PASAY CITY, PHILIPPINES, 2016-May-11 — /EPR Retail News/ — SM Foundation turned over its 74th school building donation to the San Francisco Elementary School in Tarlac on May 6 in partnership with SM Prime. The two-storey, four-classroom school building came fully furnished with 200 armchairs, 16 wall fans, eight blackboards, four teacher’s table and chair sets, four toilets and four wall clocks.

“We are truly grateful to SM Foundation for their generosity in sharing their blessings for the benefit of our school children,” School Principal Romeo Torno said. “The students will have a better environment for learning that will inspire them and even make them enjoy their studies. There is no way to fully express our gratitude. We at San Francisco Elementary School are indebted to SM for their generosity to our students.”

Torno added that the school building will be occupied by grade one and grade four students this upcoming school year.

The San Francisco Elementary School was established in 1950 to support the education of communities in Concepcion, Tarlac. Since 2013, the school has been implementing the Department of Education (DepEd)’s Special Science Elementary School Project which focuses on developing children who have keen interest and exceptional abilities in Science and Mathematics.

Parent Teacher Association President Almarissa Samaniada expressed her gratitude to SM Foundation. “Malaking tulong ang bagong school building sa pag-aaral ng mga bata upang maging mas maginhawa ang kanilang pag-aaral. Nawa’y lalo pang maging matagumpay ang SM Foundation upang mas marami pang mag-aaral ang inyong matulungan,” she added.

SM Foundation Executive Director for Education Linda Atayde said that the new school building is part of its support to DepEd’s initiatives in addressing the shortage in public school classrooms.

“With the donation of school buildings, SM Foundation has improved the quality of education by providing an environment conducive for learning that has increased student attendance, improvement in test scores as well as boost the morale of the teachers,” Atayde said.

Since 2002, SM Foundation has already built 74 school buildings with a total of 224 classrooms nationwide.

PHILIPPINES: SM Foundation renovated 14 health centers and conducted 114 medical missions nationwide In 2015

Pasay City, Philippines, 2016-Apr-09 — /EPR Retail News/ — In 2015, SM Foundation further strengthened its health programs by focusing on the needs of its host communities. During the year, SM Foundation renovated 14 health centers and conducted a total of 114 medical missions which benefited 90,932 patients nationwide.

SM Foundation extended its support to the health and medical needs of the military last year. An example of this is the renovated Philippine National Police Special Action Force (SAF) Training Batch Dispensary in Sta. Rosa, Laguna. The room-turned-health facility now serves the members of SAF, branch employees, their dependents, as well as the 471 SAF commando students who are currently undertaking their training in the center.

Aside from the renovated structure, SM Foundation donated brand new equipment such as oxygen tanks with regulators and carriage, nebulizers, stethoscopes, surgical sets, and sterilizers. SM Foundation also donated new beds and other furnishings for the additional comfort of its patients and staff.

Other health facilities completed by the Foundation in 2015 include the La Trinidad Main Health Center, Tuy Main Health Center, Indang Main Health Center, the Soldier’s ward at the Camp Aquino Station Hospital, the Pediatric ward at the Laguna Provincial Hospital, the Out-patient ward at the Philippine General Hospital, and the Pediatric ward at the Ospital ng Paranaque to name a few.

Through upgraded health centers, these facilities can now serve more patients and increase their scope in accommodating different kinds of health and medical needs.

From its inception up to the end of December 2015, SM Foundation’s medical program renovated a total of 115 health centers.

Also supporting its aim of providing free and accessible health services, SM Foundation conducts medical missions throughout the country especially in areas where medical care may be too scarce or expensive.

Especially in times of calamities, SM Foundation conducts medical missions in tandem with its immediate disaster response program. In the aftermath of 2015’s Typhoon Lando, SM Foundation rolled out 14 medical missions to affected communities in Pangasinan, Nueva Vizcaya, Pampanga, La Union and Tarlac. SM Foundation also continued its medical support for the survivors of Typhoon Yolanda by conducting 9 medical missions for Yolanda-survivors in Leyte, Samar and Cebu.

SM Foundation likewise strengthened its efforts in combating specific diseases. In August 2015, it conducted a joint medical mission with the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) at the Sisters of Mary Girlstown Campus in Silang, Cavite. Here, students received free medical services from SM Foundation and also underwent check-ups for possible cases of tuberculosis through the joint effort of PBSP and local government units.

2015 also marked another milestone for SM Foundation’s medical mission program as it welcomed its fourth mobile clinic. The new mobile clinic will increase the number of communities served by its medical missions nationwide.

As of end 2015, SM Foundation’s medical missions have conducted a total of 1,131 medical missions which benefited 840,313 patients since it started.

Another health and medical initiative of SM Foundation is its Oral Health Project in Nasugbu, Batangas. This project aims to create awareness among children in Kinder and Grade 1, as well as their families, on good oral health and hygiene. The project is slated to run for five years, and started with an initial batch of 109 students in 2012. Dental check-ups and awareness seminars for the community are done in tandem with SM Foundation’s quarterly medical missions in Nasugbu.

This project is in partnership with the UP Pahinungod Society which helps deploy dentists to conduct the oral examinations, preventive and restorative treatment, and health education to the children.

As of end 2015, SM Foundation supported 271 students, now attending Grade 2.

The SM group, through SM Foundation, also believes in extending its health and wellness initiatives to its employees through the SM Employee Blood Bank. Established in 2011 and in partnership with the Department of Health Philippine Blood Center (DOH-PBC) and the Philippine Red Cross (PRC), the project holds bloodletting activities across the SM group and its subsidiaries. Collections are shared among the two blood banks of DOH-PBC and PRC and are made available to SM employees and their immediate relatives, free of charge.

In 2015, SM Foundation was able to collect 321,300 ml of blood or 714 bags from successful SM employee-volunteers. SM Foundation also received its fourth Jose Rizal Award from the Department of Health for this project last year.

SM Foundation believes that in order to empower communities, quality health care must be in reach. Decades after its establishment, SM Foundation continues to create more opportunities for its health and wellness programs to widen its reach and support the growth of even more communities.

Philippines: SM Foundation helps provide healthy and sustainable food source for communities thru its Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan Farmers’ Training program

SM Foundation introduced urban farming in 2015

Pasay City, Philippines, 2016-Mar-25 — /EPR Retail News/ — Addressing the challenge of providing a healthy and sustainable food source for communities, SM Foundation continues to constantly improve and evolve its sustainable agriculture program Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan (KSK) Farmers’ Training.

As such, SM Foundation introduced its Urban Farming and Gardening Training course in 2015. Like the KSK program, it also aims to help promote food security as well as provide an extra form of livelihood for the participants but targets the marginalized sector in the urban setting.

Harbest Agribusiness, SM Foundation’s constant partner in its KSK programs, conducted the training. The project was envisioned to help teach the participants the concept of smart farming using the limited spaces or backyards of their households. The end objective was to bring nutritious food to every table of its participants.

Last year, SM Foundation’s last training of the year was held in Bagobantay, Quezon City, a short distance from SM North EDSA. The 12-week program taught the participants how to utilize space for backyard farming by using recycled containers as planting pots which can easily be replicated in their own backyards.

Crops that were grown during the training included lowland and upland vegetables and fruits such as bitter gourd, eggplant, green beans, lettuce, okra, radish,  squash, sweet potato, tomato, watermelons and melons, to name a few.

A total of 467 individuals from Manila; Bacoor, Cavite; and Quezon City completed the training last year.

SM Foundation also continued to conduct its regular KSK trainings, effectively rolling out 17 trainings nationwide. The 12-week program teaches participants new and doable agricultural technology and methods through modular lectures and hands-on training on high-value crops. It also ingrains into them the importance of providing healthy and safe food for their own table.

Aside from agriculture training conducted by Harbest Agribusiness, SM Foundation also partners with the Department of Social Welfare and Development which conducts values formation and entrepreneurship trainings for the farmer-participants.

Including its Urban Farming and Gardening Training, SM Foundation has conducted a total of 20 KSK trainings benefitting 2,670 farmers and interested participants for 2015.

SM Foundation capped off the year by ending 2015 with its 100th KSK training. By end of 2015, the program was able to train a total of 12,750 farmers from 2,123 barangays in 551 municipalities and cities from various locations throughout the country.

In a steady phase, SM Foundation continues to strengthen its initiatives to support its goal of enabling people to attain food security in the various communities it serves.

These students are part of SM Foundation’s most recent batch of scholar-graduates. Of the total of 264 graduates for school year 2014-2015, 62 of finished with latin honors and academic distinctions.

The college scholarship also welcomed its newest batch of SM scholars for school year 2015-2016, opening new doors and creating new opportunities for 267 public high school graduates. These students have now joined the program’s 1,500 current SM scholars and are now enrolled in SM Foundation’s 84 partner schools nationwide.

Aside from its college scholarship, SM Foundation also provides opportunities for technical-vocational education for qualified public high school graduates who would like to pursue higher education for a shorter period of study. The scholarship is offered to equip today’s youth the right skills and competencies to fulfil the needs of today’s competitive labor market.

Through its two partner schools—Punlaan School and Don Bosco Makati Technical Institution—SM Foundation offers technical-vocational courses such as Food and Beverage, Automobile Mechanic, Fitter Machinist, Electro-Mechanical Technician, and Refrigeration and Air-conditioning. A total of 148 technical-vocational scholars graduated last year from this program.

As of end 2015, SM Foundation has already supported a total of 2,627 students nationwide for both scholarships.

This new addition, donated by project partners SM Prime Holdings, Inc., SM Foundation and Deutsche Bank Ag Manila, created a better learning environment for the students by providing permanent rooms to 395 students, of which 15 are special education students.

SM Foundation also ensures that its donated school buildings are regularly maintained by repairing and renovating its school buildings after every five years. In 2015, SM Foundation repaired 6 school buildings.

By end of 2015, SM Foundation has already donated a total of 75 school buildings with 227 classrooms and repaired 24 school buildings with 58 classrooms since its school building program started.
