Walgreens initiative to combat drug abuse crisis successfully disposed of 72 tons of medications in first year

Company also continues participation in DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

DEERFIELD, Ill., 2017-Apr-28 — /EPR Retail News/ — Walgreens today ( April 26, 2017) announced its safe medication disposal program has collected and safely disposed of 72 tons of medications since the launch of the program in 2016. The program, launched in February 2016, is the first ongoing national effort of its kind by a retailer to combat the national drug abuse crisis and help fight the rise in overdose-related deaths in the U.S.

Walgreens installed safe medication disposal kiosks, available during regular pharmacy hours, in more than 600 pharmacies across 45 states and the District of Columbia; that’s more than 100 kiosks above the program’s original goal. In its first year, the program has resulted in the collection and disposal of 72 tons of unwanted medication, or the equivalent weight of about 40 midsize cars.

As part of its continuing effort to combat drug abuse, Walgreens will again participate in the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) sponsored National Prescription Drug Take Back Day held on Saturday, April 29. In addition to Walgreens stores with year-round safe medication disposal kiosks, other select Walgreens stores throughout the country will serve as a collection point on April 29 for law enforcement to collect unwanted, unused or expired medications for safe disposal.

Walgreens safe medication disposal kiosks allow individuals to safely and conveniently dispose of their unwanted, unused or expired prescriptions, including controlled substances, and over-the-counter medications, at no cost. The kiosks at Walgreens pharmacies are available during regular pharmacy hours and offer one of the best ways to ensure medications are not accidentally used or intentionally misused by someone else.

Walgreens has also worked to make naloxone, a lifesaving opioid antidote, available without requiring a prescription at its pharmacies in 44 states and Washington, D.C., adding 9 states to its original goal announced last year. Naloxone can be used in the event of an overdose to reverse the effects of heroin or other opioid drugs if administered in time. The medication can be dispensed in accordance with each state’s pharmacy regulations at more than 7,600 Walgreens pharmacies. In the few remaining states where a prescription is required, Walgreens is available and eager to work with regulators to help update rules to allow for dispensing of naloxone without a prescription.

“Since we launched this program last year, we have been truly encouraged by how our patients have embraced the opportunities to safely dispose of their medications. Simply put, this epidemic is one of the most serious issues facing our country today, and this program is making a difference in helping fight against prescription drug abuse,” said Richard Ashworth, Walgreens president of pharmacy and retail operations.

As highlighted in recently published research in the Journal of the American Pharmacists Association (JAPhA)1 the availability of naloxone at pharmacies, patient education and safe drug disposal kiosks are key prevention initiatives to address the opioid epidemic and reduce the increasing national burden of opioid overdose. According to the 2015 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, an estimated 6.4 million Americans misused a prescription drug in 2015.

DEERFIELD, Ill., 2016-Oct-19 — /EPR Retail News/ — Walgreens today ( October 18, 2016) announced it has reached its goal of installing more than 500 safe medication disposal kiosks this year at its pharmacies in 35 states and Washington D.C. The program, first announced in February, is the first ongoing national effort of its kind by a retailer to combat drug abuse and will expand to two additional states, Nevada and Maryland, by early November.

Since the installation began earlier this year, more than 10 tons of medication have been collected and safely disposed. The kiosks provide a year-round, safe and convenient way to dispose of unwanted, unused or expired prescriptions, including controlled substances, and over-the-counter medications at no cost.

Safe medication disposal kiosks are available during regular pharmacy hours (24 hours a day at most kiosk locations) and offer one of the best ways to ensure medications are not accidentally used or intentionally misused by someone else.

(An interactive map of stores with a safe medication disposal kiosk is available at Walgreens.com/CombatDrugAbuse)

In addition to offering a year-round solution for individuals to dispose of their medications, Walgreens continues to participate in DEA sponsored National Prescription Drug Take Back Days, serving as a collection point in communities for law enforcement to collect unwanted, unused or expired medications for safe disposal. The next DEA sponsored National Prescription Drug Take Back Day will be held on Oct. 22.

Walgreens has also made naloxone, a lifesaving opioid antidote, available without requiring a prescription in more than 3,800 pharmacies in 20 states in accordance with state pharmacy regulations. Next week, Walgreens will begin offering naloxone without a prescription at pharmacies in Colorado, Oregon and Utah and will continue to make the medication more accessible and easier to obtain in states where regulations allow.

“Walgreens has taken an important first step to reduce the misuse of medications throughout the country and curb the rise of overdose deaths,” said Richard Ashworth, Walgreens president of pharmacy and retail operations. “We are committed to being part of a comprehensive solution to reverse this epidemic and will continue our effort to make naloxone more accessible and easier to obtain.”

In states where a prescription is required for naloxone, Walgreens is available and eager to work with regulators to help update rules to allow for dispensing without a prescription. When implementation of the program is complete under current state pharmacy regulations, naloxone will be available without requiring a prescription in more than 7,000 of Walgreens nearly 8,200 stores.

When naloxone is dispensed instructions are provided on how to administer the medication, which includes calling 911 as naloxone is not a substitute for medical care, and anyone who is administered the medication should seek immediate medical attention.

Drug abuse continues to be a public health and safety risk. More Americans die every day from drug overdoses than from motor vehicle crashes, according to the Office of National Drug Control Policy. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s 2015 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, nearly 19 million Americans misused a prescription drug in 20151. Walgreens recognizes the important role of its more than 27,000 pharmacists this October

DEERFIELD, Ill., 2016-Oct-05 — /EPR Retail News/ — In celebration of American Pharmacists Month, Walgreens is recognizing its more than 27,000 community pharmacists for their dedication to patient care, and the growing and important role they continue to play in health care today (Oct. 4, 2016).

“In communities across the country, our pharmacists have become an integral part of the health care landscape and a trusted provider to millions of patients every day,” said Richard Ashworth, Walgreens president of pharmacy and retail operations. “Being customer- and patient-led in everything that we do starts with our pharmacists and other clinicians on the frontlines, providing personalized care and service. We thank them for their hard work and dedication to the profession, and to Walgreens customers and the communities we serve.”

Walgreens pharmacists are interacting with and counseling patients in more ways than ever before through greater collaboration with other providers and an expanding scope of services. Walgreens pharmacist-led programs are driving better medication adherence and patient outcomes, and lowering overall health care costs.  Walgreens studies over the past 12 months also continue to demonstrate wider-ranging benefits across the health care spectrum as a result of the work pharmacists do, including fewer hospitalizations and emergency room visits.[1][2]

In addition, Walgreens pharmacists are playing an integral role in the ongoing fight against prescription drug abuse, with the ability to dispense the lifesaving opioid antidote naloxone without a prescription at its pharmacies in 20 states.

Walgreens also recognizes its pharmacy technicians, with National Pharmacy Technician Day on Oct. 18;  and its Healthcare Clinic nurse practitioners and physician assistants, as they are honored during National Physician Assistant Week (Oct. 6-12) and National Nurse Practitioner Week (Nov. 6–12).

“Walgreens Healthcare Clinic and pharmacy team members are the most accessible providers in the community, and providers that our patients know and trust,” Ashworth said.  “As we continue to offer more preventive health care services, work collaboratively with other providers and advocate for all of our clinicians to practice at the top of the licensure and training, we thank our nurse practitioners, physician assistants and pharmacy technicians for delivering extraordinary care and support.”

HHS and Walgreens to distribute more than $10 million worth of free flu shot vouchers for uninsured Americans this flu season

Washington, D.C & Deerfield, Ill., 2016-Sep-09 — /EPR Retail News/ — The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), in collaboration with Walgreens, will help provide more than $10 million worth of free flu shot vouchers this flu season to improve flu immunization rates among uninsured Americans. Through the initiative, which is in its seventh year, Walgreens has provided more than $50 million worth of vouchers to communities across the country.

HHS and Walgreens are distributing vouchers through a variety of outreach efforts, local events and community and faith-based organizations nationwide.

“Since 2010, this partnership has helped us make substantial strides in addressing disparities in flu vaccination coverage by providing free flu shots for more than 1.4 million people,” said J. Nadine Gracia, MD, MSCE, deputy assistant secretary for minority health and director of the HHS Office of Minority Health. “As the flu season approaches, our continued collaboration will help protect hundreds of thousands of people from influenza, which can make chronic health problems worse or lead to hospitalization or even death.”

Richard Ashworth, Walgreens president of pharmacy and retail operations, said: “We’re proud to continue to grow our collaboration with HHS and to be working together to meet the health care needs of the communities we serve. We know that cost can be a barrier for some people when it comes to vaccinations and other preventive care. And by providing access to flu shots at no cost for those who are eligible, we can make a significant impact by protecting more people throughout the flu season.”

Individuals who are eligible can call 866-994-6757 to find the nearest location where flu shot vouchers may be available. DEERFIELD, Ill., 2016-Jun-20 — /EPR Retail News/ — In the lead up to National HIV Testing Day on June 27, Walgreens and Greater Than AIDS, a leading national public information response to the domestic HIV/AIDS epidemic, are teaming with health departments and local AIDS service organizations (ASOs) to offer free HIV testing and counseling about new prevention strategies, including Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP).

Testing will take place at select Walgreens stores in 150 participating cities, June 23-25:

  • Thursday, June 23 from 3 p.m. – 7 p.m.
  • Friday, June 24 from 3 p.m. – 7 p.m.
  • Saturday, June 25 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Results are provided on site by trained counselors. Alere North America, bioLytical Laboratories and OraSure have donated test kits for the activation.

For a complete list of participating Walgreens locations and supporting partners, as well as more information about HIV testing, including year-round testing sites, visit www.greaterthan.org/walgreens.

Why get tested? While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises that all Americans be screened for HIV as a part of routine health care1, many Americans have never been tested or are not being tested as often as recommended. According to national surveys by the Kaiser Family Foundation 43 percent of Americans report never having been tested, and another 37 percent say they have not been tested in a year or longer. With early diagnosis and treatment, someone with HIV can live a healthy normal lifespan.

“This month marks 35 years since the first case of HIV. We’ve come a long way, but getting tested is a critical first step in staying healthy regardless of status,” said Tina Hoff, senior vice president and director of health communication and media partnerships at the Kaiser Family Foundation, which leads Greater Than AIDS.

Richard Ashworth, president of pharmacy and retail operations for Walgreens, said, “We are fortunate to have a strong presence in — and close relationship with — communities across America, making us uniquely suited to serve those living with HIV or at risk of being exposed to HIV. It’s one of the best ways I know to champion everyone’s right to be happy and healthy.”

“HIV is still a real and serious disease. But with the right treatment and care, people living with HIV can expect to live as long as the average person,” said Glen Pietrandoni, pharmacist and senior director of virology, specialty products and services at Walgreens. “So it’s important to take control of your health by getting a test and learning your status. If negative, there are now prevention options like PrEP, which can help prevent you from getting HIV if you are exposed to the virus. If positive, getting into care early makes a big difference in the long run.”

I Got Tested: What’s Next?, an informational guide available in both English and Spanish from Greater Than AIDS and Walgreens, will be distributed at hundreds of HIV-specialized pharmacies and through local partners in June. The guide includes information about the benefits of early treatment and PrEP.

PrEP is available by prescription to help people who are HIV negative stay negative. When taken as prescribed, PrEP has been shown to reduce the risk of HIV infection by more than 90 percent. Condoms should be used for added protection and to protect against other sexually transmitted diseases. More information about PrEP is available at http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/basics/prep.html.

Walgreens donates $100,000 to CDC Foundation to aid its Zika virus education and prevention efforts in Puerto Rico

  • Company Donates $100,000 to CDC Foundation to Aid Education and Prevention Efforts
  • All Walgreens Puerto Rico Locations to Offer CDC-Recommended Items to Prevent Zika

DEERFIELD, Ill., 2016-Mar-10 — /EPR Retail News/ — In an effort to curb the spread of Zika virus disease in Puerto Rico, Walgreens is collaborating with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the CDC Foundation to educate the public on preventive steps to avoid Zika. In addition, Walgreens is making a $100,000 donation to the CDC Foundation to aid its Zika virus education and prevention efforts.

Beginning today, March 7, all of Walgreens 120 drugstores in Puerto Rico will dedicate space to providing information on CDC-recommended steps to prevent the spread of Zika virus, which is transmitted to people primarily through the bite of an infected mosquito. The CDC, along with other health agencies, is investigating the association between Zika and microcephaly, a birth defect in which the baby’s head is smaller than expected and often has a smaller brain that may not have developed properly.

“As a pharmacy that champions everyone’s right to be happy and healthy, we are well positioned to address concerns about how anyone can protect themselves and their families from Zika, while also providing many CDC-recommended prevention products,” said Walgreens President of Pharmacy and Retail Operations Richard Ashworth. “We’re proud to work closely with the CDC and the CDC Foundation to expand their efforts to prevent the spread of this disease.”

The CDC Foundation advances the mission of the CDC through effective philanthropy and public-private partnerships that protect the health, safety and security of America and the world.

“We are grateful to Walgreens for its innovative collaboration to help extend CDC’s Zika response,” said Dr. Judith Monroe, president and CEO of the CDC Foundation. “These efforts in reaching women with prevention messaging at a critical stage will help in protecting people. The CDC Foundation is proud to help support CDC efforts to combat this health threat.”

To make Zika virus prevention products easily available and more affordable, Walgreens has lowered the price on CDC-recommended items in its Puerto Rico stores, including insect repellent with DEET, condoms and thermometers to monitor for fever.

As growing medical evidence suggests Zika may be sexually transmitted, the CDC recommends women, especially those who are pregnant or may become pregnant, and men who have traveled to or lived in an area with Zika virus, abstain from sex or use condoms during sex.

“It is gratifying to see that allies are continuously forming in education and prevention, as in the case of the CDC, the Puerto Rico Department of Health, and Walgreens who are collaborating to provide educational material about and access to Zika prevention products in Walgreens stores throughout Puerto Rico,” said Puerto Rico’s Resident Commissioner Pedro Pierluisi.

Currently, no vaccine exists to prevent or treat Zika virus. The World Health Organization recently called Zika a public health emergency of international concern and is seeking to develop vaccines, diagnostics and therapeutics to combat the disease. According to the CDC, the most common symptoms of Zika are fever, rash, joint pain or conjunctivitis (red eyes). The illness is usually mild with symptoms lasting for several days to a week after being bitten by a mosquito.

Individuals with questions about recommended products and other ways to prevent Zika virus disease are encouraged to consult with a Walgreens pharmacist or visit the CDC website for current information on Zika.

Flu shots now available with no appointment at all Walgreens, Healthcare Clinics and Duane Reade pharmacies

    • More than 90 percent of patients receiving flu shots at Walgreens have insurance to cover vaccination costs
    • Flu Index recaps states and markets hardest hit by flu last season

DEERFIELD, Ill., 2015-8-17— /EPR Retail News/ — Flu shots are now available daily with no appointment necessary at all Walgreens pharmacies and Healthcare Clinics nationwide, and Duane Reade pharmacies in New York, the company announced today.

Flu shots are offered on a walk-in basis during all pharmacy and clinic hours while an immunizing health professional is on duty, including evenings, overnights at 24-hour pharmacy locations, weekends and holidays1. Age restrictions vary by state at Walgreens pharmacies, while Healthcare Clinics can provide immunizations for patients age 2 and older.

With millions of newly insured Americans having gained coverage the past two years, more than 90 percent of those receiving flu shots at Walgreens points of care now have their immunization covered under some form of insurance, often with no co-pay or other out-of-pocket cost. Flu shots are covered for eligible patients under Medicare Part B as well as a vast majority of insurance plans.

“For nearly a decade, Walgreens has been administering flu shots to help protect our patients, customers and those around them throughout the flu season,” said Richard Ashworth, Walgreens president of pharmacy and retail operations. “With unprecedented convenience and broader coverage than ever before from health plans and insurers, it’s not only the most important preventive measure you can take for flu season, it’s also now one of the easiest.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends an annual flu shot for everyone over the age of 6 months as soon as the vaccine becomes available.

Walgreens points of care this season will offer a number of vaccine options that may include trivalent flu vaccine, a needle-free nasal alternative, a high-dose influenza vaccine for those over age 65 and a quadrivalent vaccine which protects against four strains of influenza.

DEERFIELD, Ill., 2015-3-18 — /EPR Retail News/ — With flu activity winding down in the U.S., Walgreens today announced the top markets (DMAs) and states for flu activity for this season, according to its season-ending Flu Index examining aggregate prescription data from November 2014 through February 2015.

The states with the highest rates of influenza, according to the Index, were Oklahoma, Texas, Mississippi, Texas and Tennessee. Portland, Ore., Hartford, Conn. and Boston were the markets with the least amount of flu activity.

“In just its first season, the Flu Index quickly became a resource that people – and news media in particular, came to rely upon, and strong awareness helped deliver a call to action that had a positive impact on flu immunization rates,” said Richard Ashworth, Walgreens president of pharmacy and retail operations. “This is another way in which we’re helping to better the health of our communities by providing the preventive health information and services they need.”

The Walgreens Flu Index provides state- and market-specific information regarding flu activity, and is compiled using retail prescription data for antiviral medications used to treat influenza across Walgreens locations nationwide. With the ability to generate hyper-local data that’s as specific as a single zip code, the Index was instrumental in driving consumer awareness and prevention within communities, while also serving as a valuable tool for health departments, media and others at the local level.
