Dixons Carphone appoints Alex Baldock as Group Chief Executive

LONDON, 2018-Jan-23 — /EPR Retail News/ — Dixons Carphone plc announces the appointment of Alex Baldock as Group Chief Executive from April 2018, to succeed Sebastian James who has informed the board of his decision to step down around the end of the financial year after six years in the role. Sebastian will be joining Walgreens Boots Alliance later this year.

Alex Baldock is currently Group Chief Executive of Shop Direct plc, the UK’s second largest pure-play online retailer, a position which he has held since 2012.

Ian Livingston, Chairman of Dixons Carphone plc, said:

“Seb has made an outstanding contribution to both the creation and success of Dixons Carphone. It is a much stronger company today than when he became CEO of Dixons Retail in 2012 with revenue, profit and customer satisfaction all substantially higher. The Group is now the market leader in eight countries.”

“On behalf of the Board and all our colleagues, I would like to thank Seb for all that he has done over the past six years as CEO of first Dixons Retail and now Dixons Carphone. We wish him every success in his new role.”

“The Board and I are delighted to welcome Alex Baldock to the Group. He has an outstanding track record in leading large, complex consumer-facing businesses. He’s led Shop Direct through one of UK Retail’s fastest, most far-reaching and most successful digital transformations, delivering five consecutive years of record financial performance, with strongly rising sales and an almost tenfold increase in profits.

“We wanted Alex for his strategic clarity, relentless execution and his ability to inspire people to get behind him at every step. We look forward to Alex bringing that leadership to the Group as we build on our market-leading positions.”

Sebastian James said:

“It has been an enormous privilege to lead this business and to work with such passionate and committed colleagues over the last few years. Together, I think that we can be very proud of the profound transformation that we have seen in Dixons Carphone and the sound footing, customer affection, and place in the world that it now enjoys. I offer my most sincere thanks to Ian, the Board and my colleagues for their support and friendship over these years. I will be very sad to leave, tempered only by the fact that I know that Alex will do a terrific job of leading the company and driving it on to
new heights.”

Alex Baldock said:

“I can’t wait to get started at Dixons Carphone. Seb and the team have achieved an extraordinary amount, not least reinforcing Dixons Carphone’s position as a leading electrical and mobile retailer in Europe at a time of wrenching change. It’s with great excitement that I look forward to getting to know the people and the customers at Dixons Carphone, and to building on these achievements. Dixons Carphone is exceptionally well-placed to help customers navigate the complex, fast-changing world of technology and mobile, and I feel privileged that Ian and the Board have asked me to lead the Group to make the most of that opportunity.”

Shop Direct raised £440,000 for Claire House’s new site in Liverpool

Liverpool,UK, 2017-Nov-01 — /EPR Retail News/ — Shop Direct has raised £440,000 in just 12 months to digitally equip Claire House’s new site, which will support hundreds of seriously and terminally ill children in Liverpool and the wider North West.

In September 2016, the 4,700-strong team at Shop Direct voted for Claire House Children’s Hospice as its charitable partner of the year for 2016/17. The charity helps seriously ill children live life to the full by creating wonderful experiences and bringing a sense of normality to family life.

Since then, colleagues across the etail giant’s sites in Liverpool and Manchester have undertaken a variety of fundraising activities including a charity ball for over 1,000 people, mountain climbing, fun days, worldwide marathons, skydiving, cycling and a digital dog show.

Shop Direct has also worked with Claire House to form a new innovation board, which is helping the charity to define what a world class digital hospice is and deliver the plans, which will create a lasting legacy for the North West.

The corporate partnership, which is Claire House’s biggest to date, has helped the charity put in place futureproof digital infrastructure like cabling, Wi-Fi and server technology at its new site located in the West Derby area of Liverpool. In addition, Claire House is modernising paper-based systems so its teams can deliver a more personalised service while caring for children in their own homes, as well as at the site.

The team at Shop Direct is also helping to fund and design an interactive multi-media suite for use by the children and families who visit the centre. It will include cutting-edge technology and innovative sensory treatments.

Alex Baldock, group CEO at Shop Direct, said: “We’re passionate about the North West and helping our local communities, but even we were blown away by the huge, huge difference Claire House makes in the lives of children and their families. It’s a charity that’s close to a lot of our colleagues’ hearts, and we were all delighted to support them.

“Everyone at Shop Direct has got behind Claire House in some style; raising more than we’ve ever raised before in a charity partnership and smashing our original £400,000 target. Our colleagues’ ambition and commitment has been inspirational; from the person who is completing seven marathons to the colleague who got a Claire House tattoo.

“We’re delighted that the money we’ve raised will help to transform the charity’s new site, making a massive difference to children and their families’ for years to come. We can’t wait for the next stage of our partnership, which will see us work together on a cutting-edge multimedia suite.”

David Pastor, Chief Executive at Claire House, commented: “Not only has this been Claire House’s largest corporate partnership, it’s been one of our most successful, with both organisations working closely together on a common goal; to support the children and families we care for.

“We’re so grateful to everyone at Shop Direct who have got behind our cause so wholeheartedly and really helped us kick start our journey to reaching every family that needs us.”

Retail Week Awards 2017: Shop Direct wins OC&C pureplay etailer of the year three times in a row ; CEO Alex Baldock crowned Clarity retail leader of the year

Liverpool,UK, 2017-Mar-13 — /EPR Retail News/ — Shop Direct last night (9 March 2017) became the first company to win the OC&C pureplay etailer of the year three times in a row at the Retail Week Awards 2017, the industry’s equivalent of the Oscars.

CEO Alex Baldock was also crowned the Clarity retail leader of the year to cap a great night for the UK’s second largest pureplay, which counts Very.co.uk and Littlewoods.com amongst its digital department store brands.

The Retail Week Awards 2017, which attracted over 1,600 attendees from across the industry, were judged by a panel of sector heavyweights including leaders from Debenhams, IKEA and Karen Millen.

They praised the company for doing ‘pioneering things’ and entering the digital era ‘in style, going further than almost any business’ as it scooped the award for best pureplay.

The judges also celebrated Baldock for ‘the tough choices’ he has made during Shop Direct’s transformation as he picked up the award for retail leader.

Alex Baldock said: “To have the strong, innovative and successful business we’re building recognised by our peers is a massive compliment.

“And to win best pureplay etailer for the third time in a row shows we’re becoming the world class digital retailer we’re striving to be.

“I’m honoured to be recognised as leader of the year, but it’s the strength of our entire team that’s driven our success. This is our award.

“We’ve had another fantastic 12 months, but we’ve only scratched the surface of what’s possible.

“Over the next 12 months, AI will start to change the game for us, from personalisation through to credit; V by Very will become a £200m brand, and we’re making a big investment in building a digital workplace fit for the future.

“It all adds up to another year of growth and innovation – and we can’t wait for what’s next.”

Our investments in AI will create one of the most personalised online shopping experiences

  • Working with IBM Watson, we’ll introduce an AI-fuelled CUI platform, building on the success of Very Assistant – allowing customers to ask questions in their own words within a chat environment, with the AI technology providing the answers they are looking for
  • Our fully automated customer management engine will draw on the power of AI and machine learning to automatically intervene in individual customer journeys at the right time, in the right way, with the right offer – whether it be via email, push notification or on-site communication
  • We are also applying AI to our credit decisioning capabilities, meaning even faster, more personalised outcomes for our customers, and even better credit decisions and risk discipline for our business

Alex Baldock, CEO at Shop Direct, said:

“We helped millions of families afford the brands they wanted this Christmas. It’s what makes us special and gave us another record festive period.

“Shoppers chose convenience; being able to shop via smartphone was top of their Christmas lists. Most of the growth in retail is coming from online, and the growth in online is coming from mobile. We continue to put mobile first – and it paid off this Christmas.

“Our customers don’t want to feel like one of the crowd; they expect a unique experience. It’s what we gave them before, during and after they shopped this Christmas. Now, we’re using the power of AI to take personalisation to the next level.

“Personal shoppers shouldn’t be the preserve of just a few, or for just special occasions. Over the coming year, we intend to start democratising this service, like we have with famous brands through our credit offering.

“Etailers have already overtaken stores when it comes to convenience. Now AI-fuelled technology like chatbots and virtual reality has the potential to leave bricks and mortar behind in offering the best personal service. We believe it’s the next big shift in retail and financial services, and we plan to be at the vanguard.

“We know the market will be tough in 2017; we’ve still got a lot of work to do and we’re nowhere near the full potential of this business. But we’re confident that by continuing to invest in what makes us special, we’ll deliver another record year of sales and profit in 2017.”

Shop Direct’s charity ball raised £150,000 to support development of Claire House Children’s Hospice Liverpool site

Liverpool,UK, 2016-Dec-13 — /EPR Retail News/ — Shop Direct, which operates retail brands including Very.co.uk and Littlewoods.com, raised £150,000 at its fourth biennial charity ball, which this year was a disco extravaganza.

Funds raised from the event will go towards helping Claire House Children’s Hospice to begin developing a world class, digitally-enabled hospice in Liverpool.

The ball, which was held on Friday 9 December at the Liverpool Exhibition Centre, saw 1,000 guests enjoy a spectacular evening of entertainment. They danced the night away and got lost in the music of disco queens Sister Sledge, as well as ‘Rivers of Babylon’ singers Boney M.

Guests also bid to win a selection of coveted items and experiences, with lots including a three day charter aboard a luxury yacht for 11 people, starting in Palma, Majorca, and VIP hospitality for 10 people to attend Liverpool FC vs Arsenal in a private box, which fetched £8,500 and £10,000 respectively.

Celebrities including the UK’s favourite interior designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, TV personality and DJ Kate Lawler, model Vogue Williams, Hollyoaks actresses Sophie Porley and Amanda Clapman, and TOWIE stars Jessica Wright and Lydia and Debbie Bright ensured it was a star-studded night. The evening was expertly hosted by Littlewoods.com brand ambassador, Myleene Klass.

Money raised from the event will go to Shop Direct’s 2016/17 charity partner, Claire House Children’s Hospice.

Shop Direct has committed to raising £400,000 for the charity through colleague activities and events, as well as providing industry-leading knowledge to help Claire House begin the development of a world class, digitally-enabled hospice in Liverpool. The new site will support the charity’s existing Wirral hospice, which currently helps over 200 children and their families each year.

The partnership will help Claire House put in place futureproof digital infrastructure at the new site, and fund and design an interactive multi-media suite for use by the children and families who visit. Shop Direct will also form a new innovation board with Claire House, which will help define what the new hospice will look like.

Alex Baldock, CEO at Shop Direct, said: “It was a fantastic night and we were blown away by the huge generosity of our guests – we can’t thank them enough. This money will make a massive difference to the way Claire House helps seriously and terminally ill children in the North West in the years to come.

“I also want to say a big thank you to our generous sponsors, partners, colleagues and volunteers for donating a wonderful selection of prizes, for their help on the night, and for their continued support of Shop Direct and Claire House.”

David Pastor, CEO at Claire House, commented: “We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has made such amazing donations. This money will help us reach more children in the North West who desperately need our help.

“We are also very excited that our partnership with Shop Direct not only allows us to raise money but also to take advantage of their digital expertise to help us deliver the best in care and support, now and in the future, to the hundreds of families who depend on us.”

Shop Direct to support the development of a new digital app for Alder Hey Children’s Hospital

Shop Direct to support the development of a new digital app for Alder Hey Children’s Hospital

Liverpool,UK, 2016-Oct-18 — /EPR Retail News/ — Colleagues at Shop Direct have raised £210,000 in just 12 months to support the development of a new digital app for Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.

In September 2015, the 4,700-strong team at Shop Direct voted for Alder Hey Children’s Charity as its charitable partner of the year for 2015/16. Since then, colleagues across the etail giant’s sites in Liverpool and Manchester have undertaken a variety of fundraising activities, from climbing mountains, singing, running, cycling, abseiling, playing ‘beat the goalie’ and completing their own version of The Biggest Loser, smashing their initial target of £200,000.

Members of Shop Direct’s multi-award winning ecommerce team have also been working with Alder Hey’s innovation team to develop the app – the first of its kind in the country – providing expert insight and advice on design, development and personalization. The shared vision of the Alder Hey and Shop Direct teams is to revolutionize the patient experience by harnessing the power of consumer technology to help patients be better informed, calmer, more entertained and, as a result, healthier.

ICE, a Wirral-based behaviour change organization, has now begun work to develop the app, which will include a digital map enabling patients to explore and familiarize themselves with the hospital and their ward before they visit the hospital. Users will be able to find out everything they need to know before their visit, from where to park to what to pack and what their rooms will look like. The app will also feature games, providing entertainment and much-needed distraction for patients to reduce anxiety while they wait. A rewards scheme will also be used to encourage healthy lifestyle choices.

Ultimately, Alder Hey’s aim for the digital hospital programme is to further develop the app and join all of this to a secure patient information system, which will hold key information about the patient, such as their likes, dislikes and specific needs. This will remove the need for families to repeatedly provide the same information at every visit and ensure that they receive a more personalised service. The app is expected to launch in 2017.

Alex Baldock, group CEO at Shop Direct, said: “Alder Hey is a charity that’s been close to our hearts at Shop Direct for a long time and I was delighted when our colleagues voted last year to support the development of the Digital Alder Hey app. We’re proud of our heritage in the North West and it was important to us to select a charity that has a significant impact in our local communities. Alder Hey does that and then some.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the effort everyone at Shop Direct has put in to raise £210,000 over the last 12 months. Our colleagues’ ambition, passion and commitment has surpassed even our own expectations. As a team, we’re pleased that we’ve also been able to provide digital skills and expertise to help Alder Hey develop the app and get the project off the ground. We look forward to continuing our strategic partnership with Alder Hey on this important project, which will make such a difference to so many children and families across the North West, and to seeing the final product next year.”

Iain Hennessey, consultant paediatric surgeon and clinical lead for innovation at Alder Hey, said: “Shop Direct has in common with Alder Hey a drive to innovate and do things differently, which has made them the perfect partner for us in developing our digital hospital vision. Together, we’ve been exploring how we can apply Shop Direct’s digital retail expertise to the hospital environment to create our own online ‘shop front’ for Alder Hey. We’ve also been overwhelmed by the engagement of the entire Shop Direct team in smashing their £200,000 target for our children’s charity, which will go such a long way to enable us to make the Digital Alder Hey app a reality.

“Thank you to everyone at Shop Direct from all of us at Alder Hey. We couldn’t have achieved what we have without your expert advice and fundraising. You are our heroes.”

VeryExclusive.co.uk launches 25 brands of men’s clothing, footwear and accessories for autumn winter 2016

Liverpool,UK, 2016-Sep-21 — /EPR Retail News/ — VeryExclusive.co.uk, Shop Direct’s online luxury fashion retailer, has today (September 20, 2016) gone live with its premium menswear offer.

The etailer has launched men’s clothing, footwear and accessories for autumn winter 2016 with 25 brands, including the likes of Kenzo, Whistles, PS by Paul Smith, Hackett and Vivienne Westwood.

In what will be a first for the accessible luxury brand, VeryExclusive.co.uk is also close to signing up its debut concession partner.

Sarah Curran, managing director of VeryExclusive.co.uk, said: “We’re delighted to be launching our menswear offer with such a covetable range of brands. The appeal of VeryExclusive.co.uk is that we give women access to brands they may not otherwise be able to shop. And we know from months of market research that there’s an aspirational male customer who is crying out for us to do the same across men’s clothing, footwear and accessories.

“We’re also excited to be in advanced talks with brands keen to work with us on a concession model. Alongside our wholesale proposition, we see this as a huge opportunity. It will allow us to offer our customers greater width of range, including top tier products. And for the brands themselves, it provides the ability to really differentiate their product range. It’s a complete win-win and we look forward to announcing our first concession brand very soon.”

VeryExclusive.co.uk’s menswear offer will target 26 to 45 year-old aspirational males, a high number of whom already shop with Shop Direct’s flagship brand, Very.co.uk.

Menswear customers of VeryExclusive.co.uk will benefit from the etailer’s proven successful content strategy – offering magazine-style editorial, fashion advice and product recommendations. Customers will also be able to draw on Shop Direct’s credit offer, which includes ‘Take 3’, to buy premium menswear brands. Take 3 allows shoppers to spread the cost of their purchases across three monthly, interest-free payments. VeryExclusive.co.uk also offers a credit account with a representative APR of 18.9%.

Alex Baldock, group CEO at Shop Direct, said: “VeryExclusive.co.uk’s success is built on attracting the luxury brands our customers tell us they want to shop, personalising their end-to-end shopping experience, and making the pieces they love accessible via our unique range of ways to spread the cost.

“Launching menswear on VeryExclusive.co.uk will enable us to democratise luxury for men as well as women. Men want the option to buy into premium brands as much as women and this will bring some of their favourite labels within reach.

“For spring summer 2017, we’ll be upping our roster of menswear brands to 35 and look forward to seeing the reaction from our customers.”
