Meijer opens its first two Wisconsin supercenters in Grafton and Kenosha

Grafton and Kenosha supercenters are the first of estimated $750 million investment in state

MILWAUKEE, Wis., 2015-6-24 — /EPR Retail News/ — Meijer moved into its sixth state, opening its first two Wisconsin supercenters to local customers today, Co-Chairman Hank Meijer announced. The 192,000-square-foot stores in Grafton and Kenosha have created nearly 600 jobs, and are the first in the state to carry the retailer’s unique offerings that include fresh, high-quality produce and groceries, general merchandise and full-service pharmacies.

“We are proud to open our doors on this first historic day in Wisconsin,” Hank Meijer said. “Since announcing our intention more than two years ago, we’ve done our best to understand the Wisconsin market and truly become a part of the community. We think our neighbors in southeastern Wisconsin will be really pleased with the fresh options they can experience beginning today.”

The Grand Rapids, Mich.-based retailer is the pioneer of the one-stop shopping concept and committed to offering easy, affordable solutions to shoppers. The new stores are built to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards and will be open 24 hours a day. Meijer now operates 219 stores in six states and employs more than 65,000 team members throughout the Midwest.

In addition to the retailer’s traditional grocery, merchandise and garden center at each store, the new pharmacies offer drive-thru pick up and the Meijer free prescription program. Since its inception in 2006, the program has filled nearly 26 million free prescriptions, saving Meijer customers more than $376 million.

Opening celebrations began with a ribbon-cutting event at each store, followed by remarks from Meijer leadership and local officials. The stores demonstrated their commitment to the community by making donations to two local organizations.

In Kenosha, Meijer donated $25,000 to Boys & Girls Club of Kenosha to revamp and reopen its “Kids in the Kitchen” program, which teaches youth members about healthy eating habits, as well as how to prepare and cook fresh meals and snacks for their families. In Grafton, Meijer donated $25,000 to the Village of Grafton to install five new informational kiosks and new pavilion as part of the community’s Riverwalk.

As part of its ongoing community support, Meijer donates more than 6 percent of its net profit to charitable organizations annually, and each of its stores works with local food pantries and banks to help fight hunger at the local level. Since 2008, the retailer’s Simply Give program has generated more than $15.5 million for its food pantry partners throughout the Midwest.

In August, Meijer will open two additional stores in Wauwatosa and Oak Creek. The retailer has plans for continued growth in Wisconsin.

“It’s been nearly 20 years since we’ve chosen to enter a new state, so we are grateful for the enthusiastic response we’ve received as we’ve built these first stores,”  Meijer President J.K. Symancyk said. “We are serious about our commitment to Wisconsin and plan to add two to three new stores per year through 2019.”

Meijer to open and operate full-service retail pharmacy on the campus of the Spectrum Health Medical Center

Partnership expected to bring convenience to patients

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., 2015-4-2 — /EPR Retail News/ — Spectrum Health and Meijer have signed a letter of intent to explore the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based retailer opening and operating a full-service retail pharmacy on the campus of the Spectrum Health Medical Center.

A final agreement would allow Meijer to operate a comprehensive retail pharmacy in Butterworth Hospital, building upon a national growing trend to offer improved access and convenience to patients who choose to have prescriptions filled before leaving the hospital.

“As part of our goal to transform the care model, we are working to help patients obtain their medications more efficiently. We expect this move to help drive better health outcomes for our patients and enhance their satisfaction and overall experience,” Spectrum Health Hospital Group President Christina Freese-Decker said. “The relationship with Meijer is built upon a partnership of mutual respect and serves as an extension of Spectrum Health’s commitment to positively impact the health and wellness of the communities we serve.”

“The genuine care provided at our pharmacies continues to differentiate Meijer as a leader in the industry,” Meijer President J.K. Symancyk said. “That role will continue to evolve as individuals become more focused on leading healthy lifestyles. We believe this partnership with Spectrum Health continues this evolution while providing an opportunity to improve patient health.”

The pharmacy will provide patients, families, employees and hospital providers with an on-campus option for medications and over-the-counter products. This pharmacy would also include access to the Meijer free prescription program, which has filled more than 23 million prescriptions, saving customers nearly $350 million since 2006 when the program began, as well as easy prescription transfers to one of its 213 locations and eligibility for the Meijer Pharmacy Rewards program offered through mPerks.

Meijer LPGA Classic presented by Kraft opens volunteer registration earlier to attract even more volunteers for this year’s tournament

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., 2015-3-30 — /EPR Retail News/ — After a successful inaugural tournament that boasted more than 700 volunteers, the Meijer LPGA Classic presented by Kraft opened volunteer registration one month earlier than last year in hopes of attracting even more volunteers for this year’s tournament.

The retailer also worked with its tournament sponsors to increase last year’s $1.5 million purse to $2 million.

“We are dedicated to making the Meijer LPGA Classic presented by Kraft a notable stop on the LPGA tour,” Meijer President J.K. Symancyk said. “The community really embraced the tournament last year, and we look forward to partnering with the LPGA to make every aspect even better.”

The Meijer LPGA Classic presented by Kraft will host a full field of 144 players playing 72 holes of stroke play over four days of competition July 20-26 at Blythefield Country Club. With Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Meijer as title sponsor, the driving mission of the tournament is focused on feeding the hungry and improving the quality of life within the region. The tournament will coincide with the retailer’s Simply Give program, which has generated nearly $14 million for food pantries in the communities it serves.

“Hosting the top women golfers in the world would not be possible without the help of the hundreds of volunteers needed to make every aspect of the tournament run seamlessly,” said Lesley Baker, tournament director of the Meijer LPGA Classic presented by Kraft. “We were overwhelmed by the positive support we received from the community last year, and this year we need even more.”

The event will need an estimated 800 volunteers, ranging in responsibilities from marshals and standard bearers to transportation and assisting the media. Volunteers can indicate their first, second and third choices, and will be assigned to a committee on a first-come, first-served basis.

The volunteer fee is $55 and includes two official tournament golf shirts, one tournament hat, a volunteer badge valid for weeklong tournament access and parking, four weekly grounds tickets for guests of the volunteer’s choice, an invitation to the annual volunteer appreciation party, and meals and beverages during assigned shifts.

Meijer gave 213 unsuspecting customers their entire shopping cart filled with gifts and groceries as a holiday gift

Retailer collects customer reactions in video of the fun-filled events

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., 2014-12-18 — /EPR Retail News/ — Meijer made the holidays very merry for 213 unsuspecting customers recently when those shoppers received a big surprise upon checkout – their entire shopping cart filled with gifts and groceries given to them as a holiday gift by the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based retailer.

During the Very Merry Meijer event, one customer at each of the retailer’s 213 stores across the Midwest was randomly selected on Dec. 13 to receive their purchases free – an unprecedented gesture in its 80-year history.

“The holidays are a time for kindness and joy, and the Very Merry Meijer event was a perfect opportunity for us to share the spirit of the season with those we hold dear: our customers,” Co-Chairman Hank Meijer said. “Our family has always believed that our customers don’t need us, but that we need them. That philosophy still guides us today. We are very thankful for our customers, and wanted to find a special way to wish them a very Merry Christmas.”

The Very Merry Meijer event resulted in tens of thousands of dollars in “gifts” to Meijer customers – with shopping carts ranging from $350 to upwards of $1,200 in value – along with a mixture of emotions that spurred tears, laughter and even speechlessness from very happy customers. For some, the surprise brought hope in the true meaning of Christmas; for others it provided tremendous relief during a time that can be quite stressful.

Meijer released a video today that showcases how the retailer surprised its customers during the busiest holiday season of the year. In most cases, the store director revealed the gift upon checkout, but Hank Meijer, his brother and Co-Chairman Doug Meijer, and Meijer President J.K. Symancyk also helped spread holiday cheer.

“As a retailer, we work hard all year long to provide value to our customers through the quality products we sell, the experience we provide and the many ways we offer savings,” Symancyk said. “The Very Merry Meijer event was our fun way of making the season bright for our customers. That is what the holidays are all about – simple acts of kindness.”

The Very Merry Meijer event resulted in some very happy customers, but it also made an impact on the Meijer team members who were involved in the surprise.

“We know the holidays can be a stressful time of year for many reasons. But, this is also the time of year that is full of joy and laughter,” Doug Meijer said. “The Meijer team members and I who played Santa may have been more excited before, during and after our surprises than the recipients. That’s how much fun we had spreading Christmas cheer.”

Meijer LPGA Classic presented by Kraft will return to Grand Rapids on July 20-26, 2015 at Blythefield Country Club

Excitement builds for 2015 on heels of successful inaugural tournament

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., 2014-10-31— /EPR Retail News/ — After a successful inaugural tournament that generated $600,000 for food pantries across the Midwest, the Meijer LPGA Classic presented by Kraft will return to Grand Rapids in 2015 for another week of community events and the best women golfers in the world.

The tournament will be held July 20-26, 2015 at Blythefield Country Club, and will once again benefit the retailer’sSimply Give program that restocks the shelves of food pantries across the Midwest.

During the inaugural tournament Aug. 7-10, the crowds exceeded expectations with more than 40,000 spectators coming out for the week. Rookie superstar Mirim Lee claimed her first LPGA Tour victory with a birdie on the second hole of a playoff against fellow South Korean Inbee Park.

“The success of the Meijer LPGA Classic presented by Kraft greatly exceeded our expectations, and afforded us an unmatched opportunity to raise awareness and funding for hunger relief in the Midwest,” Meijer President J.K. Symancyk said. “The community really embraced this tournament, and we look forward to bringing another exciting event to them next year.”

The praise for the inaugural event didn’t stop at the monetary impact on the hungry; it made a tremendous impact on the LPGA professionals during their week in Grand Rapids.

Runner-up Inbee Park noticed the crowds cheering her on throughout the week.

“I was really surprised how they love golf here in Michigan and how supportive they were,” Park said. “I’m very thankful that they are supporting golf and women’s golf.”

Stacy Lewis saw the value in adding locations like Grand Rapids to the LPGA schedule.

“I think just by the fans and all the crowds we’ve had this week, it shows that we need to be here,” said Lewis, the No. 1 ranked player in the world during the Meijer LPGA Classic. “We had a great first year.”

Some even spoke on the excitement for years to come.

“This was a first-class event,” Suzann Pettersen said. “The venue, great golf course. I’m happy to be back here next year.”
