SPAR Austria introduces range of Rainbow Juices

Austria, 2017-Sep-08 — /EPR Retail News/ — Exotic fruits from countries in Asia, as well as Central & South America are the main ingredients of SPAR Austria’s range of Rainbow Juices. The six colourful fruit and vegetable drinks made from Acerola cherries, wheatgrass, green cabbage, turmeric, ginger, raspberry, coconut, cranberry and Goji berries are now available in all SPAR, EUROSPAR and INTERSPAR stores across the country.

The new SPAR enjoy Rainbow Range Juices are based on apple or orange juice and come in six colours. The Green Juice contains a mixture of wheatgrass and green cabbage; the Purple Juice has an exotic blend of berries; the Kurkuma Juice combines carrot, ginger and turmeric; the Red Juice contains raspberries and cranberries; the Yellow Juice with red Goji berries and golden-yellow Inca berries (Physalis) has a sweet-sour taste; and the pure coconut water completes the range.

Superfruits and superfoods are becoming increasingly popular and SPAR Austria is tapping into this trend with its new juice range, using products such as the Acerola cherry, which contains approximately 40% more Vitamin C than an orange – making it one of the most vitamin C rich fruits in the world.

High pressure procedures for 100% taste

The new SPAR enjoy Rainbow Range Juices are produced using the High Pressure Process (HPP) – a method that ensures the gentle preservation of vitamins, nutrients and natural fruit flavours.

SPAR Austria teams up with Salzburg Technical College students to develop an energy self-sufficient supermarket

Austria, 2017-Mar-06 — /EPR Retail News/ — SPAR Austria is working with students from the Salzburg Technical College to develop an energy self-sufficient supermarket of the future.

The work is being done as part of the College’s Smart Building study programme and SPAR Austria has provided energy data and retail planning knowledge from its existing EUROSPAR store in Straßwalchen.

During a visit to the store, the students learnt about the building’s existing technologies and energy systems. This experience was factored into their project plans for the supermarket of the future. “Real life projects are an essential part of the education process,” said Thomas Reiter, Head of the study programme. “The cooperation with SPAR has been an extremely valuable experience for our students.”

The winning project

After five months, the students had the chance to present their ideas with one project being awarded first prize. In their supermarket of the future plan, the two winners, Nadine Huber and Alexander Seiwald, trialled adapting the store to the natural environment with the facade of the building being made from re-usable parts.

Their concept uses solar energy, specifically Rawlemon solar crystal balls, to generate the energy needed for the store. The crystal balls are integrated into the facade of the building and the energy generated is used for the store’s lighting, heating, ovens and refrigeration systems.

New stores based on fresh ideas

Every year, SPAR launches or renovates around 100 stores throughout Austria. Each store is built according to the SPAR Austria Construction Manual Guidelines, which were certified by the Austrian Association for Sustainable Real Estate Industry (ÖGNI). This means that every newly developed or modernised SPAR store receives the ÖGNI Gold Certificate and features environmentally friendly architecture, modern heating and cooling technology and LED lighting. Compared with conventional stores, these new buildings save approximately 50% of energy and partly produce electricity themselves through solar powered systems.

“For many years now, we have used a comprehensive sustainability concept for the construction and conversion of our stores,” said Gerald Geiger, Head of Construction, Energy and Technology of SPAR Austria. “We are always looking for fresh ideas to improve our stores and thanks to our cooperation with the Salzburg Technical College, we are achieving this goal. We have seen many interesting and exciting projects that are sustainable and feasible in practice.”

SPAR Austria starts selling its organic Frutura Thermal vegetables in stores

Amsterdam, 2016-Jul-23 — /EPR Retail News/ — Just nine weeks after planting the first crops, SPAR Austria has started selling its juicy, organic Frutura Thermal vegetables in stores around the country. About 50,000 kg of organic tomatoes have been harvested and the organic Ramiro pepper mix will soon be ripe and ready to pack into SPAR Natur*pur bags to be sold in all SPAR, EUROSPAR and INTERSPAR stores in Austria.

The vegetables, grown in an environmentally friendly way in Bad Blumau in Styria, help reduce imports – saving unnecessary transport costs and contributing to reduced CO2 emissions.

The short delivery routes also ensure that the vegetables are bursting with flavour upon arrival in SPAR stores:

“Austrian vegetables are full flavour throughout the year, even in the colder months – this is what our customers ask for. The fact that the products are grown locally, in an environmentally friendly way, is the icing on the cake. SPAR Austria opens new state-of-the-art logistics centre in Ebergassing, Austria

The existing SPAR warehouse located in the town of St. Polten had become too small to efficiently supply the growing number of SPAR stores in Vienna. Recognizing that this would only become more difficult over time, SPAR Austria invested in a new state-of-the-art logistics centre in the area of Ebergassing (Lower Austria) in co-operation with the Austrian logistics supplier Knapp.

Vienna, Austria, 2016-Jul-15 — /EPR Retail News/ — The construction of the most modern logistics centre in Europe took two years to realize and an investment of €85 million. On 11 June 2016, the official opening of the new distribution centre was celebrated in the presence of Federal Minister Dr. Hans Jörg Schelling and 500 guests. The population of Ebergassing and surroundings will be invited to visit the centre in spring 2017, when it will be fully operational. This investment has resulted in the creation of 150 new jobs in the area.

SPAR Austria Board Member, Friedrich Poppmeier, who is in charge of logistics, explains the objectives behind the new centre: “To achieve local supply at the highest level, perfect processes have to be applied. SPAR is a leader in innovation and has always invested in new technologies in the area of logistics. Innovation supporting the security of supply and the support of our SPAR retailers in their day-to-day work is an ongoing investment within SPAR Austria. The SPAR logistics centre Ebergassing has become a model operation!”

Unique worldwide innovations
The new facility is currently one of the most innovative and sustainable logistics centres in the world. Some of the technologies which have been incorporated are being used for the first time. They were developed in co-operation with logistics supplier Knapp.

Gerald Hofer, CEO of Knapp AG, explains: “Based on SPAR’s industry knowledge and Knapp’s technology know-how, we jointly developed a completely new picking method, improving management of peaks, the reduction of investment and offering employees an ergonomic working environment. We are particularly proud of specially developed workplaces and the initial use of ‘swarm intelligence’ in the form of freely navigating shuttles. This innovation will set new standards worldwide and create jobs in Austria.”

Sustainability & Social Responsibility
Right at the start of construction in May 2015, it was clear that this logistics centre is a great example of the inclusion of many elements focused on sustainability. The centre has already been pre-certified with the ÖGNI certificate in platinum by the Austrian Society for Sustainable Real Estate (ÖGNI). The official ceremony recognizing this achievement will take place in the autumn of 2016.
