Gordy’s Market donated over 745,000 meals to the Feed My People Food Bank in 2016

CHIPPEWA FALLS, WISC, 2017-Feb-28 — /EPR Retail News/ — Gordy’s Market is pleased to announce the donation of over 950,000 pounds of food to the Feed My People Food Bank in 2016, representing over 745,000 meals.

Gordy’s donates their high-quality food items from each of its 26 grocery stores to Feed My People Food Bank on a daily basis with the food going back to each of its local community food pantries and non-profit organizations serving those in need.

“We are thrilled to be able to give back to our local communities,” said Dave Schafer, Gordy’s Market CEO. “Our communities, and those we serve, are the foundation in which our father (Gordy Schafer) built our family owned and operated business.”

Feed My People is the only food bank in west central Wisconsin, providing food to more than 125 hunger-relief organizations in 14 different counties.

Since 2002, Gordy’s has donated over 1.7 million pounds of food to their local communities.

“We are so appreciative of the relationship Gordy’s has with our hunger-relief partner programs. Donating nearly one million pounds of food in one year is breathtaking. The long-term impact of this generosity in communities throughout west central Wisconsin is truly significant,” said Emily Moore, Feed My People Executive Director.

CHIPPEWA FALLS, WISC, 2016-Nov-08 — /EPR Retail News/ — Gordy and Donna Schafer announce the official retirement of their sons Jeff Schafer, President of Gordy’s Market, and Rick Schafer, Vice President of Facilities for Gordy’s Market. Jeff and Rick worked for the family owned and operated business for over 80 years combined.

“It has been an incredible journey working with my family and the hardworking team at Gordy’s Market,” said Jeff, “I am proud to turn the business over  to the fully capable hands of my brothers, David and Dan, sister, Jenna, as well as the third generation of Schafer’s who are now an instrumental part of the family business.”

“We have truly enjoyed serving our communities, meeting so many of our customers and helping my parents [Gordy and Donna] further the family business,” said Rick.

David Schafer, Gordy’s Market Chief Financial Officer and son of Gordy and Donna Schafer, will assume the role of Chief Executive Officer. Jenna Schafer, Gordy’s Market Vice President of Information Technology and Human Resources and daughter of Gordy and Donna Schafer, will now serve as Chief Information Officer. Both Dave and Jenna began their careers as part-time clerks at Gordy’s Market on Lake Wissota and held positions of increasing responsibility in several functions and areas of the grocery business.

“We have a great deal of fond memories working with our brothers [Jeff and Rick] and have been lucky enough to grow Gordy’s Market from the one store on the Southside of Chippewa with our father [Gordy] and mother [Donna] to now 26,” said David, “Jenna and I are looking forward to the next 50 years and leading the team of 2,000 employees here at Gordy’s.”

Gordy’s Market re-opens its newly updated Birch Street location in Eau Claire, WI

Opened in 2005, the 65,000 sq. ft store recently received the retail chain’s updated décor and branding. New features include an easy-to-navigate layout, signage, lower prices on hundreds of everyday grocery items, including their new “Fresh Savings” program with markdowns on produce, meat and bakery items, as well as an expanded line of natural and organic products with their “Better for You” program.

“This is a significant milestone in Gordy’s brand evolution,” Dave Schafer, Gordy’s Market CFO, said in a release announcing the recent renovation. “The reinvention of our stores will place an emphasis on fresh, convenience, value and most importantly, friendly service. This signifies our commitment to our shoppers, as well as our dedication towards innovation and evolution in today’s fast pace grocery atmosphere.”

Other elements of the new decor include a continued focus on fresh departments like produce, meat and seafood, as well as a new mix of deli items such as salads, entrees, and signature sandwiches.

The new look and feel opens just in time for Gordy’s 50th Anniversary celebrations. A special ribbon cutting will take place at the store located at 2717 Birch Street in Eau Claire, on Tuesday, October 25, at 4pm with the Eau Claire Chamber of Commerce and a special cake from Gordy’s Bakery. The ribbon cutting is open to the general public and media.

CHIPPEWA FALLS, WISC, 2016-Aug-26 — /EPR Retail News/ — Gordy’s Market held their 12th Annual Feed My People Live Charity Auction on Friday, August 5 with all proceeds from the auction going to the Feed My People Food Bank of Wisconsin.

Feed My People is the only food bank in West Central Wisconsin, providing food to more than 125 hunger-relief organizations in 14 different counties. In total, Gordy’s raised over $62,000 for the food bank and the communities they serve.

The live auction included over 1,000 items and a special guest appearance by former Packers, Gilbert Brown and Tyrone Williams.

Gordy’s “Meat Guy,” Mike Vavra, also contributed to the excitement and awareness of the live auction and Feed My People Food Bank by embarking on a 100 mile ultramarathon. Mike began his run at Gordy’s Market in Rice Lake on Thursday, August 14 and completed his 100 mile adventure during the live auction held at Gordy’s Market in Eau Claire on Hamilton Avenue. Mike contributed over $1,800 from his run towards the final total raised.

The annual auction has now raised over $487,000 for the Feed My People Food Bank. With every $1 raised, Feed My People is able to provide $10 worth of food, or 6 pounds.

The Schafer Family bought their first store from the Schulz Brothers and Gordy gives credit to John Schulz who was a sausage maker with the Schulz Brothers business who stayed on with Gordy’s when they opened in 1966. “John Schulz got us started on the sausage making operation, which has grown to be a major part of our business today,” Gordy explains.

Gordy’s Market remains one of the longest locally owned and operated grocery stores in the Chippewa Valley. Though a great deal has changed and evolved over the past 50 years, two things remain the same, their focus on community and service.

CHIPPEWA FALLS, WISC, 2016-May-23 — /EPR Retail News/ — Gordy’s Market is pleased to announce they have opened their 26th grocery store in Hayward, WI.

Gordy’s reached an agreement with the Northern Lakes Cooperative to purchase the Cabin Stop Building in Hayward, WI on March 31, 2016.

The Hayward Family Restaurant, Beauty Nook, and Coop Pharmacy remained unchanged through the transition and have become lease tenants of Gordy’s Market.

“This agreement has brought an exciting new business to the Hayward area and will strengthen the Cooperative’s position within the market place for our other existing businesses,” stated Michael Covelli, General Manager of the Northern Lakes Cooperative.

“We offer fresh produce, meat, bakery, deli and our homemade Gordy’s Smokehouse products at low prices with family-friendly service, in addition to the great variety of beer, wine and spirits that the Cabin Stop previously carried,” stated Jeff Schafer, President of Gordy’s Market. “We look forward to getting to know our customers and surrounding organizations, and playing an active role in the Hayward community.”

Gordy’s Market will partner with the Northern Lakes Cenex Fuel Station to provide their Gas Rewards! program to customers in the surrounding community. Customers will be able to earn the Gas Rewards! fuel discounts at Gordy’s Market on specially marked products throughout the weekly ad and redeem these rewards at the Northern Lakes Cenex.

Gordy Schafer was introduced to the world of meat cutting at the age of 13 by his older brother, marking the beginning of Gordy’s career in the
grocery industry. “By the time I was 17 years old I knew what I wanted to do, I wanted to be in the grocery business,” Gordy reminisces, “and it took until I was 26 to get my first opportunity with our first store on the Southside of Chippewa Falls; 419 South Main, 715-723-4828, I remember all of those things, it was very important.”

Gordy’s Market announces the opening of its new store in South Broadway Street in Stanley, WI

CHIPPEWA FALLS, WISC, 2016-Apr-13 — /EPR Retail News/ — Gordy’s Market is pleased to announce they have opened their 25th store as of this morning. Gordy’s announced in September 2015 that they would be breaking ground in October 2015 for a new store on South Broadway Street in Stanley, WI.

“We are excited to join the community of Stanley and continue to expand our reach into Central Wisconsin,” said Jeff Schafer, President of Gordy’s Market. “We look forward to offering an excellent variety of fresh products, low prices and family-friendly services; the standards in which our family-owned business was founded on.”

The 20,000 square foot store will add over 60 new jobs to the Stanley community. The store will mirror the new store décor, debuted in their newest Chippewa Falls, WI location.  Gordy’s signature deli, bakery, meat, and produce departments will be featured, in addition to offering Organic items from their Full Circle line.

Gordy’s has also partnered with Dan Acker from the Stanley Travel Stop Shell Fuel Station adjacent to their new store on South Broadway Street to offer Gas Rewards! to Stanley shoppers. Customers will be able to earn the Gas Rewards! fuel discounts at Gordy’s Market on specially marked products throughout the weekly ad and redeem these rewards at the Stanley Travel Stop.

The building design was completed by River Valley Architects and construction was carried out by Hoeft Builders. The new store opens in time for Gordy’s 50th Anniversary.

Key features of the site include a more organized and aesthetically pleasing layout, a more engaging user experience with the addition of a “My Gordy’s” account and interactive weekly ad, an improved shopping list that integrates the weekly ad, recipes, as well as allowing items to be manually added, automatic Gas Rewards! tracking, and the capability to bookmark favorite pages to the homescreen of your mobile device.

SpartanNash will begin distributing private brand product to Gordy’s in mid-February and will be servicing Gordy’s as its primary distributor by May 2016.
