Hy-Vee Opens Telepharmacy Location at Manson, Iowa

Hy-Vee Opens Telepharmacy Location at Former Medicap Pharmacy

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa, 2017-Dec-06 — /EPR Retail News/ — Hy-Vee, Inc. has expanded its pharmacy access to Manson, Iowa, with a new telepharmacy location that opened last week.

“We are thrilled to provide Hy-Vee pharmacy services and maintain a personal pharmacist connection for residents in Manson through our new telepharmacy location,” said Kristin Williams, Hy-Vee’s senior vice president and chief health officer. “Enhancing health care for our customers is a top priority, and this location will fill prescriptions as well as offer additional health and wellness services that Hy-Vee is known for.”

Hy-Vee recently purchased the Medicap Pharmacy in Manson, which reopened as a telepharmacy under the Hy-Vee Pharmacy name on November 30. Medicap’s pharmacy technician has joined the Hy-Vee Pharmacy team, and a full-time pharmacist will be on site 16 hours per month.

At the telepharmacy, a prescription is processed similarly to how it would be at a Hy-Vee retail pharmacy. A pharmacist at the Fort Dodge Hy-Vee will verify the prescription for accuracy, as well as review the prescription for appropriateness in dosing and safety. Once the pharmacist completes an initial verification, a certified technician fills the prescription. The pharmacist then provides an additional verification by checking the accuracy of the filling process via digital equipment. Pharmacists are able to counsel the patient via iPad and telephone to answer any questions.

Williams said the new telepharmacy provides patients “with a direct line of communication to a pharmacist without having to leave their community.” In addition, the telepharmacy expands the selection of current over-the-counter product offerings

Hy-Vee, Inc. is an employee-owned corporation operating more than 245 retail stores across eight Midwestern states with sales of $10 billion annually. The supermarket chain is synonymous with quality, variety, convenience, healthy lifestyles, culinary expertise and superior customer service. Hy-Vee ranks in the Top 10 Most Trusted Brands and has been named one of America’s Top 5 favorite grocery stores. The company’s 85,000 employees provide “A Helpful Smile in Every Aisle” to customers every day. For additional information, visit www.hy-vee.com.

Apple to build new data center in Waukee, Iowa; facility will run entirely on renewable energy

Facility Outside Des Moines Will Run on 100 Percent Renewable Energy

Des Moines, Iowa, 2017-Aug-28 — /EPR Retail News/ — Apple today (AUGUST 24, 2017) announced plans to build a 400,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art data center in Waukee, Iowa, to better serve North American users of iMessage, Siri, the App Store and other Apple services. Like all Apple data centers, the new facility will run entirely on renewable energy from day one.

Apple’s investment of $1.3 billion will create over 550 construction and operations jobs in the Des Moines area, and the company is contributing up to $100 million to a newly created Public Improvement Fund dedicated to community development and infrastructure around Waukee.

“At Apple, we’re always looking at ways to deliver even better experiences for our customers. Our new data center in Iowa will help serve millions of people across North America who use Siri, iMessage, Apple Music and other Apple services — all powered by renewable energy,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “Apple is responsible for 2 million jobs in all 50 states and we’re proud today’s investment will add to the more than 10,000 jobs we already support across Iowa, providing even more economic opportunity for the community.”

The new Public Improvement Fund, to be established and managed by the City of Waukee, will support the development of community projects like parks, libraries and recreational spaces, as well as infrastructure needs. The first project the fund will support is construction of the Waukee Youth Sports Campus featuring a greenhouse, playground, fishing pier and fields for high school and public sporting events.

Apple will be working with local partners to invest in renewable energy projects from wind and other sources to power the data center. Apple has pledged to power all of its global operations with 100 percent renewable energy, and has already reached that goal in the US and 23 other countries.

“We’re honored Apple is choosing Iowa for the site of its most technologically advanced data center to date,” said Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds. “Apple’s commitment to innovation and renewable energy leadership mirrors our own. This investment in our state is vital as we continue to develop as a technology hub and grow our workforce.”

“Waukee is proud to welcome Apple,” said Waukee Mayor Bill Peard. “This new facility will bring with it high-quality jobs and important infrastructure developments for the city. We look forward to a continued partnership with Apple on this effort for decades to come.”

Construction on the data center is expected to start early next year and Apple plans to bring it online in 2020.

Apple is one of the biggest job creators in the United States, responsible for 2 million jobs. Last year, Apple spent over $50 billion with more than 9,000 US suppliers and manufacturers. Since the launch of the App Store in 2008, US developers have earned over $16 billion in App Store sales worldwide.

Apple revolutionized personal technology with the introduction of the Macintosh in 1984. Today, Apple leads the world in innovation with iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Apple TV. Apple’s four software platforms — iOS, macOS, watchOS and tvOS — provide seamless experiences across all Apple devices and empower people with breakthrough services including the App Store, Apple Music, Apple Pay and iCloud. Apple’s more than 100,000 employees are dedicated to making the best products on earth, and to leaving the world better than we found it.

Hy-Vee pharmacies in Iowa, Missouri, South Dakota and Wisconsin now offer naloxone without a prescription

West Des Moines, Iowa, 2017-May-12 — /EPR Retail News/ — To assist in the national crisis concerning opioid overdoses, Hy-Vee, Inc., announced today (May 10, 2017) that it now offers naloxone to customers without a prescription in four of the eight states where it has pharmacies.

All Hy-Vee pharmacy locations in Iowa, Missouri, South Dakota and Wisconsin offer naloxone without a prescription. The effort is meant to help prevent opioid-related deaths. While naloxone is known to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose, the medication has no effect if opioids are absent.

“We know the availability of this medication has the potential to save lives,” said Kristin Williams, senior vice president and chief health officer at Hy-Vee. “It’s vital that we do everything we can to assist those with a loved one who may encounter an opioid overdose by combining medications or by accidentally taking too much of a medication, being unaware of the life-threatening result.”

Naloxone is available at Hy-Vee pharmacies in nasal spray, as well as injection form by request.

Hy-Vee pharmacists will also ensure that patients and their family members understand how to recognize signs of an opioid overdose and how to administer the medication. While naloxone is not a cure for an opioid overdose, it can assist an individual until emergency treatment is available and long-term treatment is provided.

Naloxone can be administered to any person who has overdosed on a wide range of opioids, including hydrocodone, oxycodone, morphine and codeine, as well as heroin. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, opioids killed more than 33,000 people in 2015, more than any year on record. Nearly half of all opioid overdose deaths involve a prescription opioid.

Pharmacists in South Dakota and Missouri can dispense naloxone without a prescription through a physician-signed protocol with a designated pharmacy or pharmacy chain. The Iowa Board of Pharmacy and Wisconsin Pharmacy Examining Board have both implemented administrative rules outlining procedures and training requirements for participating pharmacies. Prior to these efforts in these states, the only way for individuals to obtain naloxone was through their doctor or other prescriber, followed by a trip to the pharmacy for the drug.

Opioid overdose-reversal medicine naloxone now available without prescription at CVS Pharmacies in Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa, 2017-Mar-31 — /EPR Retail News/ — Today (March 29, 2017), CVS Health officials (NYSE: CVS) joined Iowa Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds, Department of Public Health Director Gerd Clabaugh and Office of Drug Control Policy Director Steve Lukan in announcing the availability of the opioid overdose-reversal medicine naloxone without a prescription at all CVS Pharmacy locations in Iowa. CVS Health has established a standing order with physicians in Iowa that allows CVS Pharmacy to expand access to the medication in the state.

“Naloxone is a safe and effective antidote to opioid overdoses and by expanding access to this medication in our Iowa pharmacies by the use of a physician’s standing order for patients without a prescription, we can help save lives,” said Tom Davis, RPh, Vice President of Pharmacy Professional Practices at CVS Pharmacy. “We support expanding naloxone availability to give more people a chance to get the help they need for recovery and we applaud the State of Iowa for their leadership in the fight against drug abuse and addiction.”

“Thanks to action we have taken in Iowa, first responders, family members, and others can now obtain and administer Naloxone more easily,” said Reynolds. “I want to thank CVS Health for partnering in our multi-faceted approach to combat the opioid epidemic that has affected many Iowans. We need to continue to work together to prevent, treat and respond to this epidemic.”

Today’s naloxone announcement builds on CVS Health’s longstanding commitment to helping communities address and prevent drug abuse. CVS Health has also joined with the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids to create the Medication Disposal for Safer Communities Program, which donates disposal units to local police departments, providing a safe and environmentally friendly way to dispose of unwanted medication. Police departments in Iowa can apply to receive a drug collection unit at www.cvs.com/safercommunities.

Additionally, CVS Health has launched digital resources on its website CVS.com that give patients and families a single destination to learn more about drug abuse prevention. And, in 2015, CVS Health launched a community outreach program called Pharmacists Teach, which brings local pharmacists to high school health classes to talk to students about the dangers of drug abuse. More than 200,000 students have already taken part in the program. High school teachers and administrators in Iowa can learn more about bringing Pharmacists Teach to their school at www.CVSHealth.com.

With the addition of Iowa, CVS Pharmacy now dispenses naloxone to patients without an individual prescription in these 41 states: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

Walgreens drugstores installs safe medication disposal kiosk in Iowa

DEERFIELD, Ill., 2016-Aug-13 — /EPR Retail News/ — Walgreens today (10 August 2016) is launching its safe medication disposal kiosk program in Iowa with the installation of drug take-back kiosks at eight Walgreens drugstores in the state. The launch is part of Walgreens effort, announced in February, to install safe medication disposal kiosks at more than 500 of its drugstores around the country.

Walgreens will be joined today by Governor Terry Branstad, Attorney General Tom Miller, House Majority Leader Chris Hagenow, Senate Republican Leader Charles Schneider and Steve Lukan, Director, Governor’s Office of Drug Control Policy, to kick off the program.

The kiosks provide a safe and convenient way year-round to dispose of unwanted, unused or expired prescriptions, including controlled substances, and over-the-counter medications at no cost.

“By making safe medication disposal kiosks available in select Iowa stores and expanding to other states this year, Walgreens is taking an important first step to reduce the misuse of medications throughout the country and curb the rise in overdose deaths,” said Richard Ashworth, Walgreens president of pharmacy and retail operations. “Everyone has a role to play in minimizing prescription drug abuse, and we are committed to being part of a comprehensive solution to reverse this epidemic.”

Safe medication disposal kiosks are currently available in more than 300 Walgreens pharmacies across 23 states and Washington, D.C. The kiosks are available during regular pharmacy hours (24 hours a day at most kiosk locations) and offer one of the best ways to ensure medications are not accidentally used or intentionally misused by someone else.

Drug abuse continues to be a public health and safety risk. More Americans die every day from drug overdoses than from motor vehicle crashes, according to the Office of National Drug Control Policy. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s 2014 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, almost 15 million Americans misused a prescription drug in 20141, and that same year the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported a national total of 47,055 drug overdose deaths, which include deaths from prescription and illicit drugs. That is a 6.5 percent increase from 2013 and a 140 percent increase since 2000.2

In addition to offering a year-round solution for individuals to dispose of their medications, Walgreens continues to participate in DEA sponsored National Prescription Drug Take Back Days, serving as a collection point in communities for law enforcement to collect unwanted, unused or expired medications for safe disposal. The company is also collaborating with the American Pharmacists Association Institute on Alcoholism and Drug Dependencies to continue to offer a substance abuse education program for pharmacists and student pharmacists.

States where Walgreens Safe Medication Disposal Program has been implemented:

Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, District of Columbia, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin*

*Installation has begun in the state and is expected to be complete in August.
