Argos gears up for Black Friday mobile shopping bonanza

Milton Keynes, UK, 2015-11-26 — /EPR Retail News/ — With just a few days to go until the biggest shopping event of the year, Argos is gearing up its online channels, stores, distribution network and people to be ready to fulfil demand for the thousands of deals it is offering to UK shoppers for Black Friday 2015.

The retailer expects this year’s Black Friday to be another mobile-led event with shoppers on smart phones and tablets leading the bargain frenzy, after a staggering two thirds of Argos shoppers snapped up Black Friday deals using smart phones and tablets in 2014.

This year, overall Argos will release thousands of deals on its websites and apps to celebrate the Black Friday shopping season.  Its 12 day Black Friday event launched on Friday 20 November, which included ‘3 for 2’ on toys and amazing deals on videos games, 4K TVs and cameras, with some reductions at less than half price.  More deals are being added in the run up to the day itself.  A select number of highly competitive ‘When It’s Gone, It’s Gone’ (WIGIG) deals will launch in the early hours of Black Friday, followed by more bargains throughout December.

Chief Operating Officer at Argos, David Robinson, said: “Customers can get great deals on everything they want for loved ones or themselves this Christmas.  We can also help them get their hands on items fast, in the way they want.

“We know an increasing number of customers want to be able to snap up deals whenever and wherever they are, using smart phones and tablets whether it’s in front of the telly or on their way to work, so we’ve made this as easy as possible for them.  Our Fast Track collection and delivery and Check & Reserve services enable them to secure the product they want online and avoid the Black Friday rush if they choose.”

On the high street, Argos has recruited an additional 9,000 temporary workers to help serve customers in its 800+ stores over Christmas.  On Black Friday itself, they will be joined by hundreds of head office workers helping out on the shop floor.

To get the deals and top products out to stores and customers’ homes, Argos’ 11 enormous distribution centres covering a total of 5.4 million square feet of floor space will have 6,100 warehouse workers and 1,000 delivery drivers, supported by 3,000 Fast Track drivers based at local stores, dispatching millions of gifts over Black Friday and beyond.  High-demand products being ferried across the UK this Christmas using a fleet of 1,800 lorries and Fast Track vans include wearable tech such as FitBit, Nutribullets, 4K TVs, Xboxes and games such as Call of Duty, and hot toys for 2015 such as Star Wars, Lego and Thunderbirds Tracy Island.

Customers UK-wide shopping for deals on Black Friday will be able to take advantage of Argos’ innovative new same-day home delivery service, Fast Track.  Same-day delivery slots will be offered to customers on a first-come, first-served basis, with subsequent days’ slots offered once Black Friday’s delivery schedules are full.

In 2014, Argos saw more than 13.5m visits to its web channels on Black Friday, up 197 per cent from the previous year.  This year it expects to see a repeat of last year’s unusual shopping patterns as consumers stayed up to shop into the wee small hours to snap up the best deals as soon as they launched.  There were more than half a million of visits to the Argos website between 1-2am in 2014.

In 2014, Argos’ peak hour for orders was 2–3pm with an average of eight orders a second. On average per minute Argos sold 14 VAX steam mops, nine Scooby Doo Hide and Seeks and seven iPad Mini Wi-Fi 16GBs.

Argos.co.uk and its mobile site and apps received around 900 million visits in the last financial year making Argos the UK’s largest high street retailer online.  Around 45 per cent of all Argos sales are online, with sales through mobile devices now representing 25 per cent of total sales.

eBay and Argos to make it easier and more convenient for sellers on eBay to offer unique fulfilment services

Milton Keynes, UK, 2015-10-17 — /EPR Retail News/ — eBay and Argos today announce that they have signed a wider multi-year partnership making it easier and more convenient for both business and consumer sellers on eBay to offer unique fulfilment services. The partnership spans collection and drop-off at Argos stores and delivery within 48 hours.

Drop-off and delivery

Under the partnership, eBay will for the first time roll-out a national parcel drop-off service, enabling eBay consumer sellers in the UK to drop-off their sold items at Argos stores nationwide. The service will commence with 150 stores before the end of 2015, with more stores to follow in the coming year.

Under the new service, items packaged and dropped off in Argos stores by consumer sellers will be despatched to eBay buyers. The drop-off and delivery service was successfully piloted earlier this year in ten Argos stores across four towns, and is both cheaper and more convenient* than comparable services.

Click & Collect

Additionally, Argos and eBay have extended their ongoing commitment to their Click & Collect programme, an exclusive partnership which began as a small pilot in late 2013.  Since inception the parties have helped customers collect more than three million parcels, from around 800 UK and Northern Ireland Argos stores, sold on behalf of 200,000 businesses selling on eBay.

Tanya Lawler, UK Vice President, eBay, said: “In 1995, eBay disrupted shopping by creating a commerce platform powered by customers. Our continued success is all about listening and responding to customers’ needs – and we know that they expect ever more convenience, choice and value. Our ambition with this deal is to grow and establish some of the most exciting and innovative fulfilment services in the UK. The eBay and Argos partnership further dissolves the lines between digital and traditional retail.”

David Robinson, Chief Operating Officer, Argos, said: “Argos invented click and collect in the UK, and recently added to its record of innovation by introducing FastTrack Collection and FastTrack Delivery – market leading fulfilment services for the online shopper.  The ability for customers to get their purchases quickly, easily and locally has become the new retail battleground.  With over 800 stores and a friendly face on every high street, we are ideally placed to attract eBay’s business and consumer customers to use our unique store network.  This deal reaffirms and builds on the successful and deepening relationship between our businesses.”

Argos predicts UK mobile shopping frenzy this year with more visits than ever to its website and apps on ‘Cyber Monday’

Milton Keynes, UK, 2014-11-28 — /EPR Retail News/ — As one of the biggest shopping weekends of 2014 approaches, leading online retailer Argos is predicting a UK mobile shopping frenzy this year with more visits than ever to its website and apps on ‘Cyber Monday’ coming from shoppers using smartphones and tablets.

With Christmas shopping kick-starting on ‘Black Friday’ 28 November, as customers seek bargains galore from the abundance of special deals this year, Argos is expecting online traffic to reach a peak on ‘Cyber Monday’ 1 December 2014.  It is predicting more than five million visits to its websites and apps on the day, more than half of which will come from customers using mobile devices, at a rate of around 3,000 visits per minute as customers increasingly want to shop while on-the-go.

On Cyber Monday last year (2 December 2013) Argos saw over 3.6 million visits across argos.co.uk, its mobile site and apps.  Online visits peaked between 11am-12pm, and again in the evening between 9pm-10pm.

This year an increasing number of shoppers are turning to Argos’ mobile apps to Check & Reserve orders where items can be reserved for immediate collection from store.

In line with this, the number of Argos app downloads – currently at around 10 million– is expected to increase over Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

In the spirit of its new advertising campaign, Argos is encouraging customers to GET SET for Black Friday with a special countdown clock on argos.co.uk to help build excitement for the great offers and outstanding deals they can expect all weekend across technology, toys, TV ranges and more.

David Robinson, Chief Operating Officer at Argos, said: “Customer shopping habits are changing fast and more and more are wanting the convenience of shopping on-the-go or in front of the TV in the evening.   Making mobile shopping easy has been our priority this year, and we’ve just launched our first ever Argos Collect Store at Cannon Street Underground Station for busy commuters to collect their orders on-the-go. We’ve also brought gift inspiration into the 21st century with some great new Christmas apps for smartphones and tablets.”

Argos’ 11 enormous distribution centres covering a total of 5.4 million square feet of floor space will have 6,100 warehouse workers and 1,000 delivery drivers helping to dispatch millions of gifts over Cyber Monday and beyond, including high-demand products such as wearable technology, video games, DisneyFrozentoys, Lego, hair care like the BaByliss Curl Secret, and Beats headphones, out to stores and homes on a fleet of 975 lorries and vans.

David Robinson continued: “The race to get top gifts such as smart watches, DisneyFrozentoys and video games into customers’ hands quickly will be more intense than ever and our huge distribution operation is already gearing up.  For the first time ever, 150 of our larger stores will act as mini distribution centres by supplying products to smaller stores nearby, so customers can get fast access to 20,000 products within hours wherever they are.”

According to the Adobe Digital Index, shoppers are expected to spend around £281 million this Cyber Monday, contributing to a 14 per cent growth of online Christmas sales year-on-year.

Argos.co.uk and its mobile site and apps received around 738 million visits in the last financial year making Argos the UK’s largest high street retailer online.  43 per cent of all Argos sales are online, with sales through mobile devices now representing 22 per cent of total sales[1].

This year, children can create their own digital Wishlist for Santa using the new Argos Wishlist app. Aimed at three to seven year-olds, the app enables children to choose their top gifts on a phone or tablet with help from animated characters. The Argos Gift Finder app offers tailored gifting suggestions for friends and family. Both apps are available for free from the App Store and Google Play store.

Argos has also added a fun twist to Christmas shopping this year by creating its very own Facebook game ‘Friend or Fraud’ where users invite their friends to guess what is on their wish list. Customers with smartphones can also use the Argos app to access videos, games and competitions from Argos’ traditional paper gift guide, available in store now.

One of Argos’ biggest distribution centres, Barton in Burton upon Trent, has 650,000 sq ft of floor space – equivalent to eight Wembley-sized football pitches – and typically dispatches 44 million items every year.  This Christmas Barton’s 900-strong team of workers are expecting to dispatch over 300,000 items and by the end of the year will have sent out enough iPads to create 22 million gigabytes of memory – that’s enough to store roughly 4.4 billion songs and is half the capacity of the new Titan super computer in America.
