Four former Food Lion units located in Delaware and one in Maryland will reopen as Weis Markets’ stores

SUNBURY, PA, 2016-Oct-18 — /EPR Retail News/ — Weis Markets today (October 13, 2016) announced four former Food Lion units located in Millsboro, Lewes, Millville and Rehoboth Beach, DE, and one unit in Easton, MD will reopen as Weis Markets’ stores this Friday, October 14 at 7:00 a.m.  As part of the conversion, the stores will offer an enhanced shopping experience with improved variety in every department.

Weis Markets improvements and enhancements include:

Weis Markets welcomes R. Gregory Zeh, Jr. as VP/chief information officer

As CIO, Mr. Zeh will provide strategic vision and leadership in the development and implementation of solutions that provide business value, engaging customer experiences, and effective management of technology risks. Mr. Zeh will oversee the Company’s day-to-day information technology functions, working in support of marketing and merchandising, supply chain and in-store management retail applications. He reports to Kurt Schertle, the Company’s Chief Operating Officer.

During his 25 year career, Mr. Zeh has worked in increasingly senior information technology and finance positions in the food retail and services industries including as vice president/chief information officer at Price Chopper Supermarkets. Prior to joining the company, he was chief financial officer of Mazzone Management Group, LTD.

Mr. Zeh is a graduate of the University at Albany State/University of New York. He is actively involved in community service through his active participation in the volunteer fire service. He is currently Vice President of the Shaker Road-Loudonville Fire Department and a past chief of the Town of Westerlo Volunteer Fire Company.

Weis Markets to acquire location and assets of Nell’s Family Market in East Berlin, PA from C&S Wholesale Grocers

Sunbury, PA, 2016-Oct-07 — /EPR Retail News/ — Weis Markets today (October 5, 2016) announced plans to purchase the location and assets of Nell’s Family Market of East Berlin LLC in East Berlin, PA from C&S Wholesale Grocers. This purchase of the grocery store located at 30 Primrose Lane in East Berlin, Pa. will be completed at the end of October and an early November reopening is planned.

This store and pharmacy will remain open in the weeks prior to the finalization of the purchase in late October. As part of this transition, Weis Markets plans to interview current employees of the East Berlin store whom are interested in employment at Weis Markets.

“This is a great store, with an excellent reputation for customer service. This purchase will allow us to increase our market presence in Adams County,” said Kurt Schertle, Weis Markets’ Chief Operating Officer. “As part of this process, we’re interested in interviewing Nell’s associates for employment at our company since they’ve helped make this store successful. We look forward to talking to them.”

This is Weis Markets’ second acquisition of a Nell’s location. Last year, the Company purchased and converted a Nell’s Family Market in Hanover and reopened the store on September 15, 2015. It subsequently remodeled the store in 2016.

Weis Markets to sell wine in its in-store café in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania

Sunbury, PA, 2016-Sep-23 — /EPR Retail News/ — Weis Markets today (September 22, 2016) announced it has begun a pilot program to sell wine in its in-store café in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania where beer is currently sold. The company plans to sell wine in all 49 of its Pennsylvania cafes by late November, around the Thanksgiving holiday.

The Mechanicsburg café will have a selection of approximately 80 varieties of wine during the pilot program and will also include a chilled section. Ultimately, the cafes are expected to sell up to 400 varieties of wine. The Mechanicsburg café will still offer more than 900 varieties of beer, including an extensive selection of craft and local craft beers.

“We’ve sold beer in our Pennsylvania cafes for more than ten years and throughout this time, we’ve been repeatedly asked one question: when are you going to sell wine? Now, we have an answer,” said Kurt Schertle, Weis Markets Chief Operating Officer. “Starting this week, we are selling wine in our Mechanicsburg café and are looking to quickly roll the program out to all of our licensed cafes in Pennsylvania over the coming months. We want to offer our customers improved convenience and a more complete shopping experience; selling wine in our cafes allows us to do both.”

Weis Markets purchased Nell’s Shur-Fine Market in Grandview Plaza in Hanover, PA

Store will be upgraded and reopen on Sunday September 20. Pharmacy and nearby Weis store will remain open during interim period

Sunbury, PA, 2015-9-1 — /EPR Retail News/ — Weis Markets today announced it has completed the purchase of Nell’s Shur-Fine Market in Grandview Plaza in Hanover.

This store will temporarily close while it is being converted and upgraded. It will reopen on Sunday, September 20 at 6am.

During this interim period, the former Nell’s Pharmacy will remain open Monday through Friday, from 9am to 7pm and on Saturday from 9am to 5pm.
Weis Markets’ nearby store and its in-store pharmacy on South Baltimore Street will also remain open during this period. This store will close once the former Nell’s location has reopened as a Weis Markets’ store on September 20.

“We’ve completed the purchase and have begun upgrading this facility. As part of this process, we’ve hired 70 former Nell’s associates to work at this location,” said Kurt Schertle, Weis Markets Chief Operating Officer. “During the interim period, we will expand the organic, gluten free and natural variety in every department and install some new dairy and frozen cases. We look forward to reopening on September 20.”

Weis Markets purchased the location and its assets from an affiliate of C&S Wholesale Grocers, Inc. The former Nell’s Shur-Fine location is located at 1424 Baltimore Street in the Grandview Plaza.
