SPAR India opens its sixth hypermarket in Bangalore, its 19th overall in the country

India, 2018-Jan-30 — /EPR Retail News/ — SPAR India has launched its sixth store in Bangalore, its 19th overall in the country. The new SPAR Hypermarket offers customers an innovative shopping experience at the Vega City Mall in the south of the city. The store spans 5,100 m² and has over 50,000 products with 25 checkout counters.

Commenting on the launch, Mr Rajeev Krishnan, SPAR India Managing Director & CEO, said: “At SPAR, our aim is to enrich the shopping experience of our customers. The new SPAR store at Vega City Mall is a big step in this journey. It has been designed to offer value in an engaging and interactive environment. We have used technology and product in new ways to deliver a truly amazing experience. We are on an incredible journey which started in Bangalore 10 years ago and we never cease to be delighted by the love and affection of the city. As we open our 19thstore here, we would like to thank our customers and partners for their support in making this store a reality.”

A highly targeted digital campaign was launched on 7 January for Bangalore residents with the prime objective of creating awareness and excitement about the new store launch. The highlight of this campaign was an integrated online-offline idea – LOOTMAAR – an opportunity to do a 60 second shopping dash in the new SPAR Vega City store. The participants were asked to take part in a game where they had to choose the right route to reach a shopping cart, tag three friends who are in Bangalore and tell us why they should be chosen as SPAR’s no. 1 “lootmaar”. From the entries on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, five lucky winners were chosen to take part in the shopping dash on 13 January.

Another positive event for SPAR India recently was its hashtag trending campaign, #SPARVegaCity, which ranked second overall on Twitter in India. Twitter users discussed the various features of the new store and showed appreciation for the fact that SPAR has opened in this new location. The campaign gained more reach through coverage by some well known bloggers and Facebook communities.

SPAR seeks to deliver on its four core pillars of Freshness, Choice, Value and Service. The new store at Vega City Mall fulfils all of these principles with the addition of new categories such as the Wonder Years entertainment section for kids, a new Beauty department, Grandma’s Corner with products that remind one of their childhood, Taste of India, Taste the World, SPAR Natural and more.

The store also makes use of innovative technologies such as self-assist kiosks to help customers navigate the store and an interactive digital SPAR Studio, which gives customers a 3D experience of products they wish to purchase before making their final choice.

The technology team has also improved the back-end efficiency for faster billing and self checkout counters have been installed to save customers time. As an added convenience feature, home-delivery is offered through SPAR India’s omni-channel service, allowing customers to shop online.

As a commitment to the community, all staff members have been hired locally.

SPAR India launches online campaign #SayYesToMillets

India, 2017-Dec-13 — /EPR Retail News/ — Once a staple food source in India, Millets have fallen out of fashion over the last few decades – replaced by rice and wheat. Now, with the increase in diabetes and allergies such as gluten intolerance, this group of small seed grasses that have been widely cultivated as cereal crops, are making a comeback.

Realising the potential of the hardy, ancient millet seeds, SPAR India introduced a 25 day-long campaign in all SPAR Supermarkets in the country to create awareness about the health benefits and nutritional excellence of millets. In each store, a special zone was set up highlighting the entire millet range available. Nutritional information and delicious recipes were also displayed.

Some 500 school children from all over the country visited the millet zones in the SPAR stores and were informed about why the grains should be part of their diets. In addition to the millet zones instore, SPAR India executed the online campaign #SayYesToMillets, regularly posting nutritional facts, recipes and health benefits of millets on its various social media platforms.

To promote local farmers, the SPAR Natural range offered instore features a variety of products containing locally grown grains. These include savoury, sweet and ready-to-cook SPAR Own Brand products like Dosa mix and Millet-based health drinks.

Millets are a smart way of farming and eating. They can grow on marginal land and under harsh weather conditions. They are rich in nutrients, minerals, and fibre and can reduce the risks of heart diseases and obesity. Millets are also an affordable alternative to trendy, more expensive ‘superfoods’ and SPAR India is delighted to once again be promoting this ancient group of grains.

SPAR Poland launches new mobile app

Poland, 2017-Dec-06 — /EPR Retail News/ — SPAR Poland has launched a new mobile app for both Apple and Android devices, providing customers with an additional sales and communication channel.

The app’s slogan, “My App, my SPAR”, is a play on SPAR Poland’s new brand proposition, announced in October called, “My Neighbourhood, my SPAR”.

The application makes shopping in SPAR stores even easier. A few taps on one’s mobile phone creates a customised shopping list, which customers can share via e-mail, text or instant messaging. It also gives customers access to current promotions, helping them find the best prices for their favourite products.

Another feature of the app is SPAR Poland’s quarterly Ze smakiem (With taste) brochure, which up until now has only been available on the company website and as a print version in SPAR stores.

Additionally, as the app works with Google Maps, customers can more easily find the most efficient route to their nearest SPAR store and check opening hours. Further development of the app will include the addition of new tools such as push notifications and bar code scanning.

SPAR Austria introducES new organic SPAR enjoy ice tea range

Austria, 2017-Dec-01 — /EPR Retail News/ — After the successful launch of the SPAR enjoy super fruit juice range earlier this year, SPAR Austria has tapped into another beverage trend with the introduction of its new organic SPAR enjoy ice tea range, which comes in various delicious flavour combinations: Turmeric & Ginger, Rooibos & Herbs and Barley & Spearmint. The range is now available in all SPAR, EUROSPAR and INTERSPAR stores across the country.

The ice tea is produced in a small tea factory in Upper Austria, where great attention is given to the quality of ingredients. The 100% carefully selected and harvested organic and Fairtrade herbs and spices include South African rooibos tea, regionally produced herbs, Austrian-grown barley and exotic mint. The unique combination of flavours give SPAR enjoy organic ice tea an incomparably refreshing and delicious taste.

The ice tea range contains only 5.5 grams of organic cane sugar per 100ml. This once again underlines SPAR’s efforts to reduce sugar in its own brand products. Less sugar not only means fewer calories, it also means that one gets a better appreciation of the natural ingredients used.

SPAR Austria’s new ice tea range doesn’t just impress through its unique taste, but also through its environmentally friendly packaging – coming in 330ml glass bottles, which are re-sealable and re-usable.

SPAR Netherlands opens a SPAR City store and two new SPAR Express stores

Netherlands, 2017-Nov-29 — /EPR Retail News/ — SPAR Netherlands recently opened three new stores of two different formats — a SPAR City store and two new SPAR Express stores — one of which is the first SPAR Express store to open along a highway.

Rollout of SPAR Express stores

The two new SPAR Express stores, one in Tilburg and the other in Heemskerk, were opened at the beginning of November and bring a new convenience offering to these two Dutch towns located in the South and North of the country respectively.

The SPAR Express format was introduced to the Netherlands at the beginning of 2017 in partnership with the EG Group, the operating company of Texaco service stations. After three successful pilots on non highway locations, two other SPAR convenience stores have been added. These two stores are high traffic locations and Heemskerk is the first one to open along a main highway.

The product range at both stores focuses on grab-and-go items complemented by sandwiches, meals, salads and soups for take-away. The instore offering was decided on based on learnings from other SPAR countries where the format has been a great success.

Second SPAR City store in Breda

After the successful launch of the first SPAR City store in Breda in August 2016, a second store has now opened. SPAR City stores offer an extensive range of fresh and convenience products including freshly prepared baguettes, sandwiches, fruit salads, croissants, fresh juices and coffee – all available for eating in or taking away. The shop in Breda also boasts an extensive selection of meal deals for a quick breakfast, healthy lunch or easy dinner.

SPAR sees room for more than 100 SPAR City stores in the Netherlands. The first City store was opened in October 2010 in Rotterdam and it’s anticipated that by the end of 2017, the milestone of 50 SPAR City stores will be reached.

SPAR Hungary partner wins numerous industry-recognised awards

Hungary, 2017-Nov-29 — /EPR Retail News/ — SPAR Hungary continues to invest in different areas of the business, from launching new product ranges to rolling out new stores. Here we take a look at a few recent initiatives that are helping to grow the brand and that have led to the partner winning a number of industry-recognised awards.

Five year anniversary SPAR Partner License Programme

SPAR Hungary first launched the SPAR partner format in 2012. Today, a total of 133 SPAR license stores are operated throughout the country, providing employment to almost 1,500 people. The annual turnover of SPAR license stores amounts to over HUF 32 billion (just over €100 million). SPAR Hungary has an agreement with 109 SPAR retailers throughout the country and continues to welcome new independent retailers to the network.

New SPAR plant in Üllő

Construction is underway of a new plant for the preparation of mayonnaise, salads and sandwiches on the site of the existing SPAR logistics centre in the town of Üllő in central Hungary. The investment of more than HUF 1.2 billion (€3.8 million) includes HUF 250 million (€800.000) spent on technology and equipment. The facility will feature two packaging lines and complies with the highest level of food safety standards. It is the company’s short-term aim to supply quality products made in Üllő to all SPAR, INTERSPAR and SPAR Partner license stores in Hungary.

New vegan products launched

SPAR Hungary has expanded its range of plant-based products under the popular Veganz brand. The selection of more than 60 different products includes delicacies found in dedicated SPAR stores such as organic vegetable milk, natural sweeteners, seed creams, high-concentration protein powders and various confectionery and biscuit items.

SPAR Hungary celebrates an array of awards

The ongoing investments being made by SPAR Hungary are paying off with the partner winning numerous awards, reflecting recognition from the industry and customers.

Most recently, SPAR Hungary received awards at three professional competitions one of which was the Superbrands title, which it took home for the ninth time. The Superbrands programme is one of the most important international brand evaluation awards and is currently carried out in 90 countries. The competition puts the focus on customer feedback. After professional and financial screening of brands and evaluation by the expert panel of judges, an additional online brand recognition and popularity survey is conducted by a Market Research Institute. The award gives positive feedback on the brand, highlighting the best based on professional considerations.

SPAR Hungary also received prestigious acknowledgement at the SuperStore competitionorganised by Trade magazine and Trade Marketing Club, in which the Érd INTERSPAR store was ranked first in the hypermarket category. The Érd Hypermarket also came in second at Mastercard’s ‘Retailer of the Year’ competition, in the category Best customer experience.

“These awards mean huge recognition and confirmation for us, meaning that our efforts and investments for providing top quality services to our customers have paid off. During the last years, we carried out numerous investments enabling our customers to visit modern stores every day. This year, we will invest more than HUF 23 billion (€73 million) in the development of our retail chain,” said Márk Maczelka, Head of Communications at SPAR Hungary.

SPAR India supports local farming community school in Soppahalli village, near Bangalore

India, 2017-Nov-27 — /EPR Retail News/ — Community involvement is a key aspect of SPAR’s vision and in India, SPAR has been taking steps to positively impact the lives of employees, customers and other members of the communities it serves. Recently, this led to an opportunity to support a local farming community school in Soppahalli village, near Bangalore.

SPAR India sources most of its fresh fruits & vegetables from the farmers of Soppahalli village, so when the team learnt that the village’s only school was in need of support, they decided to step in.

The school was closed for about six years and was reopened in 2017. At present, there are 16 students and only one teacher and like many schools in rural India, it lacks basic infrastructure.

A team of 20 SPAR India colleagues visited Soppahalli in October – interacting with the villagers and spending time with the school children. The team distributed notebooks and stationery among the students and also donated desks and benches to promote a better educational environment.

During the visit, the mood in the village was upbeat and the students were excited with the new additions to their school: “I like my new notebook and pencils,” said one student, while another added that not having to sit on the ground was a relief.

This was the first of many activities that SPAR India has planned for Soppahalli’s primary school and the village as a whole. The response has been overwhelming and has encouraged SPAR India to carry on adding value to the communities in which it operates with greater enthusiasm.

SPAR Zimbabwe highlights its recent charitable initiatives

Zimbabwe, 2017-Nov-22 — /EPR Retail News/ — SPAR Zimbabwe is actively involved in supporting charitable initiatives and is working hard to make a real difference to the communities in which it operates. Here we highlight some recent initiatives.

Community garden project

SPAR Kadoma has been very busy this year, with several exciting community development projects underway. Most recently, the team have been reaping the rewards of many months hard work and dedication at the Jairos Jiri school for the visually impaired. SPAR Kadoma helped the school establish a vegetable garden, which is now big enough not only to help feed the children, but also for them to supply SPAR with a few lines of vegetables a week, bringing in a bit of extra income with which they can purchase other food.

The children have been taught how to tend to the vegetables and it has even become part of the school curriculum. What a great community development success story, proving once again, that we are all better together.

Community clean ups

A year-long community clean-up campaign has been initiated and under the guidance of the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) and the City of Harare, one SPAR store a week is holding a clean-up in their area, encouraging members of the community and surrounding businesses to get involved. All SPAR staff are encouraged to participate – making for a rewarding, team-building experience.

There is an ongoing competition between the stores to see who can collect the most bags full of rubbish. So far, SPAR Braeside is in the lead with an astonishing 108 bags collected in just over 2 hours!

Charitable SPAR-sponsored events

Two charitable sporting events took place recently: The SPAR Gokwe Rainbow Run and the annual BONSA SPAR Cancer Fun Walk.

The Rainbow run attracted a huge crowd of runners and walkers, all eager to enter into the community spirit and raise money for charity. Over 600 people registered and everyone had a lot of fun in the sun. A grand total of $1,500 was raised which went towards groceries for flood victims, orphans and the elderly.

The 5th Annual BONSA SPAR Cancer Fun Walk took to the streets of Bulawayo recently. A total of 2,379 registered community members took part in this epic event to raise funds for those living with cancer and Palliative Care. A total of $12,000.00 was raised and was split equally between three local recipients: Bulawayo Island Hospice, The Cancer Association and The Fighting Back Fundraiser.

SPAR South Africa holds KwaZulu Natal Junior Chef competition

South Africa, 2017-Nov-17 — /EPR Retail News/ — Six young aspirant chefs took to their cooking stations recently in this year’s finals of the SPAR South Africa KwaZulu Natal Junior Chef competition.

The young primary school finalists battled it out for the first-place spot with twelve year old, Ryleigh Rutherford, taking home the honours with a delectable and flawless cheese cake. Twelve year old, Tiana Gangaram, was runner up with a superb tuna tart, which completely converted one non-fish eating judge.

The annual cook-off held in KwaZulu Natal saw the youngsters preparing a recipe that they had submitted as their competition entry, as well as a mystery dish – gingerbread men.

One of the judges, SPAR KwaZulu Natal Advertising and Promotions Manager, Nelene Rampersad who was instrumental in conceptualising the competition for SPAR in an effort to encourage young chefs, said: “I love that this year we had such a range of dishes from the finalists. This made judging difficult, and our taste-buds were put to the test, but after much deliberation, Ryleigh’s Cheese Cake came out tops. It was faultless – a great presentation, and top-class texture and flavour. Her gingerbread men were done to perfection with a crisp texture, with some fun iced decorations. Well done to all for the good food, great spirit and enthusiasm.”

Ryleigh won a R5,000 shopping voucher for her first-place position with runner up, Tiana receiving a R2,000 shopping voucher and all four remaining finalists each received a R500 SPAR shopping voucher. All finalists received a SPAR sweet hamper and a hamper packed with baking utensils to further their culinary aspirations.

“It was really fun,” said Ryleigh, who has always helped her mom in the kitchen ever since she can remember. “I enjoyed making my cheese cake here today. It was so exciting to work in a professional kitchen.”

Slovenia, 2017-Nov-15 — /EPR Retail News/ — SPAR Slovenia has been the sponsor of the national basketball team for 17 years and this year’s sponsorship was extra special with the team being crowned European Champions at the EuroBasket finals in Istanbul.

There were more than 7,000 Slovenians in the stands to support their team and watch them beat rivals, Serbia, 93:85. This was the biggest win in the history of Slovenian sport and it triggered a wave of euphoria amongst Slovenian sports fans.

Along with it being an historical sporting win for the small country of Slovenia, the event itself was also historical in terms of television viewership as the final was the most-watched sports programme in the history of Slovenian television. In addition to this, the medal ceremony was the most-watched of all TV broadcasts in Slovenia since the introduction of ratings. With the SPAR Brand visible on all player shirts, the awareness that this kind of viewership generated is immense.

Following the win in Turkey, 20,000 Slovenians flocked to the Congress square in the country’s capital, Ljubljana, to welcome home their champions, crying out the popular chant: “He who isn’t jumping, isn’t Slovenian!”

Showing its commitment to employee development, SPAR Austria recently invested around €10 million in the expansion and modernisation of the academy.

The new facilities offer high-tech materials and new methods of training in a large area of 1,800m². Professional teachers and training experts have been employed to impart knowledge on the trainees, laying the foundation for future careers within SPAR. “Through the modernisation of the building, the SPAR Academy in Vienna has become a learning and competence centre for the training of the next SPAR generation. This is another important milestone for us at SPAR,” said SPAR Austria CEO, Fritz Poppmeier, at the re-opening of the academy.

The large auditorium is the centre piece of the new academy. It will be used as a popular meeting place and a communication and break room during school hours, but will also serve as a venue for SPAR meetings in the future. The conference rooms, with media technology and video conferencing systems, will serve not only the school’s training purposes but will also be used by employees of SPAR Austria. Another highlight of the school is the space allocated for practical work – rooms where students can complete video training and have the opportunity to taste and prepare food. “With smart boards in all six educational rooms, a digital education concept and e-mail accounts for all trainees to give them access to all learning platforms at any time, the SPAR Academy is the vocational school of the future,” concludes Robert Renz, Director of the academy.

In addition to the Viennese state curriculum, the SPAR Academy in Vienna offers numerous extra trainings such as music workshops with members of the Philharmonic Orchestra, styling workshops and training on meat and cheese products, to mention just a few. Another unique feature is the subject of cultural integration, with a strong focus placed on cross-cultural education. The goal is to provide students with a well-rounded, in-depth knowledge of the food trade through these additional training courses.

Sustainability is a top priority at the SPAR Academy in Vienna. With the training of Fairtrade ambassadors and ‘Green Champions’, apprentices are provided with everything they need to know about environmental-friendly and sustainable retailing practices. “In cooperation with WWF and the Ministry of Environment, we offer additional training in the third year, during which our apprentices are trained to become Green Champions,” explained Robert Renz. “Sustainability is not just anchored in the syllabus, it is also physically seen in our operations, for example on the roof of the school, where solar panels have been installed.”

With 2,700 trainees for 20 professions, SPAR is the largest private training organisation in Austria. The SPAR Academy in Vienna is a recognised training institution with a formal curriculum. Currently, about 300 trainees from 34 nations and ethnic groups, speaking 29 different languages and belonging to 13 religious communities, are following training at the SPAR Academy Vienna.

SPAR Poland re-launches its SPAR Express store in Krakow

Poland, 2017-Nov-04 — /EPR Retail News/ — SPAR Poland has re-launched its SPAR Express store in Krakow, located next to the famous Wawel Castle, introducing a new convenience model to the market. The store meets the easy shopping standards and flexibility demanded by city centre locations. SPAR Poland aims to increase the number of SPAR Express stores located in city centres through its multi-format offer – providing greater convenience to busy customers.

The new SPAR Express store is located in a popular tourist destination. SPAR Poland addresses the needs of international tourists by using both Polish and English names for category communication. The product range is strongly focused on fresh and Food-to-Go, dedicated mostly to customers looking for convenient, ready-meal solutions. The store offers a wide choice of sandwiches, wraps, salads and fresh juice. A strong emphasis was placed on high quality coffee with Costa coffee being offered instore, accompanied by a selection of muffins, donuts and croissants.

The operating costs of the store were carefully considered. For example, the product range was selected to match the requirements of a convenience store aimed at meeting varied customer needs. A convenient location, quick shopping layout, price and quality ratio, as well as a healthy product offering, were all factors given a lot of attention in light of today’s customer demands.

SPAR Poland plans to roll out this concept to other city centre locations, after making any adjustments necessary based on the outcome of the pilot and adaptations required for each location. Being able to offer this alternative concept will attract new independent retailers.

SPAR UK Partner, A.F. Blakemore celebrates 100 years of business with new initiatives

SPAR UK Partner, A.F. Blakemore celebrates 100 years of business with new initiatives

United Kingdom, 2017-Oct-20 — /EPR Retail News/ — SPAR Partner, A.F. Blakemore, is celebrating 100 years of business and has undertaken a number of new initiatives that add value to the local communities it serves.

Installation of defibrillators

The partner has purchased 10 Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) to be installed at seven main sites including head office and distribution centres, reflecting their commitment to creating a good working environment for employees.

At each of the seven sites, the defibrillators will be located on the wall in lockable boxes. In the case of an emergency, the code for the box can be retrieved by calling 999. No training is required to use a defibrillator and applying it to someone who does not need it will not cause harm.

The company’s Group Health & Safety department will be promoting awareness amongst colleagues along with the support of Duncan Parsonage of Abacus Training – a state-registered paramedic with a mission to ensure timely public accessibility to defibrillators in emergencies.

Group Board Director, Tom Blakemore, said: “As a large family business we have a responsibility to provide access to the most up-to-date life-saving equipment should an emergency ever arise. A defibrillator is an essential step in the chain of survival when dealing with sudden cardiac arrest, and by making plans to install 10 at our larger sites across the business with higher footfall, we have made sure that staff and visitors to the buildings receive the best possible chance.”

Celebrating 100 years with ‘100’ challenges

As part of A.F. Blakemore & Son’s centenary celebrations, a number of Blakemore colleagues have raised more than £5,000 by taking part in a series of unusual and challenging ‘100’ themed fundraising activities.

Colleagues set individual and group challenges with a centenary theme to raise money for various charities of their choice, including the Alzheimer’s Society, the Midlands Air Ambulance Charity, and Bloodwise, a leukaemia and lymphoma research charity, to name just a few.

Some challenges were personal goals, with several colleagues aiming to lose weight by the 100thyear anniversary, while others organised 100-mile walks and bike rides.

SPAR Slovenia announces the winner of its Start It Up, Slovenia! Project

SPAR Slovenia announces the winner of its Start It Up, Slovenia! Project

Slovenia, 2017-Oct-20 — /EPR Retail News/ — Twelve ideas, twelve products, one winner. SPAR Slovenia together with the Formitas Agency and POPTV broadcasting company, entered into an innovative seven-month partnership to give young Slovenian entrepreneurs the chance of an exclusive business opportunity with the possibility of winning a long-term contract with SPAR.

The concept

With the possibility to enter open to anyone, many applications were received from which 12 start-ups were chosen and given the opportunity to win the title Hit product 2016. POP TV, the most popular TV channel of the country, aired 10 innovative one-hour shows between September and December 2016, featuring the products which kicked off the race and revealing the touching personal stories behind the creations.

Instore, digitally equipped shelves were used to interactively present the stories of the products and their creators. Personal sales promotions by candidates added an additional personal approach. SPAR Slovenia also mentored the candidates and gave its commitment to sell the winning product in SPAR stores nationwide.

Start it up, Slovenia! was promoted through various channels including TV coverage, the show’s web page, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and SPAR Slovenia’s own website. All of the communication consistently invited everyone in Slovenia to support their favourite start-ups by purchasing their products, helping to make at least one of them the winner.

Twelve strong ideas

The business ideas presented by the young entrepreneurs in SPAR and INTERSPAR stores in Slovenia were innovative and ambitious, varying from fresh chilli sauces, traditional Slovenian miniature cakes, colourful designer socks, handmade natural deodorant, tattoo care, chocolates, salts, locally brewed beer, handmade toys, an urban garden to grow spices, an automatic system to turn off the lights of motorcycles, and a strategic social game.

Remarkable results

The young entrepreneurs were delighted but overwhelmed: “This moment represents our future, freedom and repayment for all our efforts. When we signed the contract with SPAR, we felt incredibly proud, but at the same time it is a great responsibility to stay relevant to the market and become even better with SPAR as a partner.”

In addition to the winner, who produced Nelipot handmade natural deodorant, nine other young start-ups signed a contract with SPAR. Another remarkable result was the fact that the products from seven entrepreneurs remained category leaders in SPAR stores up to three months after the TV show ended.

SPAR Slovenia attracted younger customers through this initiative, changed the perception of the brand, gained 12 unique products, which differentiated the retailer from others, achieved strong sales results and benefited from a lot of publicity and coverage in social media.

Igor Mervič, Managing Director at SPAR Slovenia, is enthusiastic about the Start It Up, Slovenia! project, and is optimistic that the story will continue: “I am convinced that all entrepreneurs have great opportunities to succeed. With nine, we have signed one year contracts. I congratulate them on everything they have been able to accomplish.”

Communicating the idea

The 10 TV-shows were aired every Sunday evening, presenting the stories of 12 young and innovative Slovenian entrepreneurs. After each episode, the new business heroes were interviewed and featured in business and lifestyle articles, advertorials, SPAR media (leaflets and magazine), and in SPAR TV ads.

Strong social media support linked together the accounts of entrepreneurs and partners. The engagement was additionally boosted by Facebook live-streams, prize-winning competitions, unpublished recordings, best show excerpts, behind the scenes, project updates, etc. Social media influencers (e.g. former Miss Universe Slovenia) snapped pictures using #StartitupSlovenia products.

Awards

The success of the promotion of entrepreneurship amongst producers in Slovenia resulted in recognition at the WARC Innovation Awards 2017, which awarded silver to the campaign for being one of the most innovative in the world. Marketing Magazine awarded Best Marketing Campaign in the Adriatic region, whilst the Slovenia Advertising Festival awarded the grand prize for the best integral communication campaign. The campaign also won the 2017 AmCham Award for Innovation.

Season 2

The success and international recognition of this campaign exceeded all expectations. The show became something of a movement in Slovenia, reflecting the current global trend of a generation that wants to positively impact the world. Due to the great success, the second season was launched in September 2017. Eight young entrepreneurs are once again competing to win the support and loyalty of SPAR customers in Slovenia.

SPAR Italy Partners sponsor Serie A team FC Crotone for the 2017/2018 season

SPAR Italy Partners sponsor Serie A team FC Crotone for the 2017/2018 season

Italy, 2017-Oct-11 — /EPR Retail News/ — Two SPAR Italy Partners are sponsoring Serie A football teams this season.

DESPAR Southern and Central Italy Partner, Maiora is sponsoring Serie A (Italy’s top football league) team FC Crotone during the 2017/2018 season. INTERSPAR under DESPAR Northeast Partner, Aspiag Service, is sponsoring the Spal 2013 team from the city of Ferrara in the first three matches of the season.

President and Managing Director of Maiora (DESPAR Partner for Southern and Central Italy) declared: “We are proud to be associating our DESPAR brand with one of the strongest teams in Southern Italy, FC Crotone. This team created a legendary sport experience last year, and we identify with it because we also are persistent and determined.”

The agreement between DESPAR and the Crotone football club offers DESPAR great brand exposure at the Scida stadium and the team’s training field in Crotone. In addition, a number of football players from FC Crotone will promote the brand in various marketing and communication activities that will be shared on traditional media and news channels, including social media platforms.

DESPAR will run numerous initiatives on its “Mydespar” Facebook page. Users who like the page and join the various activities promoted there, will be able to win stadium tickets to watch a match, and many official branded items from FC Crotone. Among the first prizes up for grabs, will be the official team jerseys carrying the names of the lucky competition winners.

Aspiag Service, DESPAR partner in Northeast Italy and Emilia Romagna, is sponsoring Spal 2013, a football team from Ferrara, that made its return to the Serie A this year, after an absence of more than fifty years. The sponsorship agreement sees the INTERSPAR Brand featured on the Spal match jerseys during the first three matches of the 2017/2018 season.

“We are happy to accompany this longstanding team returning to top league football,” declared Fabio Donà, Marketing Director of DESPAR Northeast. Supporting sports is an important expression of our involvement with local communities – which we see as one of our major strengths – but also because this football club has always shown persistence, endurance and an ability to rise again. The qualities of this team are a real example for all, as it made a very quick rise from Pro League to Serie A.”

For DESPAR this sponsorship represents an opportunity to revive its already strong relationship with the city of Ferrara, where it operates two company-owned INTERSPAR stores, one EUROSPAR store, and twenty independently-owned DESPAR and EUROSPAR stores.

Spal 2013 President, Mr Walter Mattioli, highlighted the importance of working together with a company sharing the values that are dear to the Spal club: “Our large sport family embraces, besides the first team, also some 400 players from the youth teams. It is important to choose partners who share the same vision: we managed to get back to Serie A by working together towards one common goal. We will remain in Serie A by continuing to work in this way.”

SPAR Guangdong supports programmes for children in Dongguan Province

Guangdong, China, 2017-Oct-06 — /EPR Retail News/ — SPAR Partners in China are very actively involved in community initiatives. Here, we share details of only two of the recently held programmes for children, focused on Dongguan Province.

SPAR Guangdong launched the Hazeline Jingxin Green Backpack Charitable event for children of migrant families jointly with Unilever Hazeline at the SPAR Guangdong New Migrants Happiness Garden. The goal is to work with organisations, social community partners and individual volunteers focused on both the physical and mental well-being of all children. The celebrity Yi Nengjing, as the founder of Jingxin Library Foundation, attended a series of events and spent a lovely day together with children to raise awareness around special needs and care for children from migrant families. This is the fourth year that Yi Nengjing is working together with SPAR Guangdong and Unilever to distribute free backpacks for children in need, each of them filled with eight or nine grade-specific books including The Wizard of Oz, Peter Pan, Fairy Tales by Andersen, and other great books for children.  SPAR Guangdong has provided financial support to SPAR Jiarong Happiness Garden since the establishment of first location at Gekeng Community in 2012. This programme encourages community, individual and business alike to come together for the good of migrant families in the city of Dongguan, provides a safe and warm place where children can do homework, reading books, have fun, try new activities, reach out psychological counselling, and enjoy band practice.

3rd Summer Camp “Trip with Kids” jointly supported by SPAR Guangdong and Unilever was a great success. The Summer Camp was started at the headquarter of SPAR Guangdong, welcoming 40 children, combining those who had remained in countryside after their parents had moved to urban centres seeking employment and children in need from the Hengli Gekeng community service centre. At this very exciting five-day trip, children experience outdoor activities, taking a tour of Humen Opium War Museum, Shenzhen Window of the World Park, and enjoying all that fun activities and classes to keep them entertained. Most of the children visited places they had never seen before and experienced hands-on barbecue and how to set up canopy tents.

SPAR Norway tackles food waste with 50% off on all freshly baked bread one hour before closing time

Norway, 2017-Sep-19 — /EPR Retail News/ — SPAR Norway is aiming to reduce food waste by 270 tons a year. How does it hope to achieve this? By offering a 50 percent discount on all freshly baked bread one hour before closing time.

Before officially launching the bread waste reduction scheme in August, it was first tested in selected SPAR stores, which reported a 16% reduction in bread waste. On an annual basis, this correlates to a saving of 270 tons of bread.

The stores that participated in the trial noticed a boost in foot traffic in the last hour of trading and received positive feedback from customers who expressed their appreciation of the scheme.

The positive results from the test stores were achieved without any advertising or marketing so it is hoped that even better results will be achieved with the official launch in all SPAR stores.

SPAR Norway’s Marketing Director, Martin Munthe-Kaas, said: “It has never been more important to take care of the environment and we must all do our bit to help this cause. Food waste is one of the greatest environmental challenges of our time and a study from 2015 states that in Norway, 355,000 tons of food is wasted each year. This number must be reduced and we hope that our new food waste scheme will go some way to helping this happen.”

To ensure full resource utilisation, any surplus bread unsold will be given to pig farmers to supplement the pigs food. Instore communication material such as posters and shelf markers have been shipped to 259 SPAR and 28 EUROSPAR stores across the country to create awareness of the campaign.

SPAR Croatia successfully converts 40 Billa stores into SPAR

Croatia, 2017-Aug-30 — /EPR Retail News/ — Earlier this year, SPAR Croatia’s acquisition of all Billa stores in the country was approved and within just two months, 40 Billa stores were converted to SPAR. The deal also included the takeover of the former Billa logistics centre.

The acquired stores are located throughout Croatia, from Istria to Dalmatia and from Slavonia to the capital, Zagreb. The sales areas of the stores vary from 500 to 1,500m².

All 1,900 Billa employees were incorporated into SPAR Croatia’s personnel. “We welcome our new colleagues and are delighted with the increase in the number of SPAR Supermarkets in Croatia,” said Helmut Fenzl, CEO of SPAR Croatia.

“The acquisition of Billa is an important strategic step and represents a new phase in the development of SPAR in the country.” With a market share of about 9%, SPAR is one of the major players in the Croatian food retail market.

More than just a new logo

The conversion of a Billa store involves more than just a new logo on the façade. It means strict planning, exact organisation, a complete system integration and of course, rapid induction of new SPAR employees. Teams of people from various departments such as Sales, Organisation, Controlling and IT from a number of Aspiag countries (Austria SPAR International AG) have to come together to ensure that all store conversions run as smoothly as possible. All cash desks have to be replaced and the scales re-installed and configured. About 8,000 articles need to be added to the system and 10,000 price labels per store reprinted and attached. It’s a challenging team effort but one that definitely pays off in the long run.

Integration of new SPAR colleagues

To introduce former Billa employees to the SPAR world, a programme of internal trainings were held. Helmut Fenzl, CEO of SPAR Croatia, and Danijel Vidiš, Managing Director of SPAR Croatia, presented the SPAR organisation and the SPAR story to the new colleagues as part of their welcome session. They also informed employees of the work and procedures involved in the acquisition process. SPAR Croatia currently employs over 4,000 people in SPAR and INTERSPAR stores, including former Billa stores.

SPAR Poland accelerates its expansion this summer with new store openings

SPAR Poland accelerates its expansion this summer with new store openings

Poland, 2017-Aug-30 — /EPR Retail News/ — It’s been a busy summer for SPAR Poland with the opening of four new stores in the space of just one week and the planning of more at an advanced stage.

SPAR in Poland is systematically increasing its number of franchise stores. The four new stores are located in Tychy (243m2), Zabrzeg (467m2), Konin (450m2) and Szydłów (200m2). Four more store openings are in the pipeline and in early September, a new EUROSPAR Supermarket in Kokoszyce, is due to be rolled out – making for a fitting end to a busy summer of expansion.

This year alone, SPAR Poland has opened 21 stores, proving the potential for growth in what is the biggest market in central Europe. Apart from growing store numbers, SPAR Poland has also been focusing on developing its own brand product range, in particular its premium range. In response to the demand for healthy snack options for instance, it recently introduced a new selection of premium dried fruit and nuts. A new range of pet food products has also been introduced – filling a gap in the market for this category.

Another new development has been the refresh of the core SPAR product line’s packaging design, which is now in line with the design style developed by SPAR International.

SPAR Ireland launches new community initiative to deliver life-saving defibrillator at every EUROSPAR Supermarket

Ireland, 2017-Aug-23 — /EPR Retail News/ — SPAR Ireland has launched a new community initiative, which aims to deliver a life-saving defibrillator at every EUROSPAR Supermarket. There are currently 50 EUROSPAR Supermarkets nationwide ensuring new defibrillators become available throughout the country – many in areas where a defibrillator is not currently available.

Michael Lyster of RTÉ (Radio, Television Ireland) was on hand to help launch the initiative at the Radisson Blu St. Helen’s Hotel in Dublin with Malachy Hanberry, EUROSPAR Managing Director and David Menzies, Co Chair and Medical Director, Cardiac First Responders Ireland. Michael suffered a cardiac arrest in 2015 and had to be resuscitated by the Cardiac First Responders. Therefore, he fully understands the importance of publically accessible defibrillators in our communities: “I am delighted to help launch the Defibrillator at every EUROSPAR Supermarket initiative as this equipment can really mean the difference between life and death. Having a defibrillator in a public space raises the profile of heart disease and ensures that people know where to find one when an emergency occurs. I look forward to the day when every EUROSPAR Supermarkets has a defibrillator in place,” he said.

The Defibrillator at every EUROSPAR Supermarket initiative will raise funds for the installation of a publically accessible, automatic external defibrillator (AED) located outside the EUROSPAR Supermarket. Funds will be raised through instore collection, community fund-raising activities and contributions from the sale of a selection of SPAR Own Brand products.

According to Malachy Hanberry, EUROSPAR Managing Director, “EUROSPAR Supermarkets are located at the heart of local communities. Therefore we wanted to come up with an initiative that looks after the well-being of the people in our communities and what better way than to install defibrillators outside our stores. EUROSPAR is focused, in a very tangible way, on helping to save lives in your local community.”

EUROSPAR, in partnership with CFR Ireland, will provide “chain of survival” awareness and CPR training in the local community as well as training for retailers and staff members. This training and awareness will be carried out by local Community First Responders to coincide with the installation of the AED at local stores.

Each AED is automated to produce a report tracking the status of the machine and highlighting any issues on a daily basis. It is EUROSPAR’s intention that each AED will be registered on the National Ambulance Service (NAS), CFR Ireland and other local defibrillator databases.

Ireland, 2017-Aug-17 — /EPR Retail News/ — SPAR has announced that Cystic Fibrosis Ireland will be its new national charity partner for the next two years. SPAR has vowed to raise up to €300,000 during this time for Cystic Fibrosis Ireland through collection boxes in 400 SPAR stores nationwide, a donation on selected SPAR Own Brand products and a number of key events.

To mark this new partnership, SPAR Ireland recently hosted a coffee morning at luxury Dublin members club, Residence. The event was attended by well-known cystic fibrosis campaigner, Jillian McNulty, who successfully campaigned for the government funding of the Orkambi drug, which is used to treat the underlying causes of the disease.

Philip Watt, CEO Cystic Fibrosis Ireland said: “We would like to thank SPAR for choosing Cystic Fibrosis Ireland as their chosen charity. CF is a genetically inherited disease that primarily affects the lungs and the digestive system. Ireland has the highest incidence of cystic fibrosis in the world. Unfortunately there is no cure for cystic fibrosis, but medical and scientific research has greatly improved the treatment of this disease in recent years.”

Willie O’Byrne, Managing Director, BWG Foods (owners and operators of the SPAR Brand in Ireland) said: “SPAR is proud to work with Cystic Fibrosis Ireland as our charity partner. We hope that our support will continue to help improve the quality of the lives of those living with cystic fibrosis in Ireland. Aside from our charity boxes in stores, we will also be making a regular donation from the sale of our SPAR Own brand products and be involved in a number of fundraising events to raise as much funds as possible for Cystic Fibrosis Ireland.”

The funds raised by SPAR will be used to support the independent living of those with cystic fibrosis. Those living with this disease face many challenges in areas such as education, health, housing, employment and family support.

Cystic Fibrosis Ireland (CFI) is a voluntary organisation that was set up in 1963 to improve treatment and facilities for people with cystic fibrosis in Ireland. CFI seeks to provide the best possible quality of life for people with cystic fibrosis by raising funds through fundraising and donations from the public.

SPAR India opens its 18th store located in the Prozone Mall in the city of Coimbatore

India, 2017-Aug-11 — /EPR Retail News/ — SPAR India has officially opened its 18th store – a new and innovative supermarket in the Prozone Mall in the city of Coimbatore.

This next generation SPAR Hypermarket offers customers an exciting shopping experience with the use of state-of-the-art technology. The Coimbatore store spans 2,787 m2 and offers a large product assortment which is good value for money. All staff members have been hired locally to provide personalised customer service, evoking the spirit of shopping at a local, neighbourhood store.

Commenting on the launch, Mr Rajeev Krishnan, Managing Director & CEO, of SPAR India said: “We understand that over the past 10 years, customers have evolved and so have their shopping aspirations. We understand that as we grow, we must not forget the importance of connecting one-on-one with our customers. With our latest SPAR Hypermarket, we have created a shopping experience for our customers that is beyond a transactional operation and is shaped by a personal approach with the needs of our local customers being fully understood. The new SPAR store in Coimbatore aims to offer an experience that appeals to each family member.

“We believe in inclusive growth that takes the local communities into account and as such, we have partnered with farmers, fishermen and small-medium businesses in each region for the sourcing of products that our customers want and need.”

Educate, Entertain & Engage

Our instore ‘Experience Sections’, which are a distinctive new addition, are uniquely designed for customers, depending on the role they play in their family.

Beauty: A beauty section has been added, enabling customers to get a makeover done whilst visiting the hypermarket.

Children: For the first time in the country, SPAR has put all the kids products in the same section called ‘Little Wonders’. An interactive touchscreen has been added to this section with ‘infotainment’ content.

Seasonal products: There are sections such as ‘4 seasons’, displaying the highlights of the season, including regional offers and products.

Refresh: This section brings to life cuisines from 20 different restaurants with handpicked recipes to infuse local flavours. The Head Chef has experience working across premium and small format restaurants to offer a culinary delight to tickle the taste buds.

Home Furnishing: The ‘Home sweet Home’ section houses everything needed for home décor and has an interactive display. This allows customers to try out bedspreads, curtains, and other décor products virtually to choose products that best suit their home.

Fresh: This section located near the ‘Farmers Market’ offers value-added service where customers can get fresh fruit juices and salads freshly made using vegetables and fruits selected by them. The customers can also have their fruit and vegetables cleaned and cut for them.

Grandma’s corner: This section offers insight into the world of homemade goodies such as pickles, spices and more. This will become a place where the grandmothers of the community can meet to interact and create delicious, homemade treats.

Innovative & interactive technology

The store offers increased interactivity through technology by striking a strategic collaboration with BOSCH. The store has technology layered in three dimensions:

  1. Did you know: This knowledge series helps the customer understand the benefits of various products and provides little nuggets of information about the hypermarket. Information is displayed in different places through digital signage and tablets, which help the customer make informed shopping choices.
  2. Virtual reality: This enables customers to gain a 3D experience of products that they purchase, especially in the home furnishing section.
  3. SPAR Playpad: A 55-inch, interactive multi-touch screen that offers ‘infotainment’ content for kids along with providing scope to play around and be creative.

Furthermore, back-end efficiency has been set up for a faster billing system that ensures a better customer experience. The store will also offer home-delivery through its omni-channel service, which enables the customer to order online through: www.sparindia.com
