Spain, 2016-Dec-05 — /EPR Retail News/ — On December 1st, Carrefour Spain held its first Sustainable Fishery Forum with the aim of boosting measures to preserve the biodiversity and sustainability of fishery products. The event took place in the auditorium of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fishery, Food and Environment.
Carrefour Spain organized this meeting with the aim of sharing with all members of the fishery and aquaculture chain its vision for the future of the sector, as well as to convey the aspects of the company’s policy of corporate social responsibility on this issue.
Representatives from the General Fishery Secretariat of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fishery, Food and Environment, organizations like OCEANIA, the Spanish Institute of Oceanography, AECOC and CECU and other companies in the sector such as Pescanova, Puerto Celeiro, OPP No. 60 Marina Alta and CEPESCA.
The following attended on behalf of Carrefour: Arturo Molinero, Human Resources and External Relations Director; María Quintín, Corporate Social Responsibility and Environment Director; and Mariano Rodríguez, Quality and Sustainable Development Director. During the meeting work groups were held to seek solutions under the title “How to inform consumers about the sustainability of fishery products” and the so-called “Actions in the three axes of sustainability”.
Responsible fishing
Because of its diversity and quantity, the fisheries sector constitutes a major challenge in terms of sustainability, and Carrefour therefore works on requirements such as traceability, selection of fishing grounds, respect for minimum sizes and promotion of local fisheries.
In 2007 Carrefour signed a collaboration agreement with FROM, and since 2008 it has carried out audits both on the reception platform and its suppliers. Agreements for the protection of traditional fishing such as bream and sea bass, and participation in the “Pesca de ría” programme of the Xunta de Galicia, underpin the company’s commitment.
In collaboration with all the social and economic agents, and together with its customers, Carrefour works on managing the quality and safety of its products and processes while respecting the environment. The group has a firm commitment to sustainable development. As a result of that commitment, in 2001 it joined the United Nations Global Compact and compliance with its environmental and social principles forms part of its action and culture.
