Roger Burnley comments on Sainsbury’s inclusion in The Times as Top 50 employer for women

LONDON, 2014-4-4 — /EPR Retail News/ — I’m delighted that we’ve been recognised by The Times as a Top 50 employer for women.

As a major employer we work hard to ensure that that everyone in our business – regardless, rank, role, location – gets the opportunities they deserve.

We never rest on our laurels – there is always more to do to make sure that Sainsbury’s is a place where our colleagues love to work, and we must constantly listen, adapt and grow to meet our colleagues’ needs.

That challenge is met partly by our supportive mentoring system, where colleagues are encouraged to discuss their strengths and share their experiences.

Often, sharing with peer groups or mentors can help us see where our strengths lie.  So it’s important that we continue to give colleagues these platforms, actively encouraging everyone to get involved.

Now, we need to go further. We know that we can do more to help women to reach senior management roles – particularly in our stores and depots. Through mentoring, development and training, we aim to do that.

I’m incredibly proud of where we’ve got to, and I’m already looking forward to going further to make sure that Sainsbury’s is always a great place to work.

Sainsbury’s included in The Times Top 50 Employers for Women 2014

LONDON, 2014-4-4 — /EPR Retail News/ — The accolade recognises Sainsbury’s proactive approach to career development – this includes actively engaging with future business leaders through Inspiring the Future – a group that links volunteer mentors with schools and colleges to promote careers.

Nearly 300 volunteers from Sainsbury’s have now signed up to the scheme to give talks in schools and colleges to give insight into careers and roles.

This is in addition to the 500 women who are now on one of Sainsbury’s own mentoring programmes and leadership pathways.

Roger Burnley, Managing Director for General Merchandise, Clothing and Logistics and Board sponsor for Gender Diversity at Sainsbury’s, said: “As one of the UK’s biggest employers, we’re proud to be recognised for our progressive approach to inspiring and developing people.

“Being an inclusive employer is part of Sainsbury’s heritage – from the first female store managers in the 1940s, to today where a third of our operational board and departmental directors are women. We work incredibly hard to promote the many career opportunities in a business of our size, scale and reach. So today’s announcement shores up our position as a destination for people who want to grow and develop with us, and a business where there is no glass ceiling.”

Angie Risley, Group HR Director at Sainsbury’s, said: “The Times Top 50 Award recognises the breadth of our approach to making Sainsbury’s a diverse and inclusive place to work. Our diversity strategy is integral to our goal of being the most inclusive retailer where people love to work and shop. We have robust policies in place, but we are constantly aspiring to do more. With sponsorship from board level we have targeted priority areas that will help us achieve this.”

The list is produced in partnership with Opportunity Now, a campaign group for gender diversity. Kathryn Nawrockyi, Director of Opportunity Now,said:  “Congratulations to Sainsbury’s on being included in The Times Top 50 Employers for Women 2014. The standard of entries was incredibly high once again, and they should be hugely proud of their success. They are a great example of strong leadership; of how putting gender equality at the core of a business can create real, sustainable change for women, organisations and society as a whole. I hope other employers will be inspired by their work and use it to accelerate progress for women in their workforce.”

Tesco to increase the price it pays British dairy farmers for their milk

Cheshunt, England, 2014-4-4 — /EPR Retail News/ — Tesco announced today the new price it will pay British dairy farmers for their milk.

Tesco Sustainable Dairy Group (TSDG) members will receive the new price of at least34.2ppl. This represents an increase of at least 0.4ppl for all TSDG farmers.

Tesco guarantees TSDG farmers always receive a price that is above the cost of production, making sure their business turns a profit so they can plan and invest for the future. We collaborate with our farmers on the way the price calculation works, and all price changes are negotiated with farmers representing TSDG members.

Customers can be assured that every litre of own-brand milk they buy has come from a Tesco TSDG farmer.

John Scouler, Tesco Commercial Director said:

“This price is good news for the farmers who make up the Tesco Sustainable Dairy Group. It reflects our commitment to pay farmers a fair price for their milk. The TSDG has now been running for seven years and we are proud to continue to lead the way in offering dairy farmers a fair price and supporting British agriculture.”

Will Hosford, TSDG dairy farmer and Committee Chairman said:

“We are now seven years into our relationship with Tesco and this announcement re-affirms the long term commitment Tesco has to its dairy farmers. We are operating in a volatile market but being a TSDG member gives us the confidence and stability we need to carry on investing for the future.”

Since 2007 Tesco has invested over £185 million into the Tesco Sustainable Dairy Group in paying a fair price to British dairy farmers, improving animal welfare and environmental standards, and a next generation scholarship programme.

Notes to editors

  • Every litre of Tesco own label fresh milk, with the exception of Organic milk, is covered by the new price.
  • TSDG members who receive the Promar supplement will receive the new price of 34.2ppl for farmers whose milk is processed by Arla and 34.3ppl for farmers whose milk is processed by Muller Wiseman. This reflects recent increases in the prices our processors pay their farmers.
  • The commitment of TSDG is further reinforced by Tesco’s work with Liverpool University through its ‘Dairy Centre of Excellence’. This exclusive agreement brings together the dairy sector to look at issues from animal welfare to consumer trends. In January 2008 we also launched a visitor centre which is a national resource point for schools, farmers and dairy industry experts and over 1000 children have now visited.

Promoting up-and-coming talent to offer consumers the latest fashions: Carrefour continues with a successful strategy

São Paulo, 2014-4-4 — /EPR Retail News/ — Autumn and winter in Brazil promise to be more colourful than ever – thanks to Carrefour. The retailer has strengthened its partnerships with fashion bloggers and invited guest designers Carla Lemos (Modices), Cris Guerra (Hoje vou Assim) and Lia Camargo (Just Lia) to put their signatures to the autumn/winter collection of its Tex range of clothing and accessories. Reflecting the diversity of consumer profiles found in its stores, the three bloggers put their name to different but equally feminine looks inspired by three global fashion trends: Grunge, Folk and Basic. Carla, Cris and Lia have already appeared in magazines wearing their own creations in everyday situations, showing off the beauty and fit of the garments. Prices range from 15.90 to 119.90 reais.

The collection reflects Carrefour’s commitment to offering its consumers quality products at accessible prices.

The campaign: The campaign organized by our marketing department for the launch of the new collection includes a live fashion parade on the TV show Mulheres, presented by Cátia Fonseca, a supplement in a weekly women’s magazine, promotion in blogs by specialists such as Glória Kalil and Gustavo Sarti, and Instagram spots by celebrities including Mariana Rios, Sabrina Sato, Ana Maria Braga and Luisa Mell. On a regional level, Carrefour has established partnerships with leading blogs such as Onça de Tule, Coisas de Diva and The Fashion Blog.

The collection: Carrefour’s autumn/winter Tex collection has something for all the family. The women’s range draws inspiration from the Folk look of colder climates (floral prints on dark grounds) and Grunge (checker and animal patterns), and also features a Basic line that’s good for all styles and occasions.

The men’s range is modern and comfortable, with an emphasis on t-shirts with urban landscapes and basic garments that combine with jeans and varsity jackets.

For kids, there are bodysuits and jumpsuits with printed Disney characters, and matching kits of gloves and slippers. The big surprise in the collection is the range of bed, table and bath linen, with floral prints and geometric patterns.

Meijer opened its Garden Centers

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., 2014-4-4 — /EPR Retail News/ — Winter may still be in full force in some parts of the Midwest, but Meijer is thinking spring with the opening of its Garden Centers this past weekend. Despite the snow, there is still plenty that restless green thumbs can do to get their garden prepped for planting. Bill Stechebar, divisional merchandising manager over outdoor and indoor garden and floral at Meijer shares the following tips:

1. Start seeds indoors.

Can’t wait to feel the soil between your fingers? Get your fix by starting your seeds indoors. The seeds will need lots of light. Florescent lights are recommended but strong lights from other lamps will work too.

2. Build a raised-bed garden.

Raised-bed gardens have grown in popularity and with good reason.  Using a raised bed can help prevent weeds if constructed and maintained properly. For gardeners struggling with poor soil quality, it can help boost the nutrients. Novice to carpentry? No worries. You can find affordable and easy-to-assemble cedar raised-bed garden kits at your local Meijer for just $39.99.

3. Nip crabgrass in the bud.

Crabgrass has been a nemesis to many gardeners for years. One solution is to prevent it before it becomes a problem. “If you don’t want crabgrass, one solution is a crabgrass preventer and fertilizer that can be sprinkled before the thaw,” said Stechebar. But don’t wait too long. “If it’s not applied before crabgrass starts growing, you have a battle on your hands. “

4. Trim ornamental grasses.

For those who have a hankering to be outside, trimming ornamental grasses is a great pre-thaw task. According to Stechebar, trimming and pruning makes way for new growth when the warm weather arrives.

5. Spread new mulch.

After the ground begins to show but before the weather is warm enough for planting, get outside and spread new mulch before your perennials start to remerge.
