New initiative expands access to high quality and convenient health care services for Veterans in Phoenix

PHOENIX, 2017-Apr-19 — /EPR Retail News/ — The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced today (April 18, 2017) a new initiative between the Phoenix VA Health Care System (PVAHCS), TriWest Healthcare Alliance, and MinuteClinic, the retail medical clinic of CVS Health (NYSE: CVS), that will expand access to high quality and convenient health care services for Veterans in Phoenix and surrounding communities. Through this initiative, Phoenix VA HCS nurses, when clinically appropriate, will now be able to refer Veterans to MinuteClinic through the Veterans Choice Program for the treatment of minor illnesses and injuries.

“Our number one priority is getting Veterans access to care when and where they need it. The launch of this partnership will enable VA to provide more care for Veterans in their neighborhoods,” said Dr. Baligh Yehia, the Deputy Undersecretary for Health for Community Care.

Dr. Yehia is leading the VA in its transformational journey to provide Veterans with easy access to personalized care from a robust network of federal and private providers. “Partnerships between VA and private providers are essential to delivering care in the diverse geographies where Veterans live,” he said.

This sentiment is echoed by TriWest, one of VA’s partners in administering the Veterans Choice Program. President and Chief Executive Officer of TriWest, David J. McIntyre, Jr. states, “TriWest values greatly the partnership with community providers who share our commitment to providing Veterans timely, high quality, and convenient health care.”

“This new public-private collaboration between CVS, TriWest and the VA is an important step forward in enhancing choice and flexibility in Veterans’ health care,” said Senator John McCain. “I’ve long believed that Veterans in need of routine health care services should not have to wait in line for weeks to get an appointment when they can visit community health centers like MinuteClinic to receive timely and convenient care. Thanks to the leadership of CVS Health and the VA, Phoenix’s nearly 120,000 Veterans will now be served at 24 different area MinuteClinic locations for minor health care services.”

This innovative program provides Veterans with more options and access points for receiving care for a wide array of minor illnesses and injuries. “We are thrilled to have this new partnership for Phoenix area Veterans. Increasing access and availability of care is crucial. In sending Veterans out into the community, however, we are always conscious of providing the best care coordination we can. We are working to leverage technology to share important clinical information and ensure care continuity,” said Dr. Maureen McCarthy, PVAHCS Chief of Staff.

To facilitate care coordination, the partnership will share electronic health information in the same manner that proved successful in a similar program launched in 2016 with the Palo Alto VA Health Care System. MinuteClinic visit summaries will be sent to a Veteran’s VA primary care physician. This ensures the VA physician has the clinical information necessary for follow-up services in the VA, if appropriate.

Veterans who call the Phoenix VA Health Care System Help Line at 602-222-6550 or 800-574-7174 (toll free) can be referred to one of the 24 MinuteClinic locations in the Phoenix area for treatment of common acute illnesses.

“We believe in the MinuteClinic model of care and are excited to offer our health care services as one potential solution for the Phoenix VA Health Care System and its patients with minor illnesses and injuries,” said CVS MinuteClinic Chief Medical Officer, Tobias Barker, M.D. “We’re looking forward to working with the Phoenix VA Health Care System team to ensure that their patients have additional options for high-quality acute care at times and locations that are convenient for them.”

More than 9,000 veterans already have entered 7‑Eleven’s Operation: Take Command; deadline on February 26

DALLAS, 2016-Feb-18 — /EPR Retail News/ — Thousands of veterans are charging ahead to enlist inOperation: Take Command, 7‑Eleven, Inc.’ssecond franchise giveaway contest targeted exclusively to U.S. military veterans.

With the Feb. 26 deadline for entries fast approaching, more than 9,000 veterans have entered, already exceeding last year’s total number of entrants.

The winner will receive a waiver of the franchise fee, valued at up to $190,000, to franchise any 7‑Eleven® convenience store available in the continental U.S. at the contest’s culmination. Interested veterans, who are first-time 7‑Eleven franchise applicants, can enter online at www.VeteransFranchiseGiveaway.com through Friday, Feb. 26, 2016. The winner will be announced in June.

“This is a great opportunity for a veteran to take charge of his or her future,” said Larry Hughes, 7‑Eleven vice president of Franchise Systems and himself a West Point graduate and U.S. Army veteran. “Veterans have a proven track record as 7‑Eleven franchisees. Leadership and character, systems orientation, discipline, the ability to build teams … the qualities that are stressed in the military are the same ones that lead to success in our system.”

In addition to their military experience, many of the veterans who have entered this year’s Operation: Take Command competition hold bachelor’s and graduate degrees and possess business, retail and management skills.

The Operation: Take Command franchise giveaway is a multi-phased competition that includes meeting 7‑Eleven’s franchising qualifications and successful interviews. The top 25 will be invited to submit a video on why they deserve a 7‑Eleven franchise. Up to seven will be selected for the semi-finals round, which includes a Facebook video contest. The three getting the most Facebook votes will be interviewed by 7‑Eleven’s franchise department and narrowed to one winner.

To qualify for the contest, an entrant must be age 21 or older, a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, an honorably discharged veteran, have excellent credit and at least three years of leadership, retail or restaurant experience. Contestants will go through the same qualification process as all 7‑Eleven franchise applicants including credit evaluation, a leadership test, business plan development, budget and location preferences.

7‑Eleven has been recognized by veterans’ organizations for its military-friendly business opportunities, hiring practices and philanthropic support for military families. Military veterans serve in every level of the company from store sales associates to headquarters personnel. The retailer also has supported military assistance organizations including Hire Heroes USA, the USO, Reserve Aid, Warrior Gateway and Operation Mend.

“Response to this year’s Operation: Take Command has already surpassed last year, I think in part because veterans recognize what a great opportunity owning a 7‑Eleven franchise can be and that 7‑Eleven is a military-friendly company on all fronts,” Hughes said. “Five of the top 10 finalists in last year’s contest are now 7‑Eleven franchisees.”

7‑Eleven was selected a 2014-2015 “Best for Vets” franchise by Military Times, a Top 100 Military-Friendly Employer by G.I. Kroger Family of Stores Hiring 20,000 Employees Nationwide

CINCINNATI, OH, 2015-8-25— /EPR Retail News/ — The Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR) family of stores today announced it will hold open interviews nationwide on Tues., Sept. 15, for all veterans and their family members.  Nationwide, the company is hiring to fill an estimated 20,000 permanent positions in its supermarket divisions.

Veterans and their family members need only to fill out on application online at jobs.kroger.com by Sept. 13, and then return to a store on Sept. 15, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. (no appointment necessary).

Kroger hired more than 6,000 veterans in 2014, and has hired more than 29,000 veterans since 2009 as part of its commitment to active duty troops and the nation’s 23 million veterans through “Honoring Our Heroes,” a multi-faceted program the company designed to show its deep gratitude.

In addition, Kroger is proud to have helped the “100,000 Jobs Mission” surpass its original goal in January 2014, seven years early. The “100,000 Jobs Mission” is a coalition of more than 130 companies with the common goal of hiring more than 100,000 transitioning service members and military veterans by 2020.

“Kroger is deeply committed to the nation’s veterans and their families, and we continue to seek out opportunities to honor heroes through career opportunities,” said Tim Massa, Kroger’s group vice president of human resources and labor relations. “Kroger is a place where you can come for a job and stay for a career,” he said, noting that about 70 percent of Kroger’s store managers started as part-time clerks.

“Kroger is a company that veterans can be proud to work for because of its robust involvement in our local communities,” said Clifton Thomas, Kroger’s category strategy manager for Corporate Brands and Marine Corps Veteran. “It has given me the opportunity to be part of a team and connect to something bigger.”

The online application requests an email address, employment history and education information and takes about 30 minutes to complete.

Through the Honoring Our Heroes program, Kroger stores have raised more than $11.9 million since 2010 to help support USO programs, which represents the largest cumulative gift to the USO in its nearly 75-year history.

Kroger, one of the world’s largest retailers, employs nearly 400,000 associates who serve customers in 2,626 supermarkets and multi-department stores in 34 states and the District of Columbia under two dozen local banner names including Kroger, City Market, Dillons, Food 4 Less, Fred Meyer, Fry’s, Harris Teeter, Jay C, King Soopers, QFC, Ralphs and Smith’s.  The company also operates 780 convenience stores, 327 fine jewelry stores, 1,342 supermarket fuel centers and 37 food processing plants in the U.S.  Recognized by Forbes as the most generous company in America, Kroger supports hunger relief, breast cancer awareness, the military and their families, and more than 30,000 schools and community organizations. Starbucks committed to hire 10,000 veterans and military spouses by the year 2018

SEATTLE, 2015-7-2 — /EPR Retail News/ — On a rainy Seattle afternoon this past April, members of Starbucks Armed Forces Network (AFN) didn’t let the weather stop them from volunteering at an urban farm. They planted, mulched and got covered in mud — all to help grow fruits and vegetables for local homeless veterans. They have returned to work at the farm each month since.

The AFN was founded in 2007 to bring partners who served in the military together to bond over their shared experiences, to provide guidance for newly hired partners transitioning from military to civilian life and to create a veteran-friendly workforce. A small group of AFN members were also instrumental in helping the company launch its commitment to hire 10,000 veterans and military spouses by the year 2018.

Richard Chambers, a veteran who served in the U.S. Air Force for 23 years, is the current vice-chair of the AFN chapter in Seattle. Over the past year, Chambers has witnessed a surge in the number of field chapters established across the U.S.

“After Starbucks announced its military hiring commitment, visibility to the AFN picked up,” said Chambers. “Partners around the country who are passionate about veterans began to inquire about starting chapters in their cities.”

As a result of the new field chapters, Starbucks has provided additional resources for new and existing partners who are veterans and military spouses, built deeper relationships with military bases across the country and increased participation in volunteer activities. The work of the AFN is vital to Starbucks as it continues to hire and support those who have served in the Armed Forces and their families.

Today, there are six Starbucks Armed Forces Network field chapters with seven others currently in development.

“We create goals and strategies for the year and share them with the field chapters,” said Chambers. “They can use them, modify them or come up with their own. We encourage them to make strategic decisions based on the needs in their cities or regions. We are here for guidance should they need it.”

Taking the Lead

In June 2014, Frank Adams, a Starbucks partner resources manager in Massachusetts, established the first AFN field chapter in the Northeast region of the country.

“I was inspired by our commitment to hire veterans and military spouses,” said Adams, who is an Army veteran. “I started thinking about what we could do locally to help with the effort.”

Adams hosted conference calls with partners in his region to discuss veterans-related causes and coordinated community service events. Shortly thereafter, he recruited partners to join a board and increased membership for the Northeast chapter.

One of the main goals in the region is to amplify Starbucks Roll Call, a website where partners can voluntarily identify themselves as veterans, reservists or military spouses.

“Our board members are committed to reaching out to every local partner who signs up on our Roll Call,” said Adams. “We are also developing a welcome kit for them to share resources and activities with a military focus.”

After building the Northeast AFN chapter, Adams shared his experience with the team in Seattle to help create tools for subsequent field chapters. He has also provided direct guidance to new AFN leaders.

“Being an early adopter, I work with new chapters as they spring up,” he said.

A Passion for Service and for Those who Serve

Patricia Revollo is a district manager in San Antonio, Texas benefitting from Adams’ expertise. She is developing an AFN field chapter for the South Central region, which will include several cities in Texas and Oklahoma. While Revollo does not have a military background, she has embraced service members for their work and sacrifice.

“For me it’s personal,” said Revollo. “I was born in Costa Rica, but became a U.S. citizen in 1988. On that day, I not only took an oath, I also made a vow to always thank military personnel for their service.”

San Antonio has a major military presence with four bases located there. Revollo and her team of store partners have been actively involved with the local military community over the past eight years. They conduct monthly coffee tastings at the Center for the Intrepid, and have teamed up with the Texas Veterans Commission at job fairs to share what opportunities are available for veterans at Starbucks.

“Community service is my personal passion, especially when it relates to military personnel and their families,” said Revollo. “Texas and Oklahoma have a strong military presence, so it’s only fitting that the South Central region has their own AFN chapter. We have big plans.”

As additional field chapters come to life, Starbucks will continue enhancing its commitment to veterans and their families.

“When this all started, we wanted to have a safe place for veterans to go to ask questions,” Chambers said. “I’m so proud of how the AFN has evolved into a true support system for military partners in our stores and offices across the country as well.”
