RIMOWA celebrates its upcoming 120th anniversary with the creation of new visual identity

RIMOWA celebrates its upcoming 120th anniversary with the creation of new visual identity

PARIS, 2018-Jan-22 — /EPR Retail News/ — In conjunction with celebrations around its upcoming 120th anniversary, RIMOWA has unveiled a new visual identity. Just as RIMOWA suitcases are uniquely resilient over time and combine the best of German engineering and craftmanship, the new logo embodies the DNA of the German Maison and its ability to meld heritage and innovation.

Tradition and innovation have figured at the heart of RIMOWA products since its founding in 1898. To celebrate the company’s upcoming 120th anniversary and project an image as distinctive and contemporary as its suitcases, RIMOWA has created a new visual identity. The result of collaboration between the German design studio Bureau Borsche and London-based design agency Commission Studio, the project was led by Alexandre Arnault, co-CEO of RIMOWA, and Hector Muelas, Chief Brand Officer of RIMOWA.

The ambition for the identity, which contains a newly developed RIMOWA logo, monogram, visual language, and packaging suite, was to create a brand experience worthy of RIMOWA’s product. For the logo, RIMOWA selected a typeface that is both versatile and reflects the functional luxury of its suitcases. The color palette uses black and white along with grey tones.

RIMOWA’s new visual identity is part of a broad strategy initiative by the Maison, presented in December 2017 at the inauguration of its first pop-up store on Beverly Hills’ iconic Rodeo Drive in Los Angeles. Featuring the new visual identity, the store concept offers RIMOWA luggage lines, along with exclusive travel essentials designed in collaboration with local and international artists and brands.

RIMOWA collaborates with Fendi to design an exceptional suitcase

Paris, 2017-Dec-01 — /EPR Retail News/ — To celebrate the 80th anniversary of its iconic aluminum suitcase, RIMOWA has unveiled an exclusive collaboration with Fendi. For the first time, the benchmark in premium luggage has combined its expertise with the savoir-faire of the Roman fashion house to create a unique carry-on case.

This year marks the 80th anniversary of RIMOWA’s emblematic line of aluminum luggage. To mark the event, RIMOWA has teamed with Fendi to design an exceptional suitcase with the Roman fashion house.

RIMOWA stands apart for its unyielding quest for excellence, constant innovation and impeccable craftsmanship. Now, for the first time, RIMOWA has combined its savoir-faire with the inimitable style of Fendi. “RIMOWA stands for design, durability and craftsmanship, and Fendi is the perfect partner with their distinctive DNA and bold creativity,” says Alexandre Arnault, co-CEO of RIMOWA.

The two Maisons have created an aluminum carry-on case with sophisticated Fendi styling details, including the emblematic Fendi double F logo in brushed aluminum that changes perspective in different lighting, as well as a web belt that runs across the case. Fendi’s artisanal savoir-faire is featured in Cuoio Romano leather handles and the black neoprene interior lining, also embossed with the double F logo. The case is a concentrate of RIMOWA innovations too, fitted with the silent Multiwheel® system for optimum maneuverability and the Flex-Divider system for the most efficient possible packing.

“We are thrilled to be the first Maison in the LVMH Group to work with RIMOWA, a world leader in premium luggage. This case expresses the distinctive DNA of both Maisons, resulting in a superb quality contemporary piece for both women and men,” said Pietro Beccari, President and CEO of Fendi.

RIMOWA launches campaign to mark the 80th anniversary of its design

RIMOWA launches campaign to mark the 80th anniversary of its design

Paris, 2017-Oct-13 — /EPR Retail News/ — In 1937 RIMOWA revolutionized the world of travel by using aluminum for the first time to craft lightweight luggage made of aluminum. Inspired by the early days of aviation, the emblematic RIMOWA aluminum luggage has become a true travel icon. To mark the 80th anniversary of its design, RIMOWA has released a campaign retracing the history of the case and the stories of well-known owners who never leave without it…

Chance and circumstance combined to give birth to the RIMOWA aluminum suitcase in the 1930s. After a fire at the RIMOWA factory, the only surviving material was a piece of metal, sparking the idea of designing a piece of luggage made of lightweight, robust aluminum. Since then, the brand has ceaslessly innovated to optimize a now iconic range that fetes its 80th anniversary in 2017.

Setting out to produce exceptionally durable luggage able to stand the test of time, RIMOWA revolutionized travel culture. The instantly-recognizable design was subsequently produced in a smaller model, becoming a must for travelers the world over. In 1976, waterproof cases were developed, protecting delicate equipment from water, humidity, heat and cold, making RIMOWA a favorite among filmmakers, photographers and all manner of adventurers.

With the unmistakable RIMOWA signature grooved design, this travel companion is synonymous with a never-ending quest for excellence, melding craftsmanship, high-tech, impeccable quality and timeless elegance. It takes some 205 components and over 90 work processes to make each case at the Cologne factory.

To celebrate the 80th anniversary of its aluminum suitcase RIMOWA has invited friends of the Maison to present their own personal aluminum luggage and share stories of their travels. Among them are designer Karl Lagerfeld, director David Fincher, journalist Carine Roitfeld, three-star chef Massimo Bottura and Virgil Abloh, creator of the Off-White brand.

The campaign also includes a film shot by Dan Tobin Smith that follows the production of a suitcase in the workshop at the company’s headquarters in Cologne, Germany.

RIMOWA arrives in Paris with its first flagship store

Paris, 2017-Feb-06 — /EPR Retail News/ — RIMOWA has opened its first flagship store in the heart of Paris. The five-level, 600-square-meter store will showcase the entire range of RIMOWA high-end luggage and will offer a full range of services.

RIMOWA, the first German Maison to join the LVMH Group, has inaugurated its first flagship store at 73 rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, opposite the Hotel Bristol. The store will feature the entire range of RIMOWA high-end luggage and its rich manufacturing savoir-faire.

Inspired by the golden age of commercial aviation and the fuselage of the Junkers F13 in Duralumin, Swiss designers Atelier oï created a space marked by the iconic aluminum grooves of RIMOWA suitcases. With 600 square meters on five levels, the store includes retail space, an exhibition space, customer service, a repair shop and a projection room featuring the film of the Junkers F13 project by RIMOWA.

Guided by a passion for innovation, the Maison has also devoted a special area to its new RIMOWA Electronic Tag, a digital check-in solution launched in 2016 in partnership with Lufthansa and Eva Air. The first system in the world that allows travelers to check suitcases using a smartphone and deposit them at automatic baggage-drop machines, the RIMOWA Electronic Tag saves considerable time at the check-in counter.

RIMOWA to become the first German Maison of the LVMH Group

RIMOWA to become the first German Maison of the LVMH Group

RIMOWA to become the first German Maison of the LVMH Group

PARIS, 2016-Oct-05 — /EPR Retail News/ — Dieter Morszeck, grandson of the founder of RIMOWA, has chosen to partner with the LVMH Group with a view to preserving the spirit of excellence and the long-term vision that have inspired his family and the company’s employees for over a century.

Under the terms of the agreement, Dieter Morszeck will sell a majority stake to the LVMH Group while continuing to hold equity in the business and maintaining his leadership functions.

RIMOWA will then become the first German Maison of the LVMH Group.

Upon completion of the transaction, Alexandre Arnault will be appointed co-CEO of RIMOWA.

Founded in Cologne in 1898, luggage and leather goods maker RIMOWA has become one of the quintessential houses for innovative, high-quality luggage over the course of the twentieth century. The business has built its reputation designing lightweight and easy to use luggage and RIMOWA suitcases today serve as the industry benchmark for German quality.

Since its creation by Paul Morszeck, innovation has been at the heart of RIMOWA’s strategy. In 1937, his son Richard launched the first aluminium suitcase available on the market. The aluminium structure comprising parallel grooves makes the luggage instantly recognisable and has played its part in building the reputation of RIMOWA among a sophisticated international clientele.  His son Dieter designed the first waterproof metal case in 1976, since which time RIMOWA suitcases have become the travelling companion of choice for the greatest filmmakers, photographers and journalists.

RIMOWA revolutionised the industry when it launched the first polycarbonate suitcase in 2000. A patented system of ball bearings ensures optimum stability. Since 2014, RIMOWA has also been developing its exclusive “Bossa Nova” range which combines lightweight polycarbonate with the elegance of leather. This suitcase is a tribute to the English artist and botanist Margaret Mee who devoted her life to painting and protecting plants from the Amazon. RIMOWA donates a portion of its sales to the Association Saúde e Alegria which supports social projects in the Amazon.

More recently, in partnership with Lufthansa, RIMOWA has launched the RIMOWA Electronic Tag. This innovative feature simplifies baggage check-in by matching, with the use of a smartphone, the boarding card with a Bluetooth electronic tag integrated only within RIMOWA suitcases.

For over 60 years, RIMOWA suitcases have been inspired by the remarkable story of commercial aviation and the fuselage of the first metallic plane, the Junkers F-13. Thanks to the financial support and pioneering spirit of RIMOWA, a seven year project made it possible to reconstruct this legendary aircraft. The inaugural flight took place on September 15, 2016, nearly a century after its first commercial use in 1919. This revival embodies the exceptional heritage of the House.

Dieter Morszeck said: “My grandfather founded RIMOWA more than a century ago and I joined the company 44 years ago. By entrusting this family venture to the LVMH Group, we are guaranteeing a promising future to all RIMOWA employees. Over the past two years I have had the opportunity to establish close ties with the Arnault family, and in particular with Alexandre. Alexandre and I have discussed at length the attractive development prospects available to us and the common values that we share. I am delighted that he is joining RIMOWA and I have full confidence in his ability to accelerate the development of the business by my side.”

Alexandre Arnault said: “RIMOWA is a superb business which I have followed as a loyal customer for many years. RIMOWA has revolutionised the luggage industry for over a century, its suitcases are renowned for their unique performance, quality and design. I am honored to join RIMOWA and to be working alongside Dieter.”

Bernard Arnault said:  “RIMOWA is a brand with a unique heritage. We share with Dieter Morszeck the same passion for innovation and a common desire to offer very high-quality products derived from a European tradition of craftsmanship. What’s more, it brings me great pleasure that RIMOWA will be the first German house to join the LVMH Group. Germany is recognised all over the world for the vitality of its family businesses and for the quality of their products. I am glad that LVMH will now have an opportunity to be part of this thanks to RIMOWA.”

While working on this transaction, Dieter Morszeck has also created the RIMOWA Dieter Morszeck Foundation to which a substantial part of the sale proceeds will be donated. The RIMOWA Dieter Morszeck Foundation aims to support projects in scientific research, public health, education and humanitarian aid both in Germany and internationally.

The transaction, subject to the approval of the competition authorities, relates to 80% of the shares for a value of 640 million euros and is due to complete in January 2017. RIMOWA revenue for 2016 are expected to exceed 400 million euros.
