LONDON, 2017-May-03 — /EPR Retail News/ — Marks & Spencer announces that Jill McDonald, currently CEO at Halfords, has been appointed to the new role of Managing Director, Clothing, Home & Beauty. Jill’s role will have overall profit and loss accountability for all aspects of the M&S non-Food business, from design and sourcing through to supply chain and logistics, and will report directly in to  M&S’s CEO, Steve Rowe.

Jill will join M&S in the autumn, on a date to be confirmed, and will be part of the M&S Operating Committee, the team accountable for the day-to-day running of the business and the development and execution of strategy.

As a result of this appointment, M&S is also announcing a change of responsibility for CEO Steve Rowe, who will relinquish his Clothing, Home & Beauty accountabilities to Jill on her arrival, and for CFO Helen Weir, who will hand over responsibility for the Clothing, Home & Beauty Supply Chain & Logistics.

Steve Rowe, M&S CEO, said: “I am pleased with the progress we have made in Clothing & Home over the last year and the time is now right for this appointment.

Overall results for the catalogue mailing delivered a near 30% uplift in response. Engage Award’s judges were impressed, commenting “A great example of marketing with a personal touch.” Praising the quality and relevance of personalisation they added, “Strong customisation made it highly engaging and drove strong results”.

Boden’s campaign fought off strong competition in the face of O2’s Priority campaign and Innocent Drinks’ Innocent AGM to claim the Winner’s award. Further shortlisted entries came from Coca-Cola, Cravendale, Fiat, M&S and More Than amongst others.

Clothing retailer Boden reported a doubling of response on its latest enquirer conversion campaign in Summer 2011. Investment in an integrated multichannel approach to enquirer mailings with high level of personalisation paid off with improved ROI compared to past campaigns.

In May, Boden mailed Royal Wedding themed postcards to its enquirers, each featuring a personalised URL leading to a tailored micro site. Visitors were able to enter a competition to instantly win £1,000 worth of Boden clothing. Those that weren’t lucky enough to scoop the prize were awarded with a 15% off discount and automatically deep-linked from the micro site to the relevant Boden web page based on their catalogue preferences and gender.

The thorough approach with creative integration from start to finish paid off, boosting both engagement and sales. Matthew Finn, Assistant Marketing Manager at Boden, commented “Despite the higher initial costs we experienced almost double the response rate.” He went on to thank digital printers Howard Hunt and insight partners Celerity for their support in putting the campaign together.

Mr Finn now plans to roll out similar features to more tactical campaigns in the future. “We’ve seen declining response rates for enquirers on traditional mailings”, he says, sighting personalised integrated campaigns as a way to boost enquirer engagement and conversion.

This success follows hot on the heels of Boden’s catalogue campaign that was awarded Marketing Week’s Engage Award in May. Topshop has joined forces with up-and-coming film maker Tyrone Le Bon and stylist Beth Fenton to create a fashion film which will showcase its trends for SS11. The film features two models, Kat and Esme, as they show off this season’s hottest trends.

Debenhams has revealed the world’s most unlikely fashion icon, as the grumpy and notoriously badly dressed hill walker Alfred Wainwright becomes the driving force behind a new dress code appearing on British streets.

Alfred Wainwright’s famous Lake District guides appears to have inspired so many to follow in his footsteps that niche, all-weather clothing styles have made the giant leap from crag edge to the catwalk, according to fashion store Debenhams.

Demand for hiking style jackets, trousers, t-shirts, socks, rucksacks and boots has soared over the last two years following a series of television and radio programmes about Wainwright and his life.

Debenhams Director of Menswear Buying, Paul Baldwin, commented: “We’re calling it ‘Wainwright Chic’. Men and women have fallen in love with the rugged outdoor image the hill climbing clothing style portrays, and want to wear it every day.

“At one time, these specialist clothes would have been bought only by long distance hill walkers and mountaineers.

“Now, however, you’re more likely to see them worn on the streets of Kensington and Chelsea than Scafell or Grisedale Pike”.

The greatest irony is that Wainwright himself had a somewhat eclectic taste in men’s clothing. Many of his epic walks were conducted in an ancient flat cap and a battered, belted coat worn over a frumpy Fair Isle jumper which had seen better days. Badly fitting trousers held up by style-less braces were tucked into thick, grey woollen socks, which he allowed to accumulate in a haphazard manner, around the tops of crude but functional boots.

Debenhams Finds Out How Fashion Suffers As The Week Goes On

Debenhams research reveals women take 36 minutes longer to get dressed for work on a Monday than on any other day of the week, new research shows.

According to the Debenhams study results, extra time is devoted to perfecting their hair, make up and clothing so that they can be sure of making a good impression on work colleagues. However, standards slip dramatically with each passing day, so that by the time Friday comes, the time spent on their appearance has slumped to just one quarter of the original figure.

Debenhams spokesman Ed Watson said: “Many women clearly experience a major fashion deficit as the week goes on. For some it’s a swift journey from Cheryl Cole to Nora Batty – in just five days.”

The data emerged during Debenhams network of personal shopper studies into women and men’s dressing habits throughout the week.

The results show that women spend, on average, 76 minutes getting ready for work each Monday morning. Twenty three minutes of which will be devoted to their hair, eighteen minutes on make-up, sixteen minutes to trying out different combinations of clothes with the rest taken up by showering and washing. However, this figure falls to just 40 minutes the following day, with time spent on hair falling to 12 minutes, with make-up and deciding what to wear both dropping to 9 minutes each.

By the time Friday comes, the total time spent on getting ready has collapsed to just 19 minutes – a quarter of the original figure. Instead hair preparation takes six minutes, make up just two minutes and deciding what to wear just one minute. Time spent in the bathroom remains constant at an average of ten minutes regardless of day of the week.

Men, by comparison, take on average 28 minutes to get ready on a Monday, a figures which slumps the very next day to 14 minutes before falling to a constant low of eleven minutes for the rest of the week.

WOMbat Helps Paddle-Boarding Make A Splash In The UK

Adventure clothing and lifestyle brand, WOMbat, is helping organise a new competition for one of the UK’s fastest growing sports.

Forget Sunday football leagues and midweek darts leagues, the summer of 2010 will see a new kid arrive in town – Stand Up Paddle League.

Paddle-boarding has you standing on a board, using a long paddle to propel yourself over a stretch of water. The sport, which involves elements of surfing and kayaking, can be a fantastic way of improving your posture and developing or maintaining your core muscles as you work to keep your balance on the water.

People around the country are already discovering how much fun paddle-boarding can be, but to help bring the sport to even more people in 2010, WOMbat and the Fen Paddle Company have teamed up to organise Paddle League.

Tournaments have already been planned to take place on rivers in Cambridge and Norwich at the end of July, while more locations are still to be confirmed. Teams taking part will have to face three different challenges on the day called “over, through and under”. More details are due to be released soon, but the aim will be to post the fastest time in each heat in order to progress to the finals where teams will be able to compete for a host of amazing prizes.

However, the team at WOMbat understands that it’s not all about winning, so they’re going to be handing out a raft of extra goodies including prizes for the team which raises the most cash for charity, the team with the best attitude, and a prize for the individual who pulls the most impressive wipeout.

All equipment including boards, paddles and buoyancy aids will be provided on the day, as well as an hour’s paddle training to make sure contestants are up to speed.

Money raised through Paddle League will be donated to East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH), a charity which cares for children with life-threatening conditions and complex healthcare needs.
