Overstock.com takes ParityPledge to improve opportunity for advancement of women into leadership positions

The ParityPledge aims to bring gender equality to the highest levels of business

SALT LAKE CITY, 2017-Dec-12 — /EPR Retail News/ — Overstock.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:OSTK) and its blockchain subsidiary, Medici Ventures, announce they have taken the ParityPledge to increase their commitment to improving the opportunity for advancement of women into leadership positions. By taking the ParityPledge, Overstock and Medici Ventures have committed to interview at least one qualified female candidate for every open executive position, vice president and above, including the C-suite and board of directors.

The ParityPledge is an initiative of Parity.org, a non-profit organization focused on decreasing the amount of gender inequality within businesses. It was founded to correct the blunt reality of gender disparity at the top of companies today, with women representing only 20 percent of S&P 500 corporate executive teams and boards.

“We’re proud to take the ParityPledge to help further our commitment to equal representation of women at the leadership level,” said Meghan Tuohig, Overstock’s vice president of people care. “ParityPledge is a great external compliment to the internal work we have started with the Overstock Women’s Network, which is aimed at providing opportunities for career growth and advancement for our female associates.”

The Overstock Women’s Network was founded by Tuohig in 2017, and uses programming and education for all associates, regardless of gender, to inspire, support, and celebrate females in Overstock’s professional community.

“The most effective teams tend to have diversity amongst their members, bringing different viewpoints and experiences to the table when finding solutions for difficult problems,” said Overstock.com President Saum Noursalehi. “Taking the ParityPledge reaffirms Overstock’s commitment to diversity, and to finding and promoting the best possible talent.”

“We are thankful for organizations like Overstock.com and Medici Ventures that are willing to become role models for change,” said Cathrin Stickney, Parity.org founder and CEO. “We believe their public commitment and example will help us realize exponential progress toward reaching parity at the top.”

“As the technological community in Utah continues to grow, groups like Parity.org and the ParityPledge will help ensure our community grows in a way that is welcoming and empowering for women,” said Jonathan Johnson, Medici Ventures president and Silicon Slopes board member. “Medici Ventures supports this effort that will have a positive impact on so many talented members of the Utahbusiness community.”

Parity.org is scheduled to announce the full list of founding companies, sponsors, and partners during the Silicon Slopes conference in January 2018.

REI invested $1 million in organizations that create opportunities to connect women and girls to nature

  • New $500,000 Force of Nature Fund supports 26 nonprofits across the country
  • Over 500 organizations responded to REI’s call for submissions

SEATTLE, 2017-Aug-28 — /EPR Retail News/ — As part of its commitment to create access to the outdoors for all, REI has invested $1 million in organizations across the country that are creating opportunities to connect women and girls to nature.

In May, REI launched an expansive, consumer-facing effort called Force of Nature to advance gender equity in the outdoors and encourage millions of its members to embrace the outdoors as “the world’s largest level playing field.” As part of the effort, REI committed $500,000 to three national, women-focused nonprofits with whom it already had a relationship, including Camber Outdoors ($400,000), GirlTrek ($50,000) and the YMCA’s GOLD initiative ($50K). It also launched the $500,000 Force of Nature Fund, which extends the co-op’s existing work with women-focused nonprofits into new territory.

Twenty-six nonprofits were selected from over 500 organizations that responded to REI’s open call for submissions. Those 26 investments announced today, will help address obstacles the co-op found in a national study it commissioned on women and the outdoors.

“We believe a life outdoors is a life well lived for all. That means we support equality from the backcountry to the boardroom,” says Jerry Stritzke, REI’s president and CEO. “REI works with hundreds of nonprofits annually to help communities connect with the outdoors, and protect the places we love. A core part of our business model links the co-op’s health to investments in the outdoor community. As we thrive, we share this success. This year, with Force of Nature, we added a specific focus on groups that are creating new and inspiring ways to advance gender equity and inclusion using the outdoors as a platform. The Force of Nature Fund helped us identify hundreds of organizations doing incredible work, and we’re proud to partner with our new grantees to learn and be inspired.”

REI selected the following 26 nonprofit organizations to receive grants totaling $500,000. Awards were based on the fund’s eligibility criteria. Grants range from $5,000 to $25,000.

This investment is part of REI’s broader community investment strategy, which contributed more than $9M in 2017 to nonprofits at the heart of the outdoor community. Since 1976, REI has invested more than $80 million to steward our nation’s public lands, trails, and waterways, and to promote youth development, health and wellness in the outdoors. REI continues to support these efforts through invitation-only grants. For more information, visit:  https://www.rei.com/stewardship/creating-access.

A Site That Offers What Women Want

Read this if:

You are a man seeking to buy a gift she really wants.
You are a lady whose had more than you fair share of ‘interesting’ presents
You want to take the hassle out of present buying

Working in an upmarket gift shop gave Elizabeth Sweeney the idea for I Chose It, a brilliant new website aimed at giving men the chance to buy women the kind of presents they really, really want

Why is it that some men are such rubbish when it comes to buying their loved ones gifts? You could perhaps forgive the younger guys who’ve only just got together with a girl but you’d think that after years of marriage men would know what their wives want.

The answer, though, was always that they didn’t have a clue. I was constantly amazed at the men who used to come into the giftshop where I worked and stand there, gawping.

“Can you help me? I have to get something for my wife’s birthday/wedding anniversary/Christmas/Valentine’s Day present,” they’d say, looking at me with a soulful, puppy-dog expression.

“When’s the event?” I’d enquire.

“Umm, it’s today,” they’d say, almost every time. “It doesn’t matter what I get, I just want to buy her something nice.”

Money was hardly ever an object – what was important was getting her something quickly. They’d always head straight for the obvious gifts – a very predictable piece of jewellery. And then they’d get to the till and say, “I’m awful at wrapping things up, could you gift-wrap it for me?”

Women, on the other hand, would come into the shop and sigh over the lovely things they’d like to own. “I can’t buy it for myself because it would just be so self indulgent,’’ they’d say, looking longingly at a tiny bottle of expensive bath oil or a pink lariat necklace in rose quartz and silver. “Maybe my husband will get me one for my birthday.”

This gave me the idea for our website www.ichoseit.co.uk supplying beautiful gifts for men to buy to give to the women they love. I reasoned that present buying and giving should be an enjoyable and rewarding experience for everyone involved, yet it clearly wasn’t something that the guys were enjoying one bit.

First I looked at other websites purporting to sell a similar dream but they were very predictable and sold chocolates and the kind of black and red lingerie that blokes think women like but actually women don’t want to be seen dead in. And slowly I realised there was a niche here that was ripe for the picking.

So I set up the website I Chose It (www.ichoseit.co.uk), with my brother Nigel. I ran everything past him to get a male point of view, and together we came up with a selection of jewellery, bath products, candles, homeware, clothes and accessories. We sourced a lot of our products locally to our homes in Sussex and it felt good to support small businesses.

In choosing our gifts, I looked for individual luxury items that women would love to wear, to put in their homes or to use on a daily basis. In short wonderful Gifts for Women

Nigel and I hope that the women who receive our gifts will enjoy them as much as we have enjoyed finding them. We also know they will love and appreciate the way each gift arrives, nestled in its own beautiful gift-wrapped box, surrounded with coordinated tissue and ribbon. And of course, there’s nothing to stop women buying their own presents fromI Chose It, either!

Top present buying tips:-
If you’re not absolutely sure of her size, go for accessories like gloves and scarves
Listen to her: women always give out hints about what they want
Buy something that’s uniquely for her, not for the whole family
Don’t buy the same thing you bought last year, even if she loved it!
