Dixons Carphone appoints Alex Baldock as Group Chief Executive

LONDON, 2018-Jan-23 — /EPR Retail News/ — Dixons Carphone plc announces the appointment of Alex Baldock as Group Chief Executive from April 2018, to succeed Sebastian James who has informed the board of his decision to step down around the end of the financial year after six years in the role. Sebastian will be joining Walgreens Boots Alliance later this year.

Alex Baldock is currently Group Chief Executive of Shop Direct plc, the UK’s second largest pure-play online retailer, a position which he has held since 2012.

Ian Livingston, Chairman of Dixons Carphone plc, said:

“Seb has made an outstanding contribution to both the creation and success of Dixons Carphone. It is a much stronger company today than when he became CEO of Dixons Retail in 2012 with revenue, profit and customer satisfaction all substantially higher. The Group is now the market leader in eight countries.”

“On behalf of the Board and all our colleagues, I would like to thank Seb for all that he has done over the past six years as CEO of first Dixons Retail and now Dixons Carphone. We wish him every success in his new role.”

“The Board and I are delighted to welcome Alex Baldock to the Group. He has an outstanding track record in leading large, complex consumer-facing businesses. He’s led Shop Direct through one of UK Retail’s fastest, most far-reaching and most successful digital transformations, delivering five consecutive years of record financial performance, with strongly rising sales and an almost tenfold increase in profits.

“We wanted Alex for his strategic clarity, relentless execution and his ability to inspire people to get behind him at every step. We look forward to Alex bringing that leadership to the Group as we build on our market-leading positions.”

Sebastian James said:

“It has been an enormous privilege to lead this business and to work with such passionate and committed colleagues over the last few years. Together, I think that we can be very proud of the profound transformation that we have seen in Dixons Carphone and the sound footing, customer affection, and place in the world that it now enjoys. I offer my most sincere thanks to Ian, the Board and my colleagues for their support and friendship over these years. I will be very sad to leave, tempered only by the fact that I know that Alex will do a terrific job of leading the company and driving it on to
new heights.”

Alex Baldock said:

“I can’t wait to get started at Dixons Carphone. Seb and the team have achieved an extraordinary amount, not least reinforcing Dixons Carphone’s position as a leading electrical and mobile retailer in Europe at a time of wrenching change. It’s with great excitement that I look forward to getting to know the people and the customers at Dixons Carphone, and to building on these achievements. Dixons Carphone is exceptionally well-placed to help customers navigate the complex, fast-changing world of technology and mobile, and I feel privileged that Ian and the Board have asked me to lead the Group to make the most of that opportunity.”

  • Importantly, Team Knowhow will be able to aid customers irrespective of where their technology was originally purchased.

London, 2017-Jun-12 — /EPR Retail News/ — In July 2015, Dixons Carphone’s Connected World Services (CWS) division and Sprint entered into an agreement to open and manage a number of Sprint-branded stores in the US and provide certain consultancy services to Sprint. In March 2016 they entered into a further agreement to deploy Honeybee into the Sprint retail estate.

Andrew Harrison, Dixons Carphone Deputy Group CEO said:

“We have enjoyed working with Sprint to accelerate their store opening programme over the last two years and have developed an estate and a pipeline to help support their ambitious growth plans. With the significant shift in the US mobile market, now is the right time to transfer these stores to Sprint, and to concentrate on our exciting software business, Honeybee. It has been a privilege to work so closely with Marcelo and his excellent team as they turn around this amazing business and we look forward to making Honeybee as successful for Sprint as it is for us.”

Kevin Crull, President of Omnichannel sales at Sprint said:

Dixons Carphone’s Seb James on 4Q 2016/17: continued to grow our business and maintained very high levels of customer satisfaction

London, 2017-May-25 — /EPR Retail News/ —

Another year of growth for Dixons Carphone

Trading update for the 16 weeks ended 29 April 2017

  • Group reported revenues up 9% for the full year (up 6% in Q4)
    • like-for-like revenues up 4% for the full year (up 2% in Q4)
    • growth across all regions
  • Group gross margins broadly stable across the year
  • Group Headline PBT guidance of £485m-£490m (previous guidance £475m-£495m)
FY revenues Reported revenues % change Local currency % change1 Like-for-like % change2
UK & Ireland 2% 2% 4%
Nordics 20% 5% 1%
Southern Europe 20% 4% 6%
Connected World Services 41% 37% n/a
Group 9% 3% 4%

Note:
In the UK & Ireland, like-for-like revenues in the full year improved by approximately 3% as a result of sales successfully transferred from closed stores and sales disruptions. This mainly benefited UK&I electricals, where like-for-like revenues grew 7%.

Q4 revenues Reported revenues % change Local currency % change1 Like-for- like % change2
UK & Ireland (1)% (1)% 2%
Nordics 20% 7% 2%
Southern Europe 16% 6% 5%
Connected World Services 12% 11% n/a
Group 6% 2% 2%

Note:
In the UK & Ireland, like-for-like revenues in Q4 improved by approximately 4% as a result of sales successfully transferred from closed stores. This mainly benefited UK&I electricals, where like-for-like revenues grew 7%.

Seb James, Group Chief Executive, said:

“I am pleased to be reporting on another good year at Dixons Carphone. Despite a lively political backdrop, we have been able to continue to grow our business and maintain very high levels of customer satisfaction across the Group. We have continued to evolve our approach to multi-channel and we have gained an even better understanding of how the online and offline worlds work together to help customers make great choices on these important and life-enhancing technologies.

Our full year like-for-like sales of 4% over the year is pleasing across the Group; in the last quarter, sales in the UK & Ireland were – especially in phone – impacted by the later launch of the iconic (and excellent) Samsung S8 and by a late Easter. Given our performance despite this headwind, our view is that the UK consumer continues to be active in the market, but we anticipate no let-up in their – very rational – view that price and service are critical factors in deciding where to shop.

Finally, I would like to thank our 42,000 colleagues in eleven countries around the world for their tireless work this year.  Electrical and phone retail can be a complex and lively business, but our colleagues have done a great job of making it look easy.”

UK & Ireland

The UK & Ireland has had a good year with full year like-for-like revenues up 4% driven by a strong electricals performance. This has more than offset a tough year in phone, hampered by product issues, a limited supply in the market and some shift to SIM only. Total revenues grew by 2%. Q4 like-for-like revenues grew 2%, within this electricals grew strongly, whilst phone was impacted by the deferred release of Samsung S8 which was pushed back five weeks. During the year we have all but completed the transformation of our stores to the 3-in-1 format. We have also acquired and integrated Simplifydigital and doubled our market share of the broadband switch market, launched a brand new Carphone Warehouse web platform, whilst continuing to be competitive on price and maintaining very high levels of customer satisfaction.

Nordics

The Nordics delivered full year like-for-like revenues up 1% against a relatively tough backdrop. We have been focussed on managing both sales and margins whilst remaining price competitive and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction. Q4 like-for-like revenues grew 2% against a tough comparative. The new warehouse at Jönköping is now fully operational and we have completed the integration of the Fona business in Denmark.

Southern Europe

Southern Europe has had another very good year, delivering full year like-for-like revenues up 6%. With Greece a particularly strong performer, the business continues to gain market share and improve its service and delivery propositions and in Spain the SmartHouse initiative is providing good momentum against a tough overall market backdrop.

Energy provider SSE and Dixons Carphone join forces to create a ‘one-stop’ solution for customers to manage their homes

LONDON, 2016-Dec-14 — /EPR Retail News/ — Two of Britain’s biggest brands have announced a partnership to create a ‘one-stop’ solution that will give customers access to all the support and services they need to manage their homes, from boilers to laptops, dishwashers to wifi.

As the home becomes increasingly connected, energy provider SSE and retailer Dixons Carphone have joined forces to develop a unique solution that leverages their existing expertise. This includes SSE’s highly skilled engineers, Dixons Carphone’s leading after-care service from Knowhow, and honeyBee, the market-leading digital platform from Connected World Services. This combination aims to bring connected home benefits to everyone, not just the tech savvy.

The partnership will be able to support all vital service requirements customers may have in the home. It will bring nationwide support to the UK & Ireland through the two brands’ combined customer base of around 10 million households, supported by a 4,000-strong workforce of highly skilled engineers and technical advisers and 1,200 stores.

Customers will be able to control connected devices in the home, purchase a wide-range of recommended products, arrange installation of smart thermostats or security systems, get peace of mind cover and help to troubleshoot technical and maintenance issues.

Together, SSE and Dixons Carphone will be building and trialling new connected product and service propositions through 2017, paving the way for a consumer launch thereafter. The combined customer base will be the first to benefit from a range of exclusive deals.

Will Morris, SSE MD Retail said:

“Together, we are developing a solution that isn’t just focused on launching the latest technology, but on meeting customers’ desire for a simple, flexible way to control, manage and maintain their homes. To do this, we are taking a customer first approach, leveraging SSE’s expertise and proven track record in providing essential services in the home. The powerful combination with Dixons Carphone’s unique platform, leading customer support function via Knowhow and high street presence puts us in a strong position in what is a nascent market with significant potential.

“This is another big step on our journey towards becoming a market-leading retailer of energy and essential services, by digitising and diversifying our business and consistently delighting our customers.”

Andrew Harrison, Deputy CEO Dixons Carphone said:

“We live in an increasingly connected world, where keeping our devices working at home, at work and on the move, with busy family and professional lives can be a minefield. CurrysPCWorld and Knowhow are out delivering, installing and fixing these products 365 days a year and our market leading honeyBee platform provides an easy way to monitor and control these devices, so we are incredibly excited to partner with SSE and extend our relationship with customers further into the home.”

About SSE

Dixons Carphone launches social media campaign #ThereForMe on Heads Together World Mental Health Day event

LONDON, 2016-Oct-12 — /EPR Retail News/ — Today (October 10, 2016), Dixons Carphone will team up with The Mix and the Heads Together campaign to celebrate inspirational people who have provided psychological and mental health support to someone in their time of need.

During a special Heads Together World Mental Health Day event at the London Eye and County Hall, Dixons Carphone will launch #ThereForMe, a social media campaign to highlight how everyone has tough times and thank those people who are there for us when we need them.

Dixons Carphone is a Founding Partner of Heads Together – a campaign spearheaded by The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry, which aims to end stigma around mental health and change the conversation from fear and shame, to confidence and support. The campaign wants everyone to feel comfortable with their everyday mental wellbeing and be able to support friends and families through difficult times. Heads Together is celebrating this support on World Mental Health Day and at the London Eye event the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry will meet people who have helped each other with their mental health, to find out about the support that can make all the difference.

Heads Together brings together eight UK charities which reflect the passions of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry, including Dixon Carphone’s charity partner of fifteen years, The Mix, who support over 2 million young people each year through digital and helpline services. It is hoped that the #ThereForMe campaign will also raise vital funds to support the essential work that The Mix does.

Anyone wanting to take part in #ThereForMe is encouraged to visit www.thereforme.org and follow the easy three step process. Alternatively, they can call into any Currys, PC World or Carphone Warehouse store and ask a store colleague for assistance.

Already taking part in #ThereForMe are GMTV star Andrew Castle and Dixons Carphone CEO Seb James.

Speaking of the importance of this campaign to Dixons Carphone, Group Chief Executive, Seb James, said: “Sadly we all experience tough times directly or indirectly at some point in our life, and although the catalyst may vary, the impact on our own mental health and those around us can be immense. As with everyone, mental wellbeing impacts my ability to be a good husband, father, son, friend and colleague, so I am delighted to be supporting Heads Together with our charity partner The Mix and raising awareness on World Mental Health Day.”

CEO of The Mix, Chris Martin, said: “Every day, The Mix works with young people struggling with their mental health through our digital, social and mobile services. We are enormously excited to be joining Dixons Carphone and the Heads Together campaign to launch the #ThereForMe campaign online and in Currys PC World and Carphone Warehouse stores across the country. This innovative use of social media is a huge step towards challenging stigma around talking about our mental health by celebrating the invaluable role that friends and family play in supporting our wellbeing when we struggle.”

Louise Jones, a member of the Heads Together London Marathon team for The Mix, said: “When I bashed my foot playing hockey in school, I knew I had to make it better but needed support to make that happen. When I hit rock bottom with my mental health, I knew I had to make it better but needed support to make that happen. Being in control of yourself, physically AND mentally, often can’t happen without support. And that’s ok. We need to acknowledge that, and appreciate it. I would not be here, right now, without the support of those closest to me, professionals, organisations like The Mix… and running! So thank you. For believing in my ability to get better, but giving me a push to get there.”

Across 1,000 Carphone Warehouse and Currys PC World stores in the UK and Ireland between 10th and 16th October, people can have their photo taken with a specially designed #ThereForMe photo frame. To find details of your local store or to simply upload a picture in the comfort of your own home, please visit: www.thereforme.org and help banish the negative stigma surrounding mental health. To make a donation to The Mix and help fund their vital advice service for young people across the UK, please visit: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/fund/ThereForMe.

Notes to editors:

My name is Milca, I’m 20 and from London. I want to say a big thank you to James and The Mix for supporting me during my time of crisis.

I have EUPD, emotionally unstable personality disorder. It means that I deal with long episodes of depression, anxiety and panic attacks. I have also self-harmed and made attempts to take my own life. My disorder has caused a devastating impact on my life – not only has it affected my studies, but it meant I often ended up in hospital.

A few years ago I was directed to The Mix by ChildLine. At the time I was experiencing problems with food and had worsening urges to self-harm, but after speaking to James and others in the Mix community, I learnt to look for healthy distractions, like eating properly and exercising, instead of engaging in more harmful behaviours. I then started using the discussion boards, and with James and The Mix’s encouragement, I found I was able to support others, using my own experience. I also was able to express how I was feeling – it felt good knowing that I had the platform to do that, like I was being heard.

I’m currently studying for a BSc in Bioscience and I hope to be a clinical scientist or perhaps work in dentistry. I’m still an active member of The Mix’s community and just like James, I’m helping to provide a safe space for young people to talk about what’s on their minds and share support.

“I learnt to look for healthy distractions, like eating properly and exercising, instead of engaging in more harmful behaviours.”

About #ThereForMe

Launching on World Mental Health Day, October 10th, #ThereForMe will encourage people to take one simple action: to go into any Dixons Carphone store (TBC) and have a photo taken in a photo frame holding up a sign with the name of a person who has supported them through a challenging time.

These photos will be shared on social media with the hashtag #ThereForMe and uploaded to our campaign microsite, which will also provide an option to make a donation to The Mix. For those that can’t visit a store there will also be the opportunity to upload your photo online and we will encouraging as many people to say thanks to someone that was #ThereForMe

About The Mix and Heads Together

Dixons Carphone’s charity partner, The Mix, is a confidential multi-channel help service, supporting the physical and mental wellbeing of young people under 25, whatever their issue, through the technology of their choice.

The remarkable work The Mix is doing to safeguard the mental well-being of our nation’s young people has gained the support of the ‘Heads Together’ campaign, spearheaded by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry. This campaign is working hard to change the conversation around mental health, from one of shame and prejudice, to one of greater acceptance and understanding.

As the 2017 Virgin Money London Marathon Charity of the Year, The Mix and the seven other charity partners working to end the stigma surrounding mental health have a huge platform upon which to raise both funds and awareness.

Southern Europe 24% 8% 13%

Note:

  • In the UK&I both like-for-like and total revenue were negatively affected by approximately 1% from refurbishment disruption.
  • Like-for-like revenue improved by approximately 1% as a result of sales transferred from closed stores.

Seb James, Group Chief Executive, said: “We have had another very good quarter and I am happy to be reporting this level of performance today. We are delivering pleasing growth in all markets and continued high levels of customer satisfaction, and, thus far, continue to see no detectable impact of the Brexit vote on consumer behaviour in the UK.

We have an ambitious programme of development right across the Group this year, and this is being delivered on plan. In the UK & Ireland, our exciting new eCommerce platform for Carphone Warehouse is now live, and our 3-in-1 property programme is well on track. In addition, we are now able to deliver the whole Dixons Carphone small-product range to customers across 500 Carphone Warehouse stores, making us one of the biggest and most convenient click-and-collect organisations in the UK. In the Nordics, we will soon start serving customers from our new, enormous, and state-of-the-art small-product warehouse in Sweden. This has been delivered on time, and slightly better than budget.

In our Know how division, we continue to plan for our Leeds services pilot later this month and develop our brand and propositions. We are seeing real progress in our Connected World Services business as well, and have signed a new agreement with TalkTalk which sees us expanding our distribution activity significantly. The Sprint rollout continues, and we now have 31 stores across 5 regions. The implementation of honeyBee is also going well at Sprint, and we have a strong pipeline of potential new honeyBee clients.

Looking forward, we are optimistic about the future and about our ability to continue to outperform, without in any way being complacent. We live in a world with increasingly discerning customers and with more moving parts than ever and we will continue to succeed only by remaining nimble and determined. We are lucky to have such a strong cohort of people to make this happen, and I would like to finish by thanking them for their hard work so far this year.”

(1) Like-for-like revenues are calculated based on Headline store and internet sales using constant exchange rates. New stores are included where they have been open for a full financial year both at the beginning and end of the financial period. Revenues from franchise stores are excluded and closed stores are excluded for any period of closure during either period. Customer support agreement, insurance and wholesale revenues along with revenue from Connected World Services and other non-retail businesses are excluded from like-for-like calculations. Revenues from Carphone Warehouse stores-within-a-store are included in like-for-like.

University of Edinburgh Business School partners with Dixons Carphone to develop teaching and research in data science

LONDON, 2015-12-4 — /EPR Retail News/ — University of Edinburgh Business School has announced a new partnership with Europe’s leading specialist electrical and telecommunications retailer and services company, Dixons Carphone.

The educational tie-up will champion and develop the role of data science and analytics in business education. As business becomes ever more digital and data-driven, there is a growing and vital need to develop graduate knowledge and skills in data science and analytics.

The collaboration will help fund a major drive to develop teaching and research in data science within the Business School with close to £500,000 invested in various initiatives.

This partnership was launched at an event at the School this week (2 December) with big data leaders from Google, Experian and Optima speaking about developments and challenges in managing customer data and analytics for competitive advantage in business.

It will give students and scholars the latest insights to help them master the big data skills needed to analyse consumer behaviour, retail and marketing trends. It will also see the creation of a new full-time academic role, devoted to championing big data and give the School access to cutting-edge software and data for teaching and research.

In addition, a number of generous Dixons Carphone scholarships will be offered to promising applicants to the School’s MSc and MBA programmes.

Professor Ian Clarke, Dean of University of Edinburgh Business School, said:

“We are very excited to announce our new partnership with Dixons Carphone. Big data is now ubiquitous, so it’s essential we equip the next generation of business leaders and entrepreneurs with the skills to manage and analyse it, for the benefit of organisations and their customers.

“By linking-up with one of Europe’s leading consumer brands we will ensure our students have access to the latest applied insights and software, and can gain hands-on experience in this rapidly developing field, to further strengthen their employment prospects on graduation.”

The retail giant also hopes to create opportunities for Business School graduates who take part in the initiative.

Stuart Ramage, E-Commerce Director, Dixons Carphone, said:

“We are really pleased to announce this collaboration and we welcome the innovative approach Edinburgh’s leading academics are taking in giving students real-world applied data-analytics experience during their studies.

“Our highly successful e-commerce operation has been built around the effective utilisation of consumer analytics. With this new partnership we therefore want to play our part in building a new generation of data-savvy, business graduates who will help drive our company and the industry forward.”

John Davis, Industry Head, Google UK spoke at the launch. He commented on the partnership:

“Actionable, data-driven insights are key to driving business performance, so we need to upskill the future workforce who can tap into these opportunities. This new partnership between business educators and analytics practitioners is a very welcome step in the right direction.”

Sebastian James, Group Chief Executive, said:

LONDON, 2015-9-10 — /EPR Retail News/ — “This is a very encouraging first quarter with excellent growth for the Group overall, showing strong like-for-like revenues in the UK driven principally by significant market share gain in phone sales. Against the World Cup last year I was also pleased to see growth in UK electricals. At the same time, we have continued to see improvements in customer satisfaction and price competitiveness through the period and across all our major territories. Our Nordic business has also experienced decent growth overall against a slightly less buoyant market backdrop.

Our multi-channel proposition continues to make good headway against our competitors, both on and offline, and we continue to invest in those areas that will ensure our long term profitability: service, delivery options, expansion of free warranty, digital marketing and Norwegian price competitiveness. Work has started well on our new venture with Sprint in the US and we are opening our first stores next week. The integration is also going smoothly with our UK head-office move on track and the new management structures in place and working well.

Overall, a very good start to the trading year but I am aware that there is plenty of the year left to go. In the next quarter we will anniversary the startlingly successful iPhone6 launch, the consolidation of the mobile market and, later in the year, an extraordinary Black Friday. Nevertheless, our whole team believes that the business is in very good shape to have another successful year, and I look forward to giving a further update at the interims in December.”

Notes
