Tops Friendly Markets surpasses goal of helping provide over 3 million meals through Little Brown Bags of Hope and Checkout Hunger campaigns

Williamsville, N.Y., 2018-Mar-01 — /EPR Retail News/ — TOPS is committed to helping end hunger in its local communities. Its partners like Food Bank of WNY, Foodlink, Food Bank of Central New York, and six additional are thankful for the tremendous success of the recent Little Brown Bags of Hope holiday campaign as well as the just completed Checkout Hunger, as Tops Friendly Markets announces surpassing their goal of helping provide over 3 million meals! Three million meals – equal to 30 tractor trailer trucks of food – will impact hundreds of thousands of people across the company’s three state footprint.“Both of these campaigns offered us the opportunity to come together as a community and show our support for those in need – showing that together we can truly make an amazing difference in so many people’s lives” said Frank Curci, chief executive officer for Tops Friendly Markets. 100% of the donations stayed local to the store where the donations were made. In total nine food banks across the chain’s footprint in upstate New York, northern Pennsylvania and Vermont benefit from these efforts.

The method behind the magic of the chains largest and most successful giving campaign lies in its Little Brown Bags of Hope, a term that has become synonymous with giving to the Food Banks during the holiday season. Organizers moved away from the physical bags of food during this year’s campaign in order to increase efficiencies, allowing the Food Banks to expedite donations from the store to their operating facilities and then into the market as quickly as possible. At the register, customers were asked if they wanted to support the campaign by buying a $5 Breakfast, $10 Lunch, and/or $20 Dinner for a family in need in our community.

Also new in 2017, TOPS introduced the “virtual” Little Brown Bag of Hope. Customers were able to purchase the same $5 Breakfast bag, $10 Lunch bag, and/or a $20 Dinner bag online by simply visiting www.topsmarkets.com/littlebrownbags so no matter what the weather, a donation could be made right from their phone, tablet, or desktop.

The chain’s annual Check out Hunger winter campaign ran in a similar fashion where customers were asked by their cashier if they would like to round up their bill, or make a donation of $2, $3, or $5. This year alone, Tops Friendly Markets, along with its media partners, have worked together to help provide over 1.7 million meals to families in need through the Check Out Hunger Campaign.

“The Food Bank of WNY is grateful for the continued support of Tops Friendly Markets. Their year-round generosity makes an incredible difference in the lives of hungry children, families and seniors in our community. We are thankful for their partnership as we continue to fight hunger one day at a time,” Tara A. Ellis, president and CEO of the Food Bank of WNY, said.

Tops Friendly Markets introduces Better For You packages in its bulk department

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y., 2018-Jan-23 — /EPR Retail News/ — As American’s are becoming more and more health conscious, retailers are finding customers are buying less food items in bulk and are becoming more conservative in their portion sizes. This shift to “less is more” can prove to be a challenge especially for a store team whose emphasis is the bulk department.

In an effort to not only adapt to the changing needs of the customer but to also stay abreast of the latest store trends in maximizing space while still providing a bulk option, last year Tops Friendly Markets director of edible grocery, Keith McFayden and his team took a step back and analyzed how they could accomplish both challenges with one solution.

“When we looked at the task at hand we found we could still offer our customers the items that they wanted, but be more efficient in how we went about doing so,” said McFayden. “By offering them a variety of “Better For You” portion size containers versus an endless bin with a bag and scooper, consumers can now feel confident in knowing the exact serving size, calories, and evaluate the nutritional facts.”

Better For You packages vary in size ranging from 6oz to 21oz and offer a different approach to what customers are looking for. Ideal for snacking on the go, these new packages were designed to not only contain healthy bulk food items like banana chips and locally roasted snack nuts, but also more indulgent items like locally produced chocolate covered products which better align with consumer trends as well. Additionally the change brought an expansion of organic items into the bulk section with now over 20 items being offered.

From a retail space perspective, the traditional plastic bins that were previously used took up significantly more space. Once store implementation is completed, this new approach will reduce bin size by 47.0%. The goal is to implement 12 foot tub sections (where space exist), which will allow Tops to fully merchandise the enhanced assortment.

“This new approach allows us to be more versatile,” said McFayden. “Products can be interspersed throughout the store – whether it’s on a display near a complimentary item or near the checkout, we now have the ability to have the ready to go containers available at a customer’s fingertips.”

While not all of the TOPS stores have converted their bulk departments over to the new ready to go containers, 60 of the 169 stores have already undergone the implementation with the remaining on the horizon for the balance of 2018.

The same-day delivery service will be available in the Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, NY and Erie, PA markets prior to Thanksgiving 2017. Launching the same–day delivery service as the hustle and bustle of the holiday season draws near certainly has its benefits for TOPS shoppers. “As customers are already rushing around trying to check off their holiday shopping lists, this is one less stop they will have to make on their way home from the office or cram in on a lunch break,” said Kathy Romanowski, public and media relations specialist for TOPS. “Even after the holidays, the ease of online grocery shopping will continue to benefit our customers. From those who may be housebound or home with their children to others who can’t get to the store due to transportation challenges or inclement weather, our home-delivery option is an added bonus to the everyday TOPS shopping experience.”

Additionally, not only are Instacart services available to be delivered to traditional residential communities, but also to area businesses, hotels, apartments, senior living complexes, and dorms making the service even more convenient for a broad spectrum of TOPS shoppers.

Upon launch customers can visit TopsMarkets.com/Instacart and enter their zip code to determine if they are within the current TOPS delivery area. To help celebrate the launch, TOPS is offering free delivery for the first two months when customers shop Instacart at TOPS. Once the site is live, complete details on this offer will be available at TopsMarkets.com/Instacart.

Since the program began in 2005, nearly 300 retail produce managers, representing more than 90 different retail banners, have been honored for their contributions to the industry. “Produce managers are the face of our industry to the consumer. Their creative merchandising and positive approach to customer service directly correlates to the growth of sales and ultimately consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables,” said United Fresh CEO Tom Stenzel. “We are grateful to Dole for once again sponsoring this program and for their partnership in recognizing these 25 deserving honorees.” John, who has been a staple with Tops Friendly Markets for over 26 years, began his career as a produce clerk. Since that time he has worn many hats including night crew clerk and meat clerk before being promoted to produce assistant manager in 1999. In 2002 John was then promoted to produce manager.

“John has been a very important part of this store’s success since it opened in 2014,” said Justin Rowe, store manager for the Henrietta Tops Friendly Market. “John’s ability to have fun at work while still running a top notch produce department makes him a great asset to the store, and a good friend to all of his co-workers. We are all very proud of John for receiving this award. I know that he gives his best every day and it’s great to see him being recognized for it.”

The winners of the 2017 United Fresh Retail Produce Manager Awards Program were selected from hundreds of nominations submitted by retailers and produce suppliers across the industry. Nominations were evaluated on several criteria, including efforts to increase produce consumption through excellence in merchandising, special displays and promotions, community service and commitment to customer satisfaction.

Tops Friendly Markets teams up with Redland Foods to produce segment of its Tops Brand line of products locally in Western New York

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y., 2017-Feb-09 — /EPR Retail News/ — Tops Friendly Markets, a leading full-service grocery retailer in New York, northern Pennsylvania, western Vermont, and north central Massachusetts recently teamed up with Redland Foods to produce a segment of its Tops Brand line of products right here in Western New York.

Redland, an affiliate of Trophy Foods Inc., expanded into the U.S. from Canada for the first time in 2014, having already created 20 new jobs for the community and investing over $2.5 million into Western New York, with plans for further growth in jobs and capital investment in 2017. This type of commitment to the community and the economic impact that they will have for years to come is just one of the many reasons why Tops decided to partner with them on this product line.

Having recently rebranded and reformulated thousands of items over the past two years, and added or reformulated hundreds of items with an emphasis on cleaner ingredients, Tops was seeking a company that offered flexibility as well as a manufacturer willing to work within its high standards of quality and transparency. Having the product made locally also guarantees the freshest and highest quality products possible for their customers and was something that was important to Tops when seeking a vendor.

“Whether it was producing smaller batches or helping us to develop a blend of flavors that no other national brand offers, Redland helped us to develop a program to meet our needs all within our guidelines,” said Nicky Walsh, director of business development for Daymon. Daymon, a private brand development group, works closely with Tops Markets to develop several of the Tops Brand products.

“Redland Foods is very proud to partner with Tops Markets on their new initiative to provide their customers with innovative healthy snacking nut products,” said Joseph Milando, vice president of sales. “We established very early on a great working relationship with the Tops team in developing and launching a wide assortment of snacking nut items meant to cater and indulge their customers on great tasting snacking nuts! We are extremely excited about our tremendous partnership with the leading full-service grocery retailer.”

“Working with local manufacturers is something Tops takes great pride in so when seeking a vendor to manufacturer its 18 varieties of snack nuts and trail mixes, Tops was pleased to find Redland conveniently located right in our backyard on Sonwil Drive in Cheektowaga, NY, said Frank Curci, chief executive officer and chairman for Tops Friendly Markets.

In the coming months Tops is looking forward to working with Redlands on additional opportunities to expand its snack line including one with a seasonal flare due to hit shelves this fall.

Tops Friendly Markets in Grand Island, N.Y. store manager named finalist for the 2016 Food Marketing Institute’s Store Manager of the Year

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y , 2016-Jul-02 — /EPR Retail News/ — Patty Bianco, store manager of Tops Friendly Markets in Grand Island, N.Y., has been named a finalist for the 2016 Food Marketing Institute’s (FMI) Store Manager of the Year.

Bianco is one of just ten finalists for the award among 85 nominations made this year. She is also one of three finalists for the award in her category of U.S.-based grocers with 50-199 stores.

After managers are nominated, they are scored by a panel at FMI based on their ability to generate sales growth, provide exceptional customer service and community relations, execute in-store innovation and demonstrate team leadership.

“Patty not only leads a successful store, but she places a high emphasis on the professional development of her team,” said John Persons, Tops’ president and chief operating officer. “In 2015 alone, ten associates were promoted to management positions and were recognized by the company for their performance. She is the definition of what a manager should be.”

Bianco, herself a native of Grand Island, has managed this store since 2006. She has been with Tops for 36 years, starting as a bakery clerk and then rising through the store management ranks.

FMI noted that her nomination stated, “Patty Bianco’s store is practically a pipeline for strong managers to other stores in her company.”

Aside from the day-to-day store management responsibilities, Bianco plays a key role in Tops’ internal training program. She has previously been recognized as the top trainer and people developer for the company.

Under Bianco’s leadership, the Grand Island store team is active in the local community. She and her team deliver groceries to two nursing homes on a regular basis, offer curbside service to customers with various needs and sponsor a sports league where special needs children can play baseball. In addition, the Tops in Grand Island sponsors the Grand Island Citizen of the Year Award, the annual Lion’s Club spaghetti dinner, Johnny Appleseed Day at local schools and a safe Post-Prom Night for high school students.

FMI will announce the winners of the award on this week during its annual FMI Connect event in Chicago. Winners will receive $1,000 and a crystal award.

Through programs in public affairs, food safety, research, education and industry relations, FMI offers resources and provides valuable benefits to more than 1,225 food retail and wholesale member companies in the United States and around the world. FMI’s U.S. members operate nearly 40,000 retail food stores and 25,000 pharmacies, representing a combined annual sales volume of almost $770 billion.
