Kohl’s donates $750,000 to support the new Hunger Task Force MyPlate initiative

MENOMONEE FALLS, Wis, 2017-Feb-03 — /EPR Retail News/ — Kohl’s (NYSE: KSS) announced a donation of $750,000 to support the new Hunger Task Force MyPlate initiative, a healthy eating guide influenced by the USDA MyPlate food model. The program raises the awareness of incorporating all five food groups and encourages the public to be conscious of how their food donations impact healthy eating. Hunger Task Force has adopted this new food bank model to set higher standards for food donations.

“Kohl’s is proud to partner with Hunger Task Force to support the MyPlate model, which encourages the donation and consumption of healthy foods for deserving families,” said Jen Johnson, Kohl’s vice president of communications. “It’s a smart, simple approach that has a healthy impact on our community.”

The majority of Kohl’s funding will purchase nearly 700,000 pounds of food in 2017, including boxes of 1% dairy milk, cans of low-sodium green beans, bags of whole grain brown rice, naturally sweet canned pears and peaches in 100% juice, and pinto beans packed with plant-based protein. This purchased food will offset the substantial cost of supplying the Hunger Task Force network with the healthy, nutritious foods needed to stock MyPlate-certified pantries.

“Hunger Task Force is the first food bank in the country to operate under a healthy food model – the first MyPlate food bank,” said Sherrie Tussler, Hunger Task Force executive director. “We have set the standard on the importance of serving healthy food to the community, and this generous support from Kohl’s will help ensure we can provide nutritious foods to hungry Milwaukee families.”

Several food pantries within the Hunger Task Force network, including the Riverwest Food Pantry and Ebenezer Food Pantry and Clinic, are already operating under Hunger Task Force MyPlate guidelines. Hunger Task Force will be working with all of its network sites to implement the MyPlate model.

Kohl’s funding will also continue to support summer supper purchases. From June through August, the federal Summer Food Service Program provides mostly breakfast and lunch at summer meal sites, meaning many hungry children do not have access to healthy suppers. Hunger Task Force will direct Kohl’s funding to purchase nearly 65,000 summer suppers, ensuring that Milwaukee children in need who do not attend daycare or elementary school can receive three meals a day.

The donation is made possible through Kohl’s philanthropic program, Kohl’s Cares®, which sells children’s books and toys and donates 100 percent of the net profit to benefit children’s initiatives. More information about the Hunger Task Force MyPlate model is available here.

Kohl’s to open new e-commerce distribution center at Plainfield, Indiana

MENOMONEE FALLS, Wis., 2016-Sep-08 — /EPR Retail News/ — Kohl’s (NYSE: KSS) has closed on the purchase of a building for a new e-commerce distribution center located at 9998 All Points Parkway in Plainfield, Ind. Expected to open in summer 2017, the 937,000-square-foot facility will enhance the company’s ability to fulfill Kohls.com purchases and serve customers nationwide.

“Our investment in a new e-commerce fulfillment center is one of the many ways we are supporting omnichannel fulfillment. This is in addition to our capability to ship merchandise from our entire network of more than 1,100 Kohl’s stores nationwide and the option for customers to buy online and pick up their purchase at their local Kohl’s store, two initiatives that came to life last year,” said Sona Chawla, Kohl’s chief operating officer. “We are committed to providing an easy experience to Kohl’s customers and a key part of this is being able to deliver amazing products to them more quickly and efficiently. The new e-commerce fulfillment center will be in place to support the holiday season in 2017.”

Upon opening the new Plainfield facility, Kohl’s will operate a total of 14 distribution centers across the country. This will be the company’s fifth distribution center dedicated to serving Kohls.com customers, with other e-commerce fulfillment centers located in San Bernardino, Calif.; Monroe, Ohio; Edgewood, Md. and DeSoto, Texas.

Hiring for the facility will begin in spring 2017. Kohl’s expects to hire approximately 300 full- and 600 part-time associates over a three-year period. Applicants interested in career opportunities are encouraged to visit KohlsCareers.com for more information and a list of available positions.

The facility is one of the ways that Kohl’s is maximizing omnichannel fulfillment. In 2015, Kohl’s rolled out the capability to ship online orders made on Kohls.com from Kohl’s network of more than 1,100 stores across the country. In addition, by choosing the Buy Online, Pick Up in Store option, customers can buy items online and pick up in store at their local Kohl’s store with premier, designated parking for customers picking up their purchases.

Kohl’s continues its Wild Theater program at the Milwaukee County Zoo following $1.4 million donation to Zoological Society of Milwaukee

MENOMONEE FALLS, Wis, 2016-Aug-31 — /EPR Retail News/ — Kohl’s (NYSE: KSS) announced a donation of $1.4 million over three years to the Zoological Society of Milwaukee to continue the Kohl’s Wild Theater (KWT) program at the Milwaukee County Zoo. The award-winning, interactive theater program uses drama, puppetry and song to bring important conservation messages to children and families. The donation comes from Kohl’s philanthropic program, Kohl’s Cares, which sells children’s books and soft toys and donates 100 percent of the net profit to benefit children’s initiatives.

An initial $1 million donation from Kohl’s Cares in 2010 helped create the Kohl’s Wild Theater program. Since then, it has quickly become the country’s largest zoo theater program. Kohl’s Wild Theater performances are free with admission to all zoo attendees. Performing teams also travel to schools and local community events at no charge. Recognized as one of the country’s finest zoological attractions, the Milwaukee County Zoo serves more than 1.3 million people each year.

The Kohl’s Wild Theater program is an engaging way to bring conservation lessons to life for thousands of Wisconsin children every year,” said Jen Johnson, Kohl’s vice president of corporate communications. “This fun, informative theater program will continue so more families can learn about conservation and gain insights into how they can contribute to the welfare of wildlife.”

The Kohl’s Wild Theater program consists of two main components:

Kohl’s Wild Theater: Located in the children’s area of the zoo, Kohl’s Wild Theater hosts performances focused on conservation and the importance of caring for the animals and the environment. Zoo performances take place during the summer months between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Shorter plays are also performed throughout the day at various animal exhibit areas in the Zoo.

Kohl’s Wild Theater Performances in the Community: The program features a year-round community outreach program, where Kohl’s Wild Theater performers travel into the community to present 30- to 45-minute performances at various venues, including schools, libraries, community centers and major special events. The program is provided, free of charge, within a one-hour radius of the Milwaukee County Zoo.

“Kohl’s Wild Theater is one of the best zoo theater programs in the country thanks to Kohl’s tremendous support,” said Caroline Krider, Zoological Society of Milwaukee chairman of the board. “We’re thrilled and honored to continue our partnership with Kohl’s to provide quality conservation education programming designed to inspire children to care more about the animals and the world we share.”

Since 2010, Kohl’s Department Stores together with Kohl’s Cares have combined to give nearly $70 million to support charitable initiatives in the metro-Milwaukee area, including more than $4 million to the Zoological Society of Milwaukee. To date, the Kohl’s Cares cause merchandise program has raised nearly $300 million for children’s initiatives nationwide. To learn more about having a Kohl’s Wild Theater performance at your school or event, or for more information on the Kohl’s Wild Theater program, visit WildTheater.org.
