She further states each cartridge prints the same number of pages as the oil-based versions and does no harm to the printer itself. “Buyers can now demand a quality product AND a green product. They can have it both ways,” Overhaug claims.

Scottish online cosmetics company Beauty Counter Direct have announced an impressive 43% like-on-like increase in sales

Defying the economic downturn, Beauty Counter Direct’s December figures prove that beauty products and cosmetics are increasingly popular. The so-called, ‘lipstick effect’, first evident during the Great Depression 1929-1933 when lipstick sales rocketed 25%, should perhaps be renamed the ‘cosmetics effect’ as sales increase across the board. In the pre-Christmas period Beauty Counter Direct’s skin care product sales increased by 65%, cosmetics by 58% and fragrances were up by 17%. During the same period, mascara sales more than doubled.

Julie Wood, Managing Director of Beauty Counter Direct says: “Our sales prove that people like to keep up appearances despite the dismal outlook. Treating yourself to less expensive luxuries has never been so popular. Customers want low cost and high impact.”

Sales figures from one of the world’s biggest cosmetics companies, L’Oreal, endorse this theory. Their sales were up 5.3% in the first half of the year.

RAB Capital analyst Dhaval Joshi explains the increase: “The evidence shows that when budgets are squeezed people simply substitute large extravagances for small luxuries.” Wood backs up this comment: “Our customers are buying larger volumes of cheaper products.”

Majority Of Couples Cutting Back On Wedding Expenses Due To Economic Downturn

“Location, location, location” as the saying goes, and roughly a quarter (25%) are having the reception at a hotel, and 10% have opted to host their nuptials at a country club. About 6% of couples selected a destination wedding, while a majority (55%) reported they are finding another type of venue to rent for the event and reception.

Size matters for this year’s brides, and by that we mean the size of the wedding party. Most couples (48%) will have between 5 to 8 people, while 37% of respondents have 9 or more bridesmaids and attendants. The trend seems to lean toward larger, more inclusive wedding parties, which leads us to the number of invited guests. Nearly 40% report they will have a guest count of more than 200 and 14% say their total guest count is under 100. A good 34% are inviting 100 to 150 guests.

As for cutting costs and wedding budgets, 68% said they’ve lowered their budgets by $1,000 or less. However, the small cuts they are making may not have a big impact on the actual wedding. Items that brides generally won’t skimp on are wedding gowns, photography and wedding rings.

When asked more specifically about what they would and would not change, most are not significantly altering music, location, reception style, or dress. Instead, they are more likely to adjust the cost of invitations, wedding favors, bridal accessories and gifts for the bridal party (combined, 46% of respondents said they would make changes in these 3 areas).

I reasoned that present buying and giving should be an enjoyable and rewarding experience for everyone involved, yet it clearly wasn’t something that the guys were enjoying one bit. 

First I looked at other websites purporting to sell a similar dream but they were very predictable and sold chocolates and the kind of black and red lingerie that blokes think women like but actually women don’t want to be seen dead in. And slowly I realised there was a niche here that was ripe for the picking. 

So I set up the website I Chose It (www.ichoseit.co.uk), with my brother Nigel. I ran everything past him to get a male point of view, and together we came up with a selection of jewellery, bath products, candles, homeware, clothes and accessories. We sourced a lot of our products locally to our homes in Sussex and it felt good to support small businesses.

In choosing our gifts, I looked for individual luxury items that women would love to wear, to put in their homes or to use on a daily basis. In short wonderful Gifts for Women
