Two stores in Barrow in Furness and Dalton in Furness set to unveil new look following £1.4 million refits

MANCHESTER, England, 2017-Aug-28 — /EPR Retail News/ — The Co-op’s investment in Cumbria is set to top £4.5 million as it prepares to relaunch two stores in Barrow on Furness and neighbouring Dalton in Furness during early September.

Roose Road’s Co-op will reopen its doors on 1 September following a £590,000 makeover, whilst Market Street’s Co-op will unveil its £832,000 new look on 8 September.

Both will have a focus on fresh, healthy foods, meal ideas and essentials.

The refits form part of a rigorous programme which saw Co-op stores Island Road, Barrow and Brampton unveil their new look in May, Denton Street, Carlisle in June and Egremont and Kirkby Stephen in July. They also follow the first birthday of the Co-op’s £600,000 Seascale store which opened last summer.

The stores will also bring a funding boost for local community groups through the Co-op’s new Membership scheme. Members receive a 5% reward on purchases of own-branded products and services, with a further 1% going directly to local causes to make a difference in the community.

Charities and groups set to benefit in the Roose Road area include The Birchall Trust and Project John Ltd, whilst those at Market Street include 1st Dalton St Mary’s Guides, Buccleuch Hall Management Committee and The Rotary Club of Furness Peninsula.

Consumer habits are changing and we know that shoppers simply want to buy what they want, when they want.

“What’s more, our membership message seems to be resonating with shoppers in Cumbria, where earlier this year we raised £133,000 for 57 good causes. And, students holding the NUS extra card will also receive a 10% discount off their groceries.

ERF Electrical Wholesalers Ltd is relocating from Willenhall Road to unit 2, The Dunstall Hill Estate, after agreeing a 10-year lease with leading commercial property investment company LCP, which owns and manages the estate.

The 4,933 sq ft unit is double the size of its previous premises and will enable the family-run business to increase its stock holding, supporting the growth of the Wolverhampton branch, which has been in the city since 1979.

ENGLAND: Atom Beers secures its first national listing with Asda

ENGLAND: Atom Beers secures its first national listing with Asda

Asda is the first supermarket to market the craft beer nationally

LEEDS, England, 2017-Jun-27 — /EPR Retail News/ — The trend for craft beer continues, particularly for a small Craft Brewer in Hull which is celebrating after securing its first national listing with Asda.

The supermarket will stock four beers from Atom Beers, brewed in Hull, in up to 156 of its stores across England, Wales and Scotland.

With four new lines launching on the shelves, Yorkshire based Asda is aiming to lead the way in supporting local brewers, as the demand for craft beer amongst consumers continues across the United Kingdom.

Atom was founded by Allan Rice and Sarah Thackray in 2014 with the ethos to not only make great consistently flavour forward beers, but to use the brewery as an educational facility – to inspire people to consider careers in science and engineering.

Its focus on science and education are evident through weekly brewery tours for the public and an 8-week long intensive Beer School for beer lovers wanting to improve their knowledge and craft. In addition to this, the brewery is actively involved in scientific research, college out reach programs and collaborating with the University of Hull and the Science without Borders programme to study complex carbohydrate characteristic of beer.

Asda will start by stocking four lines of Atom beers in 330ml cans; Atom Schrodinger’s Cat, Atom Quantum State , Atom Pulsar Pilsner and Atom Phobos & Deimos.

Allan Rice, co-founder of Atom, commented: “We are delighted to have secured our first national listing with Asda, making our beer more accessible from a convenient location whilst doing your weekly shop.

“As a young microbrewery it’s great to be featured by a national retailer, and we’re impressed at ASDA’s commitment to supporting local suppliers, no matter how big or small the brand.

“It’s incredible to think that a microbrewery in Hull has been recognised internationally and we are excited that more people across the country can now taste our beer.”

The new deal will see the following lines stocked in stores across England and Wales:

Atom Schrodinger’s Cat – 3.5%, 330ML – Schrodinger’s Cat is a paradox, as is this beer. Brewed to be low in alcohol, but full in body. Brewed to have a strong malt backbone, yet pack a punch of Mosaic and Citra hops.

Atom Quantum State – 4.2%, 330ML – A Quantum State shows the probability of every outcome of a measurable situation. A beer for every occasion, light, drinkable and full of citrus flavour. Extra pale malt, with some body from the addition of oats, a simple but effective malt bill allows American hops to shine.

Atom Pulsar Pilsner – 4.45%, 330ML – A pulsar is like an electromagnetic lighthouse in space. A super dense star at the end of its life that spins in a very precise interval, emitting radiation in a beam only observable when it points towards Earth. A classic German Pilsner, modernised by new age hops. Bright in flavour, crisp, refreshing and with a citrus led hoppy finish.

Atom Phobos & Deimos – 7%, 330ML – Named after the sons of Ares who was known to the Romans as Mars. This Rye IPA has a strong spicy malt backbone that makes way to big hitting American hops.

Alan Jackson, Buying Manager – Local BWS and Core Ambient, said: “The craft beer culture continues to grow, and it’s clear customers are trading up to more premium beers, particularly ones which come from local breweries.

‘‘We are really proud to be the only supermarket with Atom in our range. They are a fantastic, young brewery who have achieved international acclaim for their beers.

“It’s brilliant to bring this beer to our customers in urban craft hotspots across England, Wales and Scotland as I’m sure it’s something they wouldn’t expect and normally wouldn’t have access to.”

Asda recently announced it is massively extending its craft beer offering, reducing duplication of its existing beers and lagers range and adding over 100 new craft beers to its offering, including several exclusive products.

ENGLAND: Co-op Foundation’s #iwill fund now accepting applications

MANCHESTER, England, 2017-Jun-12 — /EPR Retail News/ — The Co-op Foundation is inviting youth charities in disadvantaged areas of England to apply for the first round of its #iwill fund.

Last month, the Foundation announced a new £2 million partnership to help young people take action to tackle loneliness – a key issue the Co-op has been campaigning on for the past two years. The first £400,000 of this funding will be awarded in 2017, through nine regional grants and one larger national project.

The #iwill fund is made possible thanks to a £40 million joint funding from the National Lottery through the Big Lottery Fund, and the Department of Culture, Media and Sport. £1 million from the #iwill fund will be matched pound-for-pound by the Co-op Foundation, who will use the combined pot to grow their national network of partners tackling youth loneliness.

Funds will be targeted at disadvantaged areas where there are currently fewer opportunities for youth social action – activities which make a positive difference to communities, while developing young people’s skills.

Jim Cooke, Co-op Foundation Manager, explains:
“The challenges of growing up today, from the impact of social media to the ‘gig’ economy, mean that loneliness is a significant issue for young people.

“By creating more opportunities to take part in meaningful social action, we hope to strengthen young people’s sense of belonging and help develop a generation of confident, connected young citizens.”

Organisations awarded grants through the new fund will join an existing network of Co-op Foundation partners, who are addressing different aspects of youth loneliness and working together to share learnings about the issue.

One of these partners is Youth Focus: North East, who have worked with a group of young people to develop a grassroots peer-to-peer approach to tackling loneliness, called ‘Fast Friends’. Using photography as a way of exploring experiences of loneliness, the Fast Friends group are encouraging other young people to open up about this issue and take positive actions to support each other.

Fast Friends member Adam Cowley (21) said:
“I think the loneliness project is important because a lot of young people suffer from isolation and we can all help to do something about it.”

The #iwill fund supports the aims of the UK-wide #iwill campaign, co-ordinated by the charity Step Up To Serve, to increase the number of young people taking part in social action.

Charlotte Hill, CEO of Step Up To Serve, said:
“Social action builds vital skills whilst also enabling young people to contribute to their communities. Young people should ALL have access to these opportunities to make a difference, regardless of their background. “This exciting new partnership is all about enabling young people to understand the challenges of loneliness and consider how they can help others to cope with them. I look forward to hearing about the great new youth-led projects this funding will support.”

The deadline for expressions of interest in applying to the fund is 7 July. To find out more, including full details of eligible areas and how to apply, visit coop.co.uk/foundation

ENGLAND: Asda stores across Staffordshire to sell three lines of Titanic Brewery’s beer

Up to 26 Asda stores across Staffordshire will now stock three lines of Titanic Brewery’s beer

LEEDS, England, 2017-Jun-06 — /EPR Retail News/ — A local brewery in Stoke-on-Trent are getting into the celebratory spirit after securing a regional listing with Asda, who will stock three lines of beer in up to 26 of their stores across Staffordshire.

Titanic Brewery was founded in 1985 and is now run by brothers, Dave and Keith Bott, with the ethos remaining the same as it always has been; to brew great beer locally for local people.

Founded in Burslem, the brewery pays homage to the commander of the world’s most famous liner – Captain Edward John Smith – who was born in just a stone’s throw away in Eturia.

From humble beginnings Titanic Brewery has grown beyond all expectations to produce in excess of 2.3 million pints of fine ale every year.

With three new lines launching on the shelves, Asda is aiming to lead the way in supporting local brewers.

Asda will start by stocking three lines of beer in 500ml bottles; Iceberg, White Star and Plum Porter.

Keith Bott, managing director of Titanic Brewery, commented: “We are delighted to be working with Asda, it just goes to show how our brand continues to grow as locals crave local brewed beers as well as national ales.

“We are delighted to launch in 26 stores across Staffordshire, making our beers more readily available for locals and a sense of pride in the region – we couldn’t be happier.”

The new deal will see the following lines stocked in up to 26 Staffordshire stores:

Iceberg (4.1%) – A combination of Maris Otter pale malt and fine wheat malt, give this refreshing beer real zest. Add refreshing Yakima Galena and Cascade hops and what you get is a fantastic wheat beer that will hole any passing thirst – 6 stores

White Star (4.5%) – A light refreshing distinctively hoppy beer with a freshness that belies its strength, so easy to drink it will fool all but the crustiest of sea dogs – 26 stores

Plum Porter (4.9%) – A dark strong and well-rounded beer that recently appeared in the Independent’s 10 best porters and stouts. The richness of such a rotund beer is brought to an even keel by the late addition of Goldings hops and natural plum flavouring. Take the opportunity and go for the low hanging fruit, this sumptuous beer really is a plum! – 24 stores

Alan Jackson, Buying Manager – Local BWS and Core Ambient, said: ““I am really proud of our bottled Ale range and bringing Titanic on board in the Staffordshire region will only enhance our range.

“Titanic Brewery brews premium beers, with the Plum Porter being one that immediately caught my eye.”

Asda to stock Thirsty Farmer ciders in stores across England & Wales

Asda to stock Thirsty Farmer ciders in stores across England & Wales

LEEDS, England, 2017-May-27 — /EPR Retail News/ — The trend for craft beer and cider continues, particularly for a small Craft Cider Maker in Nottinghamshire, which is celebrating after securing two regional listings with Asda that will stock two craft ciders in 50 of its stores in England.

Asda will be the first national supermarket to stock the Premium cider, which will be hitting the shelves together with the Medium cider from Monday 22 May.

Thirsty Farmer is considered the ‘original Nottinghamshire Cider’, taking the family’s Somerset farming heritage to the Nottinghamshire- Leicestershire border.

The Fear family has been making Cider for generations, but it wasn’t until 1880 before the first commercial batch was sold by Mr Metford Fear to a public house in Weston Super Mare.

For many years, the same cider was made for friends, family and colleagues by Mr John Fear on his farms in the South West and John continues to help his son, Andrew, to make the cider today, having passed down the art of real cider making.
In 2005, Andrew settled in Sutton Bonington and began to produce the Cider, as “Thirsty Farmer Cider”, which was awarded two Gold Stars by the Guild of Fine Food in the 2011 & 2012 Great Taste Awards.

Andrew Fear, Cider Maker at Thirsty Farmer, commented: “We are delighted to have secured two regional listings with Asda.
“We are very excited to be able to offer customers the option of purchasing their favourite Craft Cider whilst doing the weekly shop, whilst also reaching out to new customers and spread the Thirsty Farmer word.
“This new deal is a great example of the supermarket’s commitment to supporting local suppliers, no matter how big or small the brand.

The new deal will see the following lines stocked in stores across England and Wales:
Premium cider (6% vol, 500ml) – a long fermented farmhouse cider that has been filtered and carbonated to produce a refreshing, slightly sparkling, crisp, clear and distinctive, bittersweet apple taste.
Medium cider (4.5% vol, 500ml) – a more traditional long fermented, still farmhouse cider, rich amber in colour and slightly cloudy with a rich, ripe apple scent.

Alan Jackson, Buying Manager – Local BWS and Core Ambient, said: “It’s clear that customers are trading up to more premium products, particularly ones which come from local cider makers, so we are delighted to be the first national supermarket to list the Premium Cider line.

a“Cider is traditionally made in the West Country, Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Kent, however Thirsty Farmer are really embracing Nottinghamshire and continue to invest in local orchards to reduce reliance on cider apple varieties trucked in from Herefordshire and the West Country.”

Tesco customers saved over 1.5 billion carrier bags in England since Government bag charge introduction

Tesco customers saved over 1.5 billion carrier bags in England since Government bag charge introduction
Tesco customers saved over 1.5 billion carrier bags in England since Government bag charge introduction

CHESHUNT, England, 2016-Oct-05 — /EPR Retail News/ — Tesco has revealed over 1.5 billion single-use carrier bags have been saved by Tesco customers in England since the introduction of the Government bag charge a year ago.

The figures represent an incredible 72% fall in the use of single-use plastic bags being used in Tesco stores.

Tesco customers shopping on tesco.com have also dramatically reduced the number of bags they use, with 57% of online shoppers selecting ‘bagless’ deliveries.

The Government’s 5p plastic bag charge was introduced in England on 5 October last year with the aim of cutting the number of plastic bags given out in shops and improving the environment.

Over the last year, the money raised by Tesco customers has been used to help fund 1170 community projects as part of Tesco’s Bags of Help initiative. The programme sees charities and community groups awarded grants ranging from £8,000 to £12,000, with Tesco customers able to choose which projects receive the most funding.

George Gordon, UK & ROI Communications Director at Tesco said: “We’re encouraging our customers to use fewer single-use bags, so these figures are really encouraging.

“Also the money raised from our customers buying bags is making a big difference to local communities across the country.

“Thanks to Bags of Help, nearly £12 million has been spent so far on local environmental improvement projects like parks, sports facilities, school playgrounds and community gardens – projects that have all been chosen by our customers.

“Going forward, we will help customers do even more for their communities by bringing together more projects for them to vote on every month.”

Tesco is working with the environmental improvement charity, Groundwork, to help deliver its Bags of Help scheme.

Groundwork’s national Chief Executive, Graham Duxbury, said: “Bags of Help is giving our communities both the funding and the support to create better, healthier and greener places for everyone to enjoy.

“We’ve been thrilled to see the diversity of projects that have applied for funding, ranging from outdoor classrooms, sports facilities, community gardens, play areas and everything in-between.

“They’re all fantastic projects that make a real difference in our neighbourhoods.”

The next customer vote will take place 31 October to 13 November in all of our stores and £12.5 million is up for grabs. The size of the grants available range from £8,000 to £12,000.

Tesco and Groundwork are always calling out for nominations from community groups and customers – find out more at www.tesco.com/bagsofhelp
