SPAR India launches online campaign #SayYesToMillets

India, 2017-Dec-13 — /EPR Retail News/ — Once a staple food source in India, Millets have fallen out of fashion over the last few decades – replaced by rice and wheat. Now, with the increase in diabetes and allergies such as gluten intolerance, this group of small seed grasses that have been widely cultivated as cereal crops, are making a comeback.

Realising the potential of the hardy, ancient millet seeds, SPAR India introduced a 25 day-long campaign in all SPAR Supermarkets in the country to create awareness about the health benefits and nutritional excellence of millets. In each store, a special zone was set up highlighting the entire millet range available. Nutritional information and delicious recipes were also displayed.

Some 500 school children from all over the country visited the millet zones in the SPAR stores and were informed about why the grains should be part of their diets. In addition to the millet zones instore, SPAR India executed the online campaign #SayYesToMillets, regularly posting nutritional facts, recipes and health benefits of millets on its various social media platforms.

To promote local farmers, the SPAR Natural range offered instore features a variety of products containing locally grown grains. These include savoury, sweet and ready-to-cook SPAR Own Brand products like Dosa mix and Millet-based health drinks.

Millets are a smart way of farming and eating. They can grow on marginal land and under harsh weather conditions. They are rich in nutrients, minerals, and fibre and can reduce the risks of heart diseases and obesity. SPAR India supports local farming community school in Soppahalli village, near Bangalore

India, 2017-Nov-27 — /EPR Retail News/ — Community involvement is a key aspect of SPAR’s vision and in India, SPAR has been taking steps to positively impact the lives of employees, customers and other members of the communities it serves. Recently, this led to an opportunity to support a local farming community school in Soppahalli village, near Bangalore.

SPAR India sources most of its fresh fruits & vegetables from the farmers of Soppahalli village, so when the team learnt that the village’s only school was in need of support, they decided to step in.

The school was closed for about six years and was reopened in 2017. At present, there are 16 students and only one teacher and like many schools in rural India, it lacks basic infrastructure.

A team of 20 SPAR India colleagues visited Soppahalli in October – interacting with the villagers and spending time with the school children. The team distributed notebooks and stationery among the students and also donated desks and benches to promote a better educational environment.

During the visit, the mood in the village was upbeat and the students were excited with the new additions to their school: “I like my new notebook and pencils,” said one student, while another added that not having to sit on the ground was a relief.

This was the first of many activities that SPAR India has planned for Soppahalli’s primary school and the village as a whole. The response has been overwhelming and has encouraged SPAR India to carry on adding value to the communities in which it operates with greater enthusiasm.

Available for download on iPhone® and Android™ devices, the Starbucks® India app offers customers the convenience of paying for their favorite Starbucks® beverages with their mobile device by scanning a bar code linked to their registered Starbucks Card. Customers also can register multiple Starbucks Cards onto their account within the Starbucks mobile app.

In addition to mobile payment, the app allows customers to register for the My Starbucks Rewards® program, track their rewards, manage their accounts, and gain access to new product information and promotions, all within one convenient app.

The Mobile Order & Pay feature allows customers to choose a store from a map view, browse, select and customize beverage and food items, including the option to modify size, number of espresso shots and dairy selections, view the estimated pick up times, and pre-pay for the order – all within the Starbucks mobile app. Every order is freshly prepared and ready for pick-up in the beverage handoff area. Members can easily collect Stars and earn rewards with Starbucks Rewards™ loyalty program.

INDIA: SPAR opens 18th Hypermarket in Paradise Mall, Nacharam

This is the 18th SPAR Hypermarket to open in the country, spread over seven states and nine cities, and the fourth in Hyderabad.

BESTSELLER FOUNDATION supports small scale farmers in India with Lawrencedale Agro Processing (LEAF) investment

BRANDE, Denmark, 2016-Sep-16 — /EPR Retail News/ — BESTSELLER FOUNDATION has become shareholder in Lawrencedale Agro Processing (LEAF) that supports small scale farmers at one end and providing top of the range products at the other.

80% of the population in India is involved in farming, but with an average plot size of just under three acres, the farmers as well as the retailers rely on middlemen to buy, transport and process the farm products before they reach the shops.

It is LEAF’s mission to change that. LEAF’s business model is designed to re-engineer the supply chain for farm produce in India – empowering the farmers, the retailers and the consumers.

On average fresh produce in India changes hands seven times which results in loss of and damage to produce as well as a reduction in profit at every step. Ultimately that means low profits for the farmer and mediocre products at relatively high prices for the consumer, with minimum profit for the retailer. LEAF’s business model is based on control of every step of the supply chain – from farm gate to shop shelves.

Active contributor to more efficient value chain

LEAF supplies 300 retailers (and counting) all over Southern India with high quality produce, cleaned and packed. The produce is sourced from 1,500 farmers who receive high quality inputs and training on good farming practices. At harvest time the farmers can sell their produce to LEAF and are thereby guaranteed a profit.

From 2014 to 2015 data collected by LEAF shows a 25% increase in average productivity among the farmers. Until 2020/-21 LEAF aims to grow its network of farmers to include over 10,000 farmers.

Goods and Service Tax (GST) can Alter Economic Prospects of India: Industry Experts

Chennai, India, 2016-Aug-12 — /EPR Retail News/ —  The long awaited Goods and Service TaGST1x (GST) has passed the last mile hurdle with country’s upper house of Parliament clearing the Bill on Wednesday, after much deliberations and amendments to appease the strong opposition. How does this tax reform going to benefit the retail sector which has been making a strident growth and become one of the fastest growing sectors? asked a few industry veterans about the pros and cons of GST implementation. Excerpts…

However, it will help traders and manufacturers to leverage business across India with effective supply chain and distribution of products.  The biggest relief is that GST will do away with the current C-form and interstate forms which are presently collected at the end of each year.”

BhaskarBhaskar Venkatraman, Director, Millennium India, a veteran in Point of Sale technology in India: “GST in the present format is going to benefit the economy, businesses and consumers alike. As it is going to replace 17 indirect taxes, tax procedures will be more simple and transparent. Apart from pushing up tax revenues, the corruption at check posts and slow-movement of trucks will become the things of the past. Since calculation of tax is going to be uniform across all states, finance people will heave a sigh of relief as they no longer muddle with complex forms while dealing with inter-state goods movements.”

AntonC Anton Jabadurai, Country Head, Bixolon India: “GST will facilitate the possibility of automation in tax calculation and goods processing, which will increase the requirement of POS hardware across India. Apart from smoothening the supply chain management, GST implementation will create a transparent tax regime across all states which will benefit both traders and end-customers. In the long run, the frequent price rise due to high transportation and warehousing cost will come down drastically.”

Anuj PuriAnuj Puri – Chairman & Country Head, JLL India: “The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is the most essential taxation reform which is going to alter India’s economic prospects. Single taxation, covering all goods and services, is a welcome change. GST will eliminate cascading effect of taxes, and will boost tax collection while reducing overall taxation levels. However, post GST, the results will be evident only after two-three years from now.”

Slated to increase the country’s GDP by one point, the GST era, which is going to unfurl from April 2017, will surely be the new chapter in India’s tax history post Independence. How far it will benefit the country and common man, one has to wait and see.

TAG Heuer Watches Launch India F1 Special Edition

Always at the forefront of timepiece technology TAG Heuer is also a major player in developing sporting success in the motorsport world.

The special ‘Mastering Speed for 150 Years’ logo has been placed on the dial at the 9 ’o clock and also features on the Sapphire Crystal case back. Both the chronograph and the stitching on the leather strap are adorned with traditional Indian saffron colours.

Taking its name from a south-American road race, the Carrera models are designed for drivers and feature an easy to read dial, important when you are driving at F1 or Rally driving speeds. Diamond Jewellery Market Growth in East

Recent figures suggest that the market for diamond jewellery in the near future is expected to be driven by increased growth in India, China and the Gulf.

These emerging Eastern markets have demonstrated significant growth in the past few years, with diamonds proving increasingly popular as both a luxury item and a long-term investment.

By 2015, it is predicted that India, China and the Gulf will equal or surpass the market share of the US, which currently stands at 35 to 40 per cent. In 2010, India and China were already up 31 and 25 per cent respectively.

However, with worldwide reserves of diamonds at an all-time low, this new growth in Eastern countries means the balance between supply and demand is set to become more mismatched than ever; forecasts warn that demand is likely to outpace lower levels of diamond supply for many years to come.

With diamonds only getting rarer, it’s likely that the value of diamonds will continue to ascend on a global scale in the same way that gold and silver prices have already, increasing the natural treasure’s worth in the long term.

Although diamond prices have already begun to reflect the imbalance between supply and demand, the view that diamonds are an ‘investment vehicle’ that has the potential to grow – or at least remain the same – means customers are continuing to buy.

When compared to the inflated prices of gold, diamonds also – for the time being – pose a more affordable alternative in an unsteady economy.

It is yet to be seen how the rising value of diamonds will affect the production and/or prices of popular jewellery brands, popular in both the East and West, which feature diamond-encrusted pieces in their collections. For now, however, fans of Pandora jewellery and the like need not worry.
