Carphone Warehouse research: Brits are replacing more and more traditional holiday staples with phones

  • As using phones abroad becomes cheaper, mobiles are becoming our go-to guide to foreign destinations
  • But roaming confusion still reigns with more than three out of five Brits unsure about where they can ‘roam like home’

London, 2017-Aug-02 — /EPR Retail News/ — Brits travelling abroad are increasingly lightening their luggage load by replacing their travel guidebooks with their mobile phones, new research by Carphone Warehouse revealed today (01 Aug 2017). The study also shows that printed boarding passes and complicated fold-out paper maps may soon be for the chopping block thanks to our increasing confidence in using our phones abroad.

The research, carried out on behalf of the UK’s largest independent mobile phone retailer to mark the launch of its interactive roaming map, shows that as a nation we’re replacing more and more traditional holiday staples with our phones. Traditional cameras have already seen their influence wane, with more than 50% of respondents surveyed stating that their phone is their go-to photography tool on holiday, while 45% eschew printed maps for guided directions on their mobiles.

But it’s the rise of apps, review sites and reduced roaming charges that are behind the latest changes to our travel habits, with more than one in five of us now flashing our phones at airports instead of fishing out printed boarding cards. And once they arrive abroad, more than 30% are turning to their phones as the primary source of researching things to do on sites like TripAdvisor, as well as using their phone to place bookings at hotels and restaurants.

Carphone Warehouse’s research shows that it’s not all sun, sea, sand and simplicity when we’re using our phones abroad. 68% of those surveyed feel they do not fully understand the roaming legislation or how it affects their network, despite mobile networks being obligated to contact their customers and explain the new charges.

“As a nation we’re relying more and more on our mobile phones abroad, replacing traditional travel tools like maps, boarding passes and travel guides,“ said Dean Kramer, Marketing Director for Carphone Warehouse. “So it’s more important than ever that customers are given full information on how much using their phone costs when travelling. We’re proud to continue to provide honest, impartial advice – like our new roaming map – and we call on all mobile networks to do their upmost to spread the word.”

Carphone Warehouse’s iD Mobile announces UK’s first ever ‘Data Cushion’ offer

  • ‘Data Cushion’ gives consumers complete peace of mind with an emergency 10GB of extra 4G data

LONDON, 2017-Mar-29 — /EPR Retail News/ — iD Mobile, the 4G mobile network from Carphone Warehouse, has announced the UK’s first ever ‘Data Cushion’ offer that is available with a wide range of smartphone deals. The aim is to give customers peace of mind as they will automatically receive an emergency pot of 10GB of 4G data which they will be able to access at any point during their 24-month contract.

When a customer runs out of their monthly data allowance, they will automatically start to use the emergency pot of 10GB meaning they will no longer need to buy add-ons or be charged out of bundle rates.

The emergency data pot is equivalent to binge-watching three hours of HD content on Netflix1. With the average UK Consumer spending 66 hours a month using data on their smartphone2, the need for this has never been more prevalent.

Carphone Warehouse reports highest ever number of orders made via mobile phone on Black Friday 2016

 

  • Orders up 480% compared to the same time last week

LONDON, 2016-Nov-26 — /EPR Retail News/ — With Black Friday 2016 firmly underway, Carphone Warehouse is reporting its highest ever number of orders made via mobile phone, with the channel now making up nearly half of all online orders, signifying a shift in the way customers shop on Black Friday.

Early bird shoppers have already made the most of the Black Friday deals, as Carphone Warehouse saw its traffic peak between 8am and 9am this morning, this follows some late-night owl browsing, which saw traffic peak between 9pm and 10pm. This morning alone, there has been a 230% increase on orders compared to the same time yesterday and 483% compared to the same time last week as shoppers flock to the retailer to make use of its deals.

Since the new wave of fresh Black Friday deals went live at 8 pm last night, Carphone Warehouse has seen the iPhone 7, Samsung S7 and iPhone 6s fly off its virtual shelves, with black recorded as the most popular colour with iPhone 7 and rose gold with iPhone 6s customers, whilst Samsung customers preferred the silver titanium – exclusive to Carphone Warehouse.

Key deal items proving popular with customers outside of mobile phones, includes the latest VR devices and Samsung’s Gear 360. Carphone Warehouse unveils its latest marketing campaign starring Keith Lemon

London , 2016-Jul-23 — /EPR Retail News/ — Carphone Warehouse has today unveiled its latest marketing campaign starring Keith Lemon, debuting first in cinema alongside this year’s summer blockbusters.

Travelling to Dubai where everyone always gets what they ask for, the ad shows Keith ‘rolling’ in a gold plated G-Wagon flanked by a Lamborghini and Ferrari, and sporting his latest swimming trunks on a private super yacht with some new local friends.

Filmed over three days in an opulent Dubai where everything is upgraded, and in the scorching heat of the desert, Keith continues his quest to tell the nation to just ask Carphone Warehouse for a ‘proper good upgrade deal’.

In what is Keith Lemon’s fifth appearance for Carphone Warehouse, the new campaign created by Brothers and Sisters, kicks off with a full 60” second ad in cinemas across the UK from 22nd July. It is expected nearly 7 million viewers will flock to the cinema to see this year’s hottest summer blockbusters – Star Trek Beyond, Suicide Squad and Magnificent 7 – and Carphone Warehouse is taking full advantage of several ad gold spots for maximum exposure.

The 30” and 40” second TV ads will make their debut on the 8th September, as the campaign enters its next phase ahead of one of the busiest periods of the year. In addition, four short videos have been produced specifically for social media to be seeded across Carphone Warehouse’s social channels including YouTube and Facebook. These short bursts see Keith trying his hand at golf and extreme fishing, reinforcing how ‘satisfying’ and ‘spectacular’ getting an upgrade deal from Carphone Warehouse is.

The Universal VR Headset from Goji takes customers into the cinematic world of virtual reality, where imagination becomes reality, for just £39.99. Mobile World Congress: Carphone Warehouse reveals what Brits really want to see from the latest handsets due to hit the market

  • 70% want their devices to have smarter integration with other technology they use
  • Wireless charging tops the list of most-wanted mobile phone feature
  • Brits still consider calling and texting to be the most important functionality of a smartphone

LONDON, 2016-Feb-22 — /EPR Retail News/ — As the world’s biggest mobile event prepares to open its doors this weekend, Carphone Warehouse reveals what Brits really want to see from some of the latest handsets due to hit the market.

With much more than just new phone devices expected to come out of Mobile World Congress, the survey of 2,000 smartphone users reveals almost three quarters (70%) want their handsets to integrate seamlessly with other technology. Specifically 21% want a better experience when it comes to other connected devices in the home, whether that’s home security systems, smart meters, sound systems or checking the stock of their fridge.

However, the demand for seamlessness doesn’t stop here. Wireless charging is one of the most-wanted smart features, with almost a quarter of users polled (22%) looking for a more seamless way to charge their device and cutting the cord from plug to phone.  Battery life continues to be a consumer pain point, with more than half (53%) stating their phone dies at least once a day and almost two in three (59%) went as far as saying it’s the most irritating aspect of their device.

Other features topping the wishlist include:

  • Phone to become a more viable means for contactless payment on the go (17%);
  • A more effective exercise companion (13%);
  • The ability to drive and control their car with a smartphone (10%)

Despite demand for more innovative features, when it comes to choosing their latest handset, 75% of people said battery life was still key and more than half (54%) would pay more per month for a sustainable battery.

The research also shows that consumers are starting to look for more secure methods to prevent other people from accessing their devices, with fingerprint recognition seen as the safest way to secure a smartphone (23%), closely followed by retina scanning (23%) and voice recognition (18%). Despite being fairly new smartphone additions, 56% of those polled stated they would now opt for fingerprint recognition over traditional passcodes if given the option.

Traditional features continue to play an important role, with 68% of people still considering calling and texting to be the most important functions. When it comes to communication, the research reveals that 45% of men actually see calling as the most important function of a phone, compared to only 33% of women.

The Carphone Warehouse Launches Phone Trade-In Service

The Carphone Warehouse has announced the launch of its exclusive ‘Trade-In Calculator’ service which allows customers to exchange their old mobile phones for cash when either upgrading to a new handset, buying a new pay as you go handset, or taking out a new contract.

For the first time, customers will be able to instantly find out the true value of their old mobile phones and receive cash in-store at one of over 800 stores nationwide. The model of the old mobile is simply inputted into the ‘Trade-In Calculator’ operated by sales advisors, which instantly generates an exchangeable figure of up to £200, dependent on the model of the phone. This amount can then be directly redeemed by customers, or offset against the cost of the upgraded handset and contract. The mobile phone trade in service is also available online through The Carphone Warehouse site.

Being the first major high street retailer to offer such a scheme, The Carphone Warehouse can reveal that two million people in the UK are due a mobile phone upgrade, but are yet to take full advantage of receiving a new phone. Consequently, an astonishing £10,000,000 of potential cash is going unclaimed by customers – money that could make a noticeable difference to the bank balance amidst the current financial climate.

Utilising the ‘Trade-In Calculator’ takes the guesswork out of revealing how much an old handset could be worth. The service works by checking the value of every handset to make sure customers get as much as possible for their old phone. For instance, a high-end handset such as the Nokia Arte would equate to a huge £200 cashback, while more popular handsets from last year such as the Nokia N95 or Sony Ericsson K850i would still generate customers a valuable £115 and £45 respectively.
