Wegmans encourages customers to properly recycle plastic bags in honor of America Recycles Day

Rochester, N.Y., 2017-Nov-17 — /EPR Retail News/ — In honor of America Recycles Day, Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. is encouraging customers to properly recycle plastic bags to prevent them from polluting our waterways, getting tangled in trees and bushes, or ending up in a landfill.

There’s no denying plastic bags are useful, convenient and offer benefits for consumers and retailers alike. While more environmentally friendly than their paper counterparts, the biggest problem with plastic bags is improper disposal.

A recent survey conducted by Wegmans showed many consumers are unfamiliar with the proper way to recycle plastic bags. According to the survey, 13 percent of respondents are currently placing plastic bags in curbside recycling bins, and 45 percent were unaware that plastic bags need to be returned to a retailer or collection facility to be properly recycled.

Don’t “Curb” Your Plastic Bags
You might think all recyclable material can go in your curbside bin, but most recycling centers across the country do not accept plastic bags or other plastic wraps and films. The reason – recycling centers use high-speed mechanized sorting lines to separate paper and plastic efficiently. Plastic bags and films get caught in the machinery, causing slowdowns, and at times, bringing the entire system to a halt. For that reason, the bags and plastic films end up in landfills.

Recycle Plastic at Wegmans
Wegmans has offered plastic recycling receptacles at its stores since 1994. Customers can use these receptacles for recycling clean, dry, flexible plastic (#2 and #4), including all retailers’ plastic shopping bags, bread bags, plastic outer wraps, produce bags, and cereal box liners, to name a few. Wegmans uses the collected plastic to make new bags made from 40 percent post-consumer recycled material.

Plastic Bag Alternatives
“We know from experience we can reduce the use of single-use plastic bags by promoting reusable bags,” said Jason Wadsworth, manager of sustainability for Wegmans. “If each customer used just one reusable bag on each shopping trip, Wegmans would use 330 million fewer plastic bags each year.”

“We also know people forget their bags, or make unplanned stops at the grocery store,” continued Wadsworth. “That’s why it’s important to educate customers on the next-best option and the importance of reusing or properly recycling their plastic bags.”

Almost half of the plastic bags and film by weight used by Wegmans customers are returned for recycling. In honor of America Recycles Day, join the effort to keep that rate growing, and take small steps all year long to reduce, reuse, and recycle.

Wegmans: First Source recalls Honey Roast Nut Crunch that contains undeclared almond

TonawandaNY, 2017-Oct-23 — /EPR Retail News/ — First Source of Tonawanda, NY, is voluntarily recalling Honey Roast Nut Crunch because it contains undeclared almond. People who have an allergy or sensitivity to tree nuts (almonds) run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product.

The recalled item was distributed to 30 Wegmans Food Markets in the states of MA, MD, NJ, NY, PA, and VA, and sold by the pound in the bulk foods department. The affected product was sold from October 9, 2017 to October 19, 2017. No illnesses or allergic reactions have been reported to date. Wegmans will place automated phone calls to customers who purchased the product using their Shoppers Club card.

The recall was initiated after First Source discovered that almonds were mistakenly added to the mix in place of peanuts. Subsequent investigation indicated the problem was caused by an error during the mixing of the product and a temporary breakdown in First Source’s allergen control process.

Consumers who have purchased this item may return it to the Wegmans customer service desk for a refund. Consumers with questions may contact Wegmans Consumer Affairs at 1-855-934-3663, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Wegmans raised $1,089,769 during its winter 2017 hunger relief scanning campaigns

NEW YORK, 2017-Apr-27 — /EPR Retail News/ — During the winter 2017 checkout scanning campaign at 27 Wegmans stores in Massachusetts, Buffalo and the Southern Tier of New York, and parts of Pennsylvania, hunger relief donations hit $1,089,769. Check Out Hunger allows customers to donate $2 $3, $5 or any other amount at checkout with 100% of the proceeds going to each store’s local food bank.

“We’ve been running hunger relief scanning campaigns for 24 years, but we continue to be amazed by, and appreciative of, the selfless giving our customers and employees continue to demonstrate each year,” said Wegmans Community Relations Manager Linda Lovejoy. “Their donations at checkout help reduce hunger that exists right in our own neighborhoods and communities.”

The food banks that will receive donations are listed below with the amount raised, and in parentheses, the Wegmans stores that raised money for them:

Massachusetts

·         Greater Boston Food Bank – $77,447 (Burlington, Chestnut Hill and Westwood)

·         Worcester County Food Bank – $36,105 (Northborough)

New York

·         Food Bank of the Southern Tier – $243,682 (five stores in the Southern Tier region)

·         Food Bank of Western New York – $579,887 (11 stores in the Buffalo region)

Pennsylvania

·         Central Pennsylvania Food Bank – $22,680 (Harrisburg and Williamsport)

·         Food Bank of the State College Area – $13,681 (State College)

·         Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest Pennsylvania – $84,169 (Erie Peach St. and Erie West)

·         The Weinberg Northeast Regional Food Bank – $32,118 (Dickson City and Wilkes Barre)

The winter campaign ran at various dates from January to March. Timing of the annual checkout scanning campaigns varies by region. The remaining Wegmans stores in Maryland, New Jersey, the Greater Rochester region of New York, Eastern Pennsylvania, and Northern Virginia run annual checkout campaigns during the fall season. Wegmans stores in Richmond and Charlottesville, Va. are running their first-ever Check Out Hunger campaign now through May 6, and stores in the Greater Syracuse region of New York are also in the middle of their spring campaign.

Hunger relief scanning campaigns raised a total of $2.9 million at Wegmans in 2016. Since these programs began in 1993, Wegmans has raised more than $33 million for hunger relief.

In addition to money raised for emergency food services in 2016, Wegmans also donated 14.5 million pounds of food to local food banks, food pantries, and soup kitchens across all its market areas.

Packaging Innovation Part of Wegman’s commitment to Sustainability

Packaging Innovation Part of Wegman’s commitment to Sustainability

Rochester, NEW YORK, 2017-Apr-17 — /EPR Retail News/ — With 92 stores across six states, each offering a minimum of 50,000 products, Wegmans Food Markets customers might not immediately equate the notion of “less is more” with Wegmans. But, when it comes to sustainability and the company’s commitment to reduce waste in landfills and reduce emissions, less truly is more. Packaging innovation is just one example of how the company is delivering on that commitment.

“It’s always important to remember that a food container’s number one job is to protect the food inside. It takes resources to grow that food, and fuel to bring it from the farm to the store, so we want to preserve nature’s investment in this food with containers that protect it all the way to your table,” said Jason Wadsworth, manager of sustainability for Wegmans. “Our job is to make sure packaging is functional, performs as expected, and uses materials efficiently and responsibly. That leaves plenty of opportunity for exploring ways to make packaging more sustainable.”

To improve the sustainability of its packaging, Wegmans is focused on reducing the amount of virgin materials – new plastic or paper made from non-renewable fossil fuels – and replacing it with mineral fillers, and renewable and recycled materials. Wegmans is also committed to avoiding excess packaging, and removing Bisphenol A (BPA) and other potentially harmful materials, such as Polystyrene and PVC where possible and where alternatives exist.

“As often happens with sustainability initiatives, the changes we’re implementing and the progress we’re making aren’t always easy to see,” explained Wadsworth. “For some of the sustainable packages we’ve introduced, the change has been very apparent to customers, while for others, they’d never know unless we told them.”

Wondering where you can find these sustainable packaging solutions at Wegmans? The short answer is, throughout the store.

Packaging innovations using less plastic:

  • Wegmans recently introduced a new produce bag made from 100 percent plant-based renewable materials, not fossil fuels. During the manufacturing process, the use of plant-based materials means less CO2 is emitted, and unlike other renewable plastics, the new produce bags can be recycled in the same way as traditional plastic bags, by placing them in the plastic recycling depositories located in the vestibules of each Wegmans.
  • Wegmans Organic Beef vacuum-sealed packaging is currently made from 50% plant-based renewable material, not fossil fuels and will be going to 70% plant-based this year.
  • By switching to a bag from the plastic domes, each rotisserie chicken pouch uses 75 percent less plastic. In addition to being better for the environment, the bags offer an easy-carry handle, re-sealable zipper, and are leak resistant, microwave safe, and easy to store.
  • In the Market Café, the self-serve food bar containers use 40 percent less plastic, as do the Choose Your Meal and pre-packaged Asian bowl containers in Prepared Foods.

Packaging innovations using recycled content:

  • Wegmans’ front-end plastic bags contain 40 percent post-consumer recycled content, all of which is generated by customers returning their plastic bags to the store. In 2016, Wegmans’ recycling rate for plastic bags averaged around 50 percent.
  • Various plastic trays and containers are made from recycled plastic, such as our fresh-cut veggie trays, made from 50 percent recycled plastic material.
  • The paper “boats” used for product samples and the donut and cake boxes contain 100 percent recycled content.

Since 2015, Wegmans has saved over 6 million pounds of virgin plastic resin by using mineral fillers, renewable materials, and adding recycled material into its packaging. This combined plastic savings equates to 150 truckloads worth of packaging the company didn’t use.

When evaluating opportunities for improved packaging, Wegmans also looks for ways to shrink the carbon footprint involved in bringing food to customers. That’s why last fall, Wegmans converted its Food You Feel Good About Pasta Sauce from a glass jar to a lighter weight #1 PET plastic. Because the weight of an item plays a role in how many trucks are needed for shipment, Wegmans saw an opportunity to reduce the impact of transportation on the environment if the packaging of a high-volume item like pasta sauce could be made lighter, without sacrificing quality or safety.

“By switching from glass to PET jars,” said Wadsworth, “the same amount of pasta sauce can be shipped each year using 55 fewer trucks. That change can save 974 gallons of diesel fuel, cutting carbon dioxide emissions – the equivalent of driving around the Earth once in an average passenger vehicle.”

Although the glass jars were recyclable, PET plastic jars are more widely recycled, and are much less likely to break if dropped, minimizing food waste, another key reason Wegmans continues to look for ways to innovate in packaging.

Wegmans sees plenty of opportunity to continue reducing its reliance on virgin plastic and paper, not just for packaging, but in other areas of the store as well. In the Market Café, the plastic utensils are now made of 30 percent plant-based materials and are dispensed one at a time for a 30 percent reduction in waste, while the napkins are made with 100 percent recycled content. In its new stores, Wegmans is reducing the number of paper towels being used by introducing hand dryers in its restrooms.

“We’re very happy with the progress we’ve made over the last couple years, and we plan to keep the momentum going,” commented Wadsworth. “Our 2017 goal is to reduce another half million pounds of packaging material by focusing on recycled content and renewable materials.”

Wegmans offer employer on-site flu clinics to provide flu shots to employees

ROCHESTER, N.Y., 2016-Aug-19 — /EPR Retail News/ — With fall right around the corner, employers may see an increase in absenteeism as employees battle illness this flu season. According to Flu.gov, nearly 111 million workdays are lost due to the flu, equating to approximately $7 billion per year in sick days and lost productivity. While it’s impossible to eradicate the flu from the workplace, the Wegmans Pharmacy Business Partnership Program can help employers minimize the impact of seasonal flu on their workforce with its employer on-site flu clinics.

Wegmans makes it easy for employers to host an on-site flu clinic with simple online scheduling for employees to sign up for a flu shot timeslot, and the ability to bill individual plan sponsors or billing direct to employers. The employer on-site flu clinics are offered throughout all of Wegmans’ market areas, and provide flu shots to employees 18 years and older.

“Protecting our employees from the flu is important to us,” said Mike Stojkovic, Director of Wellness at the Rochester Institute of Technology. “The Wegmans Pharmacy team provides convenient, friendly service ensuring our employees get the care they need.”

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an annual flu vaccine is the best way for individuals to protect themselves from seasonal flu. Yet, three out of every five people in the United States report not being vaccinated.

“Employers can help boost vaccination rates among their workforce by offering an on-site flu clinic, which gives employees easy access to the flu shot at little to no cost, and without leaving the office,” said Brian Pompo, Wegmans Pharmacy Business Relations Manager. “Even if an on-site flu clinic doesn’t make sense for an organization, employers play an important role in educating their employees on the importance of an annual flu shot and the resources available to them in their community.”

The flu vaccination for the 2016-2017 season is also available at all Wegmans Pharmacy locations. Customers can stop by the store pharmacy during normal business hours; no need for a prescription or appointment, and in most cases, the fee is covered by insurance in full.

“Millions of Americans come down with the flu every year, and by offering the employer on-site flu clinics and the flu vaccination in our pharmacies, we’re making it easy for those in our community to protect themselves from seasonal flu,” said Pompo

For more information about the Wegmans Pharmacy Business Partnership Program, contact Brian Pompo, Wegmans Pharmacy Business Relations Manager, at Brian.Pompo@wegmans.com.

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History opens “Wegmans Wonderplace”

WASHINGTON, DC, 2015-12-10 — /EPR Retail News/ — The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History today opens “Wegmans Wonderplace,” the first gallery on the National Mall designed for the learning needs of children from infancy to age six.

Opening festivities include a children’s parade through the building led by members of the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra and a paper chain ribbon-cutting with Smithsonian Secretary Skorton. Special activities Dec. 9 between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. include a meet and greet with “Walkaround Elmo” from Sesame Street, music and dancing with Coach, Williebob, and Boogie Bennie of the ever popular band Rocknoceros, cooking demonstrations for kids and adults, face painting, balloon art, giveaways and more.

Made possible by a $1.5 million gift and in-kind donations from Wegmans Food Markets, this gallery will allow curious kids to “cook” in a kitchen inspired by Julia Child’s; plant and harvest pretend vegetables and run the farm stand; find the owls hiding in a miniature replica of the Smithsonian’s Castle building; and captain a tugboat based on a model in the museum’s collection.

“Wonderplace,” a 1,700-square-foot children’s center, will provide the youngest historians with age-appropriate activities and experiences over the next 20 years. The early learning gallery completes the museum’s 45,000-square-foot Innovation Wing, which features 12 exhibitions, learning spaces and program places all centered on the themes of invention, creativity and business.

“We know that play is an integral part of sparking invention and innovation, and ‘Wegmans Wonderplace’ will ignite that innate curiosity in children and help guide them on a path to lifetime learning at the Smithsonian,” said John Gray, director of the museum.

Wegmans is also supporting the museum’s new demonstration kitchen in the Wallace H. Coulter Performance Plaza. Part of the museum’s Food History Project, the kitchen hosts a diverse menu of programs and demonstrations that bring visitors together for relevant discussions that start with history and expand to the present and future of American food.

“Wegmans’ mission is to help our customers live healthier, better lives, and that begins with children,” said Wegmans CEO Danny Wegman. “Having fun through play is the best way to inspire children to learn.” According to the company, the opening of ‘Wegmans Wonderplace’ at the end of this year will also help to usher in Wegmans’ 100th Anniversary in 2016.

“Wegmans Wonderplace” will feature six sections each with hands-on, play-based interdisciplinary activities. The sections include: the Farm, the Kitchen, the Port, the Construction Site, the Gallery and the Smithsonian Castle. Each area combines artifact displays with fun hands-on activities to engage young children and their families. Activities such as the 12 different kinds of blocks in the Construction Site will help promote creativity and advance motor skills.

More than 100 objects will be displayed around “Wonderplace” to stimulate early learners’ interest in museums and American history. These artifacts from the museum’s collections will be presented in fun ways to get families excited about what they are seeing. In the Castle section, children will get to look at objects from all angles as they climb around—and even under—them. In the Farm section, kids will “find the animals” among the weathervanes, milk bottles, farm toys and lunch boxes.

So that every age group can get the most out of “Wonderplace,” signs will guide parents and caregivers on how to help their children engage in the activities. The center will also contain family-friendly amenities to create a more comfortable environment for visitors. These amenities include family bathrooms with diaper-changing stations, parking areas for strollers and a quiet nook in the rear of the space where parents can feed and take care of infants.

Through incomparable collections, rigorous research and dynamic public outreach, the National Museum of American History explores the infinite richness and complexity of American history. We help people understand the past in order to make sense of the present and shape a more humane future. For more information, visit http://americanhistory.si.edu. The museum is located on Constitution Avenue, between 12th and 14th Streets N.W., and is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (closed Dec. 25). Admission is free. For Smithsonian information, the public may call (202) 633-1000.

Wegmans to open its fourth store in Massachusetts on October 11

WESTWOOD, MA, 2015-10-6 — /EPR Retail News/ — Ever think food shopping could be fun? Inspire you to try something new? Then stand by:  The fourth Wegmans store in Massachusetts, at 169 University Avenue (near I 95) in Westwood, is opening its doors to the public at 7 a.m. this Sunday, October 11.  That’s when 550 friendly, helpful employees will show you how the store helps you make great meals every day that are easy, healthy and affordable.

A family-owned company since its start in 1916, Wegmans and its mission have consistently stayed the same: to offer choice, quality and value and to be the very best at serving the needs of its customers.

No matter what your style of cooking, Wegmans has everything you need under one roof: Restaurant-quality prepared foods; best-quality ingredients for cooking from scratch; ready-to-cook entrees; deli meats for tomorrow’s lunch; specialty and artisan cheeses for entertaining, or fresh New England seafood. With 70,000 products, Wegmans has about twice the selection of most other supermarkets.

There’s good news on Wegmans’ prices, too: Prices for products families buy every week are lower than at other supermarkets, with many products available in both regular and Family Pack size for the best value.

When you love working with food and people, Wegmans is the place to be according to Westwood Store Manager Dave Orlovsky, who has been with the company for more than 25 years.

“It’s always exciting to watch customers walk into the store for the first time and see all we have to offer,” says Orlovsky. “Our team has been working for months in anticipation of opening day, and we’re ready to deliver on our promise of incredible customer service.”

Shoppers will first see the vibrant colors of the produce department as they enter the 122,000-square-foot store. Just beyond are other fresh food areas with an open-air market feel, like bakery, meat, seafood, and cheese. See something in Prepared Foods that you can hardly wait to eat? Buy it and enjoy it right away at the Market Café, with indoor and outdoor seating for nearly 300 people.

Wegmans Wine and Beer shop has more than 700 varieties of domestic and imported beer with ‘Craft Your Own’ six-packs, wines starting at $6, and weekly wine tastings to help customers find perfect pairings for their meals.

The Westwood store also includes a pharmacy. J.D. Power and Associates 2015 Pharmacy Study recently ranked Wegmans pharmacy “Highest in Customer Satisfaction Among Supermarket Pharmacies” nationwide.

On opening day, just before customers are welcomed in, employees will gather near the front of the store to do the Wegmans cheer at 6:55 a.m., a long-standing tradition for the family-owned company. The store will be open seven days a week, and regular hours of operation will be 6 a.m. to midnight.

Customers can visit www.wegmans.com/westwood for more store details and to sign up for a Wegmans Shoppers Club card. They can also download the Wegmans app to search for recipes, products and create a shopping list that can be sorted by aisle locations.

Wegmans will help customers identify gluten or food allergens in candy during Halloween

ROCHESTER, NY, 2015-9-23 — /EPR Retail News/ — Life is sweet. Now shopping for Halloween candy this fall just got sweeter at Wegmans Food Markets, which is helping customers who may be avoiding gluten or food allergens. The seasonal candy aisle is adorned with a prominent sign, directing shoppers to an online chart of information about gluten and major allergens such as peanuts, tree nuts, egg, dairy, and soy found in common Halloween treats. The chart is available at wegmans.com/halloweenallergens, and can also be printed out at any Wegmans service desk.

Halloween treats on the chart are listed by item description and UPC number. A “no” in the allergen box means that the item does NOT contain that allergen. For example, fun-size Starburst candies do not contain gluten/wheat, peanuts, or tree nuts, but they may contain egg, dairy, and soy.

“Last Halloween, many of our customers asked for help choosing safe treats for children with food allergies. We listened closely to that need and wanted to provide clear, accurate information this season,” said Wegmans Category Merchant Jennifer Komendat, who oversees candy. “More than six months ago, we began reaching out to our Halloween candy suppliers, asking if they’d like to participate by verifying allergen statements and carefully checking ingredient lists so that we could gather the information into one simple reference chart.”

Halloween candy is the target of this initiative because, according to Wegmans Corporate Nutrition and Product Labeling Manager Jane Andrews, MS, RDN, parents are used to reading labels for foods they purchase for their own families every week, but when it comes to something they buy for someone else or buy only occasionally, such as for a holiday, they have questions.

“If you or someone in your family has food allergies, you have a game plan, but if you’re buying treats for someone else’s child who may have a food allergy, you’ll be shopping for something you don’t typically buy, and that can be tricky,” Andrews says. “Easy access to this information online and in the store can be a relief to the customer who may be looking for candy that’s peanut-free or dairy-free to bring into a classroom, a party, or to hand out to trick-or-treaters.”

The chart features more than 30 traditional Halloween candies like Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Tootsie Rolls, Dots, and Junior Mints. Most items are available while supplies last and selection may vary by store. However, Wegmans also included information for several products that have year-round availability in the fruit snack aisle, such as Wegmans Fruit Strips and Fruit Twists.

“We are excited to provide this information to our customers and hope our efforts make it easier for parents to navigate the options so everyone can enjoy a safe, sweet Halloween,” Komendat says.

Not a product recall: Wegmans Cleaned and Cut Kale tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes

ROCHESTER, NY, 2015-9-21 — /EPR Retail News/ — On September 14, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) notified Wegmans that a random sample of Wegmans Cleaned and Cut Kale, 16 oz. bag (UPC# 77890 26045) was taken from one store on August 3 and tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes.

This product is also used as an ingredient in a variety of recipes offered on Wegmans hot and cold bars and other prepared foods.

This is not a product recall, because the best-by date on this product was August 10, and it is no longer in stores and should no longer be in customers’ homes. However, out of an abundance of caution, Wegmans is taking the unusual step of announcing these test results.

“We want customers who may have consumed this product, or who consumed prepared foods that contained kale, between July 30 and August 12, to know about this on the chance they have experienced or may experience symptoms for listeriosis,”  says Jo Natale, vice president of media relations. “Knowing this, they can reach out to their doctor for advice or treatment if necessary. “

The incubation period for listeriosis can range from three to 70 days, but symptoms usually appear within a month.

No illnesses associated with this product have been reported to Wegmans or its supplier.

L. monocytogenes is a bacterium that can contaminate foods and cause a mild non-invasive illness (called listerial gastroenteritis) or a severe, sometimes life-threatening, illness (called invasive listeriosis). Persons who have the greatest risk of experiencing listeriosis after consuming foods contaminated with L. monocytogenes are fetuses and neonates who are infected after the mother is exposed to L. monocytogenes during pregnancy, the elderly, and persons with weakened immune systems. Customers who have experienced these symptoms should contact their physician.

To hear a complete list of affected products and prepared food items, consumers should call 1-877-273-6375.

If there are additional questions, customers should contact Wegmans consumer affairs department toll free at 1-855-934-3663 Monday through Friday, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Eastern time.
