Marks & Spencer announces details of its five point action plan to tackle the industry-wide challenge of reducing levels of Campylobacter in whole chickens

  • Five point action plan rolling out across M&S supply chain
  • M&S plan implemented since September already seeing step change in results

LONDON, 2014-11-21 — /EPR Retail News/ — Marks & Spencer (M&S) today announces details of its five point action plan to tackle the industry-wide challenge of reducing levels of Campylobacter in whole chickens.

The measures, which have been in place for the majority of M&S chickens sold since the end of September, include even clearer front-of-pack labelling and double bagging whole chickens so they can be placed straight into the oven without the need to unwrap and handle the chicken. Action is also underway on M&S farms with bonuses paid to farmers who produce Campylobacter free farms and innovative new safety technology in place on the production line.

Steve Rowe, Executive Director of Food at Marks & Spencer, said: “We take safety extremely seriously and have introduced innovative measures that ensure the highest standards and make it easy for our customers. The plan is working and we are committed to playing a leading role in the efforts to reduce levels of Campylobacter in the poultry industry.”

Steve Wearne, Director of Policy at the Food Standards Agency, said: “I am very pleased to see this impressive initiative by M&S and 2 Sisters. Campylobacter is a serious issue and there is no single solution to the problem. I believe the best way to drive down Campylobacter levels is by adopting the sort of integrated approach along the food chain demonstrated by M&S and 2 Sisters. I look forward to seeing the impact of these interventions in the future results of our ongoing survey into levels of Campylobacter in chicken on retail sale.”

Ranjit Singh, Chief Executive of 2 Sisters Food Group, said: “We are delighted to be leading the way in partnership with Marks & Spencer on campylobacter reduction.”

The M&S five point action plan has been implemented with 2 Sisters Food Group (M&S’ biggest supplier of whole chickens) since the end of September and will be rolled out to the remainder of the M&S supply chain by the end of the year.

LONDON, 2014-10-23— /EPR Retail News/ — Marks & Spencer (M&S) has announced that it is installing the UK’s largest single roof mounted solar panel array on its East Midlands distribution centre in Castle Donington.

The project, which is expected to be completedin early 2015, is being worked on in partnership with Amber Infrastructure. The solar PV system will span the site’s 900,000 sq ft roof and will generate over 5,000 MWh of electricity per year, enough to power 1,190 houses.

The 24,272 PV panel structure will lower M&S’s carbon footprint by 48,000 tonnes over 20 years. The energy generated will be enough to make the fully automated distribution centre, which is big enough to hold 11 football pitches, close to self-sufficient during daylight hours.

The solar PV roof is one of a number of onsite renewable projects set to be announced by M&S over the next 12 months. These projects will helptake the retailer one step closer to fulfilling its commitment to ensure 50% of the electricity used in our building operations comes from small scale renewable sources by 2020.

Hugo Adams, Director of Property at M&S, said:

“This further enhances the sustainability credentials of our BREEAM Excellent Castle Donington site. Coupled with one of Europe’s largest solar thermal walls, the new solar PV system will make the building one of the most sustainable distribution centres in the world. We look forward to working with Amber Infrastructure on what is an industry leading project in terms of scale.”

Amber Infrastructure will be supplying and installing the 6.1MWp solar panel system. M&S has agreed a 20 year Power Purchase Agreement to purchase all of the electricity generated by the solar PV system.

Tom O’Shaughnessy, Partnerat Amber Infrastructure, said:

“M&S’s Plan A commitment is industry leading. The project is aligned with Amber’s pioneering approach to the provision of renewable generation and energy efficiency solutions and will create a template for the delivery of similar schemes across the UK, supporting the stated objectives of DECC and wider UK Government. We look forward to revealing the finished array in 2015.”

Marks & Spencer to reduce its carbon footprint by over 6,400 tonnes with the acquisition of 35,000 Mega-Watt hours of biomethane certificates

LONDON, 2014-9-9 — /EPR Retail News/ — Marks & Spencer (M&S) has agreed a landmark deal with Future Biogas for the purchase of 35,000 Mega-Watt hours of biomethane certificates, a move which will reduce its carbon footprint by over 6,400 tonnes and source the equivalent amount of energy to heat 15 M&S Simply Food stores all year round.

Biomethane gas is 50 per cent more carbon efficient than average gas supplies and is generated by anaerobic digestion, fuelled by farm waste. The biomethane gas will be produced at the Vulcan Anaerobic Digestion (AD) plant near Doncaster using break crops (non-commercial crops used for soil regeneration) from farms across Yorkshire and the North East. The gas is then pumped into the national grid. M&S’ deal with Future Biogas funds the production and M&S benefits from the carbon reduction through the certification scheme.

It also provides significant revenues for farmers, giving break crops a commercial route to market not previously available.

Gio Patellaro, M&S Head of Energy Supply & Risk said:
“Over the past couple of years, M&S has worked tirelessly to improve its carbon efficiency and innovate in sustainability. As the first UK retailer to buy biomethane to use in this way, we are blazing a trail in the market place that we hope others will follow. With the help of Future Biogas, this deal takes us one step further in our commitment to ensure 50% of the energy used in M&S buildings comes from certified green biomethane sources by 2020.”

Since the inception of its “Plan A” programme, M&S has been a leader and innovator in supporting a renewable energy generation, including contracting directly with renewable generators under its award winning Price Guarantee Agreement structure.

Philipp Lukas, Future Biogas Managing Director said:
“We are thrilled to be working with Marks & Spencer on this exciting and new venture. We look forward to supplying biomethane to M&S to help them deliver their market leading commitment to carbon reduction.”
