Bartell Drugs and Seattle Gourmet Foods/Dilettante Chocolates® team up to raise money for Seattle Children’s Hospital

SEATTLE, 2018-Feb-01 — /EPR Retail News/ — When Emmy was only 2 years old, she and her family received devastating news—the little girl had neuroblastoma, a cancer of the nervous system. What followed was a whirlwind of treatments, eventually leading to her remission. But the possibility of complete financial ruin for her family overlaid the joy of her prognosis.

Thanks to Seattle Children’s Hospital’s Uncompensated Care Fund, not only was Emmy feeling better, but her family’s fiscal future was sound.

To help support Emmy and the thousands of other children in need of vital healthcare, Bartell Drugs and Seattle-based Seattle Gourmet Foods/Dilettante Chocolates® products, are joining forces to raise money for Seattle Children’s in support of its vision to transform children’s health for generations to come.

During February, for each package of Dilettante Chocolates® products — TruffleCremes®, Chocolate-covered fruit, caramels, and toppings and sauces purchased at a Bartell location— a financial contribution will be made to the hospital with a total expected up to $25,000.

The fundraising effort by the two Northwest-owned companies reflects their long-time commitment to positively impact the lives of children and families living in the Puget Sound area.

“Seattle Gourmet Foods, manufacturer of Dilettante Chocolates®, is proud to support our Pacific Northwest community through this partnership with Bartell Drugs and Seattle Children’s Hospital,” says Mark S. Clark, Director, Seattle Gourmet Foods. “This collaborative fundraising effort focuses on supporting the important healthcare role that Seattle Children’s plays in our region.”

To drive additional awareness, Bartell locations will have major in-store and print promotions as well as advertising.

Bartell Drugs to perform real-time comprehensive prescription compliance checks with LexisNexis VerifyRx™

Comprehensive prescription compliance verification solution integrates easily  into existing pharmacy workflows

ATLANTA, 2017-Oct-13 — /EPR Retail News/ — Announced today (Oct. 10, 2017) , Bartell Drugs, a family-owned pharmacy chain of 67 stores in the greater Puget Sound area, will use LexisNexis VerifyRx™ to perform real-time comprehensive prescription compliance checks within their existing workflows.

The solution uses the existing, real-time pharmacy connectivity of eRx Network and the provider validation service from LexisNexis – on more than 8.5 million providers. It requires little to no IT integration effort or maintenance by a pharmacy chain and enables industry-leading prescriber validation across the pharmacy industry.

“We were ready to take the next step in prescriber compliance and needed a turnkey solution that would not take resources away from our focus on patients,” said Peter Koo, senior vice president of Pharmacy, Bartell Drugs. “The VerifyRx solution enables Bartell to take advantage of timely, accurate and comprehensive prescriber data via the LexisNexis Provider Data MasterFile™, using eRx Network’s connectivity to implement a solution directly within our pharmacy workflow.”

Using VerifyRx helps to mitigate the risk of payment recovery and regulatory fines that commonly result from the prescriptive authority, federal licensing, state credentials and controlled substance regulations.

“We are pleased to be partnering with Bartell to deliver the vast capabilities of VerifyRx and the value provided by the seamless integration with the eRx Network,” said Craig Ford, vice president of sales, Pharmacy, LexisNexis Risk Solutions. “Verifying prescriber data in the workflow process is critical to pharmacies. Our strategic alliance has enabled us to respond to the needs of Bartell and other chains to deliver a leading, compliance-driven solution while using their existing connectivity.”

In addition to conducting comprehensive compliance checks with VerifyRx, pharmacies can take advantage of its time-saving, risk mitigation features, such as a custom user interface and reporting tools.

“The combination of eRx Network’s reliable network and the comprehensive prescriber compliance solution of LexisNexis Health Care will help make it easier and more efficient for Bartell to meet compliance requirements through its entire chain of stores,” said Richard Brook, senior vice president, eRx Network. “We are confident that the implementation of our combined solutions will add value to Bartell’s processes without causing any disruption to their workflows or increases to their operational costs or development efforts.”

Bartell Drugs introduces new Specialty Pharmacy service

SEATTLE, 2017-Mar-23 — /EPR Retail News/ — Bartell Drugs, America’s oldest family owned pharmacy, has launched a new Specialty Pharmacy service that personalizes healthcare for those experiencing conditions requiring specialized medications.

“Being diagnosed and entering treatment can be overwhelming,” states Bartell’s Clinical Programs Manager, Christina Ree. “Our Specialty Pharmacy program helps take the fear out of the process and replaces it with confidence.”

Some of the difficult to treat conditions may include cancer, hepatitis B and C, HIV, rheumatoid arthritis and a host of other medical conditions requiring very specialized medications and therapy regimens.

Specialty Pharmacy dispenses medications used to treat challenging and complex medical conditions. But it also helps patients see the benefits of their prescriptions.

“Specialty care is more than just dispensing medications,” says Ree. “Through this program, we help engage with patients to address all the issues relevant to their condition and take care of everything behind the scene so they can start and stay on therapy.”

Ree notes that this is really more of a partnership with patients, going the extra mile to help educate patients about potential drug interactions, side effects, scheduling prescription renewals, helping to connect them with payment assistance options, and other aspects of care.

Patient contact is made via in-person check-ins,  in addition to wellness calls by trained professionals who monitor patient progress and answer questions in the convenience of their home.

Bartell’s Specialty Pharmacy programs are available at all Bartell locations. Patients can check with their Bartell pharmacist to learn more about the program.

Bartell Drugs offers convenient and affordable flu vaccination

SEATTLE, 2016-Dec-23 — /EPR Retail News/ — The holiday season brings together family and friends, but it also increases the chances of contracting the flu.

Bartell Drugs is here as your convenient and affordable place to get that flu vaccination for you and your entire family.

Flu season is starting to take hold across the country, and U.S. health officials are urging everyone who hasn’t gotten a flu shot yet to get one now.

According to epidemiologists with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, national flu levels are currently low and scattered, yet evidence points to an increase in outbreaks, including here in the Pacific Northwest.

Most of the virus out there is influenza H3N2 with H1N1 still circulating. H3N2 is a strain that is part of this year’s flu vaccine, according to the CDC. The vaccine supply is good this year, with more than 131 million doses available.

The range of hospitalization is still low, but as with most H3N2 seasons, the highest rate right now is in the elderly.

The overall rate of hospitalizations for flu is about 2 out of every 100,000 cases. In the elderly, it’s 7 per every 100,000.

Flu activity will increase, says Christina Ree, Bartell’s Clinical Programs Manager. “We don’t know how severe the season is going to be, so it’s important to get vaccinated before flu activity picks up. Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself,” she said.

In a typical flu season, flu complications—including pneumonia —send more than 200,000 Americans to the hospital. Death rates linked to flu vary annually, but have gone as high as 49,000 in a year, according to the CDC.

Most of the time, flu activity peaks between December and March but can last as late as May.

How effective a vaccine is depends on how good a match it is to the strains of flu virus circulating that year. Most years, the vaccine is between 40 percent and 60 percent effective, according to the CDC.

Getting your flu shot soon is important because it can take several weeks to produce enough antibodies to give you maximum protection, officials noted.

Accessible prescription label service now available for visually impaired customers at Bartell Drugs

SEATTLE, 2016-Oct-20 — /EPR Retail News/ — Bartell Drugs is now offering three solutions for persons with visual impairment who cannot read the print on their prescription drug container labels.

Patients can receive either ScripTalk audible labels, ScripView large print labels, or Braille labels based on their need.  Accessible prescription labels help low-vision patients safely and independently manage their medications and communicate more effectively with their pharmacist about their prescription needs.

“It’s extremely important that patients know and understand the instructions for their medications,” says Bartell Drugs’ Vice President of Pharmacy Operations and Clinical Services, Billy Chow. “This can be challenging for our patients with visual impairments. Having this system guarantees those individuals full and unhindered access to accurate information in a format that is tailored for their needs.”

ScripTalk is an audible prescription reader.  The ScripTalk label is embedded with a microchip and is programmed with all the printed label data. The patient places the container onto a small hand-held reader, and with the press of a button, is able to listen to the information including patient name, drug name and instructions, pharmacy contact information, warnings and more. Deaf-Blind users can request ScripTalk User software to export text to their Braille browser display.  The ScripTalk reader is provided free by En-Vision America, Inc.

ScripView is a large-print, booklet-style label attached to the prescription container. It provides easy access to the prescription label for those with low vision. The label contains all the same information as the pharmacy’s regular label, but in large print.  The pharmacist can edit the font size based upon the need of the patient.

Braille label tape can be added to a prescription with basic medication information.

The accessible label service is free to those who request it.  To receive ScripTalk, ScripView or Braille labels, patients should discuss which accommodation would be best for them with their local Bartell Drug pharmacist.

Bartell Drugs and Union Gospel Mission to distribute “flu kits” and free flu shot vouchers to the homeless on October 12

SEATTLE, 2016-Oct-10 — /EPR Retail News/ — Bartell Drugs and Seattle’s Union Gospel Mission (UGM) have teamed to help protect the homeless and insecurely housed residents of the downtown core by distributing “flu kits” and vouchers for free flu immunizations.

Members of Bartell staff will join UGM’s Search and Rescue street team from 7:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 12 to distribute these materials in Seattle downtown core, including the area known as “The Jungle” as well as the Chinatown-International district.

Many of us take for granted the small items we need when we have the cold or flu such as tissues, cough drops and pain relievers. But for community members that daily struggle with housing and other basic needs, these items can be nearly impossible to obtain. And affording flu shots can be even more challenging.

Along with each flu kit, Bartells is providing a voucher for a free flu vaccination at any one of our 65 locations in the Puget Sound area. By protecting all the residents of our region—especially those who may lack resources or opportunities—we are helping to protect everyone.

“As the oldest family-owned pharmacy in the United States, Bartell Drugs has been part of the Puget Sound community since 1890,” says President and CEO Brian Unmacht. “This means we have a deep connection to our neighborhoods as well as a responsibility to be a caring and convenient source of community health and wellness—especially individuals and families who may be struggling to meet basic needs.”

“We are excited by Bartells commitment to helping our community’s most vulnerable residents,” says Ralph Rowland, UGM’s vice president for community engagement. “By working with our night patrol street teams, we will be able to get needed items directly into the hands of those who need them, as well as the opportunity to further protect their health with the free flu vaccine vouchers.”

Both organizations hope to distribute more than 1,500 of the flu kits during this effort.

Bartell Drugs and Oberto partner to raise money to help kids in Seattle Children’s hospital

SEATTLE, 2016-Oct-04 — /EPR Retail News/ — Nine-year-old Aiyana Lucas has heart. In fact, she’s had three hearts.

Aiyana was born with a severe heart defect which necessitated a heart transplant when she was only 6 months old. At age 8, congestive heart failure necessitated another transplant which was unsuccessful and so another transplant quickly followed.

Today, she’s an active, healthy 9 year old. And it’s all thanks to the talented team at Seattle Children’s.

To help support Aiyana and the thousands of other children in need of vital healthcare, Bartell Drugs and Kent-based Oberto Beef Jerky are joining forces to raise money for Seattle Children’s in support of its mission to prevent, treat and eliminate pediatric diseases.

This is the second year the locally-based, family-owned companies have joined forces to raise money for the nationally-acclaimed hospital. Last year, $24,500 was collected from the chain’s 64 Puget Sound locations.

During October, for each bag of Oberto Beef Jerky purchased at a Bartell location, a financial contribution will be made to the hospital – with a total expected up to $25,000.

The fundraising effort by the two family-owned companies reflects their long-time commitment to positively impact the lives of children and families living in the Puget Sound area.

“Oberto believes in making healthy and high quality snacks, but our mission is so much more. We pride ourselves on getting involved and serving our community,” said Thomas Hernquist, CEO of Oberto. “We want all children to be able to live a healthy and active life and we hope our donations to Seattle Children’s hospital will help this endeavor.”

“Regardless of a family’s ability to pay, Seattle Children’s delivers world-class care and is recognized as one of the top children’s hospitals in the U.S.,” said Bartell Drugs President and CEO Brian Unmacht. “This collaborative fundraising effort focuses on supporting the important healthcare role that Seattle Children’s plays in our region.”

To drive additional awareness, Bartell locations will have major in-store and print promotions as well as advertising.

In early November, executives from both companies will present the donation check to officials from Oberto.

Catch Every Kid initiative launches to promote childhood immunizations throughout Washington state

SEATTLE, 2016-Sep-09 — /EPR Retail News/ — Today (Sep. 8th, 2016) kicks off Catch Every Kid, Group Health Foundation’s effort to promote childhood immunizations throughout Washington state. The campaign is asking parents to vaccinate their children, encourage discussions with friends and neighbors about the importance of vaccinating children, and to donate to the Foundation so more kids have access to vaccinations.

Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR), Chicken Pox, and Pertussis, can be prevented if children under the age of six receive immunizations. Children at the age of 11-14 should receive booster shots to continue the immunity from earlier childhood vaccinations and HPV vaccination to ward off cancer later in life.

“The CDC tells us that rates for vaccine-preventable diseases in the U.S. have decreased by 99 percent since vaccines were introduced,” says Kevin Sullivan, chair of the Foundation board of directors. “However, here in Washington, nearly one third of children miss one or more recommended vaccinations. We’re on a mission to close the gap, to catch every kid and make sure no child falls through.”

Bartell Drugs and Cliff Avril, a professional football defensive end, have joined with Group Health to promote awareness around childhood vaccinations and provide an easy way for those who wish to donate so that others might also have the same opportunity to receive vaccinations. With any purchase at Bartell Drugs, consumers can now give an Honorary Safety $2 donation at point of purchase. In addition, Group Health and Bartell Drugs provide convenient and affordable access for all to vaccinations through CareClinics.

“Bartell Drugs has been committed to keeping our customer healthy for more than 125 years. We are honored to be a part of this campaign and protecting the children in our communities,” says John Lewis, director of CareClinic Operations. “The convenience and value of the clinics, and the professional medical services available through our Group Health certified health providers, are an excellent way for parents in our community to vaccinate their children. With the optional donation at checkout, they can help vaccinate even more children.”

One goal of the Group Health Foundation is making childhood immunizations accessible to families who cannot afford them, and helping families understand why it’s important to vaccinate. Through donations by individuals in Washington, the Foundation has been able to help nearly 17,000 children receive more than 33,000 vaccines. Equally important, the public has received information vital to understanding the importance of immunizations to the community.

“Vaccines save lives.  It’s really that simple.” says Diana Birkett Rakow, president of the Foundation. “The HPV shot can prevent cancer later in adult life by simply immunizing a pre-teen. Some people think the HPV vaccine is about sex and it’s not.  It is important for parents to hear the facts whether from their health care provider or their neighbor. We can all be advocates for our children’s’ health.”

According to Rakow, Catch Every Kid is about giving parents, caregivers, and community members a chance to protect the children of Washington. She adds, “kids trust their parents and caregivers to catch them when they fall; immunization is part of meriting their trust by catching them before they fall.”

NACDS: UWSOP, Bartell Drugs and QFC Pharmacy will partner with Washington State Health Care Authority to improve immunization rates

Seattle, WA, 2016-Aug-17 — /EPR Retail News/ — The National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) announced that the University of Washington School of Pharmacy (UWSOP), Bartell Drugs, and QFC Pharmacy will partner with Washington State Health Care Authority in a unique demonstration project that aims to foster healthcare collaboration across the care continuum to increase pharmacy-based immunizations.

The demonstration project is one of three that aim to fulfill the goals of an $800,000 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) grant to NACDS. The project will examine innovative healthcare collaborations designed to demonstrate increased rates of pharmacy-based immunizations including influenza, pneumococcal, pertussis and herpes zoster. It also focuses on improving pandemic planning among pharmacies and state health departments and improving access to HPV vaccine resources and education for pharmacists.

The healthcare entities will work together to develop and implement a value-based payment model that is scalable and replicable to improve immunization rates for a targeted population that are recorded in the state registry. The models will innovate methods for sharing immunization information among the participating health plans or systems, accountable care organizations, community pharmacies and patients. The grant teams also will collaborate with public health agencies to improve pandemic vaccine preparedness.

Increasingly, pharmacists are recognized as the front line of health care in communities. “Legislators and regulators at the federal and state levels often reference pharmacists’ success in promoting the necessity of vaccines and in increasing access to them,” said NACDS President and CEO Steven C. Anderson, IOM, CAE.

The state of Washington has lead the way when it comes to pharmacists practicing at the top of their license, thanks to the advocacy of UW pharmacy faculty. Pharmacist-provided vaccines were among the first of many practice innovations begun at the UW.  This project brings together faculty researchers and practitioners who will tap into the diverse expertise at the UWSOP, from pandemic health to onsite coaching in patient care best practices.

“We are excited about this demonstration project that brings together top community pharmacy providers and faculty from the School of Pharmacy with expertise in implementation science and population health. This project will build on our legacy of improving community access to pharmacist-administered vaccinations and evaluating the impact of these important services on population health outcomes,” said Sean D. Sullivan, professor and dean of UWSOP.

“Bartell Drugs has been a regional leader in promoting and providing convenient, affordable access to immunizations and this project will further our ability to reach more audiences in need of immunization,” said Billy Chow, Bartell Drugs’ Vice President of Pharmacy Operations and Clinical Services.

“We are thrilled to continue to improve the shopping experience and add convenience for our patients through this NACDS project,” said Chuck Paulsen, pharmacy merchandiser for QFC Stores. “The increased awareness and transparency of community based will further our mission of improving the health of our patients and local communities we serve.”

NACDS showed its strong commitment to this $800,000 grant by contributing an additional $300,000 to execute the demonstration projects. The project will take place over a 13-month period beginning in August 2016. More information about NACDS’ engagement on related issues is available through the “vaccinations” and “preparedness” tags on NACDS.org.

NACDS represents traditional drug stores and supermarkets and mass merchants with pharmacies. Chains operate more than 40,000 pharmacies, and NACDS’ chain member companies include regional chains, with a minimum of four stores, and national companies. Chains employ more than 3.8 million individuals, including 175,000 pharmacists. They fill over 2.7 billion prescriptions yearly, and help patients use medicines correctly and safely, while offering innovative services that improve patient health and healthcare affordability. NACDS members also include more than 800 supplier partners and nearly 40 international members representing 13 countries. For more information, visit www.NACDS.org.

The UW School of Pharmacy is a global leader in pharmacy education, research and service, committed to providing a transformative learning experience in a collaborative and diverse environment focused on improving the health and well-being of the communities we serve. Our mission is three-fold: inspiring education: developing exceptional, innovative and diverse pharmacy leaders and scientists; discovering solutions: advancing the science, development, implementation, and outcomes of safe and appropriate treatments; and serving people and communities: promoting the health and well-being of the public, locally and globally.
