Best Buy and Geek Squad Share Digital Learning at Digital Learning Day in Washington D.C.

Washington, DC, US, 2014-2-6 — /EPR Retail News/ — The intersection of educational and entertaining was struck perfectly with the interactive Stencyl videogame program Wednesday in Washington D.C., said Geek Squad Agent Tavis Sellers.

The hundreds of teachers and policymakers at the expo couldn’t help but gravitate toward the Best Buy and Geek Squad booth at Digital Learning Day at the Library of Congress. The event focuses on giving every child the opportunity to learn in a digital environment every day, with the goal of collegiate and career success.

Sellers and Best Buy associate Kelsi Facsina showcased exactly what the free online game — revolving around teaching programming –  can do for educators when they return to their respective classrooms all over the country.

“It was a big hit — we had it on the TV screen and everyone wants ahold of this program,” Sellers said. “I love the technology and I love sharing it even more. When I can help show them how it helps them in their everyday life, I am so game.”

Best Buy and Geek Squad were one of many companies present to show what online learning can do for the nation’s next generation.

What’s the game that had the expo all abuzz?

Stencyl is a program with a background scene mirroring Mario where students can take the pilot seat and easily create their unique gaming experience with the simple click of the mouse.

“You are a gopher in the game, and as a user you’re creating everything from scratch as far as programming,” Sellers said. “You create the background, the landscape, you add in characters, put the dog where you want, and space the jumps the way you want. It’s a software program, but it’s user friendly.”

FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler said Wednesday that his goal is to connect 99 percent of U.S. students to digital learning through high-speed Internet at every school and library.

And with increased online capabilities, that’s where Best Buy and Geek Squad came in as Sellers and Facsina also shared innovative Geek Squad Academy online coursework and ideas on the Digital Learning Day Teen ToolKit.

“We’re offering educators free curriculum that uses free software on the Internet,” said Best Buy Senior Manager of Community Relations Andrea Wood. “It’s exciting to be part of a moment that recognizes how important digital learning is for kids to be prepared for 21st century careers. We are so pleased with how today went.”

Intershop Communications named one of Germany’s best employers according news magazine Focus

Jena, Germany, 2014-2-6 — /EPR Retail News/ — Intershop Communications AG, the leading independent technology provider for omni-channel commerce solutions, ranks among Germany’s best employers. This was one of the findings of a study by the news magazine Focus in cooperation with Xing, the leading professional network in the German-speaking countries, andkununu, the largest German-language employer rating portal. In a comparison of employers in the telecommunications and IT sector, Intershop ranked sixth, while in the IT industry alone it made fourth place, leaving its direct competitors far behind.

“Working at Intershop is a challenge – and it’s fun, too,” says Jochen Moll, CEO of Intershop Communications AG of the company’s fantastic results. “We cultivate an ‘Intershop spirit’, which represents a very special form of cooperation, in our daily work. This spirit plays an important role in our ongoing commitment to customer service, top expertise, and unmatched innovation. The fact that this commitment has been recognized by the outside world just goes to show how consistently we honor it and maintain our focus on our employees’ concerns.”

Employees rank employers, staff members their bosses: In the largest-scale German survey of its kind,Focus collaborated with Xing and kununu to identify the 800 best employers with workforces of more than 500 employees across a total of 22 sectors. What makes this representative survey, which was conducted by Statista, so special is that it is based on both ratings entered by 19,700 employees from all levels and age groups and 23,200 ratings by employers on kununu. Respondents indicated how satisfied they are with the management behavior of their superiors, their career prospects, their salaries, and the image of their employer, among other things. The survey also asked how willing the respondents would be to recommend their own and other employers in the same sector.

“Focus examines what makes employees so happy that they turn in top performances and names the 800 companies with the best working conditions,” says Jörg Quoos, Editor-in-Chief of Focus. “Only companies with employees willing to recommend them to their friends and family earn the ‘Best Employer of 2014’ distinction.”

All results of the employee survey can be found in the Focus-Spezial issue “Germany’s Best Employers” (published January 28, 2014).
