One of the most critically acclaimed film at this year’s Cannes film festival Divines coming to Netflix

Critic Favorite One Of Many Netflix Acquisitions At Recent Cannes Film Festival

AMSTERDAM, 2016-Jun-09 — /EPR Retail News/ — Divines, one of the most critically acclaimed and talked-about films at this year’s Cannes film festival, will be available to Netflix members exclusively in most of the world later this year.

Described by critics as “one of the best young-adult films to come out of France in recent years,” the funny, often suspenseful and emotional drama tells the story of Dounia, a tough, but naive teenager who sees getting rich or dying trying as her most viable option. Set in a ghetto near Paris where drugs and religion reign supreme, Dounia is hungry for her share of power and success. Enlisting the help of her best friend she decides to follow the footsteps of a respected dealer. When Dounia meets a young sensuous dancer, her life takes a surprising turn.

Houda Benyamina’s directorial debut received rave reviews from critics and was awarded the Caméra d’Or, an award of the Cannes Film Festival for the best first feature film presented in one of the event’s selections. Critics heap praise on Oulaya Amamra’s “breakout” performance as Dounia.

“We saw Divines before it was award winning, praised by critics and received a standing ovation at Cannes, we immediately recognized it as an extraordinary film and acquired it early on,” said Ted Sarandos, chief content officer at Netflix. “We’re passionate about bringing our members great films from around the world and thrilled to bring Benyamina’s debut film to our members.”

“Emotions bring people together and are a reflection of society. Thanks to Netflix, Divines will cross borders and the world will be able to enjoy this universal story of love and friendship,” said filmmaker Houda Benyamina. “I am very happy with the collaboration with Netflix.”

Netflix members everywhere, except France, will be able to watch Divines later this year. In France Divines won’t be available on Netflix until 2019 in accordance with French media chronology rules.

Other Netflix acquisitions at Cannes

Netflix aims to bring the best film, series, documentaries and kids programming from around the world to the world. We have already announced the acquisition of Wheelman, which stars Frank Grillo in a film directed by Jeremy Rush that will have a worldwide premiere on Netflix in 2017.

Another Cannes film prize winner Netflix members everywhere can look forward to is French director Sacha Wolff’s Mercenary (Mercenaire). The film tells the story of Soane, a young man of Wallisian origin from New Caledonia, who defies his father’s authority to go and play rugby in France. Left to his own devices on the other side of the world, his odyssey will take him on the path to becoming a man in a world where there is a price to be paid for success.

Further Cannes acquisitions Netflix members will be able to watch include:

All the neighboring apartments have already been acquired by a company which has other plans for that plot. Clara has pledged to only leave her place upon her death. (Aquarius will be on Netflix in North America, Australia, New Zealand, Asia, Latin America (outside of Brazil) UK with other regions to be confirmed.)

The Day Will Come – A Danish drama directed by Jesper Nielsen developed and written by Søren Sveistrup, known from hit shows like The Killing. Very Big Shot – The feature debut of Lebanese directed Mir-Jean Bou Chaaya. The comedy deals with brothers Ziad and Joe who run a small but lucrative drug-dealing business out of their takeout pizzeria in one of Beirut’s working-class districts. With their youngest brother Jad about to be released from prison, Ziad and Joe plan to go straight, but their supplier isn’t keen to see his dealers retire.

Journey to Greenland – A French comedy directed by Sébastien Betbeder. Two thirty-something actors from Paris hit a rough patch and decide to leave the city and fly away to Kullorsuaq, one of the most remote villages of Greenlands. Among the Inuit community, they discover the local customs and their friendship is challenged.

Netflix acquired subscription video on demand (SVOD) rights on a global basis to COLONY

Netflix Acquires Second Window SVOD Rights to COLONY, Which Premieres on USA Network January 14Sep 28, 2015

Beverly Hills, CA, 2015-9-28 — /EPR Retail News/ — Netflix, Inc., Legendary Television and Universal Cable Productions announced today that Netflix has acquired subscription video on demand (SVOD) rights on a global basis to COLONY, a highly anticipated new drama from Carlton Cuse (“Lost”) and Ryan Condal (“Hercules”), which premieres on USA January 14, 2016. COLONY is a co-production between Legendary Television and Universal Cable Productions.

Leading up to its Season 1 premiere Netflix has licensed second window streaming rights to COLONY, which now joins the ranks of other popular, highly-rated, and critically acclaimed series that Netflix has recently acquired such as “How to Get Away with Murder,” “Jane the Virgin,” and “Zoo,” all entering their second seasons. Netflix will stream COLONY about a year after its linear broadcast on USA in the U.S., on Bell Media’s Bravo in Canada, and after its linear broadcast in other territories worldwide.

Set in the very near future, COLONY centers on one family’s struggle to survive and bring liberty back to the people of an occupied Los Angeles.

SAG winner Josh Holloway (“Lost”) stars as former FBI agent Will Bowman and Satellite Award winner Sarah Wayne Callies (“The Walking Dead”) stars as his wife, Katie, in the series which takes place in a dangerous world of divided ideologies. While some choose to collaborate with the occupation and benefit from the new order, others rebel and suffer the consequences. After being separated from their son during the invasion, Will and Katie are willing to do whatever is necessary to be reunited with him. Thus, when the powerful Proxy Snyder (Peter Jacobson, “House”) offers Will a chance to get his son back if he will collaborate with the occupational government, Will and Katie find themselves faced with the toughest decision of their lives. They will have to go beyond whatever they thought possible, risking their lives and their relationship to protect their family. Nelson McCormick (“24”) also executive produces.

“We knew from the moment we saw it that COLONY is the kind of smart serialized drama that Netflix members around the world would love watching,” said Ted Sarandos, Netflix Chief Content Officer.

“We here at Legendary Television are thrilled that COLONY has a new global home in Netflix,” said Bruce Rosenblum, President, Legendary Television & Digital Media. “Netflix is the perfect service to stream COLONY after its initial broadcast in all countries outside North America, whether allowing fans to catch up with their favorite show before the new season airs or enticing new fans to the series. Netflix’s purchase of rights to COLONY, even before Season 1 has aired, is a huge vote of confidence for this exciting new drama.”

“As we ready to premiere COLONY in January, this deal with Netflix will expand the global audience reach of a show we’re all so proud of right out of the gate,” said Jeff Wachtel, Chief Content Officer, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment and President, Universal Cable Productions. “In this age of new business models and innovative windowing, this unprecedented access to international viewers is an extraordinarily positive sign in the right direction to grow the series as a long-term asset for our studio.”

“We applaud Netflix for recognizing COLONY’s value even before it has begun to air on USA. NBCUniversal is pleased to partner with Netflix on COLONY to make the show available to an even larger audience in the U.S. and Canada,” said Frances Manfredi, President, NBCUniversal, TV & New Media Distribution, U.S. and Canada.

NBCUniversal TV & New Media Distribution holds domestic distribution rights for COLONY in the U.S.A. and Canada. Legendary Television is the international distribution rights holder.

With Special Correspondents, as with The Office & Extras, Gervais has written a hilarious, modern comedy in which Bana plays a struggling New York based radio journalist, whose arrogance and decadent lifestyle has hindered his career. With his job on the line he fakes front line war reports from the comfort of his hideout above a Spanish restaurant in the heart of Manhattan.

“Special Correspondents is classic Ricky Gervais; smart social satire with heart,” said Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos. “It’s the kind of great grown-up comedy that studios rarely make anymore, one that’s perfect for Netflix members around the world.”

Gervais said’ “Having shaken up the TV industry, Netflix is about to do the same to Hollywood. It’s great to be part of the changing future. Ted Sarandos is the new Godfather of entertainment and he made me an offer I couldn’t refuse.”

The film is a co-production between Bron Studios and Unanimous Entertainment. Ricky Gervais, Unanimous’ Chris Coen, Bron’s Aaron L. Gilbert, Manuel Munz and Larry Sanitsky will produce.

Creator and star of The Office, Extras, and Derek, Gervais has won three Golden Globes, two primetime Emmys and seven BAFTAS. The Office is the most successful British comedy of all time, shown in more than 90 countries with seven remakes. Considered the most influential British comedian since Charlie Chaplin, Gervais is an award winning stand-up comedian, has hosted the Golden Globes three times and has written, directed and acted in the films Cemetery Junction and The Invention of Lying.

Eric Bana is one of Australia’s best known actors and began his career as a comedian in the sketch comedy series Full Frontal before winning critical acclaim in the biographical crime film Chopper. Since then, Bana has starred in such films as Munich, Black Hawk Down, Hulk, The Time Traveler’s Wife, Hanna, and Star Trek. He has received Australia’s highest film and TV awards for his performances and will next be seen in director Jim Sheridan’s The Secret Scripture, Guy Ritchie’s Knights of the Round Table: King Arthur and The Finest Hours.
