Meijer helps customers celebrate Chinese New Year with easy-to-make recipes

Meijer helps customers celebrate Chinese New Year with easy-to-make recipes

Meijer chefs share simple recipes to help you celebrate the Year of the Dog

Grand Rapids, Mich., 2018-Feb-13 — /EPR Retail News/ — The Spring Festival of Chinese New Year kicks off on Feb. 16, celebrating the Year of the Dog. Although celebrations vary by region and household, they all have one custom in common: creating dishes that give blessings in the New Year. Vegetables are staple items in many Chinese New Year dishes because they symbolize the coming of spring.

If you are looking to create your own celebration, the Meijer produce buyers and Meijer Test Kitchen Chefs Chad Beuter and Brian C. Williams put together a list of great fruits and veggies that are featured in many Chinese New Year dishes and created four easy-to-make recipes to try.

  • Bok Choy: This vegetable is a variety of Chinese cabbage with smooth, tapering leaves. Bok Choy is a variety of Chinese cabbage that’s high in vitamins A and C, and tastes great in a stir-fry, soups or served steamed as a side dish. The leaves have a hint of spice, while the stalks are crisp and sweet.
  • Kumquat: This fruit is quintessential to a Chinese New Year celebration. The Chinese were the first to cultivate the Kumquat. According to a post on SFGate.com, the Chinese often display Kumquats in their home during the Chinese New Year celebration because they symbolize prosperity and are often presented as gifts. As for taste, the Kumquatgrowers states that Kumquats have a distinct flavor that is both sweet and tart. It is the only citrus fruit that can be eaten “skin and all.”
  • Opo Squash: According to CooksInfo.com, Opo Squash is not actually a squash but a gourd. Its skin can be yellow to green and stays tough after cooking. Inside, it has white, firm flesh with edible seeds, similar to zucchini. Smaller and young Opo Squash are sweeter. Peel the skin from the Opo Squash before cooking and prepare it as you would a zucchini.

Try Bok Choy, Kumquats and Opo Squash together in Chilled Opo Squash Noodles with Spicy Shrimp & Bok Choy recipe. Watch the recipe demonstration video here.

  • Chinese Eggplant: Although often thought of as a vegetable, eggplant is actually a fruit. Chinese eggplant is long and thin in appearance, with dark purple skin that is tender and cooks fast. Its flesh is white, semi-firm and nearly seedless. Of all eggplant varieties, a Chinese eggplant is described as having a sweet and mild flavor. Chinese eggplant is known for its antioxidant properties due to containing rich levels of anthocyanins, a pigment that is responsible for the fruit’s deep purple skin coloring. Chinese eggplant is versatile and taste great braised, in stir fry, grilled, fried and baked. Recipe to try: Sweet & Sour Eggplant. Watch the recipe demonstration video here.
  • Chinese Long Beans: Chinese long beans are different from the common green bean. They grow as a vine and can grow more than a yard in length, hence the nickname, “yard beans.” Although, Chinese Long Beans have a similar taste to green beans, they have a different texture. Plus, green beans can be boiled, which doesn’t work for Chinese Long Beans. According to Serious Eats, Chinese Long Beans are best cooked with oil: sautéed, stir-fried or deep-fried. Their flavor intensifies and their texture remains tight and juicy. Recipe to try: Chinese Long Beans with Spicy Pork. Watch the recipe demonstration video here.
  • Ginger Root: Ginger Root is a common ingredient used in most Asian dishes and folk medicine. It adds a hot and fragrant kick, and is used to flavor many Chinese seafood, meat and vegetarian dishes. It is also widely recognized that Ginger Root aids in digestion. Recipe to try: Ginger & Shiitake Braised Chicken Thighs with Scallion Pancakes. Watch the recipe demonstration video here.

Meijer unveils newly-remodeled Rockford Supercenter; the 22nd Midwest location to be remodeled this year

Meijer unveils newly-remodeled Rockford Supercenter; the 22nd Midwest location to be remodeled this year

Rebuilt Michigan store is 22nd Midwest location to be remodeled this year

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., 2017-Dec-12 — /EPR Retail News/ — Meijer celebrated the completion of this year’s 22nd newly-remodeled supercenter today (December 8, 2017) in Rockford, Mich., President and CEO Rick Keyes announced. The updated store has been designed to adapt to the needs of today’s customers, with an enhanced prepared foods area for grab-and-go convenience that offers Pan Asian cuisine, a pizzeria, fresh sushi and a sandwich shop.

In 2017, the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based retailer aggressively remodeled stores in key Midwestern markets, such as Cincinnati, Louisville, Indianapolis, and suburban Chicago. Six Meijer supercenters in Michigan alone were updated, including Mt. Pleasant, Grand Rapids and in the Detroit area. This year’s remodel investment means that Meijer has now remodeled more than one quarter of its 235 stores in the last two years.

“We continue to focus on updating our stores to bring the best retail experience to our customers,” said Keyes. “This was a major remodel, and we are very pleased to make this investment and renew our commitment to Rockford and the Algoma Township community.”

Updates to the Rockford supercenter began in June and were completed in six months, following Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards. Improvements include an enhanced store layout with an updated pharmacy area, expanded grocery and health and beauty sections, updated apparel department and an all new pet department providing a specialty pet store feel.

Key updates also include lighting, heating, refrigeration and parking lot improvements. The remodeled 192,000-square-foot Rockford store also provides the Midwestern retailer another flagship location, where the company can test new innovations and programs for consideration at other stores.

The company celebrated the new store’s completion with a ribbon-cutting event, followed by remarks from Meijer officials and State Sen. Peter MacGregor, and featured performances from the Rockford High School Pep Band.

As part of the celebration, Meijer will host a Family-Fun Day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9 at the Rockford store. Customers can also enter to win a $500 shopping spree Dec. 8 and 9.

“Our customers in the Rockford community have been very patient during the last six months, so we’re very pleased that they can finally enjoy the benefits of this great new store,” Keyes said.

Meijer helps customers get into the holiday spirit with more than 400,000 holiday-related apparel items

Meijer helps customers get into the holiday spirit with more than 400,000 holiday-related apparel items

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., 2017-Dec-11 — /EPR Retail News/ — The holiday sweater craze continues to gain popularity as the season’s parties and celebrations kick off. Traditionally, Meijer sells more than 400,000 holiday-related apparel items for the family in December, including sweatshirts, tunics, leggings, sleepwear and sweaters – otherwise known as the so-called “ugly” holiday sweaters trend.

According to Fast Company, today the ugly holiday sweater craze has morphed from cottage sensation to a million-dollar, year-round industry. The trend is not limited to people. Meijer pet buyers report that they move more than 10,000 units of pet-related holiday apparel, including “ugly” holiday sweaters specific to pets, before Thanksgiving and sales remain steady throughout the holiday season.

While there is no shortage of holiday sweater ideas, the apparel buyers at Meijer handpicked their favorites to generate a few chuckles with just the right amount of gaud. Prices range from $24.99 to $34.99.

  1. Go for a clever saying. Red and green, and reindeer and snowmen continue to dominate the visuals in this category. The buyers do report an influx of clever sayings, many lifted from pop culture references, including Gingerbread House holiday sweater; Meow Christmas holiday hoodie, and Chillin with My Snowmies holiday sweater.
  2. Light it up. For those looking to go beyond jingle bells, some of the sweaters offered this season either light up or include an accessory that does so, such as a hat or a necklace. If you are looking to light up your look, try these suggestions:  Reindeer Holiday sweater with matching light up necklace; Unicorn holiday sweater with matching unicorn headband; and Fleece Navidad sweater with light up santa hat.
  3. Celebrate your love – or not so lovable feelings – for the season. If the phrase, “I’m only a morning person on December 25th” or the classic, “Don’t get your tinsel in a tangle” sounds appealing to you, there is a whole assortment of apparel that helps you amplify your love – or annoyance – of all things holiday. Whatever camp you may fall into, here are some buyer suggestions: “Dear Santa, It’s a long story” Holiday tunic with coordinating scarf; “I’m not a morning person except on December 25” Holiday long-sleeved hoodie; or “Don’t get your tinsel in a tangle” Holiday tunic with coordinating scarf.

And if a sweater isn’t enough, there are dresses, skirts with garland, comfy holiday pajama bottoms or holiday onesies that can round out whatever look you are going for – from kitschy to comfortable. For those with a full holiday party schedule, consider taking advantage of the newest trend of holiday pajamas. Not just reserved for family holiday cards, according to the buyers, it’s the ultimate day to nighttime look this season.

Meijer reveals 2017 Thanksgiving Day picks for wine and beer from vineyards and breweries across the Midwest

Meijer reveals 2017 Thanksgiving Day picks for wine and beer from vineyards and breweries across the Midwest

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., 2017-Nov-22 — /EPR Retail News/ — Historically, Meijer sells nearly 10 million bottles of wine and beer during Thanksgiving week, according to the Meijer beer and wine buyers. If you are looking for guidance and open to adding a local selection, the buyers have released their 2017 Thanksgiving Day picks that herald from vineyards and breweries across the Midwest.

2017 Local Wine Recommendations

According to wines.com, Thanksgiving is the one day of the year when wine is most likely to appear on American dinner tables. Turkey is one of the most versatile meats that can be paired with many types of wine. White wines and delicate reds complement white meat, while a bold red pairs nicely with dark meat. The pairing process gets complicated when you consider side dishes and desserts. Here are our wine buyers top local vintage picks by state that range from dry to sweet:

  • Michigan: From Chateau Grand Traverse, they prefer Mich Mash White Blend; Mich Mash Red Blend; and Mich Mash Riesling.
  • Wisconsin: From Door Peninsula Winery, they recommend Door County Blackberry Merlot; from WollerSheimWinery, its Prairie Fume; and from Cedar Creek Winery, its Cranberry Blush.
  • Illinois: From Illinois Cellars, they recommend Velvet Red; from Lynfred Winery, the top pick is Lynfred Cranberry; and from St. James Winery, its St. James Blackberry.
  • Indiana: From Oliver Winery & Vineyards, they prefer Oliver Riesling; from Mallow Run Winery its Rhubarb; from Easley Winery, the top choice is Jubilee Cranberry and from Huber Winery its Sweet Marcella.
  • Ohio: From Mon Ami Winery, they recommend Pink Catawba, Catawba White, and Concord; from The Winery at Versailles, its Rodeo Red; and from Vinoklet Winery its La Dolce Vita.
  • Kentucky: From Stonebrook Winery, they recommend Blackberry; and from Old 502 Winery, the top choice is Kentucky Lady.

2017 Local Beer Recommendations

For those looking to buck tradition, consider featuring some local brews at your Thanksgiving celebration. According to the Meijer beer buyers, the effervescence in beer cleanses the palate, which based on all of the textures and flavors offered in a Thanksgiving meal, drinking beer allows you to fully experience the flavors of each dish. During dinner, consider sticking with a pale ale or a session IPA.

  • Pale Ales: New Glarus Moon Man from Wisconsin; Lagunitas Little Sumpin Sumpin from Illinois/California; and Rhinegeist Crash from Ohio.
  • Session IPAs: Founders All Day IPA and Perrin No Problems, both from Michigan.

When it comes to dessert, the Meijer beer buyers suggest adding something a little more complex depending on the dessert, or try a cider, especially when enjoying apple pie.

  • Pumpkin Pie: Atwater Vanilla Java Porter; Bell’s Christmas Ale; and Vander Mill Totally Roasted, all of which are Michigan brews, and Great Lakes Christmas ale from Ohio.
  • Chocolate Cake: Founders Backwoods Bastard; New Holland Dragon’s Milk or The Poet; and Rochester Mills Milkshake Stout, all of which are Michigan brews. Kentucky Ale’s Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Stout, from Kentucky and Sun King Wee Mac from Indiana.
  • Apple Pie: Blake’s Wake Fire Cider from Michigan; and Redd’s Blueberry Ale from Wisconsin.

Meijer: day before Thanksgiving is the top sales day for pies for the entire year

Meijer: day before Thanksgiving is the top sales day for pies for the entire year

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., 2017-Nov-21 — /EPR Retail News/ — In less than a week, American’s love of celebration and feasting kicks into high gear with Thanksgiving. The Meijer Bakery team reports that traditionally, the retailer moves more than a quarter-million Meijer brand pies in the days before Thanksgiving. In fact, the day before Thanksgiving at Meijer is the top sales day for pies for the entire year.

However, if you live with diabetes or are trying to limit your sugar intake, this time of the year can be challenging to navigate through what seems like an endless parade of sweet tables and cookie exchanges. Here are some tips to remember on Thanksgiving, and throughout the season, so you can enjoy your slice of the pie.

  • Stick to the Classics: Pumpkin, apple and sweet potato pies are still top sellers, with pumpkin leading the pack. Sweet potato pie does outpace pumpkin sales in Indianapolis and the Metro Detroit area. If you are concerned about calories, pumpkin, apple and sweet potato are listed within the Top 10 as being healthier, ranging from 300-380 calories per slice, according to Eat This, Not That’s Top 25 Pies. Additionally, all three pies contain cinnamon, which has been noted to help control blood sugar. When it comes to mass-produced pumpkin pies, pay attention to the ingredients. Meijer Bakery buyers report that not all pies are created equal due to a sharp decline in sugar pumpkin production. Some pumpkin pies now contain a pumpkin squash mix, which can alter the flavor and the sugar content. Look for specific sugar pumpkin varieties on the label, including Baby Pam, Autumn Gold, Ghost Rider, New England Pie Pumpkin, Lumina (which are white), Cinderella and Fairy Tale.
  • Try a No-Sugar-Added Pie: Meijer continues to expand its selection of no-sugar-added treats and sources many from Illinois-based Hill & Valley Bakeries, which the retailer began working with in 2003. The top three sellers include: No Sugar Added (NSA) Pumpkin Pie, NSA Apple Pie and NSA Cherry Pie. Many no-sugar-added treats contain a combination of different kinds of sugar replacers, including sugar alcohols. Sugar alcohols are neither a sugar nor an alcohol. It is a hybrid between a sugar molecule and an alcohol molecule, and are considered a type of sweet carbohydrate that is a derivative of sugar. It is considered an excellent option in helping to control blood sugar levels. Unlike artificial and low-calorie sweeteners, sugar alcohols do contain calories, just fewer than plain sugar.
  • Take Advantage of Portion Sizes: Meijer now carries pie portions in various sizes, ranging from a 4-oz. slice to an 11-inch pie. The Meijer Bakery team found that many customers, particularly those with blood sugar issues, prefer traditionally-prepared pies, but opt to take a smaller portion because it allows them to indulge without going overboard. One option is to purchase different pies at smaller portions so guests can sample small bites.
  • Remember – It’s All About the “Slurry”: When it comes to pie, it’s all about filling – also known as the “slurry.” To reduce your calorie intake, forgo the sides that go along with the pie, which include the crust, the whipped topping and the ice cream. This small sacrifice is worth the price of enjoying the gooey-goodness that makes a pie memorable.

If you are looking to try new recipes this Thanksgiving or opting for some diabetes-friendly alternatives, go to More for A Healthier You and search “Thanksgiving.”

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., 2017-Nov-07 — /EPR Retail News/ — Meijer recently released its new Thanksgiving TV commercial that celebrates the time-honored tradition of traveling home for the Thanksgiving holiday.

The commercial began airing Nov. 4 in select cities and will expand to all markets within the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based retailer’s six-state footprint of Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Kentucky and Wisconsin leading up until Thanksgiving Day. The 60-second spot features three scenarios of families and friends traveling home for Thanksgiving, including one actor who is an actual veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps who grew up shopping at Meijer.

“For many people who grew up in the Midwest, Meijer means home.  We’ve heard many customers say that passing a Meijer truck or a Meijer store means they are close to family,” said Nicole Laughlin, Vice President of Brand Development and Marketing for Meijer. “Of all the holidays, travel is most associated with Thanksgiving. We were able to marry two concepts we know a lot about – family and food – into one TV commercial that beautifully captures the anticipation of going home and the delight around sharing Thanksgiving with family.”

The Meijer Thanksgiving TV spot developed by Chicago-based advertising agency, The Distillery Project. The commercial’s media buy includes airing the spot as a pre-roll video on relevant video featured on Teads.tv and YouTube. Meijer will also utilize SambaTV to expand its views across devices, such as Roku, AmazonFire TV and Tivo.

The Distillery Project also produced the 2016 award-winning Meijer Holiday TV commercial. Meijer plans to re-broadcast the award-winning spot after Thanksgiving.

Meijer expands home delivery service to include season’s hottest gifts and toys and thousands of other items

Meijer expands home delivery service to include season’s hottest gifts and toys and thousands of other items

Retailer’s home delivery service expands to include toys, wrapping paper, Christmas decorations and thousands of other items

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., 2017-Nov-07 — /EPR Retail News/ — Meijer is gearing up for the holidays by adding thousands of general merchandise items to its popular store-to-door home delivery service, challenging online retailers as competition for customer wallets continues to increase for Thanksgiving, Christmas and seasonal celebrations.

The general merchandise items now available through Meijer Home Delivery includes the season’s hottest gifts and toys, as well as wrapping paper, artificial trees and Christmas decorations. Other items added to a total of more than 70,000 fresh produce, grocery and general merchandise items hand-picked by Shipt shoppers from local Meijer stores include electronics like TVs, tablets, headphones, drones and gaming systems.

“We’ve had tremendous success delivering groceries to our customers across the Midwest, so we are very pleased to offer them the convenience of having their holiday gifts delivered to their doorstep as well,” Meijer President & CEO Rick Keyes said. “Whether you are looking for a turkey, toys and gifts or even decorations, our brick–and-mortar stores combined with a personal shopping solution provides something for everyone’s holiday shopping needs.”

Since launching in Detroit last September, Meijer and official home delivery partner Shipt have expanded the personalized service to more than 200 stores in just 148 days. The Meijer Home Delivery service is now on-pace to make more than a million deliveries from its stores by year end, and is now available to more than 10 million households in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin and Kentucky.

Keyes said one reason the program has been so successful is the company’s ability to offer product selection from its supercenters. A typical Meijer store features everything from fresh produce and grocery to general merchandise items, including light bulbs, diapers and baby items, as well as bulk items, like bags of rock salt and pet foods.

The National Retail Federation expects retail sales in November and December – excluding automobiles, gasoline and restaurants – to increase as much as 4 percent this year, for a total of $678.75 billion to $682 billion, up from $655.8 billion last year.

Because most Meijer stores are open 24-hours-a-day, customers can choose delivery times most convenient for them, which gives people the flexibility to shop and receive orders very early in the morning or late at night.

Meijer has also provided home delivery service members the ability to earn mPerks Rewards that can be redeemed in store, as well as offering sales on hundreds of items each week found through the Shipt app.

Meijer customers can sign up for the service for $99 per year. Unlimited deliveries are free for orders over $35; a flat $7 delivery fee is added to any orders under $35.

Meijer earns 2017 SmartWay® Excellence Award for its outstanding environmental performance and leadership

Meijer earns 2017 SmartWay® Excellence Award for its outstanding environmental performance and leadership

First year retailer recognized as a SmartWay shipping partner

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., 2017-Oct-30 — /EPR Retail News/ — Meijer is pleased to announce that it earned a 2017 SmartWay® Excellence Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for its outstanding environmental performance and leadership.

The award recognizes the top-performing SmartWay retail and manufacturing shipping partners that demonstrate how businesses can mitigate their carbon footprints and contribute to cleaner, healthier air, while saving on fuel costs as they move goods across the country.

“Meijer is proud to receive the prestigious recognition by SmartWay. Our distribution and logistics teams continue to make significant progress to lower emissions and reduce our carbon footprint in the markets we serve,” said Tom McCall, Vice President of Logistics for Meijer. “We constantly focus on improving the efficiency of our fleet to reduce idle time, emissions, and impact on our neighbors, particularly in urban settings.”

Meijer operates a fleet of 250 semi-trucks that, collectively, cover an estimated 25 million miles each year. Meijer is constantly working to minimize the emissions from refrigerated trailers. All refrigerated units are programmed with “cycle sentry.” Cycle-Sentry automatically regulates the engine as refrigeration is needed. This technology enables Meijer to see a fuel savings of nearly 80 percent, increases the life of the engine, and reduces maintenance costs.

Meijer also uses three, Tier 4 CARB hybrid/electric shore powered refrigerated units at its Distribution and Stock dock doors to run only on electronic. This reduces operating and maintenance expenses, eliminates local diesel emissions, and meets local noise ordinances. These hybrid units are now the standard specification for new unit purchases.

In addition, Meijer has built a best-in-class clean diesel fleet, made focused investments in energy efficiency within its retail footprint, and established an ongoing commitment to sustainable design in new construction and renovation.

The annual SmartWay Excellence Award honors top shipping and logistics companies for superior environmental performance and additional actions to reduce freight emissions through effective collaboration, operational practices, a robust system for validating and reporting their SmartWay data, and communications and public outreach. SmartWay Excellence Awardees lead their industries in improving freight efficiency and contributing to cleaner air within their supply chains. The awardees are chosen from more than 3,500 companies and organizations participating in SmartWay.

Meijer surpassed 500,000 deliveries from its store-to-door service and is on-pace to see more than a million by year-end

Meijer surpassed 500,000 deliveries from its store-to-door service and is on-pace to see more than a million by year-end

Retailer’s store-to-door success includes 1 million eggs, 1.5 million pounds of bananas, and availability to more than 10 million households across the Midwest

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., 2017-Oct-26 — /EPR Retail News/ — Meijer is proving just how popular store-to-door convenience for grocery delivery has become in the Midwest. The Grand Rapids, Mich.-based retailer recently surpassed 500,000 deliveries, and is on-pace to see more than a million deliveries made from its stores by year-end.

Since launching in Detroit last September, Meijer has expanded the personalized service to more than 200 stores in just 148 days. The store-to-door service is now available to more than 10 million households in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Kentucky where Shipt shoppers hand-pick items from local Meijer stores offering home delivery. So far, more than 85,000 cases of water, 1 million eggs and 1.5 million pounds of bananas have been brought right to your door.

“As e-commerce continues to change the way people shop, we are proud to bring home delivery to the Midwest and innovate the way people shop our stores,” Meijer President & CEO Rick Keyes said. “Our goal was to quickly bring a high level of convenience to as many customers as possible, so surpassing a half million deliveries is a great start as we continue enhancing this personalized customer-first experience.”

Keyes said that one reason why the service has been so popular is the retailer’s ability to combine a seamless digital shopping solution with the best of what its brick and mortar retail model stores offer. Meijer supercenters across six states average more than 192,000 square-feet, featuring everything from fresh produce and grocery to general merchandise that includes daily essential items like light bulbs, diapers, school supplies, as well as bulk items, like bags of rock salt and pet foods, normally found at specialty stores.

Because most Meijer stores are open 24-hours-a-day, customers can choose delivery times most convenient for them, which allows those with third shift jobs or challenging lifestyles the flexibility to shop and receive orders very early in the morning or late at night.

Meijer has also provided home delivery service members the ability to earn mPerks Rewards that can be redeemed in store, as well as offering sales on hundreds of items each week found through the Shipt app.

“Having the unrivaled selection of fresh produce, grocery and general merchandise available under one roof, not to mention the ability to earn rewards for your orders, has proven to be a differentiator for Meijer customers,” said Bill Smith, Founder and CEO for Shipt, which fulfills the deliveries for Meijer customers.

Meijer customers can sign up for the service for $99 per year. Unlimited deliveries are free for orders over $35; a flat $7 delivery fee is added to any orders under $35.

A half million deliveries and 1.5 million pounds of bananas later, Meijer’s combination of the traditional brick-and-mortar accessibility with a personalized digital shopping solution continues to attract everyone, including millennials, parents and those who may have difficulty shopping.

“Thirty minutes in a grocery store for me is like running a marathon for three or four hours,” said Idelma Urolia, who suffered a stroke in 2014 and signed up for Meijer home delivery as soon as it was offered in Detroit. “To have a service that is going to do all the manual labor of driving to Meijer, pick up my groceries, deliver right to my door, and even help put them away is more than life-changing, it’s a life-saver.”

Meijer rolls out Misfits program to help shoppers save money and reduce food waste

Meijer rolls out Misfits program to help shoppers save money and reduce food waste

Misfits program now available at all Meijer stores provides new option to save money and reduce food waste

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., 2017-Sep-27 — /EPR Retail News/ — Meijer has found a perfectly-imperfect fit for customers interested in reducing food waste and sacrificing aesthetics for savings.

Meijer now offers a unique line of Misfits® produce that helps connect shoppers to tasty but cosmetically-challenged fruits and vegetables at a reduced price. Delivered daily to 235 Meijer stores across the Midwest, the packaged fresh produce may be discolored, scarred or odd-sized, but offers the same taste, freshness and quality of other produce the retailer carries.

The Misfits program rolled out at all Meijer locations earlier this month, and customers have already purchased nearly a quarter of a million pounds of fresh, perfectly-imperfect produce. The Misfits program is made available through working with Robinson Fresh®. As a division of C.H. Robinson, the company is one of the world’s leading providers of produce, working with farms to repurpose fruits and vegetables that might not make it to your grocery store due to their appearance or shape.

“Meijer offers more than 600 types of produce, so the Misfits program has been an incredible extension to our overall selection,” said Peter Vail, Vice President of Produce, Deli and Bakery for Meijer. “There is an inner beauty of this perfectly-imperfect produce. Our customers have responded well to the produce made available through the Misfits program.”

Launching this program chain-wide complements Meijer’s sustainability goals, which supports the USDA’s goal of reducing food waste by 50 percent by the year 2030. Meijer also runs a Midwestern food rescue program that provides more than 10 million pounds of food—or more than 8 million meals—annually to local food banks in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin and Kentucky.

Currently, the United Nations estimates between 20 percent and 40 percent of produce harvested each year is thrown away because it does not meet accepted standards for store shelves. Nearly half of the available food supply in the U.S. is never eaten, according to the National Institutes of Health, wasting an estimated 35 tons of food per year. When food waste cannot be donated to feed hungry people, Meijer strives to recycle it through composting, anaerobic digestion or animal feed. Last year, Meijer recycled over 47.8 million pounds of food waste.

“We understand there is produce left in the field because farmers don’t think there is a market for it,” says Craig Arneson, Robinson Fresh general manager of the north region. “With the Misfits program, farmers have an outlet to sell more produce and customers have an opportunity to save money and help reduce waste.”

Local growers like River Ridge Farms from Sparta, Mich., have been part of Meijer’s Locally Grown program for 27 years and is one of the farms finding this new way to bring freshness to stores.

“Growers work hard to try and grow apples with the perfect shape, color and size, but since apples are grown outside, they may end up with an odd shape because it grew around a branch or has low color due to growing in a shady spot on the tree,” said Don Armock, president of Riveridge Produce. “Teaming with Meijer on the Misfits program, growers have an opportunity to sell imperfect, but great tasting fruit while the consumer gets to save on fresh produce while maybe even getting a laugh out of its odd look.”

Misfits produce items vary week to week based on their availability and are sold at a discount of between 20 to 40 percent; some of the seasonably-available produce has included apples, bell peppers, lemons, limes and sweet potatoes. Customers should look for prominently displayed Misfits bins and signage in the produce section of their local Meijer store.

Meijer kicks off fall Simply Give campaign

Meijer kicks off fall Simply Give campaign

Program generated nearly $32 million since 2008 for food pantries across the Midwest

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich, 2017-Aug-21 — /EPR Retail News/ — On the heels of its record-setting spring efforts, the Meijer fall Simply Give campaign will kick off Sunday to help stock the shelves of its food pantry partners throughout the Midwest.

“Participation in our Simply Give program continues to grow, thanks to the generosity of our customers and dedicated food pantry partners,” said Cathy Cooper, Senior Director of Community Partnerships and Giving. “We are committed to helping end the problem of food insecurity in the Midwest.”

The fall campaign will run through Sept. 16, helping restock the shelves of food pantries that were heavily utilized during the summer months.

In addition, on Sept. 1-2, Meijer will double match customers’ donations up to $25,000 per pantry. That means for every $10 donation card purchased, Meijer will contribute $20, resulting in a total $30 donation.

How it works:

During each Simply Give campaign, customers are encouraged to purchase a $10 Simply Give donation card upon checkout. Once purchased, the donation is converted into a Meijer Food-Only Gift Card and donated directly to the local food pantry selected by the store for that campaign.

Simply Give donation cards can be purchased at all 235 Meijer stores and will benefit a local food pantry.

Since Meijer began its Simply Give program in 2008, nearly $32 million – or 352 million meals – has been donated to help neighborhood food pantries keep their shelves stocked throughout the year. According to Feeding America, $1 equals 11 meals.

The program runs three times a year when food pantries need it the most: spring, fall and holiday.

“Hunger is a problem that occurs in all of our communities, which is why the funds generated from Simply Give stay local,” Cooper said. “The Simply Give program gives everyone a chance to work toward ensuring no one has to go without food.”

A video featuring a food pantry volunteer is available on the Meijer Newsroom at http://newsroom.meijer.com/broll-footage.

Meijer hosts in-store parties for incoming college students across the Midwest

Meijer hosts in-store parties for incoming college students across the Midwest

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., 2017-Aug-14 — /EPR Retail News/ — Midwest retailer Meijer is getting ready to welcome more than 42,000 incoming college freshmen as they head to campus this fall during widely-popular shopping parties dubbed “Meijer Mania.”

The annual Back-to-College events celebrate incoming students in style during a night of fun—complete with a DJ, photo booth and interactive contests—while helping them collect their last-minute dorm and classroom essentials. The retailer kicks off the Meijer Mania events next week and will host a total 20 events at 18 colleges across the Midwest through early September.

“Our Meijer Mania events provide students the opportunity to shop for their first living spaces away from home and share a fun-filled bonding experience with classmates,” said Cathy Cooper, Senior Director of Promotions and Sponsorships at Meijer. “We are pleased to partner with so many colleges and universities to help ease the transition of moving into a new living environment for these students.”

Meijer began throwing in-store parties for incoming college freshmen more than 15 years ago to give students a chance to get to know their peers in a fun atmosphere, and introduce the Meijer brand to those who may not have grown up shopping at the Midwest supercenter—some of whom may learn how to pronounce the retailer’s name for the first time, Cooper said.

In total, more than 42,000 students—about 2,000 freshmen per event—will bus from campus to their local Meijer store for a night of festivities. Typically, a DJ will get the crowd pumped up while students participate in interactive games and contests, snap pictures in the photo booth, and stock their carts with snacks and school supplies. Meijer also provides samples and coupons, and occasionally hosts big-ticket giveaways.

One of retail’s leading shopping seasons, back-to-school and college is a $75 billion industry, according to the National Retail Federation. Meijer Mania events help spread out the spending during a time when college students and their families are busy preparing for the school year.

Meijer pharmacies to host Back to School Immunization Events on Saturday, Aug. 12

Meijer pharmacies to host Back to School Immunization Events on Saturday, Aug. 12

Retailer offering vaccines this weekend to help kids and adults guard against flu season before it starts

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., 2017-Aug-12 — /EPR Retail News/ — Meijer pharmacies across the Midwest are holding Back to School Immunization Events this weekend to help families guard against the flu before classes start. Pharmacists in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin and Kentucky will offer vaccinations and information about other avoidable conditions that commonly affect school children at all 235 Meijer stores on Saturday, Aug. 12, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Meijer Vice President of Pharmacy Operations Karen Mankowski says the goal of the events is to remind parents that back to school is the perfect time to give their kids a flu shot and minimize the spread of seasonal influenza. While every flu season is different, it’s the best way to keep families healthy at a time when viruses are most prevalent.

“Most people believe the best time to get a flu shot is when the weather gets colder,” says Mankowski. “But getting a flu shot before or soon after school starts can make a big difference. Once classes start, that’s when viruses become, well, viral, and it becomes difficult to keep influenza from spreading.”

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, it can take approximately two weeks before flu vaccinations begin protecting from the seasonal virus. Flu outbreaks can begin as early as October.

Meijer operates 235 pharmacies in its supercenters throughout the Midwest, all of which administer the vaccine without an appointment during pharmacy hours and accept most major insurance plans. Most insurance covers the flu shot at the pharmacy without co-pay.  Depending on age, health status and state regulations, Meijer offers a variety of vaccine options including:

  • Trivalent vaccine: Vaccines injected in the arm for $29.99. Note that limited quantities are available as manufacturers are phasing out this three-strain version of the vaccine.
  • Quadrivalent vaccine: A vaccine that covers four strains and is recommended for 4 years of age and up.
  • HD vaccine: This is the high dose version indicated for 65 years of age and older that is typically covered by Medicare Part B.

Getting a flu shot, as well as other immunizations offered at Meijer, may also count as prescription credits in the mPerks Pharmacy Rewards Program, which allows customers to earn savings on shopping and gas purchases. See program details for restrictions.

“There is no expiration date in receiving a flu shot, so the sooner you get your flu shot, the better chance you have of staying healthy this flu season,” reminds Mankowski.

Meijer adds back-to-school items to its home delivery service

Meijer adds back-to-school items to its home delivery service

Retailer adds classroom essentials to home delivery service and drops prices on 300 popular back-to-school items

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., 2017-Jul-31 — /EPR Retail News/ — Meijer is making it easier for parents to plan ahead for the coming school year. The Grand Rapids, Mich.-based retailer is adding key back-to-school items to its popular home delivery service and cutting prices in-store on more than 300 of its most popular items.

Beginning today, customers with home delivery memberships can shop online for the most frequently-shopped back–to-school items and have everything delivered store-to-door by Shipt shoppers as soon as one hour after the order is placed, or up to one day in advance. For customers wanting to shop in-store, the selection for back to school features price drops on the hottest items and has nearly 200 items priced $1 or less.

“Each year, we see parents and students shopping earlier and earlier, and they continue right up until the week school starts,” said Meijer Back-to-School Buyer Michael McKenzie. “Everyone is looking for the best combination of selection, convenience and low prices, so we hope providing this new way to shop and save time is going to help customers be better prepared for back to school and maximize their fun this summer.”

The Meijer home delivery service combines personalized shopping with fresh grocery and a wide selection of daily essentials available 24 hours a day. It is now available throughout Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Kentucky. Since launching the service in Detroit last September, Meijer has expanded the service to more than 160 stores and Shipt shoppers have made more than 250,000 deliveries.

McKenzie said Meijer stores have seen back-to-school business double week over week in late July, and he expects sales will continue to increase through September as families make their weekly grocery trips. Some of the hottest items so far include washable crayons and markers – as parents seek ways to keep clothes and homes clean – and pourable glue and food coloring, which are main ingredients for the incredibly popular slime-making trend.

Other hot items include:

  • Journals and calligraphy back in style: Journals are quickly becoming more popular than binders as students continue to mix durability with style. Following the coloring book craze from the past few years, calligraphy is now gaining popularity as another way to promote art and mindfulness exercises for kids and young adults.
  • Eye-catching accessories and supplies: Licensed products like backpacks, lunch kits and assorted school supplies are ever-popular, with top choices including Minecraft, Emoji, Princess Elena, Paw Patrol, Super Mario, Power Rangers, Despicable Me and Pokémon. For older students, Under Armour, Adidas and Swiss Gear, as well as Rachel Hale and bohemian-style are just some of the 90 different backpacks available at Meijer this year.
  • Stylish and comfortable apparel: Ribbed swing dresses, suede tops and leggings, quirky print mixing, and destructed denim are all hot trends in young girls’ clothing this season. Athleisure styling with velvet and satin details are big for juniors. One-quarter zip action tops, hooded fleece jackets, and jeans and joggers that mix texture and stretch are popular for both boys’ and kids’ outfits.
  • Lunches packing personality and taste: Bento boxes and reusable containers continue to grow in popularity, and kids are personalizing them even more. They are also much more interested in exploring exotic flavors – even trying child-friendly versions of sushi made with fruit, sometimes referred to as “frushi.” Parents are also using more whole grain wraps, pasta and crackers in kids’ lunch boxes.

Meijer spring Simply Give campaign raised more than $3 million; the most successful campaign in its 9-year history

Spring campaign generated more than $3 million for Midwest food pantries

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., 2017-Jul-17 — /EPR Retail News/ — The Meijer spring Simply Give campaign set a record with more than $3 million – or 33 million meals – to stock the shelves of food pantries across the Midwest, making it the most successful campaign in the program’s 9-year history.

The spring success came on the heels of a record $1 million donation to the program during the Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give, and a record-setting year in 2016, said Cathy Cooper, Senior Director of Community Partnerships and Giving.

“The Simply Give program is making a difference in the communities we serve, and we are so thankful our customers continue to stand with us and support this incredibly worthwhile effort,” Cooper said. “It’s inspiring to see friends and neighbors coming together to help feed our hungry neighbors.”

The Grand Rapids, Mich.-based retailer began its Simply Give program in 2008 as a way to help local food pantries throughout the Midwest achieve their mission of feeding hungry families. Since then, nearly $32 million – or 352 million meals – has been generated for food pantries.

The program runs three times a year when food pantries need it the most: spring, fall and holiday.

During each Simply Give campaign, customers are encouraged to purchase a $10 Simply Give donation card upon checkout. Once purchased, the donation is converted into a Meijer Food-Only Gift Card and donated directly to the local food pantry selected by the store for that campaign.

Meijer store-to-door service now include beer, wine and spirits in Michigan

Meijer store-to-door service now include beer, wine and spirits in Michigan

Personalized shopping service now offers Michigan customers beer, wine and spirits as part of store-to-door delivery

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich, 2017-Jul-11 — /EPR Retail News/ — Meijer and official home delivery partner Shipt announced that customers in Michigan can now have beer, wine and spirits delivered from local stores as part of its popular store-to-door service.

Beginning tomorrow, July 11, Shipt members will be able to add items from the retailer’s large assortment of craft beers, wines and spirits as part of more than 55,000 grocery and daily essential items available at local Meijer stores. Meijer launched the membership-based, home delivery service in the Detroit area last year and has continued to expand the service throughout Michigan, including Grand Rapids, Ann Arbor, Traverse City and West Lakeshore communities.

“We’ve received an incredible amount of feedback from customers wanting to take advantage of our large selection of craft beers and wine,” said Art Sebastian, Vice President of Digital Shopping for Meijer. “We think this enhances the level of convenience our home delivery customers in Michigan can enjoy and allows them to take more advantage of what our stores have to offer.”

Customers who order groceries as part of the membership-based service are required to provide valid identification to place an order that includes alcohol. Shipt Shoppers must be at least 21 years of age and certified to deliver alcohol. Shoppers must also verify the member receiving the order is 21 or older and has proper identification demonstrating legal drinking age when the order is delivered. Michigan is currently the only state where alcohol is included as part of Meijer’s home delivery service.

Customers can sign up for the membership-based service and can shop online for groceries and everyday essentials and perishables -including fresh produce, frozen items, baby care products and pet food. Personal shoppers hand-pick items from local Meijer stores offering Shipt’s home-delivery service and deliver orders within a preferred one-hour time window.

To sign up for home delivery, Meijer customers can sign up for annual or monthly Shipt memberships. Annual memberships are $99 per year and monthly memberships are $14 per month. For a limited-time new members will also receive $25 off their first order. Delivery is free for orders over $35; a flat $7 delivery fee is added to any orders under $35.
