CVS Health offers Meningitis B vaccines to students, faculty and staff at UMass Amherst

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2017-Dec-01 — /EPR Retail News/ — CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) is offering Meningitis B vaccines to students, faculty and staff at UMass Amherst, in response to two confirmed cases of Meningitis B on campus. CVS Pharmacy stores and MinuteClinic walk-in medical clinics have vaccines available to protect patients against the disease.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) determined that the strains of the meningococcal bacteria that caused both student’s infections are closely related, meaning there may be an increased risk of the disease for other undergraduates on campus. UMass Amherst students who have not been vaccinated are encouraged to get vaccinated. In addition, anyone who has had close contact with a person who has been diagnosed with a meningococcal illness, as well as faculty and staff who have conditions such as asplenia, a complement deficiency, or sickle cell anemia, should also receive the vaccine.

Meningitis B vaccines are fairly new and most college students have not received the vaccine previously. All college students are required to receive a vaccine that protect against four other strains of the meningococcal disease (A, C, W, and Y), but that vaccine does not protect against B, which is the cause of the current infections at UMass Amherst.

Vaccination is the most effective way to protect people from meningococcal infection and CVS Pharmacy and MinuteClinic will be offering the Meningitis B vaccine at the following locations1:

  • 165 University Drive, Amherst, MA 01002 (MinuteClinic also available)
  • 76 North Pleasant Street, Amherst, MA 01002
  • 367 Russell Street, Hadley, MA 01035 (Located inside Target)
  • 366 King Street, Northampton, MA 01060 (MinuteClinic also available)
  • 90 Main Street, Northampton, MA 01060
  • 70 West State Street, Granby, MA 01033
  • Crystal Springs Plaza, 151 North Main Street, Belchertown, MA 01007
  • Route 10, 118 Northampton Street, Easthampton, MA 01027
  • 1616 Memorial Drive, Chicopee, MA 01020
  • 400 Beech Street, Holyoke, MA 01040
  • 1176 Granby Road, Chicopee, MA 01020
  • 451 Center Street, Ludlow, MA 01056
  • 250 Whiting Farms Road, Holyoke, MA 01040
  • 50 Holyoke Street, Holyoke, MA 01040 (Located inside Target)
  • 1990 Boston Road, Wilbraham, MA 01095

All CVS Pharmacy locations can order doses of the vaccine upon request and have it available the next day. Pharmacy and medical clinic staff can assist patients in determining whether the vaccine is covered by their insurance plan.

“Immunizations are an important part of preventive care and a critical way to prevent serious diseases, like Meningitis B,” said Tobias Barker, M.D., Chief Medical Officer of MinuteClinic. “Our CVS pharmacists and MinuteClinic nurse practitioners are ready to provide meningitis vaccinations to the UMass Amherst community, and can help ensure that patients stay up to date on vaccinations in the future.”

No appointment is needed to receive a meningitis vaccination. Patients should bring both their health insurance and prescription insurance cards.

CVS Health encourages Florida residents to receive the Hepatitis A vaccine following increase in locally acquired Hepatitis A cases

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2017-Nov-04 — /EPR Retail News/ — CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) is encouraging unvaccinated Florida residents to receive the Hepatitis A vaccine, following the Florida Department of Health’s (DOH) announcement that the state has seen an increase in locally acquired Hepatitis A cases. MinuteClinic walk-in medical clinics in Florida currently have vaccine available and are able to administer the immunization to patients to protect against Hepatitis A. Many CVS Pharmacy locations have the vaccine available as well. According to the Florida DOH, there have been 34 cases of Hepatitis A infection reported in Broward County since January 2017. During a typical year, the Florida DOH usually receives reports of seven cases of Hepatitis A.

Vaccination is the most effective way to protect people from Hepatitis A and MinuteClinic and CVS Pharmacy are offering the Hepatitis A vaccine at select locations across the state. There are 101 MinuteClinic locations with 10 in Broward County, as well as 876 CVS Pharmacy locations in Florida with 76 in Broward County. Patients planning to go to MinuteClinic to get vaccinated for Hepatitis A can visit MinuteClinic.com to view wait times at nearby clinics. Consumers can visit CVS.com or use the CVS Pharmacy app to locate a nearby CVS Pharmacy and to schedule a Hepatitis A vaccination appointment. “Immunizations are an important part of preventive care and a critical way to prevent the spread of serious illness, like Hepatitis A,” said Tobias Barker, M.D., Chief Medical Officer of MinuteClinic. “Our MinuteClinic nurse practitioners and CVS Pharmacy pharmacists are able to provide vaccinations to Floridians who may have been exposed to the virus or who are unaware of their vaccination status. They can also help ensure that patients stay up to date on vaccinations in the future.”

Hepatitis A vaccine may provide protection against the disease if given within two weeks after exposure. People who have had Hepatitis A disease or previously received two doses of the Hepatitis A vaccine do not need to be immunized for Hepatitis A again. Symptoms of Hepatitis A infection usually appear two to six weeks after exposure and include fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, abdominal discomfort, dark urine, diarrhea, and yellow skin and eyes.

At MinuteClinic, the Hepatitis A vaccine can be provided to can be provided to adults and children 18 months and older. CVS pharmacists can provide the Hepatitis A vaccine to people ages 18 and up. It is administered in one primary dose and a second booster dose, usually administered 6 months later. Vaccine supplies will be replenished at these locations as needed. Patients should check with their insurance plans for coverage details prior to their MinuteClinic or CVS Pharmacy visit.

While vaccination provides the best protection from Hepatitis A, frequent hand-washing with soap and water after using the bathroom, changing a diaper, and before preparing food can help prevent the spread of the illness. Appropriately cooking foods can also help to prevent infection.

New initiative expands access to high quality and convenient health care services for Veterans in Phoenix

PHOENIX, 2017-Apr-19 — /EPR Retail News/ — The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced today (April 18, 2017) a new initiative between the Phoenix VA Health Care System (PVAHCS), TriWest Healthcare Alliance, and MinuteClinic, the retail medical clinic of CVS Health (NYSE: CVS), that will expand access to high quality and convenient health care services for Veterans in Phoenix and surrounding communities. Through this initiative, Phoenix VA HCS nurses, when clinically appropriate, will now be able to refer Veterans to MinuteClinic through the Veterans Choice Program for the treatment of minor illnesses and injuries.

“Our number one priority is getting Veterans access to care when and where they need it. The launch of this partnership will enable VA to provide more care for Veterans in their neighborhoods,” said Dr. Baligh Yehia, the Deputy Undersecretary for Health for Community Care.

Dr. Yehia is leading the VA in its transformational journey to provide Veterans with easy access to personalized care from a robust network of federal and private providers. “Partnerships between VA and private providers are essential to delivering care in the diverse geographies where Veterans live,” he said.

This sentiment is echoed by TriWest, one of VA’s partners in administering the Veterans Choice Program. President and Chief Executive Officer of TriWest, David J. McIntyre, Jr. states, “TriWest values greatly the partnership with community providers who share our commitment to providing Veterans timely, high quality, and convenient health care.”

“This new public-private collaboration between CVS, TriWest and the VA is an important step forward in enhancing choice and flexibility in Veterans’ health care,” said Senator John McCain. “I’ve long believed that Veterans in need of routine health care services should not have to wait in line for weeks to get an appointment when they can visit community health centers like MinuteClinic to receive timely and convenient care. Thanks to the leadership of CVS Health and the VA, Phoenix’s nearly 120,000 Veterans will now be served at 24 different area MinuteClinic locations for minor health care services.”

This innovative program provides Veterans with more options and access points for receiving care for a wide array of minor illnesses and injuries. “We are thrilled to have this new partnership for Phoenix area Veterans. Increasing access and availability of care is crucial. In sending Veterans out into the community, however, we are always conscious of providing the best care coordination we can. We are working to leverage technology to share important clinical information and ensure care continuity,” said Dr. Maureen McCarthy, PVAHCS Chief of Staff.

To facilitate care coordination, the partnership will share electronic health information in the same manner that proved successful in a similar program launched in 2016 with the Palo Alto VA Health Care System. MinuteClinic visit summaries will be sent to a Veteran’s VA primary care physician. This ensures the VA physician has the clinical information necessary for follow-up services in the VA, if appropriate.

Veterans who call the Phoenix VA Health Care System Help Line at 602-222-6550 or 800-574-7174 (toll free) can be referred to one of the 24 MinuteClinic locations in the Phoenix area for treatment of common acute illnesses.

“We believe in the MinuteClinic model of care and are excited to offer our health care services as one potential solution for the Phoenix VA Health Care System and its patients with minor illnesses and injuries,” said CVS MinuteClinic Chief Medical Officer, Tobias Barker, M.D. “We’re looking forward to working with the Phoenix VA Health Care System team to ensure that their patients have additional options for high-quality acute care at times and locations that are convenient for them.”
