Colruyt’s ‘Dinner is served at 1 -2-3 euros’ project reaches 100 towns and more than 2000 families

Halle, Belgium, 2018-Feb-28 — /EPR Retail News/ — Colruyt reaches more than 2000 families with social project ‘Dinner is served at 1 -2-3 euros’ 100 th town joins the project Halle, 20 February 2018 . All told, one hundred towns have agreed with Colruyt Lowest Prices to make a tasty and balanced diet more accessible to families in financial difficulties. One year and a half after the start of ‘Dinner is served at 1 -2-3 euros’ about two thousand familie s are already participating. Every two weeks, they receive a budget -friendly booklet with 6 easy recipes costing maximum 1, 2 or 3 euros per portion. A balanced diet is a basic right for everyone and Colruyt thus hopes to offer extra inspiration.

Budget -friendly recipes
The ‘Dinner is served at 1 -2-3 euros’ concept is simple. Vulnerable families with kids are informed by their Social Service or organisations such as Child&Family, the Centre for General Well -being, House of the child , etc. Families can enr ol and will then receive a Colruyt cookery booklet every two weeks. It contains six easy and child -friendly recipes and the shopping lists. Each recipe is enough for three large portions and costs no more than 1, 2 or 3 euros per portion. This includes the price of the whole packaging, even if less is needed to make the recipe. It allows people to know in advance exactly what they will pay at the check -out. The cookery booklet also contains tips to let kids help and to turn leftovers into a tasty dish.

To support participants, some social organisations organise cooking demonstrations to prepare recipes together. Or they ask the local Colruyt store to organise a guided tour, during which store employees can give tips on efficient and cheap shopping.

“No gourmet cook”
Today, the project has about two thousand participants, thus reach ing the same number of families. Colruyt notices that at least 37% of the participants already used the cookery booklet in a Colruyt store and 24% are frequent participants. Of course, some participants may shop at other store formats.

People are often happy with the inspiration for daily cooking, without having to rack their brains over the price. “I am not a gourmet cook, and I wanted to let you know that, thanks to you, I succeed in conjuring up satisfactory, varied, affordable and delicious dishes. I simp ly wanted to tell you that this is a really interesting initiative, so thanks!” , says a participant from Kortrijk.

Feedback from coaches does Colruyt good as well. Kurt De Loor, chairman of the Social Service of Zottegem: “Putting a balanced meal on the t able every day is not a picnic. Especially when it is not easy for people financially. We hear this a lot from families who visit our Social Service. That’s the reason why we decided to join Colruyt’s project. It is an easily accessible way to inspire people to conjure up cheap yet healthy meals. I am convinced this project will be a success in Zottegem as well.”

Roll-out in the whole country
‘Dinner is served at 1 -2-3 euros’ started two years ago as a test project of Colruyt, in cooperation with the Socia l Service of Kortrijk. A group of 144 families with kids living at home tested the concept for six months. The reactions were positive and Colruyt decided to roll out the project on a national level. In the past year, things have been moving really fast. R ecently, Zottegem was the hundredth town to join and applications keep coming.

“More and more often, social organisations tell us there is a need for simple tools to work on a balanced diet. Today, many West -Flemish towns are participating, but cities lik e Sint -Niklaas and Ghent also joined. And Wallonia also shows an interest: Namur an d Charleroi recently joined the project and there is much enthusiasm” , says Colruyt coordinator Wim Verbesselt.

Productive partnership
Cooperation between private, local a uthorities and social organisations starts from their expertise. “Social organisations know the vulnerable families and their need for measures to combat poverty” , says Wim Verbesselt. “At Colruyt we have a lot of expertise in cooking tasty and balanced fo od. If we join forces, we can make a structural and sustainable differen ce for people in difficulties. We are very happy to be able to take away some of the concerns of families with children and to help them manage. It is one of the many ways in which we fulfil our corporate social responsibility.”

Colruyt partners with the Belgian NGO to support cooperative of small coffee growers in North Kivu

Colruyt partners with the Belgian NGO to support cooperative of small coffee growers in North Kivu

Halle, 2017-Oct-17 — /EPR Retail News/ — A container of green coffee arrived today (13 October 2017) at Colruyt Group’s roasting centre in Ghislenghien. It comes from North Kivu, a region plagued by many difficulties, in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Colruyt Group has joined forces with the Belgian Vredeseilanden (Rikolto) NGO to support Kawa Kabuya, a cooperative of 2,200 small coffee growers. How? By guaranteeing a significant purchase volume for 3 years, 60% of which is paid for by pre-financing the harvest. Thanks to this financial lifeline, the cooperative can maintain its exports and invest in its activities. Colruyt Group and Vredeseilanden (Rikolto) prove once again that a long-term trade agreement is a real added-value for small Third World producers.

A long-term supply agreement
This delivery of green beans from Kivu is the first to be made under the terms of the new supply agreement signed in March 2017 between Colruyt Group and Kawa Kabuya. The agreement covers a period of at least three years. It guarantees the cooperative an outlet for 28.5 tonnes of green coffee beans per year, about 20% of its production, at a price higher than the market rate (+$0.50 per pound). Beyond the commercial agreement, Colruyt Group wants to support the cooperative in its development efforts. Made possible notably thanks to the pre-financing of the harvest.

Pre-financing the harvest
Philippe Toussaint, project manager sustainable purchases Colruyt Group explains, “Like many Third World cooperatives, Kawa Kabuya pays its small producers when they deliver their crops, in other words several months before the coffee is sold. As it doesn’t have liquid reserves, it has to use bridging loans to finance this operation. However, in this troubled region, credit is very expensive. We remove the financial obstacle to progress by settling 60% of the amount of our purchase before the harvest.”

Sector project
The origin of this agreement goes back to 2016 when Vredeseilanden (Rikolto) put Colruyt Group in touch with Kawa Kabuya. After a test at the end of 2016, Colruyt Group decided in March 2017 to integrate the cooperative’s Arabica into its range. Already on the shelves in Colruyt Best Prices and OKay, this coffee will also be available in Spar from January 2018. This involves giving this quality product the very best commercial opportunities around which Colruyt Group can develop one of its sector projects. The objective is to get the cooperative’s 2,200 small growers into a virtuous circle of economic strengthening.

The best coffee in the Congo
The financial boost provided by pre-financing the harvest aims to give the cooperative the means to invest. For example, by applying for certifications which will enable it to position its coffee better on the international market. It must be said that Kawa Kabuya has strong reasons for targeting this outlet: it produces the best coffee in the Congo. It won the African Fine Coffees Association’s Taste of Harvest competition in 2105, 2016 and 2017. Recognition of the efforts undertaken by the cooperative’s small growers who are working resolutely to revive quality coffee growing in the Kivu highlands.

Technical support
This revival has been supported by Vredeseilanden (Rikolto) since 2011. The NGO is conducting an extensive capacity-building programme in Kivu. Its objective is to add value to this region in order to develop the culture of more profitable coffee export,  and thus help to eradicate poverty in this region which has been plagued by many problems. It acts to support and train coffee growers with a view to high quality production, to organise them into cooperatives and connect them to international buyers.

Objective: quality
Kawa Kabuya was created within this context in 2014 in Butembo. Its coffee growers are scattered across the western heights of Lake Edward and gathered around 45 micro-washing stations (MWS). The MWS is at the heart of the of the system set up by Vredeseilanden (Rikolto). Each one ensures the initial treatment of the harvest. So these operations, essential to the quality of the beans, are carried out centrally in each sector by a well-trained workforce with the proper equipment. This guarantees optimum quality.

Collibri Foundation
Colruyt Group will not just stay there in Kivu. Wherever it is involved in a sector, it launches complementary training projects through its educational fund, the Collibri Foundation, managed by the King Baudouin Foundation. The foundation is currently in contact with potential partners to set up training for young people in the region.

Colruyt launches new functionalities for MyColruyt

Halle, Belgium, 2017-Sep-08 — /EPR Retail News/ — Colruyt keeps investing in the digital world and launches a few new functionalities for MyColruyt with which customers can compose shopping lists. From now on, they can use the app to send their shopping directly to Collect&Go, the store chain’s online shopping service. Furthermore, customers can sort their list according to the layout of their familiar Colruyt store.

Link with Collect&Go

Since it’s launch in October 2016, MyColruyt has been downloaded more than 240,000 times. Colruyt kept working on improvements of the app and asked feedback from the users. “Since the app was launched last year, we have received a lot of useful information from our customers. A clear and direct link between MyColruyt and Collect&Go was mentioned regularly”, says Guy Elewaut, marketing manager of Colruyt Lowest Prices. “From now on, our customers can reserve online with one click on the Collect&Go icon in their shopping list and pick up their purchases afterwards in one of the Collect&Go pick-up points.” Geert Boel, business unit manager Collect&Go: “At Collect&Go we want to make shopping easier and easier for our customers. This new collaboration fits in perfectly with our view.”

Sorted by aisle

The customers also suggested the possibility to sort their shopping list in the MyColruyt app according to the layout of their Colruyt store. “Thanks to the handy guide, they can sort their shopping according to the order of the aisles. This makes shopping even more efficient and faster, and they are sure to have everything in their shopping carts when they arrive at the check-out”, says Elewaut. The Colruyt stores layout is the same in general, but there can be local differences. “At the beginning of July, we started to integrate the new functionality and today it is available for more than 150 Colruyt stores”, according to Elewaut.

Many more updates are scheduled. The search function will be extended with additional filters, for vegetarian products for instance. In the fall, Colruyt will also work on better correspondence between MyColruyt and the Xtra app launched in April.

Digital shopping lists

My Colruyt is freely available for iOS and Android. Customers compose digital shopping lists from the complete assortment of their store and can select ingredients from 7,000 Colruyt recipes in the app. They can also find all the prices in their store, see all products with Red Prices or a discount and save their favourites. Thanks to the open Wi-Fi in the stores, they can check off their purchases on the list as they shop.

Colruyt: Eoly sponsors the Belgian Solar Team for the World Solar Race in Australia

Colruyt: Eoly sponsors the Belgian Solar Team for the World Solar Race in Australia

Halle, Belgium, 2017-Sep-08 — /EPR Retail News/ — October 8 will see the start of the World Solar Race in Australia. This is a biannual race for solar-powered cars. The international race is approximately 3,000 kilometres long and crosses Australia. This year Eoly, Colruyt Group’s green energy manufacturer and supplier, is one of the official partners to the Belgian Solar Team. And with good reason, because the solar car and Eoly share the same ambitions: to stimulate, promote, and actively use solar power in useful ways.

Solar car from Leuven

Belgium has been represented by a team of engineering students from the University of Leuven since 2005. This year, the team consists of twenty-one students, who have built ‘Punch Two’. This solar car is smaller, lighter, and faster than its predecessor, ‘Punch One’. Joachim Verheyen, Solar Team’s team manager, explains: “In order to qualify for the world championship in Australia, the cars have to meet several standards, which change every year. This year, we’re only allowed to use 4 m² of solar panels. This forced us to adjust the design, which is why the Punch Two is smaller than the Punch One.” And although there are fewer solar panels on the car, this has not diminished its speed.

Working together with Eoly

Eoly, a green energy manufacturer and pioneer in new sustainable technologies, is especially proud of this collaboration. Stephan Windels, Eoly’s business unit manager, says: “It was these students’ entrepreneurial drive and dynamics that pushed us over the edge. We support them in this great adventure, which shows what renewable energy sources can do in the future. We at Eoly are all hoping for the first Belgian winner of the Solar Challenge.”But that’s not where the story ends: Eoly wants to help the students improve the solar panels’ cooling system in time for the 2019 World Solar Challenge.

Ambition

Before leaving for Australia, the Punch Two was exhaustively tested at the Ford racetrack in Lommel. Under ideal circumstances, the solar car reached a top speed of 120 km/h. “We’ve been working on the car for more than a year, and we dreamed of reaching speeds like this. The maximum speed in Australia is 120 km/h. Going faster is entirely pointless”, says team manager Joachim Verheyen .During the Solar Challenge, the car will have an average speed of 80 km/h and speed up when it needs to overtake other solar cars. With 1,500 kilometres on the odometer, the car, as well as the Leuven students, are ready to claim their spot in the top three. That is their ambition. They have failed at winning the race six times so far, and winning it this year would be amazing. Eoly is a proud partner, believing in the Punch Powertrain Solar Team and wishing them good luck.

Colruyt opens newly renovated store in Mortsel

Halle, Belgium, 2017-Feb-16 — /EPR Retail News/ — On Wednesday 15 February, the renovated Colruyt store in Mortsel will open its doors after a few months of renovation work. The store has been expanded and restyled into a new‑generation Colruyt store. On Wednesday 8 March, the renovated, self-service butcher’s department will also open.

New design

Store manager Brahim Choukri: “Colruyt renovates its stores to make them more efficient and to make it nicer for customers to shop. For instance, near the fresh market we replaced the plastic flaps by an air curtain. When making renovations, we always aim at simplicity and the lowest costs, as our customers expect of us.”

Renovated self-service butcher’s department

At this time, the self-service butcher’s department is being renovated. “This work will go on until Tuesday 7 March”, says head butcher Ludo Depeuter. “Until then, we will provide meat in a refrigerated counter, and cold cuts and salads in the fresh-market.”

As from 8 March, the Colruyt butchers will start cutting and packing fresh meat in the renovated self-service butcher’s department. “Customers can easily talk to them if they have questions or special orders.”

Collect&Go shops for the customer

Colruyt Mortsel still has a Collect&Go pick-up point. Brahim Choukri: “Collect&Go is the handy Colruyt service where we shop for our customers. They send their shopping list to collectandgo.be or via the app, and the Collect&Go employees have their products ready at the pick-up point on the day and time of their choice. Handy!”

Open as from 15 February

Store manager Brahim Choukri, head butcher Ludo Depeuter and their 29 employees are on hand to welcome their customers at the revamped Colruyt Mortsel as from Wednesday 15 July.

Colruyt trials meal box meant for families with kids

Halle, Belgium, 2017-Jan-31 — /EPR Retail News/ — Colruyt wants to market its own meal box, and starts testing it today (30 January 2017) with its co-workers. Colruyt’s meal box is meant for families with kids. The recipes will be accessible, easy to prepare and quick. During the test phase, the meal box will only be available in the pick-up points of Colruyt Group’s shopping service Collect&Go. A deliberate choice because it allows customers to combine the meal box with their normal shopping.

All know-how available
The meal box Colruyt is currently testing did not just happen. “We want a real solution for families with children, who want to serve a delicious, nutritious meal despite lack of time”, says Chris Van Wettere, general manager of Colruyt. “The main advantage of a meal box for our customers is that they receive all the ingredients in the proper portions and the recipe, so there shouldn’t be any leftovers.”

Colruyt will use the know-how available in the house, namely the culinary expertise of the ‘Lekker Koken’ (good cooking) team and the pick-up network of Collect&Go. The ‘Lekker Koken’ team is also the initiator of the successful Colruyt week menus, the folder recipes, the ‘Lekker Koken’ website and some thirty cookery books.

Order and pick up at Collect&Go
During this test phase, co-workers can order their meal box on the Collect&Go website. “We deliberately choose to use our own pick-up network and not to deliver at home”, says Chris Van Wettere. “The advantage is the one-stop shopping. Customers can order and pick up their box together with their other shopping such as water, fruit and toilet paper.” Moreover, Colruyt will not work with a subscription formula.

Co-workers as test group
Before marketing the meal box, it will be thoroughly tested. “About 200 co-workers are currently testing all aspects of the meal box, from ordering it over picking it up at Collect&Go to preparing the dishes and the portion size”, says Chris Van Wettere. “It is very important to us to launch a well-considered concept. We start with our own co-workers to develop and perfect our meal box. Their feedback will certainly be used.” When the test phase will be over, Colruyt will take the necessary time to evaluate and possibly adapt its meal box.

Colruyt makes shopping efficient and quick with ‘MyColruyt’ smartphone app

Halle, Belgium, 2016-Oct-12 — /EPR Retail News/ — Colruyt makes things easy for its customers with the new, simple and functional ‘MyColruyt’ smartphone app. It enables you to shop even more efficiently and quickly. The distributor thus continues his digital efforts. The application is available for Android and iOS.

A digital shopping list
Helping customers prepare for shopping more easily, that’s what this Colruyt app is all about. And that’s why it focuses on the shopping list. Customers can compose their list from the whole range of products in their Colruyt store by entering general terms (coffee, butter or milk as in a traditional shopping list) or specific products (Graindor Mocha ground coffee 500 g for instance). Or they select ingredients from one of the 6,000 Colruyt recipes in the app. Products with Red Price or Extra discount can also be added to the list.

Custom-made for the customer
By means of the Extra card, the app also focuses on personalisation for the customer’s comfort. If he logs in with the card, he can save his favourite products and consult all current prices in his Colruyt store. With MyColruyt, he can also add products from his personal offers or most recent receipt. Moreover, Colruyt developed a ‘gluten’ filter showing customers whether a recipe or private label product is gluten-free. In time, more filters will be added.

Open Wi-Fi at the store
A few months ago, nearly all 230 Colruyt stores started offering open Wi-Fi. An ideal addition to MyColruyt enabling customers to quickly find what they are looking for.

Halle, Belgium, 2016-1-7 — /EPR Retail News/ — Checks by the FASFC showed that the allowed amount of ESBO (Epoxidized Soybean Oil) was exceeded in the Torti-Ya! tortilla preparation based on potatoes and onions of the brand 5 Senses (glass jar of 350 g).

Epoxidized soybean oil is used as a plasticizer to make the coating of the jar’s lid more flexible. It is not used as an ingredient. Consuming the tortilla preparation will therefore not cause acute toxic symptoms.

However, a repeated intake of too high ESBO amounts can negatively impact some organs, such as the lever, kidneys and uterus.  That is why Colruyt and Collect&Go are removing the product from the shelves as a precaution. They ask their customers not to consume the product and to return it to the store. The product will then be refunded.
Meanwhile, all stores have removed the products from the shelves.
