SONIC® Drive-In completes its ninth annual Limeades for Learning® fall voting campaign

2017 Limeades for Learning (Photo: Business Wire)

Donation impacts 58,080 students in 288 cities across the country

OKLAHOMA CITY, 2017-Oct-31 — /EPR Retail News/ — SONIC® Drive-In (NASDAQ: SONC), the nation’s largest chain of drive-in restaurants, completed its ninth annual Limeades for Learning® fall voting campaign on Sunday, Oct. 22. The campaign funded $1 million to 1,936 public school teacher projects over the four-week period. In partnership with DonorsChoose.org, this national award winning and consumer-driven cause campaign empowers guests to make a difference in public school classroom by allocating SONIC’s $1 million donation to teachers’ projects.

From Monday, Sept. 25 through Sunday, Oct. 22, SONIC guests and fans told SONIC where to place its $1 million donation by voting at LimeadesforLearning.com for projects they wanted funded through Limeades for Learning. Throughout the voting period, projects with the most votes each week received funding. This year, the campaign impacted 978 teachers across 288 cities including San Antonio, Texas., Memphis, Tenn., Oklahoma City, Okla., and Fayetteville, N.C.

“Science can already be a difficult subject for students to comprehend – but without helpful tools and resources to create a hands-on lesson, it can be even more frustrating for students,” said Caitlin Cleary, kindergarten teacher for Naples Elementary School in Naples, Utah. “This was my first year participating in Limeades for Learning and I can already see the results from my project, ‘The Science of Literacy’. With the new materials, my students are drawing a deeper understanding from our lessons and are transforming into literary scientists that can explore text in new ways.”

Following this year’s Limeades for Learning fall voting campaign, SONIC has funded a total of $9.5 million for 17,895 classroom projects, impacting more than 536,850 students in 1,701 cities since the campaign’s inception in 2009.

“Since 2009, our partnership with SONIC’s Limeades for Learning has helped fulfill thousands of teacher projects, and nine years later, it continues to have a big impact in America’s classrooms,” says Charles Best, founder of DonorsChoose.org. “Every year, SONIC has funded innovative projects that bring musical instruments, books, field trips, tablets and much more to public school students across the nation.”

Named after SONIC’s founder, induction into the Troy Smith Hall of Fame is SONIC’s most prestigious award, given to a franchisee who has worked with SONIC for a noteworthy duration and made a significant contribution in terms of leadership, growth, positive influence and brand image. This year, SONIC presented the Troy Smith Award to Joe Moore, SONIC franchise owner and leader of J-2 Enterprises.

“It is such an honor to receive this award that many of my fellow colleagues have received and who inspire me every day,” said Moore. “I am very proud to be a part of the SONIC family for the last 27 years, and I look forward to making my organization one that would make both my family and Troy Smith proud.”

“Joe is a well-respected franchisee in the SONIC community and is a source of great leadership and inspiration to his fellow franchisees, colleagues and partners,” said Clifford Hudson, chairman and chief executive officer of Sonic Corp. “Joe is known as Mr. Smalltown in the SONIC family due to his commitment to growing his franchise group differently by embracing smaller towns for his drive-ins. He captures the spirit of a Troy Smith Hall of Fame recipient and has contributed positive changes to the brand for many years. We appreciate everything he has done to make his business what it is today.”

Chain Leader Award: Gabe Pray

SONIC presented Gabe Pray, SONIC franchisee and leader of the Pray Group, with the SONIC Chain Leader Award. This award is given to an individual or group who has exerted both leadership and a positive influence on their organization and the SONIC brand. Based in Norman, Okla., Javed is one of Sonic Restaurant Inc.’s most valuable team members after serving SRI for 25 years. Javed proves that by building great people, you can build a strong business.

Briggs is the supervisor of eight drive‐ins in a developing Florida market and he uses SONIC’s values as a touchstone for creating a culture that focuses on superior operations. With a tremendous passion for the SONIC brand, Briggs keeps his drive-ins performing above the rest with increased sales over the last two years.

SONIC presented the Operational Excellence Award to Brian Markham, operating partner for the Cooper, Raynor, Young Group, and Stephanie Matthews, operating partner for the Cody Barnett Group. SONIC® Drive-In partners with Julianne Hough to launch #ThanksTeach social media campaign to celebrate Teacher Appreciation Month

America’s Drive-In to support local public school teachers and students with $15 million commitment over next five years

OKLAHOMA CITY, 2016-May-04 — /EPR Retail News/ — Today (May 3, 2016), SONIC® Drive-In (NASDAQ: SONC), the nation’s largest chain of drive-in restaurants, announced its partnership with Julianne Hough to launch #ThanksTeach, a social media campaign to celebrate Teacher Appreciation Month and give public school teachers across America the thanks they deserve. During the month long campaign, SONIC will make donations to public school teacher projects for every post, share and retweet incorporating #ThanksTeach, for a total donation of up to $1 million.

A long time supporter of public schools, teachers and their students, SONIC Drive-In announced it will significantly increase its contribution to its Limeades for Learning program, committing $15 million over the next five years. In partnership with DonorsChoose.org, the national award-winning cause marketing campaign funds essential learning materials and innovative teaching resources requested by teachers that instill a thirst for knowledge and inspire creative thinking in their students. This new commitment more than triples the brand’s previous Limeades for Learning support to schools, having donated more than $5 million over the past seven years to 10,000 teacher projects and impacting 283,490 students in 993 cities across the U.S. during that timeframe.

“Teachers see promise in their students that they can’t yet see in themselves. Nearly 50 years ago, Mrs. Pat Watson saw leadership potential in me when I was in junior high school that was further nurtured by high school teachers that set me on a course to grow into the leader that I am today,” said Cliff Hudson, Sonic Corp. CEO. “Today, we launch a new commitment to donate $15 million over the next five years to public school teachers and their students.”

SONIC has supported teachers and schools through Limeades for Learning since 2009, and with Julianne’s help, we invite our fans and guests to join us in the #ThanksTeach campaign by sharing stories about their teachers or teachers in their lives during Teacher Appreciation Month. Together, we will celebrate teachers who made a difference to us and teachers making a difference every day in their classrooms.”

For the entire month of May, SONIC guests and fans can make a difference in local communities by simply joining in the conversation online, celebrating teachers that have made a difference in their lives by using #ThanksTeach on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram. For every post or share incorporating the hashtag, SONIC will donate funds towards teacher projects, up to $1 million.

“The average teacher spends $500 per year out of their own pockets to provide supplies for their students. When I heard about the #ThanksTeach campaign SONIC was launching through its Limeades for Learning program, I was thrilled at the opportunity to help show teachers our appreciation for everything they do,” said Hough. “With your help we can make this Teacher Appreciation Month particularly special by bringing $1 million in meaningful supplies to local classrooms across the country. A simple tweet or post can make a real difference for schools in your community.”

To kick off the #ThanksTeach campaign, Hough worked with Limeades for Learning to fund $100,000 worth of classroom projects to support teachers and students in the Salt Lake City area, where she attended Alta High School.

To learn more about #ThanksTeach and Limeades for Learning, visit LimeadesforLearning.com and explore local teacher projects that may be funded as a result of the campaign. Teachers interested in getting involved in Limeades for Learning and submitting a project for potential funding can register at the website as well.

SONIC® Drive-In to create the SONIC Square Shake inspired by SONIC’s new line of Creamery Shakes designed for Instagram

America’s Drive-In creates #SquareShakes, inspired by new Creamery Shake line and perfect for photographing and sharing on Instagram

OKLAHOMA CITY, 2016-Apr-07 — /EPR Retail News/ — In a first-of-its-kind partnership, SONIC® Drive-In (NASDAQ: SONC) is collaborating with Instagram celebrity chef, @ChefJacquesLaMerde, and a group of renowned Instagram design influencers to create the SONIC Square Shake inspired by SONIC’s new line of Creamery Shakes. The Square Shake is made for Instagram, designed by Instagram influencers and only available for order through Instagram.

The SONIC Square Shake will be entirely square, perfect for photographing and sharing, complete with a square cup and a square straw. To top things off, the Shakes will be served on a square tray featuring square versions of the inventive and opulent Creamery Shake ingredients, highlighting the brand’s newest shake addition to its frozen beverage lineup.

Inspired by SONIC’s new Creamery Shakes line, flavor profiles such as Vanilla Bean, Buttered Toffee, Dark Chocolate, Bourbon Brown Sugar,Dulce De Leche and Wildberry & Lavender will be available exclusively through “Shop Now” sponsored ads on Instagram to Coachella festival goers at the Base Camp festival grounds only on April 16. Through Instagram’s “Shop Now” geo-targeted sponsored ads, attendees will be able to order the shakes and sample them on the spot – a first-of-its-kind program for Instagram. Samplers are then encouraged to share their Square Shakes on Instagram with the hashtag #SquareShake, thus completing the Insta-circle.

“We’ve refocused our visual strategy and presence on Instagram, transforming popular SONIC menu items into digital artwork, which has resonated with our followers and resulted in enormous engagement,” said Todd Smith, president and chief marketing officer for SONIC. “We’ve seen a 72 percent growth in Instagram since last September, and partnering with the social platform and @ChefJacquesLaMerde to develop the world’s first shake designed for Instagram is another innovative step forward in our social presence and strategy.”

The SONIC Square Shake is the brainchild of SONIC’s advertising agency, Goodby Silverstein & Partners, and will be a meta-homage to the platform that launched #beautiful food imagery into the mainstream, with more than 56 million photos tagged with the topical hashtag and more than 178 million tagged #food. To play with this cultural phenomenon, SONIC brought in @ChefJacquesLaMerde, aka Christine Flynn, Executive Chef at Toronto’s IQ Food Co., a well-known food Instagrammer who pokes fun at fine dining by styling and photographing approachable foods in sophisticated ways, to re-create and design SONIC’s new Creamery Shakes into the one-of-a-kind Square Shakes. To further enhance these creations, SONIC recruited a select group of Instagram graphic design influencers @DSchwen, @TimothyGoodman, @VelvetSpectrum, @VPavlovVisuals, @WillBryantPLZ, @MikeyBurton and @JoshuaNom to create colorful backdrops inspired by the unique ingredients and used for all campaign photography.

“People are obsessed with capturing the world on Instagram so we thought ‘What if we manipulated the real world to fit on Instagram?’ instead,” said Margaret Johnson, ECD & Partner, Goodby Silverstein & Partners, SONIC’s creative agency. “We are excited to partner with @ChefJacquesLaMerde, who is famous for turning simple ingredients into works of art on Instagram every day.”

For those unable to attend the festival and try a Square Shake first hand, SONIC’s famous Shakes – including the new line of Creamery Shakes – are available for half-price after 8 p.m. now and all summer long.
