ShopRite celebrates the grand opening of its newest supermarket in Philadelphia

Philadelphia, PA, 2018-Mar-08 — /EPR Retail News/ — ShopRite today (March 05, 2018) announced the grand opening of its newest full-service supermarket in Philadelphia on Sunday, March 4. A special luncheon to introduce the new store to the community was held Feb. 28.

Located at 5597 Tulip St., the ShopRite of Bridge and Harbison will be operated by the Ammons family and their Ammons Supermarkets, LLC, which also owns the ShopRite of Aramingo Avenue and a ShopRite store in Mullica Hill, NJ. The family’s newest store offers a large selection of freshly prepared foods, organic products and popular store brands, along with a community room, café, and store dietitian. To mark the opening, the Ammons family presented a $10,000 donation to the Philabundance Food Bank during Wednesday’s community luncheon.

The store, which will serve as the anchor of the Shoppes at Wissinoming, will bring affordable fresh food and produce to an area with little access to full service supermarkets. Planning for the store began five years ago, before the city’s beverage tax was proposed by the mayor and enacted in January 2017. That tax has led to beverage sale losses of nearly 60 percent for grocery store and supermarket operators in the city.

“Despite the challenging business climate in the city since the beverage tax was implemented, our family made a decision to move forward with this new store and keep our commitment to the community. We are excited to open another great ShopRite and are confident that this new, full-service supermarket will become a destination location in the neighborhood,” said Peter Ammons, who works alongside his father, brother and sister in the family’s supermarkets.

Customers who visit the new store will see that commitment fulfilled. The state-of-the-art supermarket includes fresh bake and floral shops; a seafood department with fresh, daily deliveries; meat department with trained butchers, and a large selection of organic and popular store brands such as ShopRite’s Wholesome Pantry line. An on-site dietitian will also be available to offer free, one-on-one consultations, store tours and meal planning for customers.

The store itself is anchored with a large produce department and food court with grill, pizza station and custom bake shop. A conference room at the supermarket will also be available to civic groups for meetings.
ShopRite of Bridge & Harbison will employ close to 300 full- and part-time workers when it opens and the new shopping center and supermarket is expected to stimulate more investment in the community while giving local residents more healthy food options.

The store officially opened Sunday, March 4, at 6 a.m. and will operate seven days a week, from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.

ShopRite rolls out “Fuel Better” campaign to help customers discover better-for-you energy-rich foods and drinks

Customers looking to boost their energy, lose weight and eat healthier in the new year can discover new foods, recipes and ideas with the help of ShopRite’s dietitians

Keasbey, New Jersey, 2018-Jan-09 — /EPR Retail News/ — Shoppers looking for foods to help boost their energy in the new year have a valuable resource at their local ShopRite. The supermarket announced today that it has launched “Fuel Better,” a new campaign that provides customers with product and meal suggestions to help increase their energy levels throughout the day.

“Our customers tell us that they want to start the new year off by resolving to eat healthier, lose weight and feel more energetic, and we’re confident that our ‘Fuel Better’ campaign will help them achieve this,” says Natalie Menza-Crowe, RD, MS, director of Health and Wellness at ShopRite.

“Fuel Better,” which runs through the end of February, is the latest entry in ShopRite’s Well Everyday messaging program, a health and wellness-focused initiative launched last year as part of ShopRite’s commitment to providing free health and wellness services, inspiration and education to customers.

“We launched the ‘Fuel Better’ program to give our customers an easy and fun way to create small, achievable wellness goals – such as eating for energy – that can be sustained over the long term. It’s our way of showing customers that by enjoying a healthy balance of foods such as lean proteins, whole grain carbohydrates and heart-healthy fats, they can feel better and have more energy during the day,” says Menza-Crowe.

As part of the “Fuel Better” campaign, shoppers will have the opportunity to sample and discover better-for-you energy-rich foods and drinks while in the store. Shoppers can also receive free nutrition advice from the supermarket’s team of dietitians, who’ll be providing personalized suggestions on everything from fatigue-fighting snack choices to energy-boosting meal choices for breakfast, lunch and dinner. In addition, shoppers can visit ShopRite.com to access recipes featured in the campaign.

“Everyone wants to wake up in the morning feeling energized and ready to take on the day,” says Menza-Crowe. “With Fuel Better, we’re providing our shoppers with ideas, product suggestions and recipes that will help give them the healthy energy they need to feel great.”

As part of the eight-week campaign, shoppers can pick up a free “Fuel Better” recipe brochure at the office of their local in-store ShopRite dietitian (also available as a download on www.shoprite.com). The brochure includes ideas for energy-boosting foods such as Cheesy Stuffed Pepper Bowls, Walnut-Herb Chicken Roulade, and desserts such as Almond Butter Blondies and Sweet Potato Dessert Ravioli.

To see a complete list of events that ShopRite’s team of Registered Dietitians will be hosting in celebration of the “Fuel Better” campaign, visit ShopRite.com/health-events.

In addition to in-store events, the “Fuel Better” campaign features colorful signage throughout the store, directing consumers to energy-rich foods in the produce, seafood and center-store aisles. “Fuel Better” messaging will also appear on the supermarket’s website, social media channels, and in weekly circulars.

ShopRite puts the spotlight on its team of highly trained butchers

ShopRite puts the spotlight on its team of highly trained butchers

Keasbey, NJ, 2017-Dec-19 — /EPR Retail News/ — Every day, ShopRite butchers butterfly pork chops, thin slice chicken breasts, split steaks and custom grind cuts of meat, all to a customer’s taste. And this holiday season,  ShopRite is highlighting its team of highly trained butchers as in-house experts who can help customers make the most of holiday meals, whether barbecuing, roasting or stewing.

When it comes to the holidays – one of the busiest times of year for ShopRite’s meat departments – ShopRite stores take extra steps to ensure their customers are getting a premium service while saving them precious time. ShopRite butchers can help customers find the perfect size turkey for their guests, and shoppers can pre-order sausage for their stuffing or extra thighs and wings for gravy.

Special orders really ramp up in December, when many of the prime rib roasts in the meat case are loosened off the bone and hand-tied by ShopRite butchers who prepare the holiday roasts to meet increased demand.  Butchers are always available to take special orders and make suggestions on the best cuts of meat.

Few supermarkets offer both the expertise of in-store butchers and the guaranteed freshness of daily deliveries. But ShopRite offers both, with butcher service similar to the old-fashioned corner meat market.

ShopRite of Pearl River’s team of butchers in the ShopRite store in Pearl River, N.Y. has nearly 160 years of combined experience. It’s not uncommon for customers to ask for their favorite butcher at the ShopRite of Pearl River.

“Our ShopRite butchers provide great service with a real personal touch that our customers appreciate,” said ShopRite Pearl River Meat Manager Bill Scorzetti. “We want to give the best cut of meat to our customers because that means they will come back to us.”

Eighty-three-year-old Bernard Smith, who has worked at the Pearl River store for the last decade, stumbled into the trade more than 60 years ago when his mother wanted him to find a job. She got him a spot in a butcher shop in Manhattan and he never looked back.

“I love what I do, and I love working with customers. We take a lot of pride in our work,” said Smith, who is featured in a video on the ShopRite of Pearl River Facebook page.

At ShopRite of Hillsdale in Hillsdale, N.J., Tony Garcia, a third-generation butcher, also followed his family’s tradition in the trade.

“The first thing my dad said was, ‘You have to take care of the customer,” Garcia said. “That’s the key to the business. If you take care of the customer, you’ll be fine.”

The ShopRite of Hillsdale recently opened one the very first certified organic butcher service station in a supermarket. Butchers at the store will have the ability to prepare and custom cut organic beef, poultry and pork on a USDA-certified counter dedicated to organic food preparation.

More shoppers today are seeking grass-fed, organic, and pasture raised meats. ShopRite, which has expanded organic and natural sections in the meat department, also recently introduced Farm Promise, a line of beef and pork products that comes from family-owned farms in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and upstate New York.

ShopRite stores were also recognized recently for being a top seller of high quality Certified Angus Beef (CAB), meeting strict standards for marbling, tenderness, appearance and taste when it comes to the CAB label.

Whether it’s seasoned burgers for shoppers needing a quick dinner solution, grass-fed, paleo-friendly meats, or the perfect roast for a holiday dinner, ShopRite’s butchers are committed to providing a robust selection, great service and the finest, freshest meat that’s really a cut above the rest.

Huggies and ShopRite donated half a million diapers to National Diaper Bank Network

Keasbey, New Jersey, 2017-Nov-13 — /EPR Retail News/ — Huggies and ShopRite donated half a million diapers to kick off the holiday giving season on Monday, November 6.

That’s when ShopRite and Huggies delivered 250,000 diapers to the Community FoodBank of New Jersey — a member of the National Diaper Bank Network. Another 250,000 diapers will be donated to the National Diaper Bank Network through a Philadelphia area food bank. Huggies and ShopRite also presented the National Diaper Bank Network with a $10,000 check.

Huggies and ShopRite teamed up this summer to support struggling families in diaper need by on a program to benefit the National Diaper Bank Network. Huggies and ShopRite donated a day’s worth of diapers (or six diapers) each time a customer purchased one package of Huggies diapers at ShopRite stores over the last few months.

According to a study commissioned by Huggies and the National Diaper Bank Network, one in three American families struggles to afford the diapers needed to keep their baby clean, dry, and healthy. To help raise awareness of the hidden consequence of poverty known as “diaper need,” and provide much needed baby essentials to families, ShopRite partnered with Huggies on its No Baby Unhugged program.

As the founding sponsor of the National Diaper Bank Network since 2011, Huggies No Baby Unhugged has provided ongoing support for the organization and donated more than 200 million diapers and baby wipes, including critical donations during times of crisis. ShopRite donated $50,000 to the American Red Cross and 100,000 bottles of water to Puerto Rico

ShopRite donated $50,000 to the American Red Cross and 100,000 bottles of water to Puerto Rico

Keasbey, NJ, 2017-Oct-16 — /EPR Retail News/ — ShopRite this month donated $50,000 to the American Red Cross and 100,000 bottles of water to hurricane ravaged Puerto Rico, and last month a ShopRite tractor-trailer loaded with supplies was dispatched to the Houston Food Bank to help Hurricane Harvey victims in Texas.

In the wake of three devastating hurricanes affecting Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico, ShopRite is supporting several relief efforts to help people rebuild their lives. Working with trusted partners like the Community FoodBank of New Jersey and the American Red Cross, ShopRite has donated $100,000 in supplies and funds while ShopRite associates volunteered their time, talent and resources to make a difference in communities that are hurting.

After Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico on Sept. 20, ShopRite reached out to its network of charity partners who were consulting with disaster relief agencies on the ground to assess the situation and determine what goods were most needed on the battered island.

ShopRite worked with the Community FoodBank of New Jersey to deliver 50 pallets of water to Newark Airport, where a United Airlines plane was ready to deliver the water to hard hit San Juan, Puerto Rico. ShopRite’s Transportation team also sent truck drivers to Puerto Rico to help with the difficult process of food and water delivery on the island.

“We have real experience in supporting communities in times of crisis. It’s part of a long tradition of community commitment at ShopRite and we are proud to be able to support the latest relief efforts in Puerto Rico and other areas hit hard by hurricanes this season,” said Christine Magyarits, ShopRite’s community relations manager.

The ability to tap a supply chain of warehouses and fleet of trucks enables ShopRite to respond to crises with targeted action.

On Sept. 10, ShopRite sent a tractor-trailer filled with food and supplies – everything from granola bars and protein packets to toothpaste, shampoo and diapers – to the Houston Food Bank to help victims of Hurricane Harvey in Texas. Several associates, pictured right, volunteered to drive the truck to Houston. Many of the family-owned ShopRite stores across six states in the northeast are also supporting locally-organized hurricane relief efforts in the communities where those stores operate.

Pantene Care Beyond Hair Tour at the ShopRite kicks off; people can donate their hair to benefit women with cancer

Keasbey, NJ, 2017-Oct-06 — /EPR Retail News/ — ShopRite is partnering with Pantene® for its Care Beyond Hair Tour, exclusively at ShopRite, to donate hair and raise funds for Pantene Beautiful Lengths Fund, a program created in partnership with the American Cancer Society to provide free, real-hair wigs to women who have lost their hair due to cancer treatment. From Oct. 3 – Nov. 16, the Care Beyond Hair Tour will make stops at close to 40 ShopRite stores throughout New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania, offering a way for people to share their strength and donate their hair to the Beautiful Lengths Fund.

Each tour stop will feature a pop-up styling station staffed with an onsite beautician, allowing girls, women and men to donate their hair for the creation of real-hair wigs that will be distributed to women battling cancer, with the goal of 200 haircuts to create 25 wigs. For every hair donation, Pantene will pledge an additional $50 to the Pantene Beautiful Lengths Fund, up to $10,000.

Campaign ambassador Tiki Barber officially kicked off the Pantene Care Beyond Hair Tour at the ShopRite of Greater Morristown on Tuesday, Oct. 3, sharing his personal experiences in dealing with his mother’s breast cancer battle and encouraging donations to the campaign.

“We are honored to partner with Pantene for the Care Beyond Hair Tour,” said Cathy Magistrelli, vice president of health and beauty care at ShopRite. “ShopRite is committed to giving back and supporting key causes, and we understand the great physical and emotional toll cancer takes on women battling the disease. With support from our generous customers and great team of associates, we hope that we can make a difference through this campaign to create real-hair wigs for people fighting cancer.

The Beautiful Lengths Fund was started in 2006 with the goal of making it simple and possible for women everywhere to share their hair with women who have lost theirs during cancer treatment. Since the program’s inception, 46,000 real-hair wigs have been donated to the national American Cancer Society Wig Bank, helping serve those in need every single day. ShopRite customers who donated their hair at the ShopRite of Greater Morristown posed for a photo, right, with retired football player and star running back Tiki Barber.

“We’re so thankful to ShopRite for its support of the Pantene Beautiful Lengths Fund through our partnership for Care Beyond Hair” said Robert Stetts, marketing manager with P&G. “This program allows us to help women going through grueling cancer treatments to feel a little bit more like themselves every day and inspire the confidence needed to keep fighting. We are so grateful to our generous donors who continue to make the creation of these wigs possible, and we look forward to successful campaign for a great cause.”

ShopRite and Huggies partner to donate half-million diapers to the National Diaper Bank Network

Keasbey, NJ, 2017-Aug-28 — /EPR Retail News/ — ShopRite is partnering with the Huggies Brand on a plan to donate up to a half-million diapers to the National Diaper Bank Network, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing diapers to babies in need.

ShopRite and Huggies will donate a day’s worth of diapers to the National Diaper Bank Network each time a customer purchases any size Huggies diapers at ShopRite stores or online, through ShopRite’s mobile app and ShopRite from Home service. Qualifying purchase periods run now through Sept. 2, and again from Sept. 24 through Oct. 7.

According to a study commissioned by Huggies, one in three American families struggles to afford the diapers needed to keep their baby clean, dry, and healthy. “Since 2010, our No Baby Unhugged program has donated more than 200 million diapers and wipes to families in need, and yet there is still more to be done,” said Eleonora Daireaux, vice president of Huggies North America. “We are excited to partner with ShopRite and the National Diaper Bank Network to help raise awareness for this issue, and donate up to half a million diapers to provide families with the resources they need to care for their babies.”

Customers will find Huggies diapers on sale in ShopRite stores this week and next week as part of the promotion. For more details on the National Diaper Bank Network, please visit www.nationaldiaperbanknetwork.org.

ShopRite opens store in Country Pointe Plainview, NY

Plainview, NY, 2017-Jul-31 — /EPR Retail News/ — Local leaders and ShopRite today (July 27, 2017) cut the ribbon on a state-of-the-art supermarket, the ShopRite of Country Pointe. The 68,000-square-foot supermarket also serves as a retail anchor for Country Pointe Plainview, a development that will include a mix of housing and retail shops when complete.

Located at 1675 Old Country Road in Plainview, the full-service ShopRite store is owned and operated by the Greenfield family, third- and fourth- generation grocers who own four other ShopRites on Long Island.  The family’s newest store offers a prepared foods department with restaurant-quality meals and a café along with a large selection of fresh produce, organic, gluten-free, local and Kosher products at ShopRite’s everyday low prices.

“We are thrilled to open another ShopRite store on Long Island, this time as the supermarket anchor at the innovative development Country Pointe Plainview. We are a family business and we are excited to be part of this great new development and the larger family at Country Pointe,” said Seth Greenfield, who often works alongside his dad, Jon, in the family’s ShopRite stores.

Visitors to the store will find fresh bake and floral shops; a seafood department stocked with daily deliveries and a meat department staffed with trained butchers. Customers can also take advantage of the full-service pharmacy and an in-store dietitian who will be available to offer free, one-on-one consultations, store tours or meal planning to customers. The new ShopRite will also include a kosher bakery and separate kosher meat, deli and prepared food departments under the supervision of KOF- K Kosher Certification.

“ShopRite has been a pillar of the Plainview community for 45 years. We are delighted a new, state-of-the-art ShopRite will be our supermarket anchor at The Shops at Country Pointe Plainview for years and generations to come,” said Michael Dubb, founder and CEO of The Beechwood Organization, developer of the residential lifestyle community Country Pointe Plainview.

Joseph Saladino, supervisor for the Town of Oyster Bay; Arnold Drucker, District 16 Legislator in Nassau County, and Oyster Bay Councilman Louis Imbroto also attended Thursday’s ribbon cutting and recognized the Greenfield family and ShopRite for their longtime commitment to the community.

With an emphasis on reducing its eco-footprint, the new store incorporates energy efficient refrigeration and LED lighting throughout.  Customers will also find self-checkout lanes, wider aisles and freshly prepared meals including sushi, salad and olive bars, made-to-order sandwiches, international cheeses, and a café with seating and free Wi-Fi access.

ShopRite launches in-store campaign “Go H2O” to help customers stay hydrated this summer

Supermarket Program Helps Shoppers Stay Healthy and Hydrated All Season Long

KEASBEY, NJ, 2017-Jul-28 — /EPR Retail News/ — With summer heat advisories on the rise, consumers are continually searching for ways to keep cool and hydrated during the hot summer months.  With this in mind, ShopRite has announced the launch of “Go H2O,” an in-store campaign aimed at helping consumers find easy, delicious and unique ways to stay hydrated during the dog days of summer.

“Staying properly hydrated is so important to our overall wellbeing, especially during the summer when we tend to spend more time outdoors and run the risk of becoming dehydrated,” says Natalie Menza-Crowe, RD, MS, director of Health and Wellness at ShopRite. “Our new Go H20 campaign is all about educating shoppers on ways they can take advantage of our entire array of healthy beverages, water-rich fruits and vegetables. Plus, by consuming a variety of fluids, fruits and vegetables, shoppers can hydrate and fuel up with essential vitamins, minerals, electrolytes, and carbohydrates, at the same time.”

While young children and the elderly are particularly susceptible to the hazards of dehydration, experts advise that everyone should aim to fill up on fluids and water-rich foods during the hot summer months.  Extreme dehydration can cause possible medical issues such as heat exhaustion and, in some cases, heat stroke.

“Some of the hydrating products we are featuring might be items that everyone knows and loves, like watermelon, which is 92% water,” says Menza-Crowe, “But other products might be more surprising. For instance, we are highlighting drinks like unsweetened coconut waters and flavored seltzers, and suggesting other solutions, such as enjoying the ease of using frozen or canned vegetables and fruits, to stay satiated and hydrated.”

Officially set to launch on July 23, “Go H2O” is the latest entry into ShopRite’s Well Everyday themed initiative. The eight week campaign features fun colorful signage throughout the store, as well as messaging in the supermarket’s website, social media channels, and weekly circulars.

As part of the Go H2O program, ShopRite’s team of Registered Dietitians will be hosting in-store events and activities, plus offering recipes to drive home the message about the importance of staying hydrated during the season.  To see a complete list of events, visit here: http://www.shoprite.com/health-events/

WALLINGFORD, CONN., 2017-Jul-27 — /EPR Retail News/ — The Connecticut Food Bank welcomed representatives from Price Rite and ShopRite stores to celebrate the food bank’s 20-year partnership with ShopRite and Price Rite — a relationship that has helped provide 8.4 million meals to hungry Connecticut residents.

The food bank honored the store owners and leadership teams with a celebration lunch on Thursday, July 20, at the Connecticut Food Bank Wallingford headquarters and distribution center.

Beaudreau said combined ShopRite and Price Rite store and corporate donations to the Connecticut Food Bank since 1998 amounted to more than 1.22 million pounds of food and $4.3 million in funding. “These donations have provided 8.4 million meals for residents facing hunger in Connecticut,” Beaudreau added.

Thursday’s lunch included a formal recognition and an opportunity for the guests to tour the food bank. “We want our partners to know how much we appreciate their generosity and to see the care and efficiency with which we use their donations,” Beaudreau said.

New Jersey Department of Agriculture Secretary Douglas H. Fisher visits ShopRite as part of his Jersey Fresh tour

New Jersey Department of Agriculture Secretary Douglas H. Fisher visits ShopRite as part of his Jersey Fresh tour

TRENTON, 2017-Jul-27 — /EPR Retail News/ — New Jersey Department of Agriculture Secretary Douglas H. Fisher on Friday completed Part One of his Jersey Fresh tour to highlight the many varieties of produce now available at the peak of growing season. Secretary Fisher visited the ShopRite of Greater Morristown in Morris County on Thursday and then visited Larchmont Farms in Salem County on Friday.

“We are at the height of Jersey Fresh season and our farmers are providing outstanding product to consumers,” Secretary Fisher said. “The partnerships with ShopRite and other supermarkets help us deliver outstanding quality fruits and vegetables throughout the state.

Like all of the 140 ShopRite stores in New Jersey, the ShopRite of Greater Morristown features a wide range of Jersey Fresh fruits and vegetables. They include blueberries, peppers, sweet corn, cucumbers, spinach, lettuce, peaches and others. Many of those items come from Tranquillity Farms in Sussex County, which supplies more than 20 supermarkets with its more than 800 acres of produce.

“We are really proud of our partnership with the Jersey Fresh growers who provide our stores with delicious fresh fruits and vegetables. Our family owned and operated ShopRite stores have a long tradition of working with local family farms and food producers, and our partnership with Jersey Fresh is a natural extension of this commitment,” said Nicholas Sumas, a third-generation grocer and Chief Marketing Officer of Village Super Market, Inc., which owns the ShopRite of Greater Morristown. “Customers have become increasingly interested in sourcing their food locally and supporting neighborhood businesses, so we’re expanding our Locally Grown program by working hand-in-hand with family farms to provide even more locally grown and sourced foods.”

Fisher also visited the ShopRite of Parsipanny Thursday, above, to sample produce and talk with staff at the store.

Plenty of fresh peaches are available and one of the places to find them is Larchmont Farms in Upper Pittsgrove. Larchmont Farms is a twelfth-generation farm owned by Tom Dunn and Charles and Keith Haines. It is located on more than 900 acres and has a reputation for delivering high quality peaches and other fruits.

“We are having a wonderful year with peaches,” said Keith Haines. “We have a very good supply and they are also tasting great. The weather has been just right for us and that’s always a key element in growing any crop.”

Larchmont Farms is also environmentally friendly, with the entire farm running on solar power and all of its fruit is packed into boxes that were made from 100 percent recycled paper.

“Larchmont Farms is a great example of why it’s important to support our local farmers. They take pride in what they do in order to grow the best quality produce,” noted Fisher.

New Jersey is one of the nation’s top growers of peaches, ranking sixth in the U.S. in production value in 2016 at $28.4 million. The 2017 New Jersey peach crop is projected to produce between 55 and 60 million pounds of peaches on 5,500 acres, according to the New Jersey Peach Promotion Council.

The peach season is well underway throughout the state. The first peach variety of New Jersey’s season is Sentry, followed by the Gala, Flavorcrest, Loring and Red Haven varieties. Next is the John Boy season followed by the Crest Haven, Gloria, Jersey Queen and Fayette varieties. The Encore and Laurol varieties wrap up the state’s peach season in mid- to late-September. White peaches are expected to begin shipping around the end of July and continue through mid-September.

Look for Jersey Fresh peaches in your local supermarkets, farmers markets and roadside stands. You can find what is available and where to buy Jersey Fresh items at www.jerseyfresh.nj.gov.

ShopRite highlights their commitment in protecting the planet in celebration of Earth Day

ShopRite highlights their commitment in protecting the planet in celebration of Earth Day

Keasbey, NJ, 2017-Apr-18 — /EPR Retail News/ — ShopRite stores are going beyond the supermarket aisle to highlight their commitment to protecting the planet in celebration of Earth Day, and ShopRite is encouraging consumers to get involved. ShopRite applies sustainable solutions in an effort to shrink its environmental footprint – a pledge to local communities that has spanned four decades – and ShopRite stores today operate more efficiently, donate more fresh food and compost and recycle more than ever.

ShopRite’s Earth Day Challenge
To enourage customers to get involved, ShopRite conducts an “Earth Day Challenge” each April, providing complimentary cleanup kits – including essentials like gloves and garbage bags – to volunteers interested in beautifying their communities. The program makes it easy for participants to clear litter from beaches or spruce up local parks, and helped spark 6,000 volunteers to participate in community clean-ups at 130 locations across five states in 2016. Since the program’s inception, over 40,000 participants have taken part in ShopRite’s “Earth Day Challenge.” Those interested in receiving a kit can call 1-800-ShopRite for more information.

ShopRite’s Sustainability Stats
ShopRite’s environmentally-friendly practices have produced some impressive results:

  • Over the past 40 years, ShopRite stores have recycled two million tons of material
  • In 2016, ShopRite stores recycled 143,965 tons of waxed and corrugated cardboard; 3,883 tons of plastics; 983 tons of newspaper; 281 tons of office paper; and 57 tons of metal
  • ShopRite composted more than 21,000 tons of food waste in 2016

ShopRite’s Reduce-Reuse-Recycle Formula
ShopRite’s passion for the environment begins from the ground up, with stores designed to help reduce energy and water consumption through the use of energy-efficient glass doors on its refrigerated and freezer cases, conservation lighting and low-flow faucets.

ShopRite also works hard to eliminate food waste, and its stores use a variety of approaches to make this a focal point. ShopRite implements composting and donates to local food banks as part of its food recovery efforts – fighting hunger in the communities where our stores operate while reducing environmental impacts.

ShopRite’s recycling programs also help limit the amount of trash that ends up in landfills. ShopRite operates its own recycling center in Elizabeth, NJ, and provides plastic bag recycling bins at the front of each store to encourage customers to return bags used during previous shopping trips. This spring ShopRite stores are also carrying reusable bags with a special Earth Day message.

Over 100 in-store “Green Teams” – groups of associates who voluntarily work together to make ShopRite stores more sustainable – also dedicate time to finding the best ways to conserve the environment and cultivate partnerships with environmental organizations to come together to improve the environment.

ShopRite partners with 25 different environmental organizations, and ShopRite supermarkets have been recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency for their sustainability efforts by receving the EPA’s Food Recovery Challenge awards for reducing food waste and increasing fresh food donations. In addition, more and more ShopRite stores are receiving Grocery Stewardship Certification (GSC), the nation’s first and only grocery sustainability certification program, which increases employee engagement and provides store Green Teams with ideas to become more eco-friendly.

ShopRite associates to be featured on special-edition Cheerios boxes for their work in helping raise $1.4 million to fight hunger

ShopRite associates to be featured on special-edition Cheerios boxes for their work in helping raise $1.4 million to fight hunger

MEDFORD, NJ, 2017-Mar-10 — /EPR Retail News/ — ShopRite customers may see some familiar faces on Cheerios boxes when they visit ShopRite stores this month.  ShopRite associates will appear on the back of limited-edition Cheerios boxes for their work in helping raise $1.4 million to fight hunger.

The associates earned those spots after joining thousands of other ShopRite associates last September in a friendly competition sponsored by ShopRite and General Mills, the annual ShopRite Partners In Caring Cheerios Contest.  With this year’s contest theme,Fighting hunger from the heart – together we can make a difference, serving as backdrop, ShopRite associates collected donations at check-out and held events in stores to raise awareness and money to fight hunger.

The month-long fundraising effort by ShopRite associates raised $1.4 million to support regional food banks in communities served by ShopRite stores, and now ShopRite and General Mills are recognizing that dedication and hard work with a prized spot on a special-edition Cheerios box.

Each of the 40 winning ShopRite stores chose two ShopRite associates to be featured on the iconic Cheerios box. The customized cereal boxes, sold exclusively at ShopRite, will be unveiled at in-store celebrations during the month of March. Each winning store will also receive prize money ($3,000 for the top five stores, and $500 for the remaining winning stores) that will be presented to local food pantries chosen by the respective store teams.

“The ShopRite associates featured on this year’s Cheerios box are passionate about fighting hunger and helping people in need in the communities where our ShopRite stores operate. And our associates know that working together as a team to raise money and awareness is the most effective way to make a difference,” said Christine Magyarits, spokesperson for ShopRite Partners In Caring. “Since 1999, $43 million has been donated to local food banks through the ShopRite Partners In Caring program. The Cheerios contest is one of our favorite annual events and highlights our ‘partners’ in the fight against hunger, including our dedicated ShopRite associates, our generous customers, and General Mills, a longtime vendor partner who shares our passion for helping those in need of food assistance.”

David Zallie and his wife Renee, owners and operators of the ShopRite of Medford, above, hosted a special Cheerios box unveiling ceremony at the store on March 8. Their store was the top fund-raising store in this year’s contest.

ShopRite of Medford is among the top 40 winning stores, and selected Jodi Lattiere of Clementon, Beth Ann Peterson of Medford and Susan Schembri of Medford to be featured on 150,000 special-edition Cheerios boxes. LPGA awarded ShopRite with the distinguished Commissioner’s Award

ShopRite Receives Prestigious Commissioner’s Award from the LPGA

Naples, FL, 2016-Nov-21 — /EPR Retail News/ — The LPGA awarded ShopRite with the distinguished Commissioner’s Award during the tour’s season-ending Rolex Awards banquet on Thursday night in Naples, Fla. In 2016, ShopRite celebrated its 25th year as a supporter of the LPGA and the ShopRite LPGA Classic Presented by Acer. During that tenure, ShopRite has donated more than $30 million through its association with the LPGA, more than any other sponsor in the history of the tour.

The Commissioner’s Award was introduced in 1991 by the LPGA. It annually honors a person or organization that has contributed uniquely to the LPGA and its members, furthered the cause of women’s golf, and possesses character and standards of the highest order.

“We’re proud to recognize ShopRite for lifting the LPGA to new heights for 25 years and counting,” said LPGA Commissioner Mike Whan. “They are our longest partner in tournament business and one of our greatest charitable supporters. We’re honored to be associated with a company that has worked so tirelessly as an advocate of its community and women’s golf.”

ShopRite became title sponsor of the Atlantic City Classic in 1992, seeking to strengthen its ties to the New Jersey community as it broadened its footprint throughout the mid-Atlantic region. ShopRite is now the LPGA’s longest-tenured sponsor, and the ShopRite LPGA Classic Presented by Acer is the second longest running tournament on the LPGA.

“ShopRite is honored to receive the Commissioner’s Award and proud to be part of a long tradition of promoting women’s golf,” said Jeff Reagan, senior vice president of marketing for Wakefern Food Corp., the marketing and distribution arm of ShopRite.  “As title sponsor of the 2017 ShopRite LPGA Classic Presented by Acer, we once again get to be part of a world class golfing event that also benefits local schools, hospitals and other organizations that help those in need. We look forward to seeing some of the best female golfers in the world hit the links again this spring at Stockton Seaview Hotel and Golf Club.”

ShopRite is the fifteenth recipient of the Commissioner’s Award, joining PING founders Karsten and Louise Solheim, longtime tournament host and actor Jamie Farr, and the original 13 LPGA founding members.

ShopRite of Newark to train 21 students as part of Mayor Ras J. Baraka’s Summer Youth Employment program

Newark, New Jersey, 2016-Jul-11 — /EPR Retail News/ — The 21 students who will work in the ShopRite of Newark this summer as part of Mayor Ras J. Baraka’s Summer Youth Employment program will train with mentors and rotate through different departments as they prepare for potential careers in retail.

There are so many different parts to the supermarket business –- everything from customer service to merchandising, inventory control, food service, logistics, communications and health and wellness — and we look forward to teaching young people about those industry opportunities, Jerry Manley, director of operations for the ShopRite of Newark, told those who gathered for the press conference Wednesday at City Hall.

“We also hope to share our enthusiasm and love for the business with young people, because we also think it’s important to inspire people to do what they are passionate about,” added Manley.

“This is vastly more than giving kids a paycheck and keeping them off the street for the summer,” noted Mayor Baraka. “We are preparing our youth for success in college and in the workplace and teaching them life skills to help them thrive in whatever career they choose.”

A total of 2,700 young people will be employed in Newark this summer through the Summer Youth Employment Program, a unique public private partnership between local businesses, universities, hospitals and banks. The mayor’s Summer Youth Employment Program was also recognized by the White House as one of 16 Summer Impact Hubs programs in the country.

ShopRite to participate in Whole Grain Sampling Day on Wednesday, March 30, 2016

Keasbey, NJ, 2016-Mar-28 — /EPR Retail News/ — ShopRite is pleased to announce they will be participating in Whole Grain Sampling Day, an annual event organized by the Whole Grains Council to educate consumers about the nutritional benefits of whole grains. The event is scheduled to take place at select ShopRite locations on Wednesday, March 30, 2016.

“We’ve always known that whole grains are an important and delicious part of a balanced diet,” says Natalie Menza, Manager of Health and Wellness at ShopRite, the largest supermarket cooperative in the country with more than 250 stores in the northeast. “We’re really excited that this day gives us the opportunity to not only inspire our customers about all the great whole grains that are available, but also helps shoppers discover unique ways to incorporate healthy grains into their favorite recipes.”

For those unable to attend a Whole Grain Sampling Day event, the ShopRite Health and Wellness team has compiled some easy suggestions on how to incorporate more whole grains into your diet:

  • Add brown rice, barley or quinoa to soup or chili. This adds excellent texture as well as makes the meal more filling and hearty.
  • Use as a salad topping.  Most people think of vegetables, meat and croutons as salad toppings but grains such as rice pilaf, quinoa salad, tabbouleh, or farro make a great addition to any salad.
  • Use oats instead of breadcrumbs. Try using rolled oats in place of breadcrumbs in your meatballs or burger recipes.
  • Have popcorn as a snack. Yes, popcorn is a whole grain! Aim for air popped popcorn to cut down on fat and sodium and have a delicious high fiber snack.
  • Try using half whole wheat flour, half white flour in your baked goods. Breads, pancakes, muffins, cookies can all be done with half wheat flour and will still taste great!

To find a ShopRite store hosting a Whole Grain Sampling Day event near you, visit http://www.shoprite.com/health-events/

ShopRite will once again host The Grand Tasting Presented by ShopRite at the Food Network New York City Wine & Food Festival

Specialty Products Available Exclusively at ShopRite Stores Featured in Premier Food Festival

Keasbey, NJ, 2015-10-8 — /EPR Retail News/ — Now in its eighth year as a presenting sponsor, ShopRite will once again host The Grand Tasting Presented by ShopRite at the Food Network New York City Wine & Food Festival.

Open to the public on October 17 & 18 and located at Pier 94 at 55th Street and West Side Highway, the 130,000 square foot culinary wonderland is the centerpiece of the Festival each year. ShopRite chefs will feature a sampling of original recipes using ingredients and special edition products found exclusively at ShopRite stores. This year’s event will showcase ShopRite Kitchen entrées, which are packaged in the perfect sizes to take home and call your own. Samplings of these new products, on their own and as the focal point of unique original dishes, will be available for tasting at the ShopRite booth, which is centrally located on Pier 94.

In addition to ShopRite’s offerings, attendees will have the opportunity to meet the greatest food stars in the country and sample food from local New York City restaurants, representing cuisine from around the world, all paired with premier wine and spirits.

In addition to its celebration of food and drink, the focus of the festival once again is the fight against hunger. Proceeds from the event will benefit hunger relief initiatives through the Food Bank for New York City and Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry Campaign. The New York City Wine & Food Festival is hosted by The Food Network, Food &Wine and Travel and Leisure magazines. To date, the Festival has raised more than $8.5 million to help fight hunger.< ShopRite customers who present their Price Plus Club Card at checkout will receive a 10% discount on tickets to the event purchased at http://www.nycwff.org. The Grand Tasting also offers ticket-holders the opportunity to meet members of ShopRite’s Potluck blogger panel, and share recipes and cooking tips. Potluck is a community of writers on ShopRite.com that posts recipes, reviews and cooking demonstrations using ShopRite Private Label products. Potluck bloggers share their unique perspectives on new products, food, cooking and shopping with their fellow ShopRite customers. About ShopRite

About the Food Network New York City Wine & Food Festival presented by FOOD & WINE
After seven successful years, the Food Network & Cooking Channel New York City Wine & Food Festival presented by FOOD & WINE (NYCWFF) is gearing up to once again pay homage to one of the greatest dining cities in the world while fighting to end hunger! It is the only Festival in New York to bring together both legendary culinary icons from around the globe and America’s most beloved television chefs.  NYCWFF began as a one-night event, SWEET, in the fall of 2007. In 2008, Festival Founder and Director, Lee Brian Schrager (Vice President, Corporate Communications & National Events at Southern Wine & Spirits of America) launched the inaugural NYCWFF that has quickly grown to mirror the success of its sister Festival, the Food Network & Cooking Channel South Beach Wine & Food Festival presented by FOOD & WINE.  The 2015 Festival will once again bring together the world’s greatest chefs, winemakers, spirits producers and personalities to educate palates and entertain attendees in high style.
