Staples funds all 158 projects on DonorsChoose.org in Cleveland with $87,813 donation

Staples Helps Cleveland Teachers Create Positive Classroom Experiences

CLEVELAND, 2017-Aug-22 — /EPR Retail News/ — Staples, Inc. (NASDAQ: SPLS) announced today (Aug. 21, 2017) that all 158 projects posted by teachers on DonorsChoose.org in Cleveland received full funding as part of Staples’s $1 million donation to DonorsChoose.org, a charity that has funded more than 900,000 classroom projects for teachers and has positively affected more than 28 million U.S. students.

As part of the Staples for Students program, Staples continues to support education and promote positive classroom experiences across the country this back-to-school season. Staples funded the balance of all 158 projects listed on DonorsChoose.org in Cleveland. With a donation of $87,813, Staples impacted 128 teachers and more than 8,000 students in the community.

For example, students in Mrs. Saxon’s class at Nathan Hale Elementary School will receive ecology demonstration kits to construct viable ecosystems.

“We’re so excited to be working with Lady Gaga, DonorsChoose.org and Born This Way Foundation to help U.S. teachers have what they need for a great school year,” said Michelle Bottomley, chief marketing officer, Staples. “Staples is a longtime supporter of education and, and we know there’s a burden placed on teachers to ensure that their classrooms are stocked with the materials and activities they need to spark kid’s learning. We are committed to supporting teachers through DonorsChoose.org and encourage others to fund a classroom project this year so teachers and kids go all-out in reaching their full potential or donate in one of our stores.”

Lady Gaga and Staples collaborated to create a public service announcement that is currently airing nationwide, further increasing visibility around the need to celebrate and support teachers and students. Earlier in the summer, Staples also donated $1 million to Born This Way Foundation, which Lady Gaga co-founded with her mother, Cynthia Germanotta, to support positive classroom experiences.

“Staples has been a steadfast supporter of DonorsChoose.org for years, and we’re so thankful for its continued support,” said Charles Best, founder of DonorsChoose.org. “Staples’s million-dollar donation to DonorsChoose.org ensures that hundreds of teachers, including many in Cleveland, will be able to bring learning to life for their students.”

Driven by an insight from the Education Market Association that an estimated 99.5 percent of all public school teachers use their own money to equip their classrooms, often at a cost of more than $400 per year, Staples takes great pride in helping to alleviate some of the pressure placed upon teachers.

Those who wish to support teachers and students nationwide can make a donation either in Staples stores or online at www.StaplesForStudents.org. To help create a positive classroom experience, post an act of kindness on the Staples for Students Kindness Tree created with Born This Way Foundation.

Staples announces robotic material handling solution for their fulfillment centers powered by Great Star

Cutting Edge Technology to be Used within Staples’ Network of Fulfillment Centers

FRAMINGHAM, Mass., 2017-Jul-22 — /EPR Retail News/ — Staples, Inc. (NASDAQ – SPLS) announced today (Jul. 20, 2017) the development of a cutting edge, robotic material handling solution for their fulfillment centers powered by Great Star Industrial USA, LLC (“Great Star”). The technology combines separate solutions for picking items with high cubic velocity and low cubic velocity into a first of its kind robust, integrated solution.

Unlike other systems in the market today, the automated robotic storage and retrieval system incorporates two types of automated guided vehicles (AGVs) into a unified system that brings both high and low cubic velocity items to a single pick and pack station, requiring less capital investment than traditional material handling systems while increasing productivity and picking accuracy.

The AGV used for picking items with a low cubic velocity, commonly known as “Goods to Person” technology, is adaptable to pick from existing industry wide storage mediums and can retrieve up to five unique items per trip, lowering capital and drastically reducing robot tasks and travel. Items with high cubic velocity are picked with AGVs that replace traditional manual pick carts, redefining “Person to Goods” technology. The new system enables “Goods to Person” pick cells to be fed by multiple AGV’s simultaneously, eliminating idle time for the order picker. AGVs can place products directly into the pick cell and then leave for other tasks, increasing AGV utilization.

“With Staples and Great Star each leveraging their strengths in design, engineering, and supply chain operations, we’ve rapidly gone from concept to production with a robotic solution that is truly ground breaking,” said Mike Bhaskaran, Staples’ Chief Supply Chain Officer. “It incorporates concepts that have never been used before. In addition to rolling it out across the Staples’ network of fulfillment centers, we’re excited for its potential applications beyond these facilities.”

Staples has already started to utilize the new system in one of its key fulfillment centers and is targeting to have the solution implemented across their entire network over the next 24 months.

“This solution will be transformational for the industry,” said Lily Chi, Executive Vice President of Great Star. “It offers a high degree of flexibility and capability that will provide a cost-effective solution for almost any order fulfillment and warehousing operation.”

Staples unveils new public service announcement starring music icon Lady Gaga to promote kindness in school

Staples Announces $2 Million in Donations to DonorsChoose.org and Born This Way Foundation

FRAMINGHAM, Mass., 2017-Jul-04 — /EPR Retail News/ — Staples, Inc. (NASDAQ: SPLS) is building on its long-standing commitment of supporting education with the reveal today (Jun. 28, 2017) of a new public service announcement (PSA) starring music icon Lady Gaga.

Making its debuts on StaplesforStudents.org, the PSA features the call to action to promote kindness in school and support teachers with the resources they need for a successful classroom.

The PSA highlights DonorsChoose.org – a charity that has helped donors fund more than 25,000 classroom projects for teachers that have positively affected more than 23 million students across the country – and Born This Way Foundation, which was founded by Lady Gaga and her mother, Cynthia Germanotta, to support the wellness of young people and empower them to create a kinder and braver world.

Driven by several sobering statistics, Staples and Lady Gaga have teamed up to promote kindness in schools across the country and ensure that teachers and students have the resources they need for successful classroom learning. According to a report by Sesame Workshop, 86% of teachers (and 70% of parents) admit to worrying often that the world is an unkind place for children. Further, the Education Market Association reports that an estimated 99.5% of public school teachers use their own money to equip their classrooms – frequently at a cost of more than $400 per year.

In support of this mission, Staples also announced that it is making $1 million donations to both DonorsChoose.org and Born This Way Foundation.

“We’re thrilled to team up with Lady Gaga, Born This Way Foundation and DonorsChoose.org to support education and positive classroom experiences nationwide,” said Frank Bifulco, chief marketing officer, Staples. “There’s a correlation between kindness and overall well-being among students, and we’ll work together to create an environment for students that will allow them to flourish and propel them into their bright futures.”

Making of the PSA

The Staples for Students PSA with Lady Gaga was fully created by Madison + Vine and airs nationwide for the back-to-school season.

“What made this such a rewarding project was having all parties — Staples, Lady Gaga and our creative team — come together for a common goal of building more positive classroom experiences, while also telling an emotional story that people would be inspired to share and pass on. And we feel we really achieved that,” said James Shani, CEO and founder of Madison + Vine.

Madison + Vine’s unique, filmmaker-forward approach allows for the creation of narratives without sacrificing efficiency. The entire creative process – from ideation to production and post – is housed under one ever-expanding roof. The company is home for the most talented, emerging filmmakers from around the world, and the roster of directors continues to grow.

Lady Gaga to help promote kindness in schools across America through partnership with Staples for Students program

Lady Gaga to help promote kindness in schools across America through partnership with Staples for Students program

Staples Announces $2 Million Donation to DonorsChoose.org and Born This Way Foundation

FRAMINGHAM, Mass., 2017-Jun-24 — /EPR Retail News/ — Lady Gaga is teaming up with Staples, Inc. (NASDAQ: SPLS) to support education and create a positive classroom experience through its Staples for Students program.

The partnership builds on Staples’s long-standing commitment of supporting education and helping teachers and students.

Staples today (Jun. 22, 2017) announced it is donating $1 million to Born This Way Foundation, an organization founded by Lady Gaga and her mother, Cynthia Germanotta. Born This Way Foundation supports the wellness of young people and empowers them to create a kinder and braver world by fostering kindness, improving mental health resources and creating more positive environments. For the fourth year in a row, Staples is also donating $1 million to DonorsChoose.org, an organization that has funded more than 900,000 classroom projects for teachers since its founding, benefiting more than 22 million students.

Together through this unique partnership with Lady Gaga, her Born This Way Foundation and DonorsChoose.org, the Staples for Students program will help to promote kindness in schools across America and ensure that teachers and students have the resources they need for successful learning in classrooms.

“Teaming up with Lady Gaga, Born This Way Foundation and DonorsChoose.org is an amazing opportunity for the Staples for Students program to support teachers and help create a more positive classroom experience,” said Frank Bifulco, chief marketing officer, Staples. “There’s a correlation between kindness and overall well-being among students, and we hope that together with these perfect partners that we’ll be able to create an environment for students that will help them flourish in school and propel them into their bright futures.”

Lady Gaga said, “Classrooms that are positive and welcoming are classrooms where students can discover their passions and unlock their full potential. I’m excited to work with Staples, DonorsChoose.org and Born This Way Foundation to help teachers and students make their schools more supportive and engaging places. Kindness is one of the most important and most impactful values we can instill in students, and I look forward to working with Staples to foster a positive classroom environment where every student feels safe, heard and empowered.”

The 2017 Staples for Students program is propelled by several sobering statistics:

  • According to the Education Market Association, an estimated 99.5% of all public school teachers use their own money to equip their classrooms – frequently at a cost of more than $400 per year.
  • Sesame Workshop reports that 86% of teachers (and 70% of parents) admit to worrying often that the world is an unkind place for children.

Lady Gaga and Staples are also collaborating on a Public Service Announcement that debuts nationally at the end of June, further emphasizing the need to support teachers and students.

“Staples has been a generous and valued partner of ours for years, and we’re so thankful for its continued support of our mission, which has helped bring learning to life for thousands of teachers and students in classrooms nationwide,” said Charles Best, founder of DonorsChoose.org.

“By creating school climates that are grounded in compassion and generosity we can help to support the emotional well-being of our young people, ensuring they can learn effectively and grow into happy, thriving adults,” said Cynthia Germanotta, co-founder and president of Born This Way Foundation. “We thank Staples for its generous donation and for understanding that the boundless potential of young people can be unlocked by spreading kindness.”

Staples launches new student loan repayment plan to help associates with student debt

FRAMINGHAM, Mass,, 2016-Nov-03 — /EPR Retail News/ — Staples, Inc. (Nasdaq: SPLS) announced today (Nov. 1, 2016) the Phase I launch of a new student loan repayment plan that will help ease the burden of associates with student debt.

The program initially targets specific new hire sales associates and existing internal candidates who have been identified as high potential and top performers and will be offered to additional groups in the future. Active, full-time US associates with at least one outstanding loan obligation, who have obtained or are in the process of receiving a degree from an accredited institution, will have their loan principal paid at $100/per month for 36 months.

Student loan debt is an increasing issue among the millennial population, which represents a large portion of Staples’ employee-base. Within the industry over 70 percent of college grads leave school with student loan debt and of millennials 42 percent claim debt as their biggest concern. Over a trillion dollars of student loan debt is held by 40 million borrowers and new graduates owe a record-breaking average $37,000 in loans.

“Staples is pioneering this effort within the retail industry to help with the recruitment and retention of the key talent needed to support our previously announced strategy to focus on mid-market customers,” said Regis Mulot, executive vice president, global human resources. “We’re adding more than 1,000 people to our sales force and offering a student loan repayment benefit shows our commitment to supporting both new and existing associates.”

The Student Loan Repayment Plan is being administered by Tuition.io, the leading platform for employee student loan contributions.

“Student debt is one of the foremost concerns facing millennials nationwide. As such, Tuition.io is thrilled to be working with Staples to help them contribute payments directly to their employees’ student loan service providers,” said Noam Katz, CTO at Tuition.io. “By offering such a compelling initiative to current and prospective employees, Staples is simultaneously enhancing its recruitment efforts while strengthening employee retention.”

In addition to the new student loan repayment plan, the company has launched a series of innovative recruiting efforts. With the company’s new internal headhunting program, in-house recruiters proactively reach out to current associates and offer them other opportunities within the organization. Staples is also conceptually piloting a program later this year called “Refer a Talent” where associates are encouraged to refer high-potential outside candidates in order to facilitate bringing them on board even if there is not a specific open job requisition.

Staples also recently showed its commitment to ending the gender wage gap and advancing women in the workplace by becoming the biggest retailer to join a consortium of companies that share best practices and promote new ideas called the Employers for Pay Equity. Staples was also one of the first companies to sign the Equal Pay Pledge initiated by the White House and the Obama Administration and participated in events aimed at gender pay equity and leveling the playing field for women. Staples also removed all queries on criminal history from employment applications as part of the Fair Chance Business Pledge.

The Student Loan Repayment Plan joins other education-themed benefits that Staples offers to associates. These include the Tuition Reimbursement Program where eligible associates are offered reimbursement for a portion of their tuition fees based on number of years of service and the Dependent Scholarship Program which provides 30 awards of $3,000 to associates’ dependents who plan to continue their education at a college, university or a vocational-technical school.

Staples Easy System pilot program launches new cognitive-enabled “Easy Button” office supply reordering system

Staples Easy System pilot program launches new cognitive-enabled “Easy Button” office supply reordering system
Staples Easy System pilot program launches new cognitive-enabled “Easy Button” office supply reordering system

FRAMINGHAM, Mass, 2016-Oct-26 — /EPR Retail News/ — Staples (NASDAQ: SPLS) announced today that it has reached the next phase of its Staples Easy System pilot program, unveiling the new cognitive-enabled “Easy Button” office supply reordering system which integrates IBM’s Watson technology to simplify office supply management for Staples Business Advantage Customers.

The Staples Easy System brings the “on-demand” world to businesses, allowing customers to order anytime, anywhere, from any device they prefer. By tapping into IBM’s Watson Conversation service, Staples now offers a seamless ordering interface for customers across the Staples Easy System ecosystem – whether it’s via Staples’ proprietary next-generation Easy Button, through the app, text, email, over Facebook Messenger or with a Slackbot. The Watson-enabled interface simplifies the customers’ shopping experience, allowing them to quickly reorder supplies, track shipments or chat about customer service needs.

In addition to facilitating simpler interactions with customers, cognitive capabilities built into the system and powered by a combination of Watson Knowledge Studioand Staples’ own internal personalization APIs will help the Staples Easy System learn more about each businesses’ preferences over time, including their preferred products and quantities. Eventually, the system will even be able to make product and services recommendations based on the customer’s current needs.

“Staples and IBM have combined the power of Watson technology with Staples’ expertise in helping small and medium businesses to transform how companies shop for everything they need for their office,” said Faisal Masud, executive vice president, eCommerce and customer experience, Staples. “With the Easy System, administrators will have greater overall management of their organizations’ procurement processes, ultimately saving them time they can instead spend on running their office. It’s the assistant’s assistant.”

Since announcing the Staples Easy System solution earlier this year, Staples’Applied Innovation, e-Commerce and IT teams have been working on adding features and services to benefit business customers, including:

  • Speech-to-text capability, translating the inbound audio stream from the customer to Staples, which then allows for recognition of what they want to order or ask the Easy System.
  • The ability to view and playback all requests received from the customer’s Easy Button, allowing both the customer and Staples to listen to captured audio, review submissions from any of their devices and verify the requested items.
  • Strengthening the customer service chat feature with IBM’s Watson Conversation service, allowing the system to quickly respond to common requests, like checking on product availability.
  • Self-monitoring status updates through an API that sends a request to the Easy System from the Easy Button to check if button is online or not. If the Easy System detects that button is not online then it will send an email to the customer to alert them before the next time they try and make an order.

“A critical component of Watson’s technology is engagement, facilitating better interactions between brands and consumers, deepening connections and enhancing how people engage,” said Steve Abrams, distinguished engineer and vice president of developer advocacy, IBM Watson. “Our collaboration with Staples puts cognitive in the palm of the consumer’s hand, streamlining business operations and creating a frictionless customer experience.”

The Easy Button is being rolled out via Alpha Test to a small subset of Staples Business Advantage customers in the Austin, TX market. This will be followed by a broader Beta Test rollout to over 100 additional customers in Austin and New York before the year-end.

Staples is continuing to investigate other applications for the Easy System technology, including integrating additional Watson-related APIs in the future that could help with other tasks like booking a flight, ordering flowers or even making dinner reservations. Other future applications could come from the Easy Button’s “Internet of Things” capabilities, allowing it to connect to, and communicate with, other smart devices, like a printer that tells the button when it’s low on toner.

Businesses interested in learning more about the Easy System, including how to sign up to be a Beta customer, can visit www.staples.com/easy.

The Alpha and Beta tests of the Easy Button are part of a larger initiative from Staples to make easier shopping happen, which also includes the recently announced “Scan My List” functionality for Staples’ iOS mobile app, which lets a customer scan their shopping list or even take a picture of their breakroom to generate a Staples.com order.

Staples announces availability of Apple Pay on its mobile website

FRAMINGHAM, Mass., 2016-Oct-07 — /EPR Retail News/ — Staples, Inc. (Nasdaq: SPLS), one of the world’s largest internet retailers, today (Oct. 6, 2016) announced the availability of Apple Pay on its mobile website, m.staples.com, providing customers with an easy, secure and private way to pay that’s fast and convenient.

Staples business customers have already been using Apple Pay for purchases within the Staples iPhone app and in Staples’ stores. Now users visiting Staples’ mobile website with Safari will have the ability to check out using Apple Pay with just a finger on Touch ID, with no need to manually fill out lengthy account forms or repeatedly type in shipping and billing information.

“Staples’ customers demand seamless check-out when making purchases on the go, so they can get back to running their business,” said Faisal Masud, executive vice president, global e-commerce, Staples. “Apple Pay on Staples’ mobile web lets customers securely shop on their phone without having to open an app. We’ve been very pleased with the response to Apple Pay in our iPhone app and look forward to similar success with this new, seamless option on mobile web.”

In Staples’ stores, Apple Pay works with iPhone 6 and later and Apple Watch. When paying for goods and services on the go within the Staples’ App or on Staples’ mobile website, Apple Pay works with iPhone 6 and later, iPad Pro, iPad Air 2, and iPad mini 3 and later. Apple Pay in Safari also lets customers use Apple Pay on any Mac introduced in or after 2012 running macOS Sierra and confirm the payment with iPhone 6 or later or Apple Watch. Staples also offers Apple Pay within Makr, a proprietary iPhone and iPad app that enables people to design and print one-of-a-kind materials.

Staples expands TekDry® water damage recovery service to 600 stores nationwide

FRAMINGHAM, Mass., 2016-Oct-07 — /EPR Retail News/ — Staples, Inc. (NASDAQ: SPLS) today (Oct. 5, 2016) announced the expansion of its mobile phone repair services with the TekDry®water damage recovery service added to 600 stores nationwide by mid-November.

Staples offers customers the total solution for mobile phone repair to solve their top two issues: water damage and cracked screens. Staples will expand its water damage recovery service from 82 to 600 stores making it the largest national retail partner offering TekDry services and providing customers a risk-free option to repair water damaged mobile phones.

“We understand our customers need quick and effective solutions for mobile phone repair,” said Peter Scala, executive vice president, merchandising, Staples. “We’re thrilled to team up with TekDry to make Staples the largest retailer that offers a risk- and hassle-free option to repair water damaged mobile phones so our customers can get up and running quickly while preserving personal data. The expansion of TekDry to more Staples stores ensures that our customers will have quick and easy access to this tech saving solution.”

TekDry is a risk-free option that will fix a water damaged mobile phone in about 30 minutes for $69.99 or the service is free. While mobile phone users have tried many ways to repair a water damaged phone, including placing it in rice, they are often unsuccessful. Instead, shut off the phone, refrain from plugging it in, and take the phone to a Staples store offering TekDry services. The in-store TekDry water removal machine will remove 100 percent of the water.

Learn more about this amazing technology when TekDry founders appear on Shark Tank® Friday, October 7 at 9:00pm EDT on the ABC Television Network.

“We’re excited about this opportunity to grow TekDry within Staples stores and help customers solve one of their most common phone problems,” said Craig Beinecke, co-founder and vice president of sales, TekDry and Shark Tank entrepreneur. “We founded TekDry to make device repair easier, more effective and all around faster for people.”

Other benefits of TekDry include: data preservation, stays within common manufacturer specifications, doesn’t require device disassembly, and is more affordable than replacement costs. In addition to mobile phones, the TekDry machine can repair other devices from water damage.

“Teaming up with TekDry founders and Shark Tank entrepreneurs is a win-win for Staples,” said Scala. “Not only do we provide our customers a solution that will save their device, but we’re also helping entrepreneurs grow their business.”

ICIC and Staples presented Caduceus a healthcare staffing and consulting firm with Business Growth Award

ATLANTA, 2016-Sep-27 — /EPR Retail News/ — The Initiative for a Competitive Inner City (ICIC) and FORTUNE announced September 14 that Atlanta based Caduceus, a healthcare staffing and consulting firm, topped the 2016 Inner City 100 list of the fastest-growing inner city businesses in the U.S. Caduceus was recognized by longtime ICIC partner Staples, Inc. for both its top place on the list, and for its growth rate of 3554 percent. Staples presented the company with the annual Staples Business Growth Award for this impressive rate.

Caduceus’s Chief Executive Officer, Carlos Lopez, a former Marine, decided to found the business in 2008 with the goal of staffing the military healthcare industry. A certified Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business (SDVOSB), Caduceus has succeeded in doing just that, while also expanding its services beyond healthcare to include scientific and technology related staffing as well. Carlos and his company are known for their commitment to both their employees and their customers, and undoubtedly this commitment has helped drive their growth.

Each year, ICIC works with a national network of nominating partners to identify, rank and spotlight rapidly-growing urban businesses. The top 100 are determined by revenue growth and are honored on the Inner City 100 list published in FORTUNE. This year’s full list of winners can be viewed at Fortune.com.

Before the September 14 Awards revelation, winners gathered for a full-day business symposium featuring management case studies from Harvard Business School professors and interactive sessions with top CEOs. Shira Goodman, Interim CEO at Staples, gave a keynote speech to open the event and touched on the challenges all businesses are facing due to the pace of change in today’s marketplace. “Good times and bad times come and go but as the leader of your business you get to teach and role model the kind of constancy, consistency, integrity, dependability and intensity that will allow your company to thrive in all seasons,” she said in congratulating the winners on making the Inner City 100 list.

Other notable speakers included Rapid 7 CEO Corey Thomas, Harvard Business School Professors Lynda Applegate and Amy Edmondson, Forbes Senior Editor Loren Feldman, John Stuart of PTC, Bithenergy CEO Robert Wallace, Brook Colangelo of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, and ICIC Founder and Chairman Michael E. Porter.

“We are extraordinarily proud of these pioneering entrepreneurs who lead the way in economic revitalization in America’s inner cities,” says Steve Grossman, CEO of ICIC, of the list of 100.

The Inner City 100 program recognizes and supports successful inner city business leaders, and celebrates their role in providing innovation and job creation in America’s cities. These companies strengthen local American economies, provide job opportunities for underrepresented communities, and drive forward economic and social development.

Boasting an average five-year growth rate of 458 percent between 2011 and 2015, the 2016 Inner City 100 winners represent a wide span of geography, hailing from 42 cities and 25 states. Collectively, the winners employed 7,324 people in 2015, and on average over a third of their employees live in the same neighborhood as the company.

Highlights of the 2016 Inner City 100 include:

  • Employ 7,324 workers total in 2015.
  • Created 4,696 new jobs in the last five years.
  • On average, 34% of employees live in same neighborhood as the company.
  • Average company age is 16 years.
  • Average 2015 revenue was $12.2 million.
  • 34% are women-owned.
  • 37% are minority-owned.
  • 6% of the winners are certified B-Corps.
  • 26 industries represented in the top 100.

Inner City 100 Methodology: The Initiative for a Competitive Inner City (ICIC) defines inner cities as core urban areas with higher unemployment and poverty rates and lower median incomes than their surrounding metropolitan statistical areas. Every year, ICIC identifies, ranks, and spotlights the 100 fastest-growing businesses located in America’s inner cities. In 2016, Companies were ranked by revenue growth over the five-year period between 2011 and 2015. This list was audited by the independent accounting firm Rucci, Bardaro, and Falzone, PC.

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. & BOSTON, 2016-Sep-16 — /EPR Retail News/ — Staples, Inc. (NASDAQ: SPLS) and Workbar announced today (Sep. 14, 2016) that three initial Workbar at Staples locations are now open in the Greater Boston community.

Staples and Workbar together are creating more productive workplaces for small business customers, independent professionals, startups and the growing mobile workforce with the Workbar at Staples facilities located within redesigned Staplesstores. The innovative collaboration is driving the workplace of the future where a coworking membership is as common as a gym membership.

Work schedules and environments are changing due to the fact that 30% of Americans are self-employed (Pew Research Center). People need new ways to do their work, yet still have a community interaction with a network of like minded people. Coworking is a next-gen business service now available at three Staples locations.

“We’re always looking for ways to support and enhance productivity for our customers, and teaming up with Workbar allows us to provide a collaborative, convenient environment where business people can make their workdays more productive and enjoyable,” said Peter Scala, executive vice president – merchandising, Staples. “The new Workbar at Staples locations are amazing new venues within our stores that provide our business customers with the creative space, office essentials and support to run their business or launch a new idea.”

Each of the 2,500 – 3,500 square-foot custom-designed facilities feature a mix of high-end workspaces, conference rooms, private phone rooms, fast and secure Wi-Fi, printers, natural light, and bottomless coffee and tea to keep the connectivity and productivity flowing for business customers. The vibe is free.

“The new Workbar at Staples locations align so well with our mission to create a network of high quality workspaces with all the amenities of an ideal office coupled with a diverse, vibrant community that enhances our Members’ business and personal lives,” said Bill Jacobson, CEO and co-founder, Workbar.

National Coffee Day: Staples survey reveals office workers take their reliance on coffee to the extreme

FRAMINGHAM, Mass, 2016-Sep-16 — /EPR Retail News/ — Some office workers take their reliance on coffee to the extreme. In fact, nearly one-third of employees said they would rather streak naked through the main street of their town than give up coffee for a year, according to a Staples survey released in advance of National Coffee Day, celebrated on September 29.

Not only would some shed their clothes for coffee, more than half of those polled also confessed they would give up sweets over coffee forever. Coffee even rivals our reliance on technology, as a quarter of employees said they would go without their smartphone for eternity if that meant they could keep coffee. Not even annual vacation time is safe – as 24 percent would relinquish their yearly time off in favor of access to coffee.

The survey revealed that, on average, employees consume two cups of coffee each day. It makes sense, then, that according to the Staples Business Advantage Workplace Index, three quarters of those polled wished that employers provided free coffee and snacks.

“Drinking coffee is engrained in the daily routine of the U.S. workforce – 59 percent drink at least two cups daily – and many consider it essential for them to do their work at a high level,” said Kerry Anne Carter, vice president, Staples Business Advantage, which offers customers a robust coffee lease program that includes brewers at no extra charge, brewer maintenance and access to a team of field experts. “Taking the initiative to provide free coffee options and a welcoming breakroom can go a long way toward keeping employees happy and productive.”

According to the coffee survey, 35 percent of employees need at least one cup to feel productive or alert during the day; otherwise, it’s not pretty. When employees were asked which tasks they can’t handle before their first cup of the day, top answers included thinking, talking to anyone and commuting to work.

Win Staples Business Advantage Coffee for a Year

Staples committed to doing its part to end the gender wage gap

FRAMINGHAM, Mass., 2016-Aug-28 — /EPR Retail News/ — In honor of Women’s Equality Day, commemorating the 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote, Staples(NASDAQ: SPLS) is showing its committed to doing its part to end the gender wage gap and advancing women in the workplace by becoming the biggest retailer to join a consortium of companies that will share best practices and promote new ideas called the Employers for Pay Equity.

Earlier this year, Staples became one of the first companies to sign the Equal Pay Pledge initiated by the White House and the Obama Administration and participated in three events aimed at gender pay equity and leveling the playing field for women: a pay equity roundtable, a White House briefing on diversity in the corporate sector, and The United State of Women Summit. Out of these events, the Employers for Pay Equity consortium was born. The group is comprised of companies that understand the importance of diversity and inclusion, including ensuring that all individuals are compensated equitably for equal work and experience and have an equal opportunity to contribute and advance in the workplace.

For a list of companies already participating and for corporations who would like to learn how to join the consortium please visit www.employersforpayequity.com.

Beginning in September, Staples recruiters will eliminate salary inquiries during the interview process. This specific tactic aimed at ending the wage gap will become mandatory in Massachusetts in 2018, after Governor Charlie Baker recently signed into law “An Act to Establish Pay Equity”, to ensure equal pay for comparable work for all Massachusetts workers and equal opportunities to earn competitive salaries in the workplace.

“Staples promotes equality among its associates because we understand the value of an inclusive and diverse workforce, and we’re joining with other companies to not only spread this message, but raise awareness of the gender pay gap that still exists,” said Regis Mulot, executive vice president, human resources, Staples, Inc. “By changing the way we recruit talent to mitigate gender bias two years before it will be necessary by law, we’re showing that we realize change is needed now, and we’re committed to helping make it happen.”

Previously, Staples announced that it signed onto the 100% Talent – The Boston Women’s Compact, an innovative effort to end the gender-based wage gap and advance women in the workforce. The Compact is an initiative of the Boston Women’s Workforce Council, an advisory board to Mayor Marty Walsh and is supported by the School of Management at Simmons College. Signatories agree to take steps to eliminate the gender wage gap and remove the visible and invisible barriers to women’s advancement. Signatories agree to report associate demographic and salary data to the Council anonymously every two years so that progress on closing the gap can be checked.

The company has also signed on to The Corporate Challenge, a groundbreaking effort by Bentley University’s Center for Women and Business to challenge companies to develop and retain their female talent and position women on their boards. Participating companies commit to define their gender-inclusiveness goals, develop strategies to meet those goals and track their progress.

Staples has long been a leader in equality in the workforce, with programs like its “Women Who Lead” Associate Resource Group, whose mission is to build a thriving community of female associates. The group routinely engages its members with developmental, networking and community focused events.

Back-to-school shopping has never been easier with Staples mobile iOS app

FRAMINGHAM, Mass., 2016-Aug-27 — /EPR Retail News/ — Staples (NASDAQ: SPLS) today (Aug. 25, 2016) announced a new beta test available on the Staples mobile iOS app. Customers can now send a photo of their child’s back-to-school list via the Staples Easy System on the app and a Staples associate will populate the customer’s shopping cart with everything they need. Back-to-school shopping has never been easier!

Today, many school districts offer a printed list of supplies. Staples is now offering an innovative way for parents to shop with those lists, making it easier than ever to get back-to-school shopping done. Parents will snap a photo of their back-to-school list, send it to a Staples associate via the Staples Easy System (on the app) and then be provided with the best product options within 24-48 hours. Once the list has been populated, customers can choose to buy now or customize their items in the cart, and if they want to pick up their order in store where available or have it shipped to them.

“We listened to customer feedback about their limited time for back-to-school shopping and delivered an experience utilizing the power of mobile,” said Faisal Masud, executive vice president, eCommerce and customer experience, Staples. “We know parents are busy and the process of back-to-school shopping, especially if there are multiple children involved, can be time-consuming. This new experience enables us to do the hard work on behalf of our customers and we’re already seeing 10 percent of our iOS users interact with the chat feature on a daily basis.”

The Staples Easy System uses computer vision, artificial intelligence, crowd sourced data, and mobile interfaces to enable this chat-based experience, which also makes it easy for customers to ask Staples for any changes or other service questions. The beta test is now in effect for select customers, and has applications beyond just back-to-school shopping, as businesses can use the feature to snap a photo of their office or breakroom to get product re-ordering suggestions.

This beta test program is one of many new mobile app features that Staples is initiating to make easier shopping happen. It’s the latest addition to a suite of shopping options including stores, Staples.com, Staples mobile website, Buy Online, Pick Up in Store and Staples in-store kiosks.

Staples donates $131,447 for school literacy projects listed on DonorsChoose.org in Los Angeles

Staples donates $131,447 for school literacy projects listed on DonorsChoose.org in Los Angeles
Staples donates $131,447 for school literacy projects listed on DonorsChoose.org in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES, 2016-Aug-09 — /EPR Retail News/ — Staples, Inc. (NASDAQ: SPLS) announced that all music and arts projects, all college and career prep projects and all middle school and high school literacy projects posted on DonorsChoose.org in Los Angeles received full funding as part of Staples’ $1 million donation to DonorsChoose.org, a charity that has funded more than 700,000 classroom projects for teachers and has positively affected more than 18 million U.S. students.

As part of the Staples for Students program, Staples and Katy Perry continue to help teachers across the country this back-to-school season. Staples funded the balance of every music and arts project, college and career prep project and middle school and high school literacy projects listed on DonorsChoose.org in Los Angeles. With a donation of $131,447, Staples helped 121 teachers make more happen in local classrooms, impacting more than 15,500 students across 97 schools in the community.

For example, Mrs. Letford at New Academy Elementary School will receive new xylophones, ribbon bands and a new flute so her students can continue to express themselves through music and dance.

Katy Perry said, “When I teamed up with Staples in 2014, I learned firsthand how desperately teachers need our support, with many of them having to dig into their own pockets to provide simple tools that we would expect to already be available in our classrooms. So when Staples approached me again this year, I jumped at the opportunity because I saw the lasting effect our collaboration had on DonorsChoose.org and thousands of teachers and students. I believe in education as the foundation for a great life, so I want to make sure that students across the country are inspired by their teachers and are afforded opportunity to realize their dreams.”

Driven by insight from the Education Market Association that an estimated 99.5 percent of all public school teachers’ use their own money to equip their classrooms, Staples takes great pride in helping to alleviate some of the pressure placed upon teachers.

“We’re overjoyed to partner with Katy Perry again to highlight the impact teachers have on our children’s lives and the need to support classrooms,” said Frank P. Bifulco, Jr., executive vice president global marketing, Staples. “Knowing that teachers spend an average of more than $400 per year from their own pockets to better prepare their classrooms, Staples is committed to supporting DonorsChoose.org in order to help teachers and contribute to a fulfilling learning experience.”

Katy Perry and Staples have also collaborated to create a public service announcement that is currently airing nationwide, further increasing visibility around the need to celebrate and support teachers.

“We’re so thankful for the continued support from Staples and its loyal customers, as well as Katy Perry, which has helped bring classroom dreams to life for countless teachers and students nationwide,” said Charles Best, founder of DonorsChoose.org. “Staples’ million dollar donation to DonorsChoose.org will go a long way to helping educators across the country, like those supported today in Los Angeles.”

Donate in Stores or Snap to Help Local Teachers
Katy Perry has been helping Staples raise awareness of how easy it is to support teachers by making a $1 donation either in stores or online at www.StaplesForStudents.com, with proceeds funding DonorsChoose.org projects. Beginning in early August, every customer who donates in-store will receive a free, exclusive Katy Perry pencil, while supplies last.

Los Angeles residents can secure more donations for their local classrooms by using the Staples for Students Snapchat Geofilter. Beginning August 4th and running through August 6th, every use of the Staples for Students Snapchat Geofilter will trigger a $1 donation (up to $5,000) from Staples to be used towards Los Angeles classroom projects on DonorsChoose.org. The Geofilter will be available for use in the Staples store in the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw shopping plaza (located at 3701 W. Santa Rosalia Driver) and in the surrounding area.

Sponsored Geofilters allow brands to take part in Snaps sent between friends on Snapchat – a platform used by over 100 million people each day. When Snapchatters take a Snap in a certain area, they’ll be able to see a Geofilter and use it to explain where, when and why they took the Snap.

Win a $50,000 Scholarship and Chance to Meet Katy Perry
Now through September 10, 2016, fans who spend $25 or more in any Staples store will receive a unique entry code on their receipt to enter the sweepstakes online at www.StaplesForStudents.com.
