berson will also take over deputy CEO Gareth Jones’s strategy remit when he arrives at Shop Direct in September. Jones will leave the business in December after seven years.

Commenting on Jones’s departure, Alex Baldock added:

“Gareth joined Shop Direct in 2009 and his leadership has played a big part in our success.

“He led the removal of the catalogue and migration of our legacy brands last year. He’s made huge strides with innovation, from our award-winning eCommerce test and learn experimentation programme and our mobile-first approach, right through to our groundbreaking personalisation journey. He’s championed our digital talent agenda and recruited some excellent people. And he’s taken on new challenges, including the launch of Very Exclusive, shaking up the industry to democratise luxury, and managing the move to Webhelp for our customer service centres.

“Gareth has certainly made a big impact here, and will leave big shoes to fill. When it comes time to say goodbye at the end of the year, I’ll gratefully wish him every future success.”

Gareth Jones said:

“During my time at Shop Direct, I’ve been lucky enough to work with some of the best people in retail and I’m extremely proud of the business we’ve built.

“After seven years with Shop Direct, now is the right time for me to explore other opportunities and do something different for me and my family. I look forward to watching the group’s future achievements and wish Alex and the team great success for the future.”
