Starbucks adds two new macchiato beverages to its menu for a limited time

Seattle, 2017-Feb-28 — /EPR Retail News/ — This time of year, the weather can be wintry one day and spring-like the next. Delicious both hot and iced, Starbucks macchiato is the perfect beverage to suit the season’s changing conditions. Starting tomorrow (February 28), Starbucks is adding for a limited time two new macchiato beverages to its menu at participating stores in the United States and Canada.

“With macchiato, we first pour the steamed milk and then add the espresso,” said Yoke Wong from Starbucks Beverage Development team. “The result is a coffee-forward flavor with beautiful layers.”

For sweater weather, customers can warm up with Starbucks® Coconutmilk Mocha Macchiato. This new hot beverage features espresso shots poured over steamed coconutmilk and combined with a hint of white chocolate mocha sauce. The beverage is finished with caramel sauce in a double crosshatch pattern and a swirl of mocha sauce, creating five layers of espresso sweetness.

On sunny days, Starbucks® Iced Cinnamon Almondmilk Macchiato. The beverage features signature espresso, the creaminess of almondmilk and sweetness of cinnamon dolce syrup are topped with Starbucks signature caramel cross-hatch and a sprinkle of cinnamon dolce topping.

“The original inspiration for the beverage is from horchata, a popular beverage in Spain and Latin America,” Wong said. “It is traditionally made with almond or rice milk and spices like cinnamon, and it is served hot or cold.”

These two new drinks join the full macchiato lineup at Starbucks that includes the original Espresso Macchiato, Latte Macchiato and Caramel Macchiato.

In celebration, here are a few fun facts about the beloved beverage.

Five Things You Didn’t Know About Starbucks Macchiato:

1. Macchiato was on the first Starbucks espresso menu.

When Starbucks began to offer handcrafted coffee beverages 30 years ago, macchiato was on the very first menu.

2. Macchiato means “marked in Italian.”

Every Starbucks macchiato beverage is marked – whether by espresso, foam, or its signature cross-hatch.

3. There’s a difference between an Espresso Macchiato and a Latte Macchiato.

A Starbucks® Espresso Macchiato is two shots of espresso marked with a dollop of foam. A Starbucks® Latte Macchiato is made with steamed milk, foam and shots of espresso.

4. Caramel Macchiato was created for Starbucks 25th anniversary.

Starbucks® Caramel Macchiato was first introduced in 1996 to mark the company’s 25-year anniversary. It was only intended to be available for eight weeks, but proved to be so popular that it has been a customer favorite ever since.

5. There are different Starbucks macchiato beverages around the world.

Customers can also enjoy regional versions of macchiato from time to time. Canada has featured Starbucks® Maple Macchiato, while China offered its own twist on the beverage with Starbucks® Chestnut Macchiato. For a limited time, customers in Asia can enjoy a Starbucks® Tahitian Vanilla Macchiato in select markets.

Starbucks adds Spiced Sweet Cream Nariño 70 Cold Brew to its holiday beverage lineup

Seattle, 2016-Nov-04 — /EPR Retail News/ — For generations, mulling spices have long been a part of the holiday season, with the aroma of cinnamon and nutmeg filling the air as they simmer on stovetops.

This holiday, Starbucks is offering a cool twist on the traditional holiday spice with the new Starbucks® Spiced Sweet Cream Nariño 70 Cold Brew. Starbucks Rewards members will get a first taste of the new beverage starting today (November 3), and later in November the beverage will join Starbucks holiday beverage lineup at Starbucks stores in the U.S. and Canada.

“We know our customers are looking for even more options in cold coffee,” said Yoke Wong from Starbucks beverage development team. “Although we’ve offered iced and blended versions of our holiday espresso beverages before, this is our first time creating a cold coffee holiday beverage.”

The beverage starts with Starbucks Nariño 70 Cold Brew coffee, which is slow-steeped for 20 hours. The cold brew is then spiced with the flavors of cinnamon, anise, nutmeg and vanilla, and finished with a float of house-made sweet cream.

“The spices complement the cold brew and bring out the cocoa notes in the coffee,” Wong said. “It’s a flavor reminiscent of the holiday season.”

The beverage is the latest addition to Starbucks cold craft portfolio of beverages, following the successful launch of Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Brew and Nitro Cold Brew over the summer.

New autumn espresso beverage available in Starbucks® stores across US and Canada

SEATTLE, 2015-9-23 — /EPR Retail News/ — Starbucks introduces its first new autumn espresso beverage in four years – Toasted Graham Latte. The new handcrafted beverage will be available in Starbucks® stores across the United States and Canada beginning today (Sept. 23).

When Starbucks beverage R&D manager Yoke Wong set out to create the new beverage, she found inspiration in an unusual place.

“I thought about the back-to-school season and looked at the latest food and beverage trends,” said Wong. “What I found to be quite popular in the U.S. is the taste of cereal milk, the delicious leftovers in your breakfast bowl.”

Intrigued by this trend, Wong soaked graham crackers in milk to replicate the taste of cereal and learn more about the milk’s texture. For additional insight, she explored the culinary world in Europe. “I learned that many Italian gelato shops serve a flavor called Fior di Latte, which means the ‘flower of milk,'” said Wong. “It’s like a smooth vanilla crème and is very popular.”

With both of these distinctive flavors in mind, Wong began a journey to develop Toasted Graham Latte, considering between 20 and 30 beverage concepts.

“I knew I was getting close to the final recipe when I began to notice that one of the samples was the favorite time and time again,” she said. “Based on all of the feedback we received, we were able to create a beverage that conjures up feelings of fall, comfort and warmth.” The Toasted Graham Latte is an espresso beverage with steamed milk, flavors of graham and sweet cream and finished with a sprinkling of cinnamon graham crumbles.

Jimmy Balch, senior designer for store promotions at Starbucks, was asked to create a paper cup for those who relish the autumn season.

“While there are many customers who want to hold onto summer, there are others who can’t wait for it to end,” he said. “We wanted to give those who celebrate fall something special.”

Balch began to sketch fall symbols found in nature like leaves, berries, pumpkins and pine cones. When he had a desired creative direction, he passed the cup to Victor Melendez, senior packaging designer, who has a distinctive style and created illustrations for this year’s Anniversary Blend coffee bag as well.

“I took the original concepts and refined them through pen and ink drawings,” said Melendez.

“We incorporated hints of color, but allowed the illustration to be the focus. We wanted the colors on the cup to take a secondary role, and let the illustrations take the lead,” Balch added.

After assembling the illustrations on the paper cup, and receiving feedback from designers and Starbucks leadership, Melendez and Balch had the final version. Customers will be able to enjoy their Toasted Graham Latte and any other hot beverage in the fall-inspired paper cup through the end of October or while supplies last.

To mark the arrival of fall with the autumnal equinox today, Starbucks stores will be sampling Toasted Graham Latte and seasonal bakery favorites. Partners will also be wearing fall-inspired clothes such as flannel scarves and sweaters, and writing customer beverage orders and names with orange markers in honor of the occasion.
