ShopRite celebrates the grand opening of its newest supermarket in Philadelphia

Philadelphia, PA, 2018-Mar-08 — /EPR Retail News/ — ShopRite today (March 05, 2018) announced the grand opening of its newest full-service supermarket in Philadelphia on Sunday, March 4. A special luncheon to introduce the new store to the community was held Feb. 28.

Located at 5597 Tulip St., the ShopRite of Bridge and Harbison will be operated by the Ammons family and their Ammons Supermarkets, LLC, which also owns the ShopRite of Aramingo Avenue and a ShopRite store in Mullica Hill, NJ. The family’s newest store offers a large selection of freshly prepared foods, organic products and popular store brands, along with a community room, café, and store dietitian. To mark the opening, the Ammons family presented a $10,000 donation to the Philabundance Food Bank during Wednesday’s community luncheon.

The store, which will serve as the anchor of the Shoppes at Wissinoming, will bring affordable fresh food and produce to an area with little access to full service supermarkets. Planning for the store began five years ago, before the city’s beverage tax was proposed by the mayor and enacted in January 2017. That tax has led to beverage sale losses of nearly 60 percent for grocery store and supermarket operators in the city.

“Despite the challenging business climate in the city since the beverage tax was implemented, our family made a decision to move forward with this new store and keep our commitment to the community. We are excited to open another great ShopRite and are confident that this new, full-service supermarket will become a destination location in the neighborhood,” said Peter Ammons, who works alongside his father, brother and sister in the family’s supermarkets.

Customers who visit the new store will see that commitment fulfilled. The state-of-the-art supermarket includes fresh bake and floral shops; a seafood department with fresh, daily deliveries; meat department with trained butchers, and a large selection of organic and popular store brands such as ShopRite’s Wholesome Pantry line. An on-site dietitian will also be available to offer free, one-on-one consultations, store tours and meal planning for customers.

The store itself is anchored with a large produce department and food court with grill, pizza station and custom bake shop. A conference room at the supermarket will also be available to civic groups for meetings.
ShopRite of Bridge & Harbison will employ close to 300 full- and part-time workers when it opens and the new shopping center and supermarket is expected to stimulate more investment in the community while giving local residents more healthy food options.

The store officially opened Sunday, March 4, at 6 a.m. and will operate seven days a week, from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.

TV Chef James Martin announces new venture with leading supermarket Asda

LEEDS, England, 2016-May-02 — /EPR Retail News/ — Today (Thursday 28th April) James Martin announces a new venture with leading supermarket Asda, bringing the much-loved chef back into British kitchens with a commitment to making it easy for people to enjoy great tasting, quality food no matter what their budget.

Both from Yorkshire and proud of their northern roots, Asda and James will be cooking up a storm together in the coming months, giving food inspiration to families every day of the week throughout summer.

The partnership is part of Asda’s Project Renewal blueprint to transform its business and boost its Save Money Live Better brand strategy as the retailer looks to differentiate itself with customers both in stores and online.

The first campaign, which will be masterminded by recently appointed Saatchi & Saatchi, is due to hit in June across multiple channels from TV to digital and in-store, with a second burst taking the partnership through the key Christmas trading period and beyond.

James Martin said: “To me Asda represents everyday kitchens up and down the country and that’s why this partnership comes from the heart. I can’t think of a better way to offer inspiration to busy families looking to cook up simple, tasty meals on a budget while still having time to enjoy life!

“As a born and bred Yorkshire man, I’m also looking forward to getting back to my roots to help people realise that low prices doesn’t mean low quality. Andy Clarke, Asda’s President and CEO said: “This partnership is all about a meeting of minds when it comes to the core values of our customers, making James Martin a natural fit for Asda. We’re excited about working together to showcase exactly what Asda stands for, which is delivering quality food at everyday low prices and has been since we opened our doors over 50 years ago.

“We know that our customers lead busy lives and want to make the most of family time together, we also know that they are constantly looking for inspiration when it comes to meal solutions and at prices they can trust. Wegmans opens its newest 126,000 sq. ft. supermarket in Hilltop Village Center, Alexandria, VA on June 14

ALEXANDRIA, VA, 2015-6-9 — /EPR Retail News/ — By the time Store Manager Mike Dempsey opens Wegmans’ newest 126,000 sq. ft. supermarket in Hilltop Village Center (corner of Telegraph and Beulah) on Sunday, June 14, he will have built a team of 550 employees, who are ready to deliver the incredible customer service that Wegmans is known for. Treat employees with care and respect, Dempsey believes, and they’ll treat customers with that same care and respect. “It’s the ‘golden rule’ of great customer service.”

Dempsey had been a store manager previously, at the Lake Manassas Wegmans in Gainesville and the Potomac Wegmans in Woodbridge. When he was asked to be the Alexandria store manager, he jumped at the opportunity. “What’s new and unique at the Alexandria store is that it’s our first store in Virginia to include The Pub, Wegmans’ casual dining restaurant that serves freshly prepared seasonal foods and a large selection of craft beers, food-friendly wines, and seasonal cocktails.” There is also the Market Café with an endless selection of prepared foods and indoor and outdoor seating for 300.

Step back in time to 1994: Mike and his wife-to-be Charlene had just become engaged. Both were working full time but they wanted to build up their bank accounts, in view of what was coming up – a wedding, a place to live, and eventually, a family. So both took part-time jobs to earn extra dollars to “pay for the life ahead of us,” in Dempsey’s words. That’s how he found himself working part-time at Wegmans in Ithaca, NY.

“I never aimed to work in a grocery store. My college degree was in architectural engineering, and I had a full-time job in construction.”

Soon, though, he was rethinking career plans: “I was surrounded by great managers who spoke to me about a career with Wegmans.” He was enjoying his part-time job more than his “real” job. One day, a store manager sat down with him to discuss the company’s expansion plans. “I saw that Wegmans was a growing company and I began thinking seriously about leaving the construction industry.”

In his career with Wegmans, Dempsey has also become a genuine food enthusiast. “I am inspired to try new products and recipes so that I can teach our customers about healthier options for their families. I’ve gotten to like the flavors that go along with a healthier way of life.” Some favorites? Scallops, sushi, and summer foods like grilled lemon-pepper chicken with grilled vegetables, along with pear and provolone salad.

Alexandria is Wegmans’ 86th store, the 7th in Virginia. The company’s first VA store opened in 2004 in Sterling (Dulles). Today, Wegmans has more than 3,600 VA employees, and that number will grow next year when it opens two stores in Richmond and one in Charlottesville.

“Sunday morning can’t come soon enough,” says Dempsey. “Our employees are so excited to show their friends and family our store, and I can’t wait for our new customers to meet our employees. They are what sets us apart.”

Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. is an 86-store supermarket chain with stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, and Massachusetts. Co-operative named Most Improved Supermarket at Welfare Awards

The Co-operative has been named “Most Improved Supermarket” at Compassion in World Farming’s annual Good Farm Animal Welfare Awards.

The accolade was presented to the retailer because of its move to convert all of its own-brand fresh pork and sausages to its higher welfare Elmwood standard earlier this year.

The Co-operative worked with a group of specialist British pig farmers to identify issues regarding the welfare of the sows and piglets throughout the farming process. The Elmwood standard includes reduced transport time, increased natural light, straw bedding, environmental enrichments and a healthier diet for the pigs.

The retailer’s move to extend the Elmwood standard to fresh pork followed the conversion of all its fresh own-brand British chicken to Elmwood or above, starting with fresh whole chickens in October 2007.

The Co-operative’s Elmwood British chicken range now also includes own-brand fresh chicken fillets and portions, as well as fresh chicken products including barbecue, breaded, flavoured and ready-to-eat roast and flavoured chicken. In 2010, Elmwood was rolled out to include all own-brand whole turkeys, crowns and fresh plain turkey products – including fillets, steaks, mince and pieces.

The Co-operative also won a Good Dairy Award, partly in recognition of its forthcoming move in August to a dedicated milk producer scheme, whereby some 240 British dairy farmers will receive a support package including a price premium in return for high standards in animal welfare.

Andrew Nicholson, Agricultural Development Manager at The Co-operative Group, commented: “We’re pleased to win these prestigious awards in recognition of the moves we have made over the last twelve months to further improve animal welfare.

“Animal welfare and supporting British farmers are very important to our business, and add to our Co-operative difference. As an organisation owned and shaped by our members, we always strive to shape our business based on our ethical principles. Animal welfare forms an integral part of our Ethical Plan, launched earlier this year.”

Waitrose, The UK Supermarket Chain, Has Confirmed It Has Exchanged Contracts To Open Its First Shop In Colchester, Essex

Waitrose, the food shops of the John Lewis Partnership, has announced that it has entered into agreement with developers, St. Andrew’s Avenue LLP (assisted by Aquila Developments Ltd.), for the former Glyn Webb DIY store site in St. Andrew’s Avenue, Colchester to be turned into their newest store. The initial exchange of contracts was conditional to formal approval of the application by the Council, which has now been received, so work will now proceed.

While Waitrose only signed up in August, the developers already had an application to open a supermarket on the site recommended for approval by Colchester Council’s Planning Officers. This deal continues to build on the food shop’s ambitious expansion plans, which have seen the supermarket develop into a national brand over the last five years.

The new Waitrose supermarket will have a retail area of 23,000sq ft and will offer 222 car parking spaces for shoppers. Work will start on converting the store in January 2009 with an anticipated opening in October next year. Up to 150 job opportunities will be created for the local community. As employees in the John Lewis Partnership, they will be entitled to a share in annual profits, shopping discounts and a say in how the business is run.

Waitrose Director of Development, Nigel Keen, said: “There is a real passion forquality food here and we welcome the opportunity to bring Waitrose to Colchester for the first time so people can discover more about our brand. We pride ourselves on becoming part of the fabric of a town and we look forward to playing an important role in adding to the vibrancy of the town and offering more choice for the local community.”

Tony Chambers, on behalf of the developers, added: “We are delighted Waitrose has committed itself to the scheme. We believe this will create a real focal point for people in Colchester and provide them with key services at the heart of their community.”

The shop will offer a wide range of quality fresh foods and groceries, an award-winning wine collection, specialist meat, fish and cheese counters together with a bakery and delicatessen.
