NRF: imports could set new record as merchants enter back-to-school season and begin to stock up for the holiday season

WASHINGTON, 2017-Jul-11 — /EPR Retail News/ — July and August should be two of the busiest months ever seen for imports at the nation’s major retail container ports, possibly setting a new record as merchants enter the back-to-school season and begin to stock up for the holiday season that will follow, according to the monthly Global Port Tracker report released today (July 10, 2017) by the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates.

“We’re expecting retailers to import some of the largest volumes of merchandise ever,” NRF Vice President for Supply Chain and Customs Policy Jonathan Gold said. “That’s a good indicator of what could be ahead for consumer demand and retail sales, and it’s a sign that retail is going strong despite what you might read in the headlines.”

Ports covered by Global Port Tracker handled 1.72 million Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units in May, the latest month for which after-the-fact numbers are available. That was up 7.3 percent from April and up 6.2 percent from May 2016. One TEU is one 20-foot-long cargo container or its equivalent.

June was estimated at 1.66 million TEU, up 5.3 percent from the same time last year. July is forecast at 1.71 million TEU, up 5.1 percent from last year; August at 1.75 million TEU, up 2.2 percent; September at 1.66 million TEU, up 4.3 percent; October at 1.71 million TEU, up 2.2 percent, and November at 1.6 million TEU, down 2.7 percent from last year.

The August figure would be the highest monthly volume recorded since NRF began tracking imports in 2000, topping the 1.73 million TEU seen in March 2015. The 1.7 million-plus numbers seen in May, July, August and October represent four of the six busiest months in the report’s history.

The first half of 2017 is expected to total 9.63 million TEU, up 7.1 percent from the first half of 2016. Cargo volume for 2016 totaled 18.8 million TEU, up 3.1 percent from 2015, which had grown 5.4 percent from 2014.

NRF has forecast that 2017 retail sales – excluding automobiles, gasoline and restaurants – will increase between 3.7 and 4.2 percent over 2016, driven by job and income growth coupled with low debt. Cargo volume does not correlate directly with sales because only the number of containers is counted, not the value of the cargo inside, but nonetheless provides a barometer of retailers’ expectations.

Hackett Associates Founder Ben Hackett, an internationally known economist who prepares Global Port Tracker for NRF, said the increases in imports have come despite threats by the Trump administration to impose new limits on international trade.

“Some actions to date appear to have alienated traditional allies and are causing them to work more closely together, leaving the United States on the sidelines,” Hackett wrote in his monthly editorial comment in the report. “ ‘America First’ may well result in protectionist actions that will cut the United States off from the benefits of the global value chain and economic growth for U.S. importers and exporters.”

Global Port Tracker, which is produced for NRF by the consulting firm Hackett Associates, covers the U.S. ports of Los Angeles/Long Beach, Oakland, Seattle and Tacoma on the West Coast; New York/New Jersey, Hampton Roads, Charleston, Savannah, Port Everglades and Miami on the East Coast, and Houston on the Gulf Coast. The report is free to NRF retail members, and subscription information is available at www.nrf.com/PortTracker or by calling (202) 783-7971. Subscription information for non-members can be found at www.globalporttracker.com.

NRF is the world’s largest retail trade association, representing discount and department stores, home goods and specialty stores, Main Street merchants, grocers, wholesalers, chain restaurants and Internet retailers from the United States and more than 45 countries. Retail is the nation’s largest private sector employer, supporting one in four U.S. jobs – 42 million working Americans. Contributing $2.6 trillion to annual GDP, retail is a daily barometer for the nation’s economy. NRF.com

USDA issues food safety tips this back-to-school season

WASHINGTON, 2016-Aug-24 — /EPR Retail News/ — Back to school, back to the books, back in the saddle, or back in the car for those of us shuttling students to and from school. The new school year means its back to packing lunches and after school snacks for students, scouts, athletes, dancers, and all the other children who carry these items to and from home. One ‘back’ you do not want to reacquaint children with, however, is foodborne bacteria.

Bacteria that can cause foodborne illness, commonly known as food poisoning, grow rapidly at temperatures between 40 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit. In just two hours, these microorganisms can multiply to dangerous levels. To make sure lunches and snacks are safe for those you pack for, follow the USDA’s four steps to food safety: Clean – Separate – Cook – and Chill.

Packing Tips

  • If the lunch/snack contains perishable food items like luncheon meats, eggs, cheese, or yogurt, make sure to pack it with at least two cold sources.  Harmful bacteria multiply rapidly so perishable food transported without an ice source won’t stay safe long.
  • Frozen juice boxes or water can also be used as freezer packs. Freeze these items overnight and use with at least one other freezer pack.  By lunchtime, the liquids should be thawed and ready to drink.
  • Pack lunches containing perishable food in an insulated lunchbox or soft-sided lunch bag. Perishable food can be unsafe to eat by lunchtime if packed in a paper bag.
  • If packing a hot lunch, like soup, chili or stew, use an insulated container to keep it hot. Fill the container with boiling water, let stand for a few minutes, empty, and then put in the piping hot food. Tell children to keep the insulated container closed until lunchtime to keep the food hot – 140 °F or above.
  • If packing a child’s lunch the night before, parents should leave it in the refrigerator overnight. The meal will stay cold longer because everything will be refrigerator temperature when it is placed in the lunchbox.
  • If you’re responsible for packing snacks for the team, troop, or group, keep perishable foods in a cooler with ice or cold packs until snack time. Pack snacks in individual bags or containers, rather than having children share food from one serving dish.

Storage Tips

  • If possible, a child’s lunch should be stored in a refrigerator or cooler with ice upon arrival. Leave the lid of the lunchbox or bag open in the fridge so that cold air can better circulate and keep the food cold.

Eating and Disposal Tips

  • Pack disposable wipes for washing hands before and after eating.
  • After lunch, discard all leftover food, used food packaging, and paper bags. Do not reuse packaging because it could contaminate other food and cause foodborne illness.

Consumers can learn more about key food safety practices at Foodsafety.gov, by ‘following’ @USDAFoodSafety on Twitter, and by ‘liking’ Facebook.com/FoodSafety.gov. Consumers with questions about food safety, can call the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 1-888-MPHotline (1-888-674-6854) or chat live with a food safety specialist at AskKaren.gov, available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday, in English or Spanish.

If you have questions about storage times of food or beverages, download USDA’s new FoodKeeper application for Android and iOS devices. By helping users better understand food storage, the FoodKeeper empowers the public to choose storage methods that extend the shelf life of the food and beverages in their home. Better food storage should reduce food waste and reduce the frequency of users preparing and eating products that may be spoiled. The application was recently updated to include food storage information in both Spanish and Portuguese.

USDA has made some of the most significant updates made since the 1950s to the U.S. food safety system during the Obama Administration. New consumer-facing tools, like the FoodKeeper application, allow Americans to further guard themselves and their family against foodborne illnesses. Estimates show that the food safety standards implemented for meat and poultry will reduce illnesses by about 75,000 annually. More information about these efforts can be found on USDA’s Medium page at http://bit.ly/results-ch7.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., 2016-Aug-18 — /EPR Retail News/ — Meijer remains a destination for students’ back-to-school needs this season as families across the Midwest shift their focus from beaches and bonfires to paper and pencils in preparation for the fast-approaching school year.

Top-selling items this back-to-school season include notebooks, crayons, pencils and washable glue sticks. But the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based retailer also expects to sell the following classroom and dorm room essentials:

  • 3.8M pounds of paper – the same weight as 21 blue whales
  • 1.6M pounds of apples
  • 1M pairs of socks
  • 1M individual washcloths
  • 300,000 sticky notes
  • 175,000 sets of sheets

Sears starts the back-to-school season with two new private label apparel lines and a new “The Secret Life of Pets” app game

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill., 2016-Jul-28 — /EPR Retail News/ —  Sears has kicked off the back-to-school season with two new private label apparel lines, a new interactive in-store Sears app experience and shopping conveniences that make shopping easier, more fun with less time taken away from the last few days of summer.

With fresh, updated jeans perennially high on back-to-school shopping lists, Sears was inspired to expand its popular Roebuck & Co. line to boys and girls. Previously only available for men, the new Roebuck & Co. line includes denim, plus khaki cargo pants, long-sleeve tops and hoodies for boys, and leggings, tops and jackets for girls. Sears also introduced R1893 – a diverse women’s denim collection that features six fits and 52 washes.

“Back to school style is about having the confidence and swag to rock a logo-less tee and unbranded jacket. It’s being on trend and owning your style by making it yours. And you can seriously do that at Sears,” said Joelle Maher, president and chief member officer for Sears. “The new apparel lines will remind our members that denim is not only our heritage, it’s our passion. We believe in expertly constructed fits, rich vintage washes and serious attention to detail.”

  • R1893– With a name calling back to when the Sears Roebuck name first appeared, this new women’s collection takes denim to a new level. The collection features six fits – hi-rise jeggings, girlfriend, boot, skinny, jegging, and skinny flare – with higher cotton content and fits with varying stretch, making the jeans feel buttery, yet durable, and holding in the right places. Sizes are 2-18 and range in price from $39-$49.
  • Roebuck & Co.– This brand plays to Sears’ heritage and focuses on quality and value. The boys line has a classic collegiate feel, with tints of color and dry processing to give it a vintage look. The line comes in two fits – straight and slim straight, each in four washes – three denim washes and black. The girls line conveys a bohemian, free-spirited attitude and features three fits – jegging, legging jean, and boot cut, with stretch in each. The jegging comes in six washes, including black, grey, and two fashion colors (pink and turquoise); legging jeans have an elastic waistband and come in four washes/colors; and boot cut comes in two indigo washes. Denim sizes are 7-16 for girls and 8-20 for boys, with plus and husky sizing available, ranging in price from $24-$32.

Find Max and Win at Sears
Catching the wave of engaging, real-world app play, Sears teamed with the makers of the summer blockbuster “The Secret Life of Pets,” bringing the characters to the Sears app for a fun interactive game. To play the “Find Max” game, users launch the Sears app in-store then search for clues marked with a QR code. When all three QR codes are scanned, Max’s secret location is revealed, unlocking opportunities to enter sweepstakes, earn instant Shop Your Way points and more. Text “FINDMAX” to 73277 to download or update the Sears app.

Tying together Sears’ “Seriously Sears” back to school campaign is a series of digital videos that showcase Sears exciting new fashion looks for girls, boys and teens. Two spots viewable on Sears’ YouTube channel include “Chat” and “Soccer Moments.”

Staples and Katy Perry continue to help teachers across the country this back-to-school season

DALLAS, 2016-Jul-20 — /EPR Retail News/ — Staples, Inc. (NASDAQ: SPLS) announced that every Dallas teacher-led project posted on DonorsChoose.org received full funding as part of Staples’ $1 million donation to DonorsChoose.org, a charity that has funded more than 700,000 classroom projects for teachers and has positively affected more than 18 million U.S. students.

As part of the Staples for Students program, Staples and Katy Perry continue to help teachers across the country this back-to-school season. Staples funded the balance of every teacher-led project listed on DonorsChoose.org in Dallas. With a donation of $185,155, Staples helped 212 teachers make more happen in local classrooms, impacting more than 33,000 students in the community.

For example, Mrs. Hatcher at W. E. Greiner Exploratory Arts Academy will receive nine Kindle Fires for students in her Advancement Via Individual Determination program. Many students in this program will be the first in their families to attend college and don’t have internet access in their homes. The Kindle Fires will give her students instant internet access in class in order to access information such as college and career research projects, information for tutorials and taking virtual tours of college campuses.

Katy Perry said, “When I teamed up with Staples in 2014, I learned firsthand how desperately teachers need our support, with many of them having to dig into their own pockets to provide simple tools that we would expect to already be available in our classrooms. So when Staples approached me again this year, I jumped at the opportunity because I saw the lasting effect our collaboration had on DonorsChoose.org and thousands of teachers and students. I believe in education as the foundation for a great life, so I want to make sure that students across the country are inspired by their teachers and are afforded opportunity to realize their dreams.”

Driven by insight from the Education Market Association that an estimated 99.5 percent of all public school teachers’ use their own money to equip their classrooms, Staples takes great pride in helping to alleviate some of the pressure placed upon teachers.

“We’re overjoyed to partner with Katy Perry again to highlight the impact teachers have on our children’s lives and the need to support classrooms,” said Frank P. Bifulco, Jr., executive vice president global marketing, Staples. “Knowing that teachers spend an average of more than $400 per year from their own pockets to better prepare their classrooms, Staples is committed to supporting DonorsChoose.org in order to help teachers and contribute to a fulfilling learning experience.”

Katy Perry and Staples have also collaborated to create a public service announcement that is currently airing nationwide, further increasing visibility around the need to celebrate and support teachers.

“We’re so thankful for the continued support from Staples and its loyal customers, as well as Katy Perry, which has helped bring classroom dreams to life for countless teachers and students nationwide,” said Charles Best, founder of DonorsChoose.org. “Staples’ million dollar donation to DonorsChoose.org will go a long way to helping educators across the country, like those supported today in Dallas.”

Donate in Stores or Snap to Help Local Teachers
Katy Perry has been helping Staples raise awareness of how easy it is to support teachers by making a $1 donation either in stores or online at www.StaplesForStudents.com, with proceeds funding DonorsChoose.org projects. Beginning in early August, every customer who donates in-store will receive a free, exclusive Katy Perry pencil, while supplies last.

Dallas residents can secure more donations for their local classrooms by using the Staples for Students Snapchat Geofilter. Beginning July 19 and running through July 21, every use of the Staples for Students Snapchat Geofilter will trigger a $1 donation (up to $5,000) from Staples to be used towards Dallas classroom projects on DonorsChoose.org. The Geofilter will be available for use in the Staples store in the Preston Forest Shopping Center (located at 11700 Preston Road, STE 720) and in the surrounding area.

Sponsored Geofilters allow brands to take part in Snaps sent between friends on Snapchat – a platform used by over 100 million people each day. When Snapchatters take a Snap in a certain area, they’ll be able to see a Geofilter and use it to explain where, when and why they took the Snap.

Win a $50,000 Scholarship and Chance to Meet Katy Perry
Now through September 10, 2016, fans who spend $25 or more in any Staples store will receive a unique entry code on their receipt to enter the sweepstakes online at www.StaplesForStudents.com.

One grand prize winner will win a $50,000 scholarship plus a trip for two to Los Angeles to meet global pop music star, Katy Perry. Four first prize winners and one guest each will also win air travel to Los Angeles and accommodations for two nights to meet Katy Perry at the VIP Winners Celebration.

Entries must be submitted before September 10, 2016 at 11:59 PM ET. Entrants must be 13 years or older. Visit www.StaplesForStudents.com for official rules.
