Debenhams Announces the Return of the Short Suit

Debenhams has revealed that ‘Just William’ style blazers worn with matching shorts are up 500 per cent on last year, thanks to grown men sporting the look on high streets and in offices across the country.

The surprise style hit of the summer, tailored short suits have been deemed smart enough for work yet cool enough for public transport, leading to a sales boom throughout the warm weather.

Spotted on the SS11 catwalks of Louis Vuitton, Jean Paul Gaultier and Dries Van Noten, this is one trend that has definitely made the leap to the great British high street.

The short suit is now available in all manner of fabrics and colours from powder blue linen through to black pinstripe cotton.

In fact, the most popular short suit has proved to be light blue, 100% linen Jeff Banks knee-length shorts and matching jackets which have been the store’s top selling menswear product for two weeks running already.

Men are typically wearing short suits with deck shoes – perfect for the tricky smart casual dress code.

Debenhams spokesperson, Ruth Attridge said: “We have heard about the emergence of ‘mankles’ – male ankles peeking out from rolled up trousers. Well, this takes it to the next level.

“All over the world, British men are renowned for exposing their white knobbly knees during the summer holidays. We want this great tradition to continue whether you are jetsetting, staycationing or off to work.”

The look was debuted by AC/DC lead guitarist Angus Young in the seventies and eighties but it wasn’t until recent shots of celebrities including tennis player Roger Federer, designer Henry Holland and The Only Way is Essex’s Mark Wright appeared that the fashion really took off.

Attridge continued: “For the daring few, wearing a short suit can be liberating experience, particularly when faced with the tropic temperatures of a morning commute.

“A certain level of confidence is needed to carry off this style however, and avoid teaming it with a tie and cap. You don’t want to look like Wee Jimmy Krankie.”

Debenhams sells over 300 varieties of men’s shorts, ranging from £13 to £65 in sizes 28 to 44.

Burton Announces The Montague Burton Collection

Burton has been a staple on the British high street for well over 100 years, with a heritage steeped in history, with this in mind, the brand is proud to announce the launch of its new Montague Burton Collection which draws on its history, looks at its archives for inspiration; and ultimately creates a capsule wardrobe for autumn winter that is proud to be British.

The range (named after Montague Burton, the founding father of the company in 1904) builds on the resurgence of national pride as the UK approaches the 2012 Olympics. With a nation united there has never been a better time to turn the nation’s attention to all things British.

The Montague Burton Collection has been crafted within British mills using British fabrics and key pieces from the range that have been designed using original, archived pieces. Through advances in garment technology Burton has created a vintage looking collection with a modern feel.

The classic “Charlie” overcoat for example has actually been designed using Montague Burton’s own personal coat which has been passed down from generation to generation of the Burton family.

The two wool suits in the range (one in a brown and the other in a grey salt and pepper tweed) have been carefully created to produce a stylish, modern take on an original 1958 design; perfect for those men mad on emulating 1950’s tailoring. Each item in the range has been given a typically British name reminiscent of a by gone age, including a trapper hat and flat cap called William and Harry which wouldn’t look out of place for a walk in the grounds of Balmoral Castle.

Knitwear is paramount within this collection with British wool being used to create jumpers, cardigans and roll necks that are perfect for layering. Cable knits add chunky texture that is sure to keep out the British weather this autumn/winter.

The Montague Burton collection has created a capsule wardrobe for the new season that nods to all things British. Celebrating this country’s strengths the new range uses Burton’s heritage as the foundation to create statement, investment pieces on the high street.

The rest of the collection includes trend led outerwear, knitwear and accessories in an earthy colour palette of khaki, ecru, grey, brown, moss and slate that mixes textures such as tweed, wool and suede to full effect.

Design details such as elbow patches, rope ties toggles and football buttons create a classic English country gent aesthetic that is set to be a big look this season. Further more this collection looks equally good in an urban city setting as it does on a long country walk.

The Montague Burton Collection launches in October 2011 in selected stores and online on Burton’s website.

Topman Launches The Swimwear Project

Topman has launched The Swimwear Project, which is another in a series of projects whereby Topman invite selected designers to recreate a particular staple from a Man’s wardrobe. For this project, Bernhard Willhelm, Jonathan Saunders, Cassette Playa, Gary Card and Todd Selby have all been asked to design their perfect pair of swim shorts.

Gordon Richardson, design director for Topman, said: “The Swim Project is where Topman turns up the print volume. Designers well known for their visual stance have produced a diverse range of graphics and illustrations ranging from photo real images through to faded florals to hand drawn sketches in a collection that goes from poolside to beach in great style.”

Having graduated from the prestigious Royal Academy of Antwerp, German born Bernhard Willhelm is now a regular on the catwalks of Paris Fashion Week. His often avant-garde designs have always caught the eye and this is perfectly demonstrated in his swim design- a short speedo style trunk complete with trompe l’oeil zip and available in a royal blue and red colourway.

Scottish born Jonathan Saunders has now created a cult following both sides of the Atlantic for his technical one of a kind prints. His design is a ¾ lengthy short in turquoise blue with rose, pink and ecru floral prints.

London based designer Cassette Playa has grown a reputation as a designer of street and urbanwear following her collaborations with Nike, Swatch and M.IA. Having previously shown as part of the Topman sponsored MAN event, she was the perfect choice for this project. Her short is knee length with one leg block coloured in pink and the other leg featuring a photographic print of a shark.

Gary Card is a sought after set designer who has worked with the likes of Vogue, Lady Gaga and Stella McCartney in the past. His playful design features prints of his favourite toys and a purple waistband. Card will also be designing the window scheme for this project.

Topman Has Been Announced Amongst The Shortlist For E-Retailer Of The Year 2009

With the internet presenting the fastest growing route to market for retailers and brands, the competition to be the best is extremely strong. This makes being nominated on the shortlist for E-Retailer of the Year at the 2009 World Retail Awards, an immensely sought after accolade.

Topman’s Head of Ecommerce, Gracia Amico, said the nomination was testament to a lot of hard work in the last twelve months: “It’s been a great year for Topman, from launching our new website last year, opening our online store for US customers and achieving record sales over Christmas, this award nomination is great recognition to all the team.”

These awards recognise the retailer who can best show how they have succeeded in changing their business to perform on a multi-channel platform and who has managed to deliver increasing levels of profitable business transactions online.

The internet poses huge challenges to retailers who have previously only operated from physical stores or a catalogue, requiring them to adapt and embrace multiple new channels. This has lead to a revolution of the retail industry in terms of pricing, internationalisation, logistics, operations, marketing and branding.

For this year’s award, Topman is competing against some very strong nominations, which includes Tesco, the winner of the award in 2008, and two other British retailers – New Look and mydeco.com. Completing the shortlist are Italy’s Yoox Group and Zappos.com from the US.

The winner will be announced on 7th May, at a prestigious gala awards ceremony to be held during the World Retail Congress in Barcelona.

The shortlist for the awards were all reviewed by panels of specialist, expert judges who were chosen for their knowledge and understanding of the types of retail related to each award category. The shortlisted finalists will now go forward to the final judging process overseen by the Grand Jury who will meet in Barcelona immediately before the opening of the World Retail Congress.
