London, 2017-Nov-01 — /EPR Retail News/ — Leading British retailer, Debenhams is extending its global footprint with the opening of its first store in Australia today (24 October).

The store in Melbourne is the first site with franchise partner, Pepkor, part of the Steinhoff Group.

The store’s small-format layout – across two storeys and 3600sqm – is the first of its kind for Debenhams and is a notable shift away from the traditional department store format in Australia. The store features a unique mix of clothing and products from the retailer’s extensive portfolio of household British designer names including Jasper Conran, Julien Macdonald, Preen, Savannah Miller, Matthew Williamson and Jenny Packham. In-store services include style suite, beauty rooms and café.

Debenhams St Collins Lane opened yesterday and joins a portfolio of 243 Debenhams stores across 28 countries worldwide. The store will trade in line with CDB trading hours.

Kmart Lakelands is officially the 200th store to have been opened by the leading retailer across Australia and New Zealand. Noticeable updates including central self-served check outs, wider aisles for easy wheel chair and pram access, as well as bolder graphics for navigation and a convenient shopping experience.

Kmart Lakelands store manager Jacqui Craig alongside her all female management team, has had a large task of sorting through applications, having employed just over 130 team members with many transferring from other stores. Two of these team members include Jackie Clifton and Leila Afalzi, with years combined have been with the retail business for over 40 years – a remarkable asset to the Kmart Lakelands team.

The team members have gone through 9 weeks of intensive training in preparation for the opening, learning a variety of roles across the store to ensure team members are exposed to a variety of tasks and responsibilities whilst perfecting their perfecting their customer service skills.

Mrs Craig said the completion of this site will be a huge achievement for the whole Kmart team and she is so excited to welcome the community through the doors.

“We have received lots of positive feedback from the Halls Head and Rockingham community. The new store will provide the community with further shopping convenience for those who live locally and greater access to our everyday low prices,” Mrs Craig said.

Perth, Australia, 2017-Jun-22 — /EPR Retail News/ — Coles has created 115 new local jobs at Epping North with the unveiling of its milestone 800th supermarket at Aurora Village on Wednesday, 21 June.

Epping North was selected as the location for the milestone 800th supermarket in Australia after Coles’ 103 year history. In addition to the 115 new recruits, 25 team members will transfer from other Coles stores in the area, bringing the total team to 140.The new market-style supermarket will feature an in-store bakery with flatbread made daily, a continental delicatessen with a large selection of cheese and fresh seafood, and a meat counter with a slice-on-request service.

The new store will also feature a self-service olive bar, ‘Scoop and Weigh’ station and an extensive fresh produce area with fruit and vegetables displayed on ice.

Store Manager Ranjith Fernando is excited to introduce the store and its new features to local residents and support the local Epping North community.

“The whole team can’t wait to show off the new shopping experience to the local community. Our service will extend beyond the checkout, with the store committed to supporting a range of causes close to the hearts of customers and team members,” he said.

The team at Aurora Village will support the Epping North Scout Group by hosting activities and dinner at the Galada Community Centre and donating a trailer later this month, as well as supplying sport shirts for students at Harvest Home Primary School.

“As a store, we’re committed to being involved with the local community and working with Epping North Scout Group and Harvest Home Primary School are just two ways we’re getting involved. We look forward to being more involved with the local Epping North community throughout the year,” Ranjith said.

Australian Retailers Association: Retailers conducting business in Australia should pay their tax just like Australian retailers currently do

Wellington Parade, East Melbourne, 2017-Apr-24 — /EPR Retail News/ — The Australian Retailers Association (ARA) strongly supports the Government in closing the Low Value Threshold (LVT) loophole for the purchase of offshore tangible goods under $1000.

Russell Zimmerman, Executive Director of the ARA said they have been working with the Federal and State Governments to reduce the low value threshold and provide a level playing field for Australian retailers.

“This is a tax equity issue and internationally-based retailers should pay their fair share of tax,” Mr Zimmerman said.

“Retailers conducting business in Australia should pay their tax just like Australian retailers currently do.”

The ARA has said this GST has been a long time coming, expressing thanks to then Assistant Treasure Bill Shorten for his commencement of the process in 2011.

“Multiple jurisdictions are already introducing similar laws as this is a global tax issue,” Mr Zimmerman said.

“This new legislation will create a fairer tax system for Australian retailers by creating a level playing field against international competitors.”

This new model may not be perfect but the ARA believes that the proposed system is the best model at this point.

“Freight companies and credit card businesses should not be responsible for collecting this tax, the onus should fall on internationally-based businesses to collect it” Mr Zimmerman said.

“Australian retailers already collect this tax in Australia, therefore it is unnecessary to complicate this process and allow international retailers to continue to exploit this legislative loophole.”

“We already know that overseas retailers selling online have the capability of charging taxes as required by Australian law,” Mr Zimmerman said.

The ARA will be appearing as witnesses at the Senate Economics Legislation hearings this Friday 21 April to reiterate the importance of this GST.

“We strongly support this proposed GST model and will continue to work with the Government to resolve any implementation issues,” Mr Zimmerman said.

London, 2016-Sep-14 — /EPR Retail News/ — Debenhams is to extend its international store network with new sites in Australia and Gibraltar in the pipeline.

The Australian store, the first in the Southern Hemisphere, is planned to open in the prestigious St Collins Lane precinct in September 2017. The store will be the first site with franchise partner, Pepkor, part of the Steinhoff Group and will see the construction of 3,600sqm retail space over two levels.

Debenhams has also partnered with International Franchises Limited (IFL) to create two stores in Gibraltar taking over former BHS sites.

The Gibraltar stores will consist of a dedicated Homes store on Main Street, which will open September 2016 carrying collections by Debenhams’ Designers, Matthew Williamson, Julien MacDonald, Jasper Conran, John Rocha and Ben de Lisi. Redevelopment of a store in the International Commerce Centre will see a Christmas ‘pop up’ trade from late October 2016 until mid-January as modernisation also takes place. The site will open carrying the full department store offer in February 2017.

The partnership with IFL secures the jobs of all employees formerly working in the BHS stores and will also offer consumers in the region with unparalleled choice, value and quality from a host of credible brands.

LONDON, 2016-Jul-19 — /EPR Retail News/ — John Lewis has today announced it will have a physical presence in Australia for the first time by opening shop-in-shops within six branches of leading Australian department store Myer.

The first shop-in-shop will open before Christmas 2016 in Myer’s newly refurbished Warringah store in the outskirts of Sydney. This will be followed by additional openings in Melbourne, Perth, Bondi, Chadstone, and Myer’s flagship store in Sydney in February 2017.

The John Lewis departments will be between 600 sq ft and 850 sq ft in size and customers will be able to shop an exclusive assortment incorporating the best of John Lewis’s own brand home and lifestyle products across bed, bath, and living. Once open, John Lewis will have 30 shop-in-shops worldwide.

Today’s announcement is coupled with the news that John Lewis has extended the number of countries it delivers to through johnlewis.com from 33 to 40. For the first time, customers will be able to order the best of John Lewis fashion and homewares delivered via online to countries including; Hong Kong, South Korea, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Switzerland, The Philippines and Malaysia. Furthermore, customers can now pay in ten additional currencies.

In the past twelve months, John Lewis’s online international traffic has increased by 15% and online international sales grown by 50%.

Retail Product Search And Store Locator iPhone app Now Available Through Lasoo

Lasoo.com.au has launched its pre-shopping iPhone app, allowing users of the popular phone to search across catalogues, products, retailers and brands from leading retailers while they’re out and about.

The app brings the full search and browse functionality of the Lasoo.com.au website directly to the iPhone. Using the iPhone’s integrated GPS functionality, users can search across retail products or browse catalogues that are available in whatever area they happen to be. Products appear with a price, description and an expandable image.

What’s more, once the user has found something they want to buy, the Lasoo store locator uses the phone’s GPS to direct them to the nearest shop, complete with a map, contact details and opening hours.

The Lasoo.com.au iPhone app has offers from many of Australia’s leading retailers, including Target, BIG W, Coles, Dick Smith, Myer, Toys R Us, ALDI, Officeworks, Borders, Repco, IKEA and many more.
