Foodstuffs North Island to develop one of New Zealand’s largest office and distribution centres at The Landing Business Park, Auckland Airport

  • Designed for our future and to deliver great value for customers at PAK’nSAVE, New World, Four Square, Gilmours, Liquorland and Fresh Collective
  • Construction starts in 2018 with completion scheduled for late 2020, as next stage of Foodstuffs’ nearly 100-year commitment to New Zealand

AUCKLAND, New Zealand, 2018-Feb-08 — /EPR Retail News/ — Foodstuffs North Island has announced that it is moving its primary Distribution Centre (DC) and Support Office from its long term home in Roma Road in Mount Roskill and building an exciting and innovative complex at The Landing, Auckland Airport.

Chief Executive Chris Quin, says Foodstuffs North Island has been at its current site for 53 years and is rapidly outgrowing that space.

“We’ve been an important part of New Zealanders’ lives and communities for nearly 100 years and we plan on being around for many years to come. To do this we need better facilities to deliver what our customers at PAK’nSAVE, New World, Four Square, Gilmours and Liquorland and Fresh Collective need from us for the future. We’re planning significant future growth across the business and our success depends on being nimble, efficient and continuing to attract the best talent, who work in an agile and collaborative way.”

Foodstuffs has made some big changes over the past few years, guided by its purpose of making sure New Zealanders get more out of life. Foodstuffs’ supermarket customers, along with Gilmours and Liquorland, have seen major changes including the introduction of New World Clubcard, online shopping, support for Kiwi children in partnership with Eat My Lunch and new and improved Pams and Value products. The team has also been working on major sustainability programmes designed to drive waste out of the business and look after New Zealand’s environment.

Behind the scenes Foodstuffs has been working hard to improve efficiency and allow the business to keep prices low and quality and service high.

“Key to our success is developing a world-class supply chain to ensure we have a great offer for our customers in store and online every day. This new 65,000m2 distribution centre and 5 Greenstar rated office complex will be at the heart and will enable our Co-op to work more collaboratively and effectively.”

It’s also proposed to consolidate three Foodstuffs facilities in Auckland into one best-in-class complex. The Co-op will continue to operate two DCs and a Support Centre in Palmerston North and a Support Centre in Wellington.

As part of these changes Foodstuffs North Island is proposing to close the Rotorua DC at the end of 2020 and move those operations to the new DC. Quin says, “In making the decision to build the new DC, we have been looking at all the options possible to make the Upper North Island operations as efficient as possible and fit for purpose over the next 30 years. Long term, we believe that the best option is to support our Upper North Island stores with one purpose-built Ambient DC.

“We wanted to share our proposal to close the Rotorua DC with our teams early in the project. If the proposal does go ahead, we feel it would be the right thing to do to give the team lots of notice and time to plan for the change.”

Foodstuffs North Island has yet to decide the future of its Roma Road site and will be working closely with a number of stakeholders, including local government, to determine the best use of the land in the interests of Auckland. “The Mt Roskill site is now considered almost inner-city – and we’re excited about unlocking this space.”

Quin says, “Right now, it’s about continuing to deliver for customers every day. We’ll remain at our legendary home in Mt Roskill until the new site is ready in 2020 and then we’ll be packing up and moving out to a bright, new, expansive future at The Landing.

“Our customers’ needs are changing fast and we believe all New Zealanders deserve more of what matters to them. For some this is more inspiration, more choice, more convenience, more value and more help making healthier food choices. For others, it’s all these things and more. We need to make sure we’re ready to face these changes head on.

“Based at the gateway to Aotearoa, our 100% New Zealand owned company will have a fantastic new centre with service at its heart. We’re totally committed to playing a key role in New Zealand’s future and helping meet the needs and aspirations of our team and customers.”

NEW ZEALAND: Foodstuffs announces big reduction in sugar and sodium content across Pams and Value products

NEW ZEALAND: Foodstuffs announces big reduction in sugar and sodium content across Pams and Value products

Auckland, New Zealand, 2017-Nov-27 — /EPR Retail News/ — Foodstuffs revealed today (24 November 2017) that it has implemented a massive drop in sugar and sodium content across a wide range of Pams and Value products – ranging in some cases from a 26% reduction in sugar to an 80% reduction in sodium.

Chris Quin, CEO Foodstuffs North Island, says, “Foodstuffs has made huge strides in delivering on our commitment to reduce Childhood Obesity.  We have several programmes in place including our very effective Food for Thought nutrition education programme, but we’ve made spectacular headway in reformulating hundreds of our Pams and Value products to reduce sugar and sodium content.

“To date we have removed 4,000 tonnes of sugar and 8,000 tonnes of sodium across our private label range, this equates to 740 Asian elephants’ worth of sugar and 76,000 All Blacks worth of salt (based on their average weights).  That’s a staggering saving – all going towards ensuring our community has access to healthier foods.”

Foodstuffs has committed to reviewing and reformulating all private label products and is also encouraging suppliers to do the same.  “Our research shows that customers are looking for healthier options – and we’re working very hard to deliver on that expectation.  It’s a vast job to review each product across New Zealand’s largest grocery brands, but we are totally committed.”

The results form part of a report to the Ministry of Health later this year which captures all the initiatives Foodstuffs has put in place to enhance the health and well-being of the community.

Quin says, “Foodstuffs believes that we have a duty of care to look after every New Zealander. A core part of that promise is to ensure that all New Zealanders have ready access to fresh, affordable, healthy food.

“We are delivering on our pledge to support the Government in their drive to reduce childhood obesity; reducing sugar and sodium content in our products, expanding the reach of our Food for Thought Programme, extensive support for the Starship Foundation with a focus on healthy food education and partnerships with foodbanks throughout New Zealand. However, we’re committed to doing more.

“We have made a significant investment in the Eat My Lunch programme – which aims to deliver 25,000 healthy lunches, per week, to children in need throughout New Zealand.  This will ensure more children have full tummies so they can unlock their potential.

Foodstuffs is excited about the inroads we have made already and the plans in place to help New Zealanders enjoy a healthy future.”

NEW ZEALAND: Foodstuffs launches Eat My Lunch meals at New World Victoria Park

Auckland, New Zealand, 2017-Nov-04 — /EPR Retail News/ — This week saw the retail launch in New World Victoria Park of Eat My Lunch.  This means that customers looking for a delicious lunch or dinner can purchase a Michael Meredith designed meal as part of their everyday shop, knowing that a New Zealand child will in turn be given a free school lunch.

Chris Quin, CEO Foodstuffs North Island says, “Our partnership with Eat My Lunch makes so much sense.  Like them we believe that good food is not a privilege, it’s a right.  To date they have provided more than 570,000 free lunches to children in need and by offering Eat My Lunch meals in our stores we can extend the reach of this innovative social enterprise even further.  Our first day in New World Victoria Park, saw 90 extra lunches being given to children – and it will only get bigger.”

The same meals available online through the Eat My Lunch ordering system are available in store.  Fresh, wholesome, delicious and generous – they cater to customers looking for a lunch, standard dinner, a ‘hungry’ dinner and a kid’s dinner.  Each meal is made and delivered daily into store from Monday to Friday.

The customer response has been fantastic, with many commending the store on being the first to offer the range.  Next up is Fresh Collective Alberton with others to follow when supply gets up to speed in Auckland and Wellington metro areas.

“We are delighted to be part of the next phase in Eat My Lunch’s drive to move from feeding 1,500 tamariki to 25,000,” says Jason Witehira, Owner-Operator of New World Victoria Park.  “It’s a pretty big goal and they need a partner like Foodstuffs to help them get there.  Already we’ve been able to help them streamline their processes to ensure a consistent, high quality supply of delicious, healthful meals to store – which in turn will support the growth of the ‘give’ part of their programme.”

Once people get their heads around social enterprise they can see how developing and nurturing innovative businesses like Eat My Lunch is a great way to address some burning social issues. Chris Quin says, “Eat My Lunch can tap into Foodstuffs’ expertise in running an efficient, safe, customer-led business which in the end is more sustainable over the long term.  Profits are fed back into the operation to grow and expand to meet community needs.”

Lisa King, founder and CEO of Eat My Lunch says it best when she states that she never wants Eat My Lunch to become a company that loses sight of the fact that “we were built on a social purpose and values. If financial objectives ever overtake our social ones, then we won’t be Eat My Lunch anymore.  That said, as we grow we need more operational processes all while maintaining agility, and that’s one of the key areas we’re working on with the Foodies team.”

Looking ahead Eat My Lunch and Foodstuffs are aiming to make the products available in all Foodstuffs North Island stores.  The implications for helping children across New Zealand flourish in school, thanks to learning with full tummies, is enormously positive.  “Given that we are in every community in New Zealand, and we have wonderful customers keen to do their bit to help out, we see our partnership with Eat My Lunch as having a hugely positive, long-term impact on the health and well-being of an important group of New Zealanders,” says Quin.

Foodstuffs North Island becomes Eat My Lunch strategic investor

Auckland, New Zealand, 2017-Sep-11 — /EPR Retail News/ — Eat My Lunch today announced a new partnership with Foodstuffs North Island Limited. The collaboration aims to enable Eat My Lunch to feed more Kiwi kids with support from the 100% New Zealand owned supermarket chain community reach and distribution channels.

Foodstuffs North Island joins Eat My Lunch as a strategic investor to assist them with growing scale and to maximise the proven social benefits the programme provides to children in need.

Eat My Lunch, is on a mission to ensure no Kiwi kid goes to school hungry. Currently, founder Lisa King and the team deliver around 1,700 GIVE* lunches a day to 48 schools across Auckland, Wellington and Hamilton.

“But this is only scratching the surface of the need. Our intel suggests there are at least 25,000 children in New Zealand going to school every day without lunch,” says King.

“Securing a partner like Foodstuffs is really exciting for us. Their ability to contribute both financially and in real terms by giving us access to their supply chain and wider community through their network of stores is invaluable and they will give us the freedom to grow.

“This collaboration will help us take a giant step towards achieving our mission goal of 25,000 free GIVE lunches a day for Kiwi kids in need. As a business we really needed a strategic partner like Foodstuffs to invest in us and help us realise our goals

Chris Quin, CEO for Foodstuffs North Island says the supermarket group was drawn to Eat My Lunch due to its innovative business model and the ability to make a scalable and significant impact on a growing social problem.

“As a 100% New Zealand owned company which is inherently based on individual owners’ entrepreneurship, being able to invest in a business like Eat My Lunch feels right,” says Quin. “Lisa and the team are not only entrepreneurial but they are filling an important social need. Contributing to their success is an awesome opportunity and an absolute privilege. We just want to stand behind them and empower the team.

“The initiative goes right to the heart of what matters to us – it’s about giving New Zealand kids the chance to realise their potential and get more out of life.  This awesome programme is practical and effective – we all know that full tummies give children more energy to learn and grow.”

The investment will be used to scale up the number of GIVE lunches, and extend the service throughout the country. Eat My Lunch retains a controlling interesting in the business.

Foodstuffs and Eat My Lunch partner to ensure no Kiwi kid goes to school hungry

Auckland, New Zealand, 2017-Sep-11 — /EPR Retail News/ — Chris Quin, CEO of Foodstuffs North Island, shares his perspective on a new strategic partnership with Eat My Lunch.

In New Zealand today, like many 1st world countries we still have a problem, not every child goes to school with a healthy lunch to power their day and their learning. There are many causes of this, economic, some family and sometimes just education on how to look after healthy children. The reasons don’t matter as much as just taking the opportunity to do something about it.

Hunger gets in the way of children’s development, learning and growth. They can’t concentrate, they can’t be fully engaged; they are left on the side lines, they fade into the background, they become a statistic. There are around 25,000 kids a day in New Zealand who go to school without a decent lunch, and, we just talk some more – or do we?

It’s such a big opportunity that a New Zealand entrepreneur has developed a simple solution to address the problem.

Back in 2015, Lisa King, with the help of award-winning chef Michael Meredith, decided that inaction wasn’t good enough.  So, Eat My Lunch was born; a business on a mission to ensure no Kiwi kid goes to school hungry. It’s a fascinating model, a social enterprise that makes money from selling organisations a “BUY” Eat My Lunch, and soon an Eat My dinner product, and uses the income to generate a GIVE lunch for these kids who need it most.

Fast forward two years and the team now delivers around 1,700 GIVE lunches a day to 48 schools across Auckland, Wellington and Hamilton. For every BUY lunch purchased, Eat My Lunch gives a free lunch to a Kiwi kid who needs it.  While this is a great start, research shows that there are many more children in New Zealand who are going to school each day without lunch.

Eat My Lunch needed a partner to feed many more thousands of children. They need one with significant resources, systems and reach, and the right cultural fit.  That’s where the Foodstuffs team comes in.

We are partnering with Eat My Lunch to help them feed even more Kiwi kids. Our strategic investment to become a part owner of Eat My Lunch will be used to scale up the number of GIVE lunches, and extend the service throughout the country. While Eat My Lunch retains the controlling interesting in the business, Foodies will be supporting Eat My Lunch financially and in real terms by giving them access to our supply chain and a wider community, through our network of stores.

Eat My Lunch is a perfect fit with a 100% New Zealand-owned company with a footprint in every city, town and village in New Zealand. The social enterprise model also resonates strongly with a company like ours which is inherently based on individual owners’ entrepreneurship.  Being able to invest in a business like Eat My Lunch feels bloody right. Lisa and the team are not only entrepreneurial but they are filling an important social need. Foodies operators are also entrepreneurs, employers, mentors and sponsors in their communities.  Contributing to Eat My Lunch’s success is an awesome opportunity and an absolute privilege. We just want to stand behind them and empower their purpose.

Now that we have the partnership we are excited about what we can do from here. Eat My Lunch will continue to run their business as they do today. We will be contributing financially to help them grow their business and in real terms by giving them access to our Supply Chain and wider community through our extensive network of stores.

Next week the Foodies North Island Leadership Team will have a strategy day with the Eat My Lunch team to explore the possibilities of stocking their BUY product in our stores, partnering on meal kits and their new Eat My Dinner product, and any other way that we can help grow the success of the social good that Eat My Lunch are doing to address the 25,000 kids in New Zealand who don’t regularly get lunch. This is a fantastic fit with making sure New Zealanders get more out life and an exciting opportunity to take another step in meal solutions for our customers. I know our FSNI and store teams are all keen to pitch in and help make this happen.

The initiative goes right to the heart of what matters to us – it’s about giving New Zealand kids the chance to realise their potential and get more out of life. This awesome programme is practical and effective – we all know that full tummies give children more energy to learn and grow.

Lisa King says it best: “This collaboration with Foodstuffs will help us take a giant step towards achieving our mission goal of 25,000 free GIVE lunches a day for Kiwi kids in need. It’s heart-breaking walking into schools with something as simple as a few nutritious sandwiches and fruit knowing that this might be the best they get that day. But, it’s heart-lifting to know that with a partner like Foodstuffs investing in what we are doing, we will be able to realise our goals.”

Our Business absolutely has a responsibility to act in the best interests of its community – after all we rely on the community to keep us in business, so let’s invest in our people, our whanau, our neighbours and above all our children.

Foodstuffs opens new Fresh Collective by New World store in Mount Albert, central Auckland

Auckland, New Zealand, 2017-Aug-23 — /EPR Retail News/ — Foodstuffs North Island has opened its second Fresh Collective by New World store in the central Auckland suburb of Mount Albert. The store at 1 Alberton Ave was formerly a Four Square. It closed on June 20 so that refurbishment work could begin.

“We’re very excited to be able to reveal the new store to Mount Albert residents,” Foodstuffs North Island Chief Executive Chris Quin says. “They’ve waited patiently for it to reopen and we think they’re going to love their new local.”

The Mount Albert store not only has a new frontage with Fresh Collective by New World branding, but a completely new internal layout, new product offerings and special features not seen in Foodstuffs stores before.

As well as picking up a great cup of coffee from the in-house barista, customers can now order fresh smoothies; grab some sushi; pick up a pizza fresh from the pizza oven; or choose a chicken, basted to order from the rotisserie. There is also a bakery, a butcher and a fresh seafood counter where you can see delicious meat and kai moana you’ve selected being prepared.

Steve McClean, owner operator for Fresh Collective Alberton Ave says, “The store also has an exciting new feature; the Enomatic wine tasting machine, which allows customers to taste a select variety of wine before purchase. We’ve long been known for our wine selection here at Alberton Ave but now customers will be able to try before they buy, giving them an added level of comfort they are making a choice that best suits them.

“We are really excited about giving our customers a smaller grocery store that answers that question of ‘what will we eat tonight’. There’s plenty of fresh, take-home meal solutions including Just Cook It kits which come complete with pre-measured fresh ingredients, a recipe and instructions for either two or a four people.”

The Fresh Collective has fresh food at its heart, with an extensive deli counter, a full specialty cheese range and an extensive range of fresh fruit and vegetables. Chris Quin, CEO Foodstuffs North Island says, “Fresh Collective by New World also has your everyday grocery needs, so that you can top up with the basics at the same time.

“The business has been researching how customers use stores in different areas. In urban environments people pop in several times a week for different reasons; sometimes they’re just looking for a coffee or lunch plus a couple of grocery items. At other times they’re after a handy meal solution for tonight’s dinner. Whatever their reason for shopping, they want the experience to be warm, inviting and full of the delightful sights and smells you get in a beautiful fresh food market.

“We intend to keep refining the concept as we go, to suit each community. We’ll be looking at other urban areas in the North Island where Fresh Collective by New World will suit our customers.”

New World trials online shopping app, I shop New World at Mt Roskill store

Supermarket shoppers in Mt Roskill are the first to try New World’s online shopping app, I shop New World.

Auckland, New Zealand, 2017-Jul-19 — /EPR Retail News/ — Foodstuffs North Island has released a beta version of the app for its New World Mt Roskill customers to test, Chief Executive Chris Quin says.

“We want to see how the app works for our customers and get their feedback before we roll this out to other parts of the country,” he says. “By developing the app in collaboration with our customers, we’ll create something that offers a much better user experience.

“Globally, companies have worked out that if you launch your digital products early, you glean valuable information on how usable they are, and you can refine what you’re offering. That’s our intention with I shop New World. We want to hear what our customers think and develop this with customers to meet their needs.”

The app is available for both Android and Apple smartphone and tablet users.

“We chose to develop I shop New World as an app first, because smartphones are fast becoming the nation’s most popular device. At least 70 percent of Kiwis have one.[1] And in the US, we’ve seen that mobile apps are where people are spending the majority of their time online – more than desktop usage or mobile web surfing.[2]”

Customers can browse virtual shelves in the I shop New World app for their favourite products and easily add these to their basket through drag and drop functionality, making the experience simple, interactive and fun.

Features include the ability to create and save multiple shopping lists, so there’s no need to start from scratch every time; save multiple addresses, so you can shop and deliver groceries for family or friends; and securely save multiple credit card details.

“You can use the Click & Collect service to order via the app and collect your shopping from your local store, or you can choose to have your groceries delivered. Either way, the app is designed to make your grocery shopping experience that much more convenient, because you can do it all from your tablet or smartphone,” Quin says.
“We’ve been trialling a Click & Collect service at our New World Thorndon and Levin stores for a couple of years now, which has given us lots of useful insights into how our customers use the service.

“Our Click & Collect lockers are outside the store’s front door with their own dedicated parking bays. That means you can pull up and grab your groceries without having to get the kids out of the car,” Quin says.

Foodstuffs intends to expand the test area to include more Auckland and Wellington stores before rolling out I shop New World further, and also plans to develop a web version.

NEW ZEALAND: Fresh Collective by New World — A new small-format grocery brand

Auckland, New Zealand, 2017-Jul-05 — /EPR Retail News/ — A new small-format grocery brand has entered the market with the launch of Fresh Collective by New World. The store at 10a Constellation Drive on Auckland’s North Shore is the first to showcase this new brand.

The store joined the Foodstuffs North Island co-operative in May, and has been operating under a temporary New World banner since then. Today [July 4], the store reopened with a new look, new layout and new product offerings.

As well as picking up a great cup of coffee from the in-house barista, customers can now order fresh smoothies; grab some sushi; choose a meal kit for dinner tonight or pick up some premium cuts from the in-house butcher. Customers can also get their everyday, food-focused top-up grocery needs. The butcher, bakery and fresh seafood counter are all on show, so customers can see the goods they’ve selected being prepared.

“For some time now, we’ve been analysing what we offer our urban customers,” Foodstuffs North Island CEO Chris Quin says. “We wanted to give them a smaller grocery experience that answers that question of ‘what will we eat tonight’ with plenty of fresh produce and take-home meal solutions. “The store has fresh food at its heart, with an extensive deli counter, a full specialty cheese range and an extensive range of fresh fruit and vegetables. It brings the best of what New World offers to a small, local store.”

“Fresh Collective by New World also has your everyday grocery needs, so that you can top up with the basics at the same time,” he says. “We’ve been researching how our customers use our stores. In urban areas, they pop in several times a week for different reasons. Sometimes they’re just looking for a coffee or lunch, but might grab a couple of grocery items at the same time. Sometimes they’re looking for a handy meal solution for tonight’s dinner. Whatever their reason for shopping, they want the experience to be warm, inviting and full of the delightful sights and smells you get in a beautiful fresh food market.”

“We’ve been working on this concept for some time. We created a prototype of what a Fresh Collective experience would look like, which allowed everyone involved to walk around inside it and comment on the design and customer flow. That was a first for us, and we found it a really useful, creative part of the process. To be able to pick up the deli counter and move it to another position, or make an aisle a little wider, was really helpful.”

The next Fresh Collective by New World store will open in Mt Albert in the coming weeks. The Alberton Four Square store has been closed since June 20 while the refurbishment work takes place.

“We intend to keep refining the concept as we go, to suit each community. So there will be exciting features at the Mt Albert store that are different to what’s on offer at Constellation Drive. “We are looking at other urban areas in the North Island where Fresh Collective by New World will suit our customers’ needs.”

PAK’nSAVE Albany owner Paul Blackwell honoured with the 2017 Blake Leader Award

Auckland, New Zealand, 2017-Jun-22 — /EPR Retail News/ — Inspirational leader Paul Blackwell and owner of PAK’nSAVE Albany has received the 2017 Blake Leader Award in recognition of outstanding contribution.

If you were to ask anyone who knows Paul Blackwell they will tell you not only can he be counted on for sound business advice, he’s the kind of boss who takes his greatest pleasure in his team’s success – over and above that of his own. He’s the first to brush off any praise for his achievements, so you can be assured being in the spotlight for winning a Blake Leader Award makes him feel pretty uncomfortable.

Regardless, Foodstuffs North Island CEO Chris Quin, who nominated Paul, can’t think of a more deserving recipient for someone who has determination, a will to succeed and a belief in achieving extraordinary things in business, sport and community.

“A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way”, and this is exactly how Paul Blackwell inspires the people around him. My colleagues constantly tell me that Paul never seeks acknowledgment – his personal reward is about making a real and meaningful difference. Paul and his wife Liz have a stellar list of accomplishments which includes owning one of the most successful PAK’nSAVE stores in the country, coaching hundreds of employees to grow, publishing inspirational works, supporting his church and the community and steering the New Zealand Breakers to a series of heart-stopping wins in the Australian National Basketball League.”

Described as an inspirational husband, father and brother, colleague, boss, Chairman and Director, the list of Paul’s projects makes for impressive reading:

  • 18 years running one of the highest performing North Island PAK’nSAVE stores, claiming Store of the Year in 2016
  • Manager at Farmers, owner of PaperPlus stores, New World store owner, PAK’nSAVE store owner, Foodstuffs North Island director and PQ Blackwell Publishing director
  • Church and community leader
  • Significant supporter of Starship and Heart Kids
  • Owner, Director and Chair of the New Zealand Breakers (with four ANBL Championship wins)

But, it’s the relationship that Paul Blackwell has with the wider community through the Breakers which really highlights his inspirational leadership. Under Paul’s leadership the team has visited hundreds of schools talking with tens of thousands of children, donating tens of thousands of basketballs, skills manuals, coaching guides and DVDs as part of their community programmes. While the team focuses on delivering on the court the Breakers have three people working fulltime in the community – encouraging kids to play in an exciting, globally-recognised sport. That’s all down to Paul and Liz’s personal philosophy of giving back.

Peter Anderson, Chairman of Foodstuffs North Island, has this to add about Paul. “He inspires confidence and passion in those around him. He is very focused on achieving his goals but never at the expense of compromising his very strong values. Paul has integrity and is regarded by all as a natural, unassuming and humble leader, more interested in others’ success than his own. We are delighted that Paul and Liz’s work has been acknowledged by the Sir Peter Blake Trust. It is a thoroughly well-deserved honour.”

Chris Quin adds, “When I asked for Paul’s peers to give us a hand to complete his nomination there was no shortage of contributions. People were knocking down my door to offer their support. Paul Blackwell is universally admired by everyone who knows him. They could not think of anyone more deserving of a Blake Leader Award.”

NEW ZEALAND: Foodstuffs supermarkets to be microbead-free nationwide from 1 July 2017

Auckland, New Zealand, 2017-Jun-08 — /EPR Retail News/ — On World Oceans Day Foodstuffs has announced that its supermarkets, which include New World, PAK’nSAVE and  Four Square, will be microbead-free nationwide from 1 July 2017; a full year ahead of the Government’s proposed date for banning microbeads from New Zealand  stores.

  •  New World, PAK’nSAVE and Four Square will be microbead free from 1 July 2017
  •  12 months ahead of schedule as mandated by Government
  •  Announcement ahead of World Oceans Day, June 8
  •  Suppliers jumped on board to be part of the positive environmental change

To celebrate going microbead free we will be running a microbead amnesty with our friends at Essano in all New World stores.  We’ll also be offering some great deals at PAK’nSAVE and Four Square. The amnesty at New World stores will start week commencing 10 July 2017.  We’ll be updating our website and Facebook very soon with the details on when and where you can bring in one product per customer containing microbeads and swap it for a free Essano Gentle Facial Exfoliator.  Keep an eye out for the update!

On World Oceans Day Foodstuffs has announced that its supermarkets, which include New World, PAK’nSAVE and  Four Square, will be microbead-free nationwide from 1 July 2017; a full year ahead of the Government’s proposed date for banning microbeads from New Zealand  stores.

Scientific research has proven that the tiny beads of plastic used as an exfoliating agent in many skin cleansing products are finding their way into drains and ultimately the marine environment where they fail to break down or are consumed by marine life.

Chris Quin, Foodstuffs North Island CEO, says the business started discussions with suppliers in 2016 with the aim of speeding up the change.  “We’re pleased to say that many suppliers had already reformulated their products substituting the plastic beads with natural ingredients. Where brands are unable to meet our needs we’ll delist the products until new formulations are available.”

Making positive change takes a collective approach. “Minimising our impact on the environment is a priority issue and banning microbeads is absolutely the right thing to do. The changes we’re making will have a positive impact on marine life – it’s great we were able to announce this change on World Oceans Day. That said we know there’s more work to be done and we will continue to see how we can reduce plastics wherever we can.

“Across the two Foodstuffs Co-operatives* we have almost 30,000 team members committed to reducing waste and our environmental impact.  Hundreds of thousands of our customers are also doing their best to make the right choices – using their own bags, choosing sustainable products and shopping thoughtfully on a daily basis.  Our suppliers are also a big part of the solution – and it speaks volumes that they have worked with us to provide customers with more sustainable products.

Foodstuffs has introduced other environmental initiatives including 100% recyclable meat trays, LED lighting, and new refrigeration and energy systems. Foodstuffs is also a foundation partner of the Packaging Forum’s Soft Plastics Recycling Programme, collecting over five tonnes a week of packaging in purpose-designed bins located at the front of stores. The material is then reprocessed into new products such as street furniture and decking.

Foodstuffs’ call to save Kiwi favourites Jaffas and Pineapple Lumps

Auckland, New Zealand, 2017-Jun-03 — /EPR Retail News/ — Like most New Zealanders, we are gutted at the prospect that the days are numbered for our iconic Jaffas, Pineapple Lumps, Buzz Bars, and Pinky Bars. Foodstuffs, the owner of PAK’nSAVE, New World, and Four Square, is a proud New Zealand company, and like the rest of the country we grew up with these Kiwi favourites. Reading today’s news that time is fast running out to save these favourite treats gave us a brilliant idea.

If you think you have what it takes to help us save them for New Zealand, we’ll get right behind you. We’ll work with you to help you get set up to sell to us, cram our shelves with them, and we’ll then help promote them to the millions of New Zealanders and visitors to this fine country who come through our doors each week. We’ll work up a sweat like nothing you’ve ever seen, unless it was on the ABs’ foreheads in an international test match, or the Silver Ferns as they race around the court against the Aussies, or our heroes in Bermuda as they race from side to side on that insanely scary boat.

So, if you’re sitting on the fence. Get off it now. Be a saviour. Give us a call. And let’s work together to rescue these awesome treats.

We’re waiting! C’mon.

Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority to fund Foodstuffs’ trial of electric delivery vans across its New World and PAK’nSAVE supermarkets in 2017

Auckland, New Zealand, 2017-Jan-22 — /EPR Retail News/ — The Honourable Judith Collins has today  (20 January 2017) announced that the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) will be providing funding to support Foodstuffs trial of electric delivery vans across its New World and PAK’nSAVE supermarkets in 2017.

“This is the first time a commercial electric vehicle fleet of this size has been trialled in New Zealand,” says Chris Quin, CEO, Foodstuffs North Island Ltd. “The funding will go towards the implementation of 28 zero emission electric delivery vans at New World and PAK’nSAVE stores across the North and South Island.”

According to Quin when the project was put to the business initial interest from stores was incredibly positive. “Our owners recognise and support Foodstuffs’ commitment to be more sustainable and at the leading edge of new technology. Our business practices are continually evolving to be more sustainable, this is demonstrated through our work on recyclable packaging, food donation, natural refrigeration systems and energy efficiency and ensures the business will be well placed over the coming years.”

Quin adds, “It fits in perfectly with Foodstuffs drive to reduce environmental impacts and support brand NZ. Electric vehicles offer the potential to both reduce the business’ dependence on imported fuels whilst at the same time reducing road based transport emissions by 100%.”

“Add to this the fact the electricity powering the vehicles is 100% locally generated and over 80% renewably generated through hydro, wind and geothermal sources – meaning we are investing in both New Zealand‘s economy and its environment.”

The Nissan e-NV 200 delivery vans will be imported over the next year from Europe where they are manufactured. Once charged they are capable of travelling up to 150 kilometres at a time without generating either noise or emissions.

Foodstuffs is in discussion with EECA about the potential installation of separate public electric vehicle charging points at key New World and PAK’nSAVE store locations throughout the country.

“The idea is that the provision of easily accessible charging facilities will encourage the public to gradually transition away from petrol and diesel cars to sustainable electric vehicles. You will be able to charge your car whilst grabbing your groceries,” says Quin.

New World Hutt City re-opens just in time for Christmas

Auckland, New Zealand, 2016-Dec-21 — /EPR Retail News/ — New World Hutt City re-opens at 1 pm Tuesday 20 December, 2016 and will be operating as usual with great products and awesome service. The Williams family want to say thanks to patient customers and fantastic staff. The Williams family, owner-operators of New World Hutt City just want to say thanks for the support, best wishes and patience from customers and staff alike. “We had so many customers who have saved their Christmas shop for us, so we’re expecting to be really busy over the next few days,” says Steve Williams.

For the last few days the New World team has been running a pop-up supermarket in the car park to ensure that customers could stock up on essentials at this busy time. “It was such an innovative way to keep our customers happy and the store staff busy,” says Chris Quin, CEO Foodstuffs North Island. “It took some doing, but it’s a model we could now run elsewhere should we need to – fingers crossed we don’t!”

The pop-up closed for good at 8 pm on Monday 19 December and the New World Hutt City store re-opens for business as usual from 1 pm, Tuesday 20 December – in plenty of time for locals to get sorted for Christmas.

“We know there are other businesses still affected by the demolition and we absolutely feel for them – it has really impacted our team and customers. We’re thankful for the support we’ve had from Council who have worked collaboratively with us.  If there is any way we can help other people in the same boat – we’re happy to,” says Steve.

New World Hutt City normal operating hours are 7 am to 10 pm, seven days. The supermarket will be closed on Christmas Day, but is otherwise open for business through the festive season and what is hoped by all will be a great summer.

New World Hutt City Pop-up store will be built in 24 hours

Auckland, New Zealand, 2016-Dec-12 — /EPR Retail News/ — We’ve been blown away by how popular our pop-up supermarket is. It’s so great to have our valued customers back shopping with us again while we wait to hear when we can re-open our proper store.

Come on down and check out the fresh fruit and veg, and our chillers packed with delicious dairy and deli items. 750 top favourite products are here to stock up the fridge and pantry at home. Laundry and bathroom items are also available and of course all at the great prices you’re used to. Your favourite New World team members are here to help you with whatever you need!

There’s loads of parking, you can use EFTPOS, and earn 2x points with your Clubcard.  We’re open from 8am to 8pm. Come on down. Access to the pop-up supermarket is from Kings Crescent.

New World Hutt City owners Steve and Sarah Williams have been truly overwhelmed by the messages of support from long-time customers who are keen for them to be back up and running with Christmas just around the corner. With typical Kiwi ingenuity they’re installing a pop-up shop in a giant marquee in a safe zone outside the existing store to cater to a very patient horde of loyal shoppers.

“We’ve had to close our store due to the required demolition of the Queensgate car park building.  It’s frustrating as our store is perfectly sound and packed to the rafters with awesome products our customers need.  We just can’t let them in safely at the moment,” says Sarah.

“So, the clever team at Foodstuffs North Island put their thinking caps on and together we’ve come up with a ‘New World Hutt Pop-up’ which will be live for a week or so.  The pop-up store will sit in our car park and offer a wide variety of fresh fruit and veg, popular dairy, meats, deli and frozen items and our most sought-after weekly grocery products.  We’ll have around 750 of our most popular items available for sale and of course it’s all the great quality and good value our customers know and love. ”

In the true spirit of the Foodstuffs Co-operative it’s been a real team effort to get this off the ground says Chris Quin, CEO Foodstuffs North Island.  “Our unique culture gives us the chance to think outside the square, and the close personal bonds we have with our owner-operators, and the connection they have in turn with their customers, push the whole team to do extraordinary things every day.”

The large marquee will be a real talking point in Hutt City. “There will still be plenty of parking, customers will be able to use EFTPOS, and everyone can still earn points on their New World Clubcard,” says Steve Williams, the other half of the husband and wife owner-operator team.  “Our staff can’t wait to get back in amongst it again, and catch up with customers they are used to seeing each week.”

The pop-up is likely to be in place until the Hutt City Council declares it’s safe to re-open the store following the demolition of the Queensgate car park and cinema.  “We’ve worked really closely with Council.  They have been very supportive at a very tough time for us and a number of other businesses in the area.  We’re hopeful to be back in the store proper as soon as possible,” says Chris Quin.

In the meantime Steve and Sarah want to thank all their customers and their amazing staff who have pulled out all the stops to get the pop-up going.  “We’re getting back on our feet again, and want to help you get back to normal too,” says Steve.  “Christmas is just around the corner, it’s time to load up on essentials – after all, there’s actually a lot to be thankful for, and it’s a time of year when generosity means everything.”

New World Hutt City closed until further notice due to earthquake damage risk identified

Auckland, New Zealand, 2016-Nov-26 — /EPR Retail News/ — New World Hutt City is currently closed due to the possible demolition of a neighbouring building at the Queensgate Mall.

Just prior to 8pm this evening (24/11/2016) Hutt City Council issued Foodstuffs with a warrant under the s129 Building Act 2004 regarding earthquake damage risk identified with the Queensgate Building. Receipt of the warrant means that with immediate effect the decision was taken to close New World Hutt City. The store will remain closed until further notice.

No other Foodstuffs stores in the Wellington region are affected by this issue and there are no safety issues with the New World Hutt City building. The store has been cleared by engineers following last week’s earthquakes and the closure is a precautionary measure only due to the potential risk posed by the neighbouring Queensgate Building.

“We are unable to give any further detail at this stage,” says Chris Quin, CEO, Foodstuffs North Island Ltd. “Our priority right now is with the customers and staff and ensuring the appropriate measures are taken with the closure of the store. We apologise to customers for the inconvenience, but staff and customer safety is paramount and legally we are required to act.”

The Williams family have been part of the Hutt City community for around 30 years, they are 100% committed to working with council and getting the store open again as soon as possible.

Steve Williams says, “Sarah and I are absolutely gutted that the store has been closed tonight. The team really pulled together following last Sunday night’s earthquake, they pitched in to get the store cleaned up and open for business and despite the aftershocks and bad weather we kept serving our loyal customers. To get through all of that unscathed and have the store closed due to risk from a neighbouring building is really tough to deal with – I’ve personally been at this store for over 25 years and I can guarantee you we’re not going anywhere. Our top priority is working with council to get the store open and serving the community again as soon as we can.”

“On behalf of the Williams family I would like to apologise to all of our loyal customers for the inconvenience, please bear with us, we are doing everything we can to work this through and get back to business as usual,” says Steve.

New World Hutt City customers are advised that the nearest New World stores to Hutt City are;

  • New World Silverstream – 28 Whiteman’s Rd, Silverstream
  • New World Railway Metro – Wellington Railway Station, 2 Bunny Street, Wellington

Foodstuffs announces post earthquake store updates

Auckland, New Zealand, 2016-Nov-20 — /EPR Retail News/ — We would like to advise customers that outside of the affected area’s all New World, PAK’nSAVE and Four Square stores are open and operational as normal. Stores have plenty of product on the shelf and it is business as usual – we encourage customers to shop as normal which will help ensure the business can focus on the affected areas and helping stores that are currently closed clean up and re-open.

Four Square Raglan to the rescue with much needed water

Updated on November 18/11/2016

Raglan’s water supply was affected after the 7.8 earthquake on Monday morning and continuing aftershocks. After the earthquakes the spring which supplies Raglan’s water turned dirty and the water treatment plant had to be closed down and supplies trucked in.

In addition to water tankers coming in from around the North Island, organised by the Waikato District Council, the team at Four Square Raglan & Foodstuffs organised a donation of 6,000 litres of bottled drinking water for the seaside town. Owner-operators Satnam and Harshi Bains were delighted to help.  “It’s amazing that even as far away as Raglan we’ve been affected by the quakes in the South Island.  The community pulled together and the WDC did a fantastic job of keeping the town supplied with water.  We’re pleased we could do our bit.  We’re luckier than many others, that’s for sure.”

With the exception of Four Square Kaikoura which is currently closed all other stores around the country are open for business serving their communities.

Keeping the Capital fed and watered – New World pulls out all the stops

  • All Foodstuffs North Island stores operating as per usual (New World, PAK’nSAVE, Four Square) and our distribution centres
  • Well-ranged, no stock issues and trading well
  • Huge collaborative effort across the Co-Operative

Updated at 18/11/2016 15:06

It wasn’t only the colossal earthquakes wreaking havoc in Wellington, the weather didn’t play ball either. New World stores in central Wellington were briefly affected by the turmoil – but, without exception, they were back up and running by Monday afternoon.

“It’s certainly been a week where we moved rapidly from earthquake crisis management to flood crisis management, but New Zealanders have a DNA that shows up very well in a crisis,” says Chris Quin, Managing Director, Foodstuffs North Island (FSNI). “The team were awesome when it comes to our willingness to help each other, collaboration and accountability.”

In a letter to the FSNI team today, Quin remarks how across 24 hours he saw the team go from three large stores not operating, supply chain disruption and the regional support office at Silverstream closed, to having all stores being open, distribution sorted and serving understandably rattled customers with the things they needed to look after their families.  Most importantly, the team was safe and doing their part to support their neighbourhoods.

“Testament to the way we’ve come through these events is the fact that our owner-operators are really close to their communities and their teams and they know what they need from the get-go.  On practical level we also have well-designed, built and maintained stores and systems and simply awesome people,” says Quin. “They turn up and are incredibly willing – they collaborate and just try and help each other and their customers.”

One standout example of the team going the extra mile comes from Taranaki, hit hard by winds and rain taking down trees and power lines. “Karl and Tina Turner owner-operators of Four Square Kaponga pitched in by providing food and coffee for all the firemen and linesmen working to put everything back into order. They finished up around midnight and were back at it again at 4.30 am in the morning, providing pies for the crew who had been working all night. That’s the Kiwi way.”

Wellington’s inner-city New World stores, where the impact of the quakes was felt the hardest, were back up and running on Monday, despite constant aftershocks and wild weather, thanks to the commitment from the teams in store and the support of other stores and suppliers from around Wellington and the rest of the North Island.  “Fresh milk, bottled water and chilled products are plentiful, and our shelves are full of grocery items – it’s business as usual,” says Quin.

Kiwi spirit well and truly alive at New World Kaikoura

  • Store open and trading thanks to amazing efforts by staff and support from customers
  • Supplies available for the community thanks to concerted effort from the business, Civil Defence, RNZAF and more

Updated at 17/11/2016 12:00

New World Kaikoura owners Glen Steele and Melissa Sprott have been blown away by how their team has rallied to get the store up and running in hugely challenging conditions.

“We’re open, there is product on the shelves and the community is relieved that they can get much-needed supplies. None of this would have been possible without the fantastic efforts of our wonderful staff.  Their own homes and families have been affected by the quakes and the on-going aftershocks but, like us, they understand how we all want to get back to normal as quickly as possible,” says Glen.  “The team are like family to us, and when things calm down we’ll definitely be having a BBQ and a few beers to say thank you.”

The Inland Road from Culverden to Kaikoura is now open to Civil Defence and which will, in the next few days, enable a more regular supply of products for the store which is now the only supermarket option for the community.  Glen and Melissa believe that getting the business up and trading again at full capacity will definitely boost spirits – and enable the town to recover more quickly.

The New World Kaikoura store is currently open from 8 am to 5 pm.  Operating hours will be re-assessed on Monday 21 November, as Glen and Melissa are keen to let the community know the expected hours for the following week as soon as they can.

Glen says, “The most sought after items post-quake have been tinned food, beverages including water and other non-perishables such as nappies and personal hygiene products.”

“It’s been tough for the locals not being able to shower – these everyday activities are now very much a luxury.  Just like the Christchurch quakes keeping clean and comfortable is one of the most important concerns for our customers.  Sanitiser and other non-water based products such as wipes are very much in demand,” adds Melissa. “Other than that, it’s business as usual in these unusual times – we are adjusting to our new normal. And we’re really grateful that we’ve been able to get back up and running quickly thanks to everyone pulling together, as is the Kiwi way.”

Bottled water availability in Wellington

Updated at 16/11/2016 15:30

On behalf of Foodstuffs we would like to confirm that it is business as usual in terms of supply to the Wellington region, specifically there are no shortages of bottled water in our New World and PAK’nSAVE stores.

Earlier this week, in addition to the normal supply of stock in the distribution centre (DC), we sent 20 additional truckloads, which equates to 300,000 litres of water, to the Palmerston North DC for distribution to stores in the lower North Island as they require it. At the moment we have approximately 250,000 litres of water in the DC which continues to be replenished each day.

Based on the current situation we are not anticipating any shortages of bottled water as there is sufficient supply within our network.

All central Wellington stores have confirmed they have well stocked water shelves, so customers need not be concerned.

All of our central Wellington stores are open and trading including;

  • New World Wellington City
  • New World Willis Street
  • New World Railway
  • New World Thorndon

New World Kaikoura re-opens

Updated at 14/11/2016 17:00

There’s some good news for the Kaikoura community this morning as the New World supermarket re-opened.

Steve Anderson, CEO, Foodstuffs South Island Limited says, ”The team worked round the clock yesterday to get access to Kaikoura and assist the owners in re-opening the store this morning. They are facing significant challenges with key services such as power and water having been out in the town for a period of time yesterday.”

“With the help of emergency services we were able to fly an engineer into Kaikoura to assess the store, thankfully it has been declared structurally sound which means we can resume trading this morning.”

“The store has opened with reduced stock availability as fresh and frozen products have been affected due to the power outages. We would like to let customers know they can come to the store to access emergency supplies and staff will be on hand to assist. The store is working hard to manage stock and ensure all of the community can access supplies, and at this time customers are being served from the front foyer with the assistance of staff.”

“Access to the community is still very limited and the business is working with Civil Defence to get supplies through to the store but until this detail is confirmed the store is unable to re-stock. We would ask the community to bear with the owners and their staff while they attempt to ensure everyone has the opportunity to access key staples such as water, canned goods and other essential items.”

Anderson confirms that with the exception of Kaikoura, Foodstuffs (North and South Island) has more than adequate stock available so customers should not be concerned, and except for the odd delay, trucks are continuing to arrive at stores as normal and stores are managing stock to ensure that everyone has access to staple items. “It’s great news that trucks are now coming across on the Interisland ferries and are able to access Christchurch via the Lewis Pass and on top of this we are continuing to utilise sea freight options.”

The South Island DCs are well stocked and the business has strong resilience plans in place to ensure supply is maintained following an event such as the earthquake. Foodstuffs is working with Civil Defence, suppliers and Foodstuffs North Island to ensure continuity of supply is maintained.

“At this stage our focus is on Kaikoura and the surrounding communities which have been hardest hit. We need to ensure they have access to essential supplies of food and water, both in the short and long term. Our supply chain is incredibly robust and has been tested many times through the Canterbury earthquakes. Product is arriving to stores and a variety of freight options are being utilised across the supply chain.”

Advice to customers is to shop as normal, the supply chain is intact and the business is working hard to ensure the remaining stores open as soon as possible.

o   All stores are now open

New World owner-operator Jason Witehira wins the 2016 Outstanding Māori Business Leaders Award

New World owner-operator Jason Witehira, the winner of the 2016 Outstanding Māori Business Leaders Award, is hoping his win will serve as an inspiration for other Māori men and women. Witehira, who owns New World Victoria Park and is also chairman of the New World North Island supermarket owners’ group, was honoured at the Aotearoa New Zealand Māori Business Leaders Awards, on Friday night.

Auckland, New Zealand, 2016-May-18 — /EPR Retail News/ — He says he’s proud and honoured to have had his 32 years of working in the retail food industry acknowledged by the awards, which are run by the University of Auckland Business School. “I’m also hopeful that my win will serve as inspiration to others of what can be achieved with a bit of focus and the right attitude,” says Witehira.

Witehira’s rise up the supermarket ladder started right at the bottom, stacking produce as a 16-year-old school leaver at New World Edmond Road in Rotorua, in 1984. Within two years, he’d been promoted to produce department manager, and in 1998 he became a supermarket owner, acquiring the New World Taumarunui. In 2001, Jason and his wife, Kimiora, bought the New World at Botany Town Centre. Then, in 2010, moved to New World Victoria Park, which is located in the heart of Auckland City.

In an emotional acceptance speech, Witehira said success is about “being an individual and believing in yourself.” Witehira believes that if you stay true to yourself and true to your company values you will succeed.

“I always knew I could run a store, and I tried hard to listen to those who were already doing it and took their advice on board,” he adds.

Among his mentors, Witehira names other Foodstuffs owner-operators including Leo O’Sullivan (PAK’nSAVE Petone), Russ Wilkinson (New World Mount Roskill) and Rob Redwood (PAK’nSAVE Glen Innes). “All three have had a big influence on my career path and success – all in different ways and all at different stages throughout my career.”

For Witehira though, none of this would have happened without his family, “it’s whānau that’s the key to my success”. “My wife and business partner, Kimiora, is my greatest mentor, having helped build all three stores, so this award is half hers.”

“Through my children, too, I’ve learnt the art of patience and perseverance, and it’s a real pleasure having my sons working with me now.”

Witehira insists, however, that this win isn’t just his and his whānau’s to celebrate.

“There are many great people out there that are successful in their own right without the accolades I have received.”

Foodstuffs North Island Ltd CEO, Chris Quin, says the company is thrilled to see one of its members honoured in such a way. “Once again we see someone who has started their career in a supermarket being recognised as a leader not only within our organisation, but in the wider business community, and for New Zealand’s future.”

“He really is a true inspiration to all our hard working staff, and lives the purpose of making sure New Zealanders get more out of Life” says Quin.

New World becomes the first retailer to sell the iconic, Sir Peter Blake, special edition 20th anniversary Red Socks

New World, this week announced that they will be the first retailer to sell the iconic, Sir Peter Blake, special edition 20th anniversary Red Socks.

AUCKLAND, New Zealand, 2015-12-8 — /EPR Retail News/ — Sir Peter Blake, one of our greatest New Zealanders, 20 years ago pulled on a humble pair of red socks, engaged a whole county and went on to win the Americas Cup.

Now, Sir Peter Blake’s Red Socks have become a symbol of what we most love about being Kiwis. No matter what the odds or the competition we face, if we set our sights on a goal, we can achieve it.

Chris Quin, CEO, Foodstuffs North Island says as a proud New Zealand owned and operated business, pairing up with the Sir Peter Blake Trust was a no brainer.

Sir Peter’s red socks have a special place in our nation’s history and remind us all to dream big. New World is delighted to be supporting the Sir Peter Blake Trust and their ongoing work in the community,” says Quin.

Shelley Campbell, Sir Peter Blake Trust CEO, says it is delighted that New World is selling the famous red socks.

New World, a Kiwi owned and operated business, is a natural fit for the Trust. Both companies embrace all things New Zealand – and Red Socks are the epitome of what our country stands for, so we are thrilled to be partnering with New World for the 20th anniversary of this iconic Kiwi item.

We would also like to thank the MediaWorks Foundation for their support,” says Campbell

Foodstuffs North Island names New Zealand business leader Chris Quin as its next CEO

Leading grocery co-operative Foodstuffs North Island (FSNI) has appointed the experienced New Zealand business leader Chris Quin as its next CEO.

FSNI Chairman Peter Anderson says Chris Quin has the leadership skills and business experience to take the co-op into a new phase of excellence in meeting the needs of New Zealand shoppers

North Island, New Zealand, 2015-5-11 — /EPR Retail News/ — Leading grocery co-operative Foodstuffs North Island (FSNI) has appointed the experienced New Zealand business leader Chris Quin as its next CEO.

FSNI Chairman Peter Anderson says Chris Quin has the leadership skills and business experience to take the co-op into a new phase of excellence in meeting the needs of New Zealand shoppers.

“Chris is a Kiwi with the leadership qualities to take Foodstuffs North Island to the next level over the coming years. The co-op will be well-served by his people skills, track record in bringing teams together and growing substantial businesses.

“Chris understands the Kiwi consumer and the role of technology in serving them – these are essential ingredients in the changing landscape of grocery,” says Anderson.

Mr Quin has a twenty five year track record in leadership roles, primarily within the IT and telecommunications sector. Since 2012 he has been Chief Executive of the Home, Business and Mobile division of Spark NZ (previously Telecom NZ), serving Kiwi consumers and small businesses through call centres, online and a franchises network of 120 stores and business hubs.  Mr Quin resigned from Spark in January this year and finishes at the end of June, before commencing as CEO with Foodstuffs on 7 September.

“We undertook a global search and engaged with strong candidates from New Zealand, the UK, Europe and the US. After that rigorous process, the fact that the best person for the job is a Kiwi is a bonus and a credit to New Zealand business leaders,” says Anderson.

Chris Quin says he is delighted to join Foodstuffs North Island which employs more than 22,000 people.

“Foodstuffs is a highly respected co-op that has served New Zealanders for over 90 years.  I’m looking forward to rolling up my sleeves to learn a lot more about the unique world of grocery and working with the team and almost 350 store owners to create a fantastic experience for Kiwi shoppers,” says Quin.

Quin received a Sir Peter Blake Leadership Award in 2010 for his leadership achievements and contribution to the community.  He is chair of the business growth hub The Icehouse.

Anderson says the 2013 merger of the two former North Island Foodstuffs co-operatives to form FSNI is almost complete.  He praised the contribution of current FSNI Managing Director Murray Jordan who last year announced he would leave the business in mid-2015 to pursue professional board appointments.

“Murray has made a big difference to Foodstuffs over the past 11 years including increasing our sales and market share while implementing the merger at a time of considerable change.  It is a tribute to his leadership that we are now ready for new developments to benefit our customers, suppliers, staff and owner-operators.”

Murray Jordan will remain at the helm of FSNI until Chris Quin joins the co-op on 7 September.

About Foodstuffs North Island
The creation of Foodstuffs North Island Ltd (FSNI) on 1 September 2013 created a business of considerable size and scale. FSNI has more than 1,900 employees across its two support centres and eight distribution centres that service 98 New Worlds, 41 PAK’nSAVE’s and 203 Four Square stores. FSNI operates wholesale cash and carry operations to service the needs of the non-member trade community: hospitality and foodservice trades, dairies, service stations and business customers. These are: Gilmours (upper North Island) and Toops (lower North Island).  Overall the business employs more than 22,000 people making it one of the largest employers in the country.

FSNI covers the entire North Island, while Foodstuffs South Island Ltd covers the entire South Island. Each of the regional co-operatives is owned by its retail members, and operates independently with its own board and management. There are no common members or shareholders.

The two regional co-operatives jointly own Foodstuffs (NZ) Limited, a small non-trading entity, which plays a very important role in expanding the organisation’s profile, and in representing the two co-operatives’ interests on issues of national or grocery-specific importance. Employing more than 30,000 people nationwide, the two Foodstuffs co-ops are proudly 100% Kiwi owned and operated. And because we’re local we understand the needs of our communities, and strive to provide the best shopping experience possible for our customers.
