S Group invites ideas on renewing the Kera district in Espoo, Finland

HELSINKI, FINLAND, 2015-10-8 — /EPR Retail News/ — S Group is inviting ideas people, start-ups, students and researchers to brainstorm and create visions for renewing the Kera district in Espoo. S Group’s logistics centre will be relocated from Kera to another location in the next few years, which means that the industrial area can be reclassified as a residential area.

The vision is to make Kera a “20-minute district”. The goal is that Kera residents would be able to reach anywhere in Espoo, as well as the centre of Helsinki, in 20 minutes without having to use their own cars.

Brainstorming based on circular economy

A particular challenge in the contest is to redefine the old industrial area as a lively, inspiring residential area. The goal is to find sustainable, practical, innovative and smart solutions that will make Kera a pleasant, lively district. The purpose is to brainstorm ideas for the district’s different developmental stages and specify how to make the changes in an interesting way, as well as the kinds of services that could be implemented in the district, starting from the initial scenario all the way to executing the vision for the Kera district.

According to the principles of the circular economy, it is possible to reuse and recycle the S Group logistics centre’s existing structures, the district’s industrial buildings and related demolition and waste material in future urban development.

The only Finnish-based location in the challenge

The Kera district is the only project in Finland selected by Nordic Innovation (working under the auspices of the Nordic Council of Ministers) in the Nordic Built Cities Challenge.  The competition includes five other Nordic projects. Nordic Built Cities is one of the Council’s flagship projects.

The challenge is about sustainability, being smart, lively, engaging in Nordic cooperation, and having export potential. The best four ideas related to the Kera district will each receive around €30,000 in further development funding. The best four teams will also get to compete at the Nordic level in the Nordic Built Cities Challenge Awards, with other top teams.

The first stage of the challenge is from 7 October to 17 December 2015.

Argos revolutionises online shopping by becoming the first retailer to offer same-day home delivery across the UK

Milton Keynes, UK, 2015-10-8 — /EPR Retail News/ — Argos is revolutionising online shopping by becoming the first retailer to offer same-day store collection, and same-day home delivery, for nearly 20,000 products across the UK.

The new service is called Fast Track. Customers can see Fast Track items clearly online, purchase them, and choose to either collect them from a local store or schedule a same-day or next-day delivery slot.

Customers choosing Fast Track Collection can collect their products from 800 Argos store locations nationwide, at specially marked Fast Track Collection counters, from Argos colleagues who will have the products in customers’ hands within 60 seconds. Fast Track Collection is free.

Customers choosing Fast Track Delivery can select from four convenient home delivery slots: 7am-10am, 10am-1pm, 2pm-6pm and 7pm-10pm, seven days a week including Sunday. Customers can order by 6pm to have an item delivered by 10pm the same day, or schedule a convenient time on the next day or future days. The delivery fee is only £3.95.

Like the Argos team members serving Fast Track Collection customers in-store, Fast Track Delivery drivers are Argos employees, specially hired and trained and working in local stores around the country.  Argos has created new jobs for 3,300 drivers, who will operate the 800 liveried Argos vans in streets up and down the UK this Christmas season. Up to 1,000 drivers are currently being recruited for the busy upcoming Christmas season.

Fast Track Collection and Fast Track Delivery are possible because of behind the scenes improvements Argos has been making during the past two years to its stocking, distribution and digital systems, such as the ‘hub & spoke’ stocking model it deployed in stores last year.  Fast Track has been in testing for several months and customer reaction to the new home delivery service in particular was very positive.  One customer tweeted: “…the fact that Argos do same day delivery on a Sunday makes me so happy.” Another said she found the service “amazing” when her TV broke at 5pm and she was watching her new one by 8.30pm the same day.

John Walden, Chief Executive, Home Retail Group (parent company of Argos) said: “As customers increasingly shop from online and mobile shopping channels, they are increasingly sensitive to the speed and cost of obtaining their products.  Argos has always been known for convenience, and is uniquely positioned with its national network of stores and distribution centres to provide customers with the best options to fulfil their digital orders.  We are pleased to introduce Fast Track Collection and Fast Track Delivery, which represents the fastest, cheapest and most convenient way for customers to purchase their goods online.  We hope Fast Track will help UK consumers this Christmas and make their seasonal shopping speedier and easier than ever before.”

Bryan Roberts, Senior Vice-President & Knowledge officer for EMEA at Kantar Retail, said:

“Delivery has emerged as one of the key battlegrounds for UK retailers, as customers increasingly look for multiple delivery slots that allow them to shop how and when they want on the same day.  In terms of customers being able to order online as late as 6pm and receive products on their doorstep that evening, Argos is showing its rivals a clean pair of heels with this new speedy nationwide service.  While having the right offer at the right price will be as crucial as ever this Christmas, there will also be a sprint finish on the nation’s roads to deliver the goods the same or next day.”

Interested applicants for customer fulfilment drivers or seasonal jobs in Argos stores should apply as soon as possible at www.argoscareers.com

Argos was the first to launch click & collect 15 years ago and prior to that led the way with a UK-wide home delivery service in 1999.

Hublot inaugurates second manufacturing building at its production center in Nyon, Switzerland

Nyon, Switzerland, 2015-10-8 — /EPR Retail News/ — On September 29, 2015, Hublot inaugurated a second manufacturing building at its production center in Nyon, Switzerland. The new building enables Hublot to increase production capacity to meet growing demand for its watches with the installation of over 100 new workstations.

After a year and a half of work, Hublot has completed the expansion of its manufacture. The new 8,000-square-meter workspace will mainly be used to produce components for Manufacture movements and watch cases, enabling the brand to boost production capacity and accommodate the rapid and growing demand for its watches.

In addition to creating 100 new workstations over the next five years, the facility enables reorganization of space at the site. Assembly workshops and the Innovations, Research & Development department will take over more space in the current building.  The new building, linked directly to “Hublot 1” by a walkway, will produce cases and carbon fiber components, and also house the setting unit, consolidating all production right at the site.

H&M highlights factors on Bangladesh Accord on fire and building safety

STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN, 2015-10-8 — /EPR Retail News/ — H&M believes that the Bangladesh Accord on Fire and Building Safety is an important initiative that is making the textile industry in Bangladesh safer. Any delay of the work of the Bangladesh Accord on fire and building safety is therefore of great concern to us. However, we do not recognize ourselves in the picture given in the report. There are several factors that we would like to highlight.

First, we are only producing in factories that meet the Accord requirements for operation and we have taken the required measurements. Secondly, fire exits are one of the most fundamental requirements for a supplier in order to be allowed to produce for H&M. Thirdly, our own internal follow-up data shows that where H&M is lead-brand, almost 60 percent of the remediation work is completed and we see good progress. Also, we have worked out solutions for all financial support requests together with our suppliers and are cooperating closely with them to remediate according to corrective and tailor-made action plans. As our presence in Bangladesh is long-term, it contributes not only financially to the individual factory, but also to the development of the textile industry as well as to the Bangladeshi community as a whole.

However, it is correct that we and the other buyers within the Accord are experiencing some delays to work being carried out to initial timelines. For example, there have been problems with deliveries of new upgraded fire doors and sprinklers due to import delays since none of these products are available in Bangladesh.  Delays are also due to heavy workload for the Accord inspection experts dealing with these complex issues. This has also resulted in delayed updates of the information publicly available on the Accord website. For us, it is of utmost importance that measures taken are according to the high quality standards agreed between the Bangladesh Government and the Accord/Alliance.

We have a very active role within the Accord and are now looking at how we, together with the other buyers and global unions, can push the work forward. We have worked with fire and building safety for many years and we were the first company to sign the Accord. We have a staff of nearly 600 in Bangladesh, who work full time on all aspects of production including the Accord. We will continue our long-term investment by fully supporting our suppliers in improving and upgrading their production facilities to safer and higher international standards as well as their management capabilities, allowing them to become competitive in a sustainable way.
